Amy Yakima and Travis Wall – Contemporary – So You Think You Can Dance 10 – Video
Travis Wall choreographed a contemporary routine set to “Wicked Game” by James Vincent McMorrow, but first, Amy Yakima shares her inspiration, her Rockette cousin Elizabeth. It’s not the same as the tragedy in some of the other backstories tonight, but there’s a cute sibling-type fondness between the two that’s rather charming! This dance is really tightly performed and choreographed. There are things in animated cartoons called “keyframes”, which are the poses you want your animated characters to hit, the parts between being transitions. Well, Travis draws some very beautiful keyframes in his choreography tonight, and he (along with Amy) hits every single one of them flawlessly, sometimes almost miraculously. Since this is the last week with the judges, they praise Amy’s entire presence on the show, and especially this routine. I’m not generally big on contemporary, but I have to agree that this dance is excellent. There’s danger in a lot of the moves, the potential for disaster that only a true, deep trust between partners can overcome. Watch the video below; it’s really something special.
