American Idol 2014 – Recap – Top 13

Randy Jackson is sittin with the Top 13 before they perform. Sigh.

Is it just me or does the new American Idol set look like a mini-fied Dancing with the Stars set?

Theme: “This Is Me”

The contestants chose their own songs tonight. #ThisIsMe

Contestant Song Voting Number
Dexter Roberts Aw Naw 1-855-4-IDOL-01
Review: I could not understand the words he was singing. He played the electric guitar. Harry Connick Jr. flatout said he sang out of tune.
Malaya Watson Runaway Baby 1-855-4-IDOL-02
Review: This was not good. She was out of tune. This didn’t sound good at all. Malaya’s personality is great though.
Kristen O’Connor Beautiful Disaster 1-855-4-IDOL-03
Review: This was just OK for me. Kristen is the “hot” girl this season so she will go very far no matter what she sings. I think at least Top 6.
Ben Briley Folsom Prison Blues 1-855-4-IDOL-04
Review: Ben sang a Johnny Cash song on Cash’s brithday! Very smart. Cash fans would have noticed this. Great way to send a message to his target demo. Good job.
CJ Harris Radio 1-855-4-IDOL-05
Review: I like CJ but this was not a good vocal. He played guitar which was a nice touch. However, this was just not ready for primetime at all.
MK Nobilette Satisfaction 1-855-4-IDOL-06
Review: This was OK. I wasn’t blown away. The best vocal of the night so far (not saying a lot). But she has no stage presence! I wanted a bit more from her.
Majesty Rose Tight Rope 1-855-4-IDOL-07
Review: Go Majesty! Best vocal of the night so far. And she has a great personality about her. Good job.
Jena Irene The Scientist 1-855-4-IDOL-08
Review: OK she has affected singing. But I like her. So I like the affected singing, even if I shouldn’t. It’s JEEEENA b##ches. Vote! Vote! Vote!
Alex Preston A Beautiful Mess 1-855-4-IDOL-09
Review: This was a great vocal! OK I like Alex now since he’s saving this show for me right now. Thank @god was have Alex on the show. He should last long. He must. Can he win? Maybe!
Jessica Meuse Crow and the Butterfly 1-855-4-IDOL-10
Review: Solid vocal! Great job. And great song choice to represent herself. Very good.
Emily Piriz Glitter In The Air 1-855-4-IDOL-11
Review: I think she was nervous. It sounded like she was having difficulty singing… up until she reached the high notes. I think this was too low a key. She also need to do this while hanging up in the air.
Sam Woolf Unwell 1-855-4-IDOL-12
Review: GO SAM WOOLF! He needs to win American Idol! GO GO GO VOTE VOTE VOTE
Caleb Johnson Pressuring Time 1-855-4-IDOL-13
Review: Great song choice. American Idol fans LOVE LOVE LOVE this kind of stuff. Good job!

I have never seen Idol be this bad on the first week..It just sounded like amateur night..with a few exceptions, Part of it was the their stage performances but also the stage itself looked bad. Too small, too dark or something?? No production value for many of the performances. I think the sound was way off too.  Maybe their mic techniques need some work.

Somehow, I wished someone would have just sung "Against All Odds" or "I Have Nothing", I could have sung along :) Who cares about artistry? Right now, I just want fantastic singing!!!

Ok, quick: Pick the most fun or exciting performance of the night........ummm..yes, ummm. Malaya? There may be some good singers, but this isn't much of a group of performers.
I know you're going to say Caleb now, but it's just very generic for me.

Ok Alex was better than Sam. Sorry!  ALEX won the night!!!!!!!!!!!  Sam could do better than that. It was too slowed down. The tempo was too slow. Keith is right.

The second half of the show is WAY better than the first half.

Emily came out looking and sounding like Idina Menzel! Well done!

@script7  @NickRoman1Yes, Yes, Yes & Yes. Did the live show budget get cut? These performers had very little coaching in stage presence & the staging was STALE! The stage itself is underwhelming.. & what's up with moving the band off to the side? Audio problems plagued the first performers (although they had sucky song choices). I'm no audio engineer but I've run a soundboard & what I heard at the beginning of the night was a disaster. (What is it about this season that makes me so Rant-y?! LOL)

@JavisAnthonyPerez   I would think MK and Dexter got to be nervous right now.  Although I could easily see Malaya or Kristen, or even CJ go.

@Rickey  LOL!! His mentoring was as good as Cee Lo on the voice.. & by that I mean horrible!

RealityDude

@ArchieSue  It did drag a bit.. He was so tight.. Nerves? but still a good performance

@JavisAnthonyPerez Great song choice -- this is exactly the type of song I would expect from him considering the theme for tonight.

@RealityDude @script7 @NickRoman1  I so agree with you..the audio engineering was horrible. I am not a professional but the sound was flat and not well mixed. I don't want autotune but I expect to hear a certain amount of processing to enhance the performance.

@RealityDude No idea yet. I haven't heard anything indicating they won't be put up though. Last season, they didn't go up until Thursday-ish though, no?

ArchieSue

@RealityDude @ArchieSue  He looked like he was about to crap in his pants in the beginning. The girls love him though so I think he is safe. I wanted it to pick up and it didn't. Who the hell approved that arrangement.?

NickRoman1

@JimmyPotkanowicz  Ah, I stand corrected then. The only reason I can imagine for a delay is if they're waiting for the West Coast airing.
