trendy, I didn’t get the chance to call your *squee* earlier, but I am now! *SQUEE* I think I almost passed out when he came through the opening screen. The henley+shrunken blazer combination is apparently more awesome than a suit and tie.

As for the performance, I am sockless. And I agree about the studio version: the recording will probably replace “Always Be My Baby” as my most played track.

I said it right from the beginning once they said that Andrew Lloyd Webber was going to be the theme for one of the weeks that the only people able to pull of Phantom of the Opera better only be the 2 Davids… AND THEY DID AN AMAZING JOB!!! Phantom of the Opera is my First favorite Broadway Play along with Spring Awakening!!! =DDD 2 DAVIDS FTMFT!!! (For the Mother Flippin’ Tie) =) lol

Amazing. I was not really keen about ALW week, but DC proves he can sing anything. I prefer DC’s more “gritty” edge or rock vibe (as Simon pointed out), but Music of the Night definitely showcased DC’s vocal range much like Little Sparrow revealed his falsetto. At this point, there will be an uproar of epic proportions if he does not win. How can he not?? He’s the most versatile one there. I love it when he goes for those high notes! Anyone else smile with glee when ALW said that Music of the Night was by far the most sensual and sexiest of his songs? How fitting for DC to sing it

David Cook’s vocals & this magnificent number were destined to meet. Andrew Lloyd Webber night has resulted in another Home Run for our Cookie.
What a lovely, pure rendition of the brilliant composer’s greatests songs.

I have been voting madly with 2 phones for the past hour & a half & I just had to finally post in praise for tonight’s victor!:D And if I haven’t also said so lately, it’s definitely David Cook FTMFW!!!!

Un-friggin’-believable.

He did EXACTLY what I’d hoped he’d do and sang it straight! I actually bought ALW’s version of the song on iTunes as soon as Rickey announced what DC was doing, and as usual our Cookie sang it BETTER. Ha! I only wish he had been more dressed up. I was picturing him dressing more the way Ricky Minor did tonight.

(And wow, that was some intense exchange between ALW and DC? Methinks ALW has the hots for him too!)

BTW, I’ve never voted for anybody more than 20-25 times, but you all inspired me to sit and hit the redial button for two straight hours here on the East Coast.

Following several listens to the live & MP3 versions, this performance by David Cook has me ‘chilling’. Translated: I have ‘chill bumps’ on my arms specifically from his high note towards the end & the final notes at the very end sung in 2 octaves (am I saying that right?) that leave me simply breathless. Destined to be a hit.

Gawd! DC has surpassed AI’s expectations of him from the early rounds in the 24.

This guy is some kinda talented.

One other thing:

Tonight when ALW was saying that David’s selection was the most sensual, sexiest song, etc., I finally figured out why he is just SO dang good at enticing all of us. I mean he has a fantastic voice and tremendous range and vocal skills, but his edge is THE LYRICS.

With the exception of “Eleanor Rigby” and “Innocent”, every one of his performances is a like a private seduction (especially when you have those ear buds in your head, LOL!) His diction and enunciation are so refined, especially for a rocker. This is why I knew he had to have musical theater training, and why I was convinced he should sing it straight tonight. SO SMART!!!

#70 – Lyrics, words and enunciation – I think you’ve got it completely right! And on top of that, he knows how to relate to the lyrics he’s singing, he knows how to use all the little nuances of his voice to convey the song the best he can. And on top of hat, he has a musician ear and knows what works and what does not. He’s amazing!

I could be projecting here, but I think he sang it straight quite intentionally. Some people make the mistake of assuming that all rockers can sing is rock. His critics have labeled him a one-trick pony, turn-every-song-into-the-same-rock-formula performer, and they’re just dead wrong.

So I think singing it straight tonight was a gamble that paid off in his case. And it’s a love song, so the more understated approach was fitting. JMHO.

I personally loved that Cook followed the original version closer than he has in previous weeks. The song is supposed to be about the power of the Phantom’s compositions to carry Christine outside of herself and her world into the Phantom’s underground world of music. Webber wrote a great score that highlights the message of the song, and I am not sure if rockifying this song would have made sense.

Did anyone notice that Simon ventured into Paula territory to describe Cookie’s singing? Simon said David sounded “rounded” tonight instead of “gritty”; not too far from “textured” or “colourful” lol. He even had hand gestures!

anyway, i don’t usually venture into the archie threads but i felt like i needed to step my foot down and make a statement. rickey does an amazing job with this site (have you noticed an increase in cookie threads lately? much appreciated). i’m getting terribly annoyed though at what some of the archies are doing lately. being a devoted fan is one thing, but being unreasonable (and attacking rickey) is quite another.

I, like many others,figured DC was gonna rock us out with this song, and was very pleasantly surprised to not have that. It was a nice change not only for his fans and supporters, but for his opposers to see that he has more range and talent than they thought.

Needless to say, he had me swooning and looking intensely into his eyes. Why I would give for that TV screen to not be between him and I (or his other fans for hat matter…yes, I’m willing to share with those that share my love for him).

I think that what surprised many is that David DIDN’T turn it into a rock song which once again demonstrated his instinct in interpreting the arrangement specific to the event by following the original composition by ALW. And I kinda suspect Lord Webber appreciated that.

David Cook’s outstanding performance tonight should put to rest the ‘one-trick pony theory’ & finally cement his ability among doubters that he can sing ballads with jest a touch of DC flavor!:D

DC was flawless tonight. I have never EVER heard a singer go for that money right like that – they usually slide into it. But he went straight to it and held that thing for all it was worth. And it was pitch perfect.

So, I just rewatched MotN again, and then just listened to it, a few times. The vocals are just gorgeous, with wonderful rockerish subtle nuances that were very well controlled and used. Wow. Here’s another studio version I just can’t wait to hear.

(I wonder how long it would be? The original version is about 5:25. Not that I have a problem with listening to that for that long, obviously).

I have been a fan of David’s since his audition and I keep thinking that he will stop surprising us, that there couldn’t be any more he hasn’t shown us. Because no one is that perfect, right? But each week there is more. And, no, he’s not perfect. But I find myself counting the days until next Tuesday to see what more there is.

Zabasearch had David Cook receiving the most votes and so did Dial Idol–which he should have. That really was the best performance of the evening. David Cook showed everyone once and for all who really is the most talented and in fact gifted singer and performer. That is a very difficult song to sing and MAN Oh MAN did he pull it off. My mouth is still open from shock. Is there nothing that man can do? This performance showed that clearly he can do anything. Frankly, everything they throw at him–he succeeds with. For those people who say “the rocker” well I say “the star.” He is by far the best performer EVER AND I MEAN EVER that American Idol has every had. He clearly can do any genre. People are tagged as “the country singer,” the “blues singer,” the “soul” singer, the “rocker,” the “R&B” singer but DAVID COOK is A STAR. I really now believe that he can win this because if he doesn’t there is something terrible wrong with America. Every week he blows me away, every song he puts out is far and above any other contestant. He is in a league of his own.

David Cook–Oh my gosh! I was sitting on my living room couch clapping after one of his high notes during his performance last night.

I agree and Friedman needs to be replaced at Fox News if they really want to be unbiased and fair. His article about Carly having a single out, Carly this, Carly that…Carly was okay last night, but totally overrated by Friedman;

and Syesha was better this time, I finally saw some emotion during her performance; David A. was okay; Brooke not so much (say “Goodbye,” Brooke), and poor poor Jason (I’m sure his fans still enjoyed it and will vote for him).

None compared to David Cook, none were on the same level. I’m hope David Cook’s fans vote for him because he deserves to win AI.

I enjoy reading anubha’s comments (example: #81). Now I want to comment on David Cook’s performance.

He was in perfect pitch. He sang the song true, with just the right amount of emotion. Every high note was hit right on, no sliding. And did he surprise all of you at the end when he hit the high note, then went straight into an even higher note? He not only showed off his vocal range, but this man could sing opera, folks! And the last high note echoed. People with this kind of talent don’t come around that often.

I also want to mention that, in my opinion, a singer who is capable of appreciating other forms of music vs. just one type, will do a better job at singing their preferred music.

David Cook is a well rounded singer who is able to do great in all styles of music because he totally gets it, he gets all kinds of music!

He composes, arranges, plays instruments, has perfect pitch, is a great performer, appreciates all kinds of music, and is capable of performing all kinds of styles. Hmmmm, should I say, “David Cook is a Musical Genius”? I think that’s a very safe thing to proclaim.

And did he look good last night, or what? I might be 51, but I’m not dead…wow!

David Cook was actually awesome tonight. It was the first night that I loved his performance and have enjoyed listening to it a few times. Prior to this performance, it was just non stop rock for him and I did not enjoy it. This performance really was great. One of the best performances of the night no doubt. I call DC vs DA finale. I will be super shocked if it is not a double David finale. After today’s performance, the two Davids have proven that they indeed deserve to be the two standing up there. Now, it is just up to America to make it happen, lol. I say DA vs DC Season 7 finale.

Although David Archuleta has been my favorite from day one, I have to admit that David Cook was better tonight that anyone – I am beginning to believe that David Cook will be the lst one standing and maybe even deservedly so .

Tonight was the night for David Archuleta to shine and for Cook to fall flat – that did not happen by a long shot. David Archuleta had his chance to excel with this type of song – David Cook just proved to me that he is not JUST a rock singer – he did a great job with this song and I am glad that he did not try to switch it up.

This type of song illustrated that he does a pure , beautiful voice which I did not always see with the grittier songs – I would prefer a CD of him singing more stuff like this , but I also know that the masses would prefer the more rock variety.

Hands down that was the best performance of the nite.I listened to the audio first and then watched the video.When he was on I had to take a call during his performance,so thank god for Rickey so I can come back and review.:)This is the only perfomance I’ve listened to more than once besides Archuletta a couple of times.I can imagine hearing this on Broadway.As I type this I am playing the performance and I really feel that Cook has the chops and not only that he’s got more Gusto with each performance to bring something to the stage than the others each time.I think my opinion is swaying more to Cook now,and I was all the way the win with Archuletta.Put it this way these two are definitely going to be the last two standing.Rock Cookies:)

I agree that in David’s case, singing it straight WAS taking a risk.

It was also very smart because I think he won over a lot of fans who don’t necessarily like the rock style, but loved his voice as it was showcased here.

Looking back, the only performances that weren’t considered “molten hot” by the judges, were the ones were the background singers & music competed & overpowered his voice.

I now think that is what happened with Innocent. I remember thinking I couldn’t hear a word he was singing until the chorus hit. That, plus the fact that hardly anyone knew the song (especially the judges) but it has become one of my absolute faves of his studio recordings. My girls (6 & have specifically requested that I add Innocent to their iPods too!

I’m with you txdcfan — Innocent is my favorite too. My 13 year old boys have it on their ipod along with Billie Jean. One really likes Little Sparrow too. He’s marketable to all sorts of age groups. I can’t wait for the studio version of last night’s performance — but my guys won’t want it.

AI’s ratings are down, right? I think their choices for theme nights are chasing off the younger viewers. Even the 60’s and Mariah… My guys didn’t care to watch last night — they didn’t care about the songs.

David definitely showed is versitility in this one. Too bad his future cd release will probably be all rock though like his first cd everyone keeps talking about (and I heard). It would be great to hear more of this style from him too.

I loved the way he did it, but was a little disappointed that he put his singing scream in at the end. That almost ruined it for me.

As for the pimp spot placement, a few people have mentioned that DC keeps getting the pimp spot, but he’s only had it twice. The first for Billie Jean, and then last night. Archie also had the pimp spot twice this season, and Michael Johns as well. I think people *think* Cookie has had the pimp spot many times because his performances stick out in their minds. For instance, last week, where he was second last, but overshadowed (in my opinion) the performance of last singer (Jason, who was also awesome).

I honestly think that David Cook is the smartest contestant on AI, even more so than KLC. People not noticing you? Grab their attention with a stunning new version of Hello. People complaining you’re getting predictable? Blow them away with a spectacular rendition of Billie Jean. People whining about how you steal covers? Make your own arrangement of a well-known pop hit, then perform it so well that it outsells every other artist on iTunes for two weeks straight. People muttering that all you do is rock? Seduce every woman in the room with a fantastic straight-cover of Music of the Night. I don’t think there’s ever been another AI contestant who’s shown this much growth throughout the show despite all the vicious rumors spat at him. reinharv – why do we have to back up just one person? I don’t think Rickey backs up the wrong person, I think he back ups all the right ones, and kudos for that. The more talented performers we have the merrier, and honestly, I’m looking forward for this season’s final stages – it’s been a very long time without any real tension, so it’s about time.

David Cook is so talented and by far my favorite on the show, and for that Sole reason I do not want him to win American Idol, David Archuleta should be the victor of American Idol, AI can market David Archuleta easier then they can market David Cook, David cook is better off not winning AI and not being tied down to a contract…like Chris Daughtry..only better

Brooke should have gone home, but she wasn’t even in the bottom 2? What is going on here? Syesha was great and she was in the bottom 2? I actually half-enjoyed Carly’s performance (when she wasn’t yelling/screeching), and she went home. Yuk (well, she was going to go home sooner or later, anyway)!

I agree that Syesha will probably not do as well once we leave the theater music behind. I really hope Brooke leaves next week, though.

My pet peeve about Brooke is she has such a big head that she stops the music, stops the flow, she is soooo not a performer! NOW that was a big mistake, no matter what Simon and Randy said. And when did Simon and Randy change their tunes about contestants forgetting their words? (David A. at least kept the flow going, covered so well many people never noticed it, and that is the test of a true performer!!). All of a sudden little Brooke is just so wonderful and this is the second time her ego has stopped the music to restart from the beginning. She’s wasting our time, folks. She isn’t as good as she thinks she is. And I think I heard her trying to start another argument from the stage–I want her gone. She’s done, she’s not winning, she doesn’t have a chance. Finally Paula stood up and said something of substance, you just don’t stop in the middle of a song!!!!! Just don’t do it!

Anyway, in my opinion, no big loss that Carly went home. Glad Syesha is still in it, although I think she might go home next week if Brooke doesn’t first, and I really want Brooke to go home already!

David Cook for the win! His vocals are spot on perfect, out of the world vocal range, and sweet sweet high notes. Yummy!
