American Idol: Top 10 Theme Revealed (UPDATE)

UPDATE: TVLine.com’s resident Idol expert Michael Slezak tweeted this clarification:

So it wouldn’t surprise me if we saw far more post-Idol winner’s songs than songs from their run on the series. (Please, someone do a Kris Allen song. That debut album was criminally underrated)

Color me excited about this!

-Nick

The theme has been revealed for the first live, Top 10 performance show of American Idol Season 12, and it’s a theme that pays homage to the show’s eleven-year history.

The theme?

Songs Performed by Past Winners

To clarify, this does not mean songs that the Idols have released after winning the show. It’s songs they performed while on the show. In addition, this excludes coronation songs, so no “A Moment Like This”, “I Believe” or “Home.” But hey, no one in their right mind would ever sing “Inside Your Heaven” anyway, unless forced to at gunpoint.

The theme is…well, it’s interesting, to say the least. I’m not sure it’s the best theme they could have done, but it’s certainly a change of pace from your standard Stevie Wonder Night (not that there’s necessarily anything wrong with Stevie Wonder Night). And hey, you could probably make a decent theme night with just the songs Kris Allen chose during his run through the competition.

For reference, here is a list of the songs each winner performed throughout their time in the competition:

How odd is it that it seems that Kris Allen probably has the best selection of songs? Haha.

The guys can do "It's Raining Men" as a group song.

I can't believe you looked up all of these song lists. I'm personally hoping for some Ruben Studdard homages. 205, America, 205...

I love this just as much as a hate it.

Well, it seems to me like this is really not a 'theme' at all, just a bunch of songs that are varied enough that no one has an advantage. The only thing it doesn't include is anything that might be current, or relevant. Or particularly interesting...

How strange it is to see these long lists. I'm a creative writer, and every year I take all the songs the finalists record for iTunes (yes, I buy every single one) and build a big, long story around them. For Seasons 1-5, I only had one or a few songs to use for each finalist, but from Season 6 onward I had a lot of songs to work with. Seeing these lists makes me think of the characters I created based on (and named after; I don't change any names) the winners.

@elementalman Fantasia was the one person who truly embraced every theme each week and killed each performance...

"I BELIEVE" is the Pinnacle of American Idol.

@tonyt_78 idol was so good in the early years. Those Titans carried the show. Kelly Clarkson, Ruben, Fantasia, Clay Aiken, Tamyra Gray, Vonzell, Bo Bice, Latoya London, Melinda Doolittle, Kat McPhee, Elliot Yamin, Paris Bennett, Lakisha Jones, David Cook, Archie. Great memories. The greatest show in the history of Television.
