Billy Bell and Jose Ruiz – African Jazz – The Homoerotic Dance
Billy Bell and Jose Ruiz dance African Jazz on So You Think You Can Dance
Music: The Hunt
The “hunter-prey” concept was more “top-bottom” on the dance floor really. What was the choreographer thinking?
Interesting that the show ended with the worst dance of the night. It was very awkward. I thought that Billy and Jose should get a room somewhere after this dance.

This dance isn't erotic at all. I like the dance, it's interesting. It looks like a hunter and prey dance to me. And it's clear that is all that it is. Wow.
I'm with rickey %1000 percent on this one...hands down the most homo choreography I have seen on sytycd. Now there could be some bias because there haven't been many male-male, female-female dances because normally they are only done during the finale however this beats anyone of them hands down and it wasn't just the dancers energy it was the choreography itself...it leads me to believe that it was originally choreographed for a man and woman to dance given the number of lifts and the types of lifts. And it was pretty clear who was pitching and who was catching as well. Rickey probably wasn't "horny" b4 he watched it but if he's anything like me he was after lol :p
It wouldn't have seemed so "homoerotic" if either dancer had brought manliness into it. Billy tried to dance it with a contemporary flair and Jose just couldn't interpret the dance at all. If he could dance, say like Adechike, or even with some of Alex's power, it could have been cool. It was hard to watch because Billy looked wimpy and Jose looked whipped :)
I watched the movie with a mindset it's a homoerotic dance. But not in any way I found it homoerotic. And I did try so hard to make it homoerotic, but I can't. So I don't understand Rickey's comments...
I found the "top-bottom" portion of the choreography awkward. LOL!
Billy Bell is a great dancer. But perhaps if he tried to loose some of his extensions and lines (particularly his leg extensions) in his interpretation of the Cheesman choreography, maybe it would have been a more powerful performance.
That dance was awful. I liked the concept of it, but man, the dancers just didn't bring ANY strength or power or aggression at all.
It reminded me of that MadTV character. The redneck that acted all tough and wanted to fight everyone, and then when he starts, he hits all weak and pathetic.
That's how this routine was for me. Weak and pathetic.
That's probably why Jose looked uncomfortable dancing it! He was a hot mess in this dance. Billy gave it his all but Jose looked like a jelly bean just bouncing around. The judges were critical, but where was the "empty donut" comments from Mia, because this was really horrible dancing.
yes I agree. The choreography looked like it was originally designed for male and female dancers based on the lifts and, I might add, "the top-bottom" part of the choreography. LOL!
I agree it's deffinately hunter and prey. I can't seem to help picturing a zebra running around almost picking on this hunter though, 'cause he just can't seem to catch the animal.
