American Cinema Editors Announce 2015 Nominees

We’re just two weeks away from the announcement of the 87th Academy Award nominations, and the list of likely nominees are beginning to take shape, particularly now that the American Cinema Editors have announced their 2015 nominees. Why are the ACE Eddie Awards so important? Well, they help to ascertain which films have the best shot at the Best Film Editing Oscar, which, in turn, helps us to ascertain which films have the best shot at the Best Picture Oscar, since no film has ever won Best Picture without an accompanying ACE Eddie nomination since 1980’s Best Picture, Ordinary People. Granted, it’s not long history can’t be made, since we’re hardly two years removed from Argo becoming only the second film in Oscar history to win without a Directing nomination.

Of course, all this Oscar speculation is doing a disservice to the ACE Eddie Awards themselves, since they’re an honor worthy of celebration, irrespective of what the nomination means to a film’s Oscar chances. So let’s look at who’s gotten in, shall we?

For only the second time in the history of the ACE, we have a tie in the film categories, as Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic) will now have six nominees instead of the standard five. This makes for a far more interesting category, since 9 of the past 12 winners in this category have gone on to claim the Best Picture Oscar, while the other three came from the Comedy/Musical category, which means one of the films from those two categories is almost assuredly our Best Picture Oscar winner (ugh, I’m doing it again. Sorry).

So which films and TV shows have made the cut? Check out the full list of nominees below:
