ABC Moving Forward With ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Spinoff After All

Late in the most recent TV season, it was revealed that ABC had plans to develop a spinoff of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., centered on the characters Lance Hunter and Bobbi “Mockingbird” Morse, played by Nick Blood and Adrianne Palicki, respectively. The plan for the new spinoff was shelved, however, as ABC opted to keep Blood and Palicki on the mothership. But, apparently, a TV network’s prerogative is to change its mind a bunch of times.

In short, ABC has decided to move forward with the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff after all, granting a pilot order to the show, which will be titled Marvel’s Most Wanted. However, ABC would prefer you don’t call it a “spinoff,” as this series is apparently going to be a new take on Hunter and Morse. You know, except with the same actors…playing the same characters. Presumably, it’ll also take place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, much like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., making this even more of a headscratcher since, in every conceivable respect, that makes this a spinoff.

From The Hollywood Reporter:

Titled Marvel’s Most Wanted, the drama was rumored to be in early development last pilot season and was originally conceived as an Agents of SHIELD spinoff featuring both characters. However, Marvel and ABC have instead picked up a pilot for what’s being described as a new take focusing on the same duo and their continuing adventures.

The implication here is that they planned for a spinoff, but opted for “a new take” instead, which sounds kind of silly, considering that not a whole lot appears to be changing (same actors, same characters, same world). The funny part is that if they use an episode of the upcoming third season of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as a backdoor pilot for this series, it’d make this even more of a spinoff than it is already. Hell, at this point, I’d pretty much anticipate for ABC to backdoor pilot this thing, if only because they wouldn’t trust the series to launch cold. I mean, this is the network that used Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to launch Agent Carter, a show that takes place over fifty years prior to the series being used to launch it.
