This week on Cartoon Network’s all-ages action cartoon Adventure Time, it’s back to basics. A very fun dungeon romp, Dungeon Train plays like a response to every criticism of the show. Read on!

Jake the Dog and Finn the Human are headed to explore a weird cave they heard about. Finn is still sad about girls. He’s a big dork about it, all spouting philosophy. Finn beats a boss battle, and Jake grows more bored. When they loop around to a train car they already hit, Jake is fed up. The next boss drops a future sight crystal, and Jake sees Finn as an old man still fighting through the dungeon train. Finn thinks this is cool, though, so it’s no go getting him to leave.

Jake finally leaves (or at least pretends to) and sleeps on top of the train. When he goes back to find Finn in the morning, he’s confronted by a big armored fire dude! It turns out to be suped up Finn, who defeats Jake in battle. Then, Finn looks through the future crystal and sees that Jake never leaves his side, even though he really wanted to go home. This snaps Finn out of it, and he makes things right with Jake.

A common criticism of this show is that it focuses too much of romance and character development. This episode seems like an attack on that criticism in a bunch of ways. For one, it’s a fun action episode (in contrast to the aforementioned feelings-heavy fare of recent weeks). Also, it shows that just fun an action isn’t good! Jake leaves the action and starts to think about his kids, and before they get to the train, Finn is pondering philosophical questions. Once they get into the train, it’s all action and no feelings. It’s really got a lot of nuance! Anyway, check back next week for another recap!
