For a brief period of time in the early 2000s, it seemed like you couldn’t hear about Ashanti without also hearing about Ja Rule, and vice-versa. The duo famously collaborated on the hits singles “Mesmerize” and “Always On Time,” though it’s been a good long while since the rapper and the Long Island singer have worked together. However, that could soon be changing, with Ja Rule’s recent release from prison.
While speaking with Ebro and K Foxx of HOT 97, Ashanti recounted the details of a phone conversation she had with Ja Rule. The singer stated Ja Rule is “super excited” about making new music now that he’s once again a free man. In addition, the possibility for a collaboration with Ashanti was placed on the table for sometime in the future.
“He is in great spirits…,” Ashanti said of her friend. “He has a studio downstairs in the house. That’s where he’s gonna be all the time. He’s super excited about the music…Hopefully, we get it all popping. It’s no denying our chemistry…I mean, he has to focus on his stuff right now. And I gotta focus on mine.”
Ashanti also offered up some scoops on her upcoming album, BraveHeart.
“I collaborated with a lot of people,” said the singer. “I did some stuff with Cool & Dre. I did some stuff with Detail, he’s super dope, just recently. Meek, French [Montana]…Me and Ja’s gonna Skype. That’s what I’ll do and I’ll play him some records.”
Ashanti also revealed that the album will be released through her own label, Written Entertainment.
Braveheart is due out on July 30th. The first single, “The Woman You Love” (featuring Busta Rhymes), is out now.
