American Idol 12 Top 10 – Worst Ever? – Poll
After 7 weeks, I can conclude that the American Idol Season 12 Top 10 is the worst Top 10 the show has produced. Season 12 arguably is the worst season of the franchise. But that’s just me. I want to know what you guys think. Is this the worst Top 10 ever?
UPDATE: Seriously, these are the guys who going on THE TOUR. Think about that for second. That’s primarily why I say this is the worst. Season 9 at least had Crystal Bowersox or even a Casey James that you could look forward to watching live. Season 9 already had a couple of “breakout” live performances before the Top 10 was announced. This batch? Nothing.
UPDATE: Also, I don’t hate these guys. In fact I love Lazaro and Kree, and I am liking Paul Jolley now and Burnell made me cry. However, if Casey James from Season 9 was in the group, he would easily be the front runner and actually win. More of my 2 cents, carry on… (I also have a rant in the comments below).

Got Something to Add?
I'd say this is a close one between Season 12 and Season 9, but I do believe Season 12 is the worst. At least Season 9 had the incredible Siobhan Magnus - this year there's no one who I can really get excited about. There are a few technically excellent singers like Amber and Candice, and a few pretty great ones like Kree and Devin, but no real stars in the bunch. There aren't even any great underdogs to root for like an Elliott Yamin. I do believe that the judges deliberately stacked the deck with mediocre guys in an effort to finally produce a female winner again. The girls are a lot better than the guys, but still - not a Carrie Underwood or a Kelly Clarkson in the bunch.
Some of them are really gifted like Amber, Candice, Burnell, Devin, Kree, Angie. Curtis? Not really. I mean he's a good singer but I just don't feel him.
my absolute favorite thing about this season is watching mariah carey uncomfortably try to think of something to say when she knows it was terrible and doesn't want to seem like a bitch.
Rickey, please stop whining about the show. We all know it's the only reason people visit your blog, anyway (No offense.) If you really think the talent sucks, why even watch and bother blogging about it? You've been whining about the lack of talent for the past few seasons, and it's kind of annoying. (I visit your blog for the polls and because I want the latest update since I'm from the Philippines, BTW.) I still watch this show because there's still always undeniable talent, like Amber Holcomb, Candice, etc. So why not blog about that instead? Your whining doesn't really do anything good for your blog or the show that made your blog popular in the first place.
I'm so glad I've not invested more than a scant few minutes of this show (and those few minutes were frightening experiences - Zoanette's hectoring "Circle Of Life," and I wept in horror when that stuttering boy drone atomized an already dismal Keith Urban song) this year, and your post solidifies my decision.
Thank you, Rickey. #IdolFree2013
So no potential bromance this season? This season has gotta suck! LOL. So desperate to produce a superstar again and forgetting to put on a good show. Duh!
this has got to be the worst top 10 in the history of the show. this season there is not a single person who i can say "oh wow, they totally stand out."
Let me just break it all down right here:
There is no WGWG and there is no tween bait. Those two factors alone kill this Top 10.
Instead we have some of the WORST performing archetypes as far as fan following in this batch:
1. Black Male Gospel Singer - Curtis - Who specifically is here because clearly he has an UNLIKEABLE personality. (Past contestantst who are better than him: Joshua Ledet, Jacob Lusk, Ruben Studdard)
2. Singer with a disability - Lazaro - OK I love him. But he is not a singer I would pay to watch, just on TV for the tear-factor and feel-good factor. (Past contestants: James Durbin Aspergers, those girls on AGT with Cystic Fibrosis)
3. Black Female Diva - Candice - There's a reason she has been rejected every single year until now: because Idol avoided this archetype due to poor response from the audience. (Past contestants who are better than her: Melinda Doolittle, etc. etc. etc.)
4. Generic Black Female - Amber - Again, even worse than the "diva" because this is more about look. (Past contestants: Syesha Mercado, Vonzell, Trenyce, Nadia)
5. Spanish Guy - Devin - Untested. Maybe the show wants to attract viewers of Univision.
6. Generic Black Male - Burnell - The worst performing archetype in the history of the show. To those who think he is the dark horse, keep on dreaming. (Past contestants: Rickey, Nikko Smith)
7. Gay Male - Paul - If you are gay and country, you might want to be closeted. "Read between the lines" as Nicki Minaj would say to Keith Urban. There is some hope here arguably because the women fans of Idol love this archetype, except that you have to be closeted in order for this to work (which is one of the reasons I hate this show). (Past contestants: Clay Aiken, Adam Lambert)
8. Female Christian Singer - Angie - Colton Dixon was popular last season, and the show might be shifting towards this demographic to assure sales in the future. Again: How polarizing is this archetype? And how big is the market for Christian music?
9/10. Female Country Singer - Kree and Janelle - They will be forever compared to Carrie Underwood and Kellie Pickler. Plus, Kree has an "older vibe" that will again turn off the younger viewers that the show needs for ratings. (I love her though, but I know it's not enough.)
Missing: Sexy Guy, Sexy Girl, Teen Girl, Teen Boy, Guy with Guitar, Rocker Guy, Even a Rocker Girl, GIRL WITH RED HAIR!
This is not the show we've loved for 11 seasons even with the ups and downs. They are stacking the cards for the white females this season.
Boring is the worst. At least Mamasox threatened to quit the show and Tim Urban got VFTW excited and Alex Lambert fans called out for justice, etc. etc. etc.
It's not the worst but it's definitely the most boring Top 10 ever.
Now I can finally say I'm done with Idol.I can't wait for The Voice!
My God no Rickey...SEASON 9 was worst ever...this is an interesting lot....I CANT STAND Curtis though.....hope i dont have to endure him too long....just wish Charlie and Zoanette had been there for a bit of fun in the mix....most of the guys bore me with the exception of Lazaro who has the audience on his side.....Paul Jolly could be the darkhorse here.....my prediction....AMBER will be the first one eliminated!
Ok I totally get Rickey's point now. lols I forgot about Casey James from Season 9! I LOVED HIM! lols Yes Mamasox was awesome and Siobhan was weird and fun to watch. Hopefully we see more personality out of this group in the future. WE so needed Charlie and Zoanette to stay. Dang it!
Season 9 is still far worst overall with the exception of a few and Lee did win that season. Ewwww....
The only guy this season with potential to be marketable is Burnell. We have a great bunch of girls this season. Kree, Candice, Amber or Angie can win. Not loving the new format though. Well maybe they will pull a Top Chef and bring someone back to compete. lols. We needed a fun contestant like Heejun last season. :( Queen Zoanette and Charlie will be MISSED!!!!!
I am actually relatively pleased, and I like seeing color in the mix.
I think part of the reason why there is some disappointment from folks is that we haven't really be able to connect to this group as of yet like past seasons. I blame the new format.
But I definitely think we have potential for exciting performances from more people this year than many seasons prior.
@JulieBarbaraThere hasn't been a Kelly Clarkson or Carrie Underwood in the bunch since Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood.
To be fair, I haven't followed this season except for what I've seen on this website. I check every now and then to see some performances and honestly, no one is worse than last season or better. For the fair part of this thought I have to say that this season's structure is quite possibly the most dense in terms of giving us something to cheer for. They still don't have good producers for this show who know how to take American Idol from all the levels they smashed it down to in seasons nigh and just deliver us back to salvation. Part of that is sitting down with each of these kids every show and ACTUALLY producing a serious contender in each of them. While I don't have direct access behind these scenes, it doesn't take a genius to know that all they do is clear a few dozen songs, sling a few of the ones they "think" sounds good on one kid and then puts in some pretty lights and a background and hope for the best.
Unfortunately, this show, it's producers and showrunners, directors and coaches are entrusting their careers to a blender and this is what you get. Mix that with a very dry pool of talent that gets drier, season after season because actual artists are now going back to Los Angeles and New York and coffee shops to fulfill their trade and find a path for themselves, then you've got a recipe for disaster. Half of these guys shouldn't be up on the stage including the judges. This show needed to be revamped four seasons ago, starting with season 9 and now it's just too late.
Haha, geez. I come back to comment once and I rage into a tangent :P I could go on and on, but pffft.
@J@MI think all 5 of them are gay.. I mean nowadays, All men are gay until proven otherwise. ;)
@J@M Wait, Curtis is gay? Wasn't he an uber-religious choir director? Or am I confusing him with someone else?
I thought all five of them were gay, I noticed Burnell also had some gay idiosyncrasies. He's my favorite though.
@additur devin is a huge talent; amber could be quite good some day; angie has talent.
There's just no one there who is about rhythm, about beat. That's what makes it kind of bland.
@jeffreychrist You came here to tell us that you haven't been watching and you will continue not to watch. Thanks for informing us. lol!
@kaostvservice if not this group, what is the worst?
@jewels I agree Season 7 was the best. Either one could win and I wouldn't mind. I liked having Jason Castro there, too. Season 9 had Siobhan Magnus, and if Simon hadn't been there, she would have gone fartherinto the competition. Loved Season 5, too!
@jewels #SEASON7FAN4EVER :D
@Rickey :) i smile when i read the first reason what make it worst is there's no WGWG, is it that the most boring reason that every people think right now *LOL*
@Rickey I lost my reply, so you're off the hook. Haha.
@Rickey Phenomenal! You may know more about their show than they do.
About the missing sexy guy/sexy girl...there's nobody who is about beat. Pop music gotta pop. From Elvis to Chris Brown, what's hot is what gets you hot. It's weird that either Dizzyfeet doesn't get that or they can't find that kind of singer. Maybe its hard to find or the singers just don't have enough rehearsal time. I remember da Voice lost Avery Wilson after a fail uptempo cover and that kid can sing. I think Adam Lambert first really got people amped about him when he did Black or White. He brought power and conviction and articulation to those lyrics.
Another thing is that they always wanna go with the sunny side on this show and man does that get dreary. So much more light in sin.
Charlie is the closest Idol was gonna come to texture this year. Take a look at the Genesis official Mama video. You'll see what he was going for. If they let him into the sing-off, which they won't, he should absolutely cover Doris Day's "Teacher's Pet" (in a very sexual way).
All this said, Devin could still leave this show and end up a very big star. He has mega talent, a cross of Bing Crosby and Julio Inglesias. "It's Impossible" was brilliant. Not very many singers could do that as well. He's just gotta pick hot songs. Angie also can be very very good with the right songs.
@Rickey i dont understand why are you so bothered about having this Stereotypes this season when you can find them in every other single competition (including the voice), so you dont like the top 10 because the stereotypes are weak and not because of their talent? i do think that theres some talent in the group and im looking forward to hear them sing.
@MichelleTishaKawai not a single chart success in 3 Seasons....The Voice is really a waste of time
@Klope62 lols.....Ok I love Charlie in that pic. :)
Lol sorry for the enthusiasm but I agree. We have not seen this much diversity in years (I wish we could have seen more if Janelle was K.O'd) - and at that they are actually good.
I also was just reviewing past contestants and this year's contestants seem to be more cut & dry as opposed to having a resident rocker, or blue-eyed soul singer or power country singer - and that's why I think it is polarizing people.
@Mikhail XO I think the long time fans have been "blinded" by this Top 10 because these are the types of contestants they've been clamouring for years, but Idol keeps on rejecting them because there is no mass market appeal. Well here they are.
@djfabian @MichelleTishaKawai You don't understand, I'm from Japan and the only Idol winner that people know here is Kelly Clarkson. I really don't care if the winner of these shows chart at all. If I love their music I'll listen to them If I don't I won't. I watch these shows just for entertainment and I think that is how it should be. I have been a fan of American Idol since Season 3 but It's been a sinking ship for the last seasons in my opinion (It's getting more boring each season, they keep removing elements that is entertaining) and It will only go down further (It's so sad) while The Voice It's new, fresh and ever-improving. I love The Voice judges more they are not dead weight and they are more current. I actually listen to all of their music. The contestants are more diverse and also I love that the finals is much shorter.
to sum up.. Idol is barely living. The Voice is new and MUCH MORE entertaining.
@Klope62 and of course I forgot WGWG in that list.
@Mikhail XO @djfabian @MichelleTishaKawai Less manipulative? Did you forget how they were desperate for Juliett to win in Season 2 so they gave her the pimp spot almost every week? How about last season when they basically changed the rules to ensure a Cassadee win?
And yes, everybody from The Voice so far has been a flop, so it's hilarious that you think it's a better show.
