RECAP

-We kick things off right where we left off last night, with GABBY ZONNEVELD losing her place in the song and having a panic attack. She never does recover, so Harry walks up onstage and comforts her, taking her offstage and telling her, “Take a deep breath and relax for a little while.” Backstage, Gabby explains that she froze up there upon noticing the judges and realizing everything was happening at once. Harry and the judges decide they’ll come back to her later.

GABBY ZONNEVELD, KELLY KIME, and KATHERINE WINSTON

-So we return to the line after Gabby’s blunder, and we start with KELLY KIME, who sings “Don’t” by Ed Sheeran. I think she has wonderful vocal control, although I wouldn’t have picked this song for her. Still, I mostly enjoyed what she did with it.

KATHERINE WINSTON sings “Wild Horses” by the Rolling Stones, and I think she ends up being the best of the three we actually see from this line.

-After a pep talk from her mother, GABBY ZONNEVELD regains herself and comes back onstage. She sings “Bottom of the River” by Delta Rae, and it’s really good, in my opinion. But I don’t know if it’s enough to recover from the flub. That said, I still think they’ll give her a shot.

The judges reveal the results.

-We keep things moving…

ANDREW ANNELLO, MADDIE WALKER and ALEXIS GOMEZ

-We kick things off with ANDREW ANNELLO, who sings the Amy Winehouse version of “Valerie,” and I’m really impressed with his tone.

MADDIE WALKER sings “Already Gone” by Sugarland, and while it’s pretty, I found it far less impressive than her city audition.

ALEXIS GOMEZ sings “Before He Cheats,” but not before Ryan Seacrest points out, backstage, that Alexis is once again barefoot. His need to point out any time someone isn’t wearing shoes leads me to believe homeboy’s got himself a fetish. Much like with Maddie, I wasn’t feeling the vocal too much, but I do like Alexis and think she might have a special “it” factor about her.

The judges reveal the results, and the only person called forward is Andrew…because he’s the only person eliminated.

ANDREW ANNELLO is eliminated from American Idol XIV!

CODY FRY and LOREN LOTT

-Back from break with CODY FRY, who sings “Lilac Wine” by Jeff Buckley. I think he’s one of the more captivating vocalists of the competition, as I feel I underrated him on his audition. He does a great job of hooking interest with just his voice and the subtlety of his guitar playing. He’s a no-brainer…

CODY FRY is through to group round!

LOREN LOTT doesn’t want to be another face in the crowd, she wants to be THE face in the crowd. She feels she’s the next American Idol because she can make the franchise a lot of money, an answer J-Lo loves. But when Loren sings “Radioactive” by Imagine Dragons, it falls flat. However, she’s confident in her performance because she feels the judges want more than just someone who can sing. Ultimately, she advances…

-Her reaction is fantastic, as she shouts her head off and then claims she feels like kittens and gummy bears and coffee and chocolate.

RAYVON OWEN and SHI SCOTT

RAYVON OWEN kicks things off for his line with “Ordinary People” by John Legend, and it’s absolutely GORGEOUS. His runs are impeccable, and his tone is downright lovely.

SHI SCOTT sings a solid version of “Mercy” by Duffy, and although I didn’t love it, I thought she deserved to go through.

CLARK BECKHAM and DANIEL SEAVEY

CLARK BECKHAM sings “Let’s Get It On,” and this is one that really grew as he went on. His falsetto is insane, and he’s got really good control of his voice.

DANIEL SEAVEY sings “Thinking Out Loud” by Ed Sheeran, and I still think the kid needs more time. He does have a voice though, even if he doesn’t nail all of the runs (really, hitting ALL of Ed Sheeran’s runs is a tall enough order as it is). Before his performance, he dedicates it to J-Lo, which results in a humorous moment when he gets to the lyric “I’ll be loving you til we’re 70,” as Harry shouts out, “What, in 3 years?” J-Lo quietly curses him out, and yeah, I love their little back-and-forths. Kind of a shame no one’s watching these days, when they’ve finally gotten the post-Simon panel right, chemistry-wise.

-And we’re back with…

DAKOTA SUAREZ

DAKOTA SUAREZ sings a version of “Natural Woman,” and it starts off well enough, but completely falls apart in the falsetto.

-We follow it up with a montage of people bombing, and while I recognize some of these people, I have to be honest with you, I don’t remember a single one of their names. Dakota, at the very least, isn’t as in denial as the other eliminated contestants, recognizing that she pretty much blew it with that screeching high note.

DAKOTA SUAREZ is eliminated from AMERICAN IDOL XIV!

-And we continue with…

QAASIM MIDDLETON

QAASIM MIDDLETON flirts with Jax, who seems really enamored with him and his hair, which he’s apparently been growing out since he was two years old. She gets flustered and says, in a confessional, that she feels good vibes from him. “I hope he likes me!” she says, and it becomes apparent she’s crushing pretty hard. Jax swoons from the audience as Qaasim sings “Give Me Love” by Ed Sheeran, and while I think he oversings it a lot, he has a really good tone. And he also kills it with the last note, as his falsetto is really beautiful and pure.

The judges make their decision…

NICK FRADIANI, QUENTIN ALEXANDER, ZACK KALTENBACH and QAASIM MIDDLETON are through to group round!

-And that’s it for Day 2, as we now move forward to group round, as the contestants must split themselves into groups of four, and already, we’re having drama as we go to break, as some contestants fail to find groups. Alexis Granville is unable to find any group and is in tears, until Sal Valentinetti comes to her rescue and brings her into his group. I LOVE Sal Valentinetti, man. LOVE him.

-We see a bunch of contestants freaking out due to lack of sleep and overall nervousness. Nick Fradiani rides on another dude’s back, Joey Cook tries to get into a rhythm with her group, Sal is pacing the floor in a tracksuit, singing a lullaby to the camera, and even I’m feeling sleepy now. The next morning, Joey gets onto the bus to return to the Orpheum and reveals she’s running on adrenaline.

-Let’s get Group Day going!

DOUBLE STUFF

-Our first group is called “Double Stuff” and it features DAVID OLIVER WILLIS, JESSE CLINE, CLARK BECKHAM and J. NONE, and while they were really strong on rehearsal the night before, they fall apart at soundcheck. However, they mostly bring it together for their actual performance. Sure, David seems to mess up some of the lyrics, but he has solid tone, Jesse has great falsetto, Clark is really passionate, and J. None is a strong performer, even throwing in a James Brown-esque split. Their closing harmonies were the icing on the cake, in my opinion. Harry thinks this was a great group and J-Lo agrees, although Keith feels there were some inconsistencies. The judges vote…and all four singers are through!

-We keep things rolling after commercial…

SHEBA SQUARED

-This group consists of SHI SCOTT, ADAM EZEGELIAN, BIG RON WILSON and ANDREW BLOOM. Shi is apparently the team captain, which surprises the judges enough that Harry polls the crowd on which of the judges would be team captain if they were a group. J-Lo wins handily. The group sings “P.Y.T.” by Michael Jackson, and while it’s good individually, each person in the group got at least one lyric wrong. Still, I loved Adam and thought he stole the show. Keith thought Andrew did a good job trying to keep up with the other three voices, and he really liked Shi. Harry feels the performance revealed who’s strong and who’s weak. J-Lo adds that Andrew didn’t impress her like he thought she would. The judges say if they get a “no” today, to use that “no” to improve.

SHI SCOTT, ADAM EZEGELIAN and BIG RON WILSON advance to the next round!

ANDREW BLOOM is eliminated from AMERICAN IDOL XIV!

-A tearful Big Ron says they should have all gone through, and even says he’d consider giving up his place so Andrew could advance. He doesn’t though. Because, you know, that’d be kind of insane.

THE DREAM TEAM

-The youngest group in the competition features MADDY HUDSON, RENO ANOA’I, TYANNA JONES and STEFFI LEDBETTER. Tyanna’s mother watches from the sidelines as the kids bungled their way through “I Want You Back” by the Jackson 5. So many flubbed lyrics, and even though all of them can sing, it was a hot mess. Even “Mama Jones” recognized it, mouthing to herself that “This isn’t good.” Keith notes that Steffi’s voice didn’t match the song, while Harry notes that this day is about standing out. Ultimately, Maddy, Reno and Tyanna were the ones that stood out, meaning it’s bad news for Steffi.

MADDY HUDSON, RENO ANOA’I and TYANNA JONES advance to the next round!

STEFFI LEDBETTER is eliminated from AMERICAN IDOL XIV!

-The kids hug their teary-eyed parents backstage, and Reno’s mom and Tyanna’s mom are the most emotional. I can’t help but feel awful for Steffi though.

SAL’S GALS

-The group consists of ALEXIS GRANVILLE, JAX, SAL VALENTINETTI and…honestly, I missed the last two names. But I’ll add the video later so you can watch. Long story short, Alexis is dizzy and can’t think straight, even though she insists she’s fine. The medics check with her, and she breaks down into tears. Sal worries about Alexis’s well-being, and feels they might have to move on without her. I guess it’s still a work in progress.

TEAM DIMPLES

-This group features JAQ MACKENZIE, MICHAEL SIMEON, NICK FRADIANI and HUNTER LARSEN, and while Nick is desperate not to actually go onstage with the name Team Dimples, that’s exactly what happens, prompting him to chuckle. They sing “Rude” by Magic! and it’s easily the best performance of the night, individual or otherwise. Each person nails their part, their harmonies are on-point, and they even have a great back-and-forth at the chorus, singing the song to one another. I absolutely loved this. Harry said everyone in the room except for one person will be told “no” at one point, since only one person can win the competition. But for now, they’re all going through.

JAQ MACKENZIE, MICHAEL SIMEON, NICK FRADIANI and HUNTER LARSEN advance to the next round!

-They flip out backstage, claiming that they’re ready to show their stuff for the judges tomorrow.

SAL’S GALS…AGAIN

-Alexis apparently is suffering from exhaustion, but the doctors have cleared her to go. However, it’s a mistake. No sooner does the group get onstage does Alex start to feel faint. Sal accompanies her offstage, and she can barely stay on her feet. She collapses backstage as Sal’s Gals await their fate. Aaaaand it’s a cliffhanger!

So what did you think of tonight’s show? Did the right artists go through? Join us next week as group round continues! Until then, thanks for hanging out!

GOODNIGHT!
