OMG — Naomi Judd just confirmed our worst fears. She was on the Today Show yesterday morning, and was asked about American Idol and David Archuleta. She said that she loved David, but went out of her way to give a shout out to Jeff Archuleta to “leave David alone”. I think she was about to say “monster dad” but she said that Jeff Archuleta is like the “worst stage dad” and they had to put Jeff Archuleta in the security guard box — confirming earlier reports that Jeff Archuleta had to be restrained during Star Search for harassing contestants: NY Post, Entertainment Tonight. Wow.

Kinda explains everything. Why David Archuleta is a nervous wreck almost every night. Why Simon Cowell alluded to David not choosing his songs. Makes me believe that Jeff Archuleta did shout at David during the recording of “We Can Work It Out.” There were also rumors during the CMT Music Awards a few days ago that Paula Abdul and Naomi Judd were “trading notes” about Jeff Archuleta — which could mean that he has not changed. This is not good Arch Angels. I think the David Archuleta shock elimination is now in play, possibly Top 3. If TPTB get too annoyed with Jeff Archuleta, they will not give the title to David. They will after all be dealing with him and not David during contract signing, and if David doesn’t win, it gives Clive Davis and the crew more leverage.

Still not convinced Rickey…David is too well centered, grounded, and happy to have a dad from hell. David loves his father and this is hurtful to him. Again I say this isn’t helping David at all by stirring up garbage. Continuing to keep this crap in the media is what is going to ruin David’s chances at winning.

You know, I love David and vote non-stop and I come here to read all the time but have only posted twice. One thing really gets me and that is why does no one seem to give David A. the credit he deserves for being a very intellegent, basically straight-A student who can deal with the pressures in his life. I have known many, many kids who have been under extreme pressure (state-level sports competitions, soccer moms/dads, etc. and most of those kids can actually hold their own against their parents. They love what they are doing and ARE under pressure and a lot of it is the pressure they put on themselves to do well in school and sports, debate, ivy league college entrance, dance, etc. Who knows about his dad but I believe that David at 17 has learned how to cope with his pressures like many other very smart, dedicated, focused kids who actually set goals for themselves and are emotionally mature enough to be looking to the future instead of out drinking with the in-crowd. Yikes, this annoys me. These people being interviewed need to show David some respect for being the mature kid that he is. That doesn’t mean that he doesn’t worry, etc. but I am sure that he is fully capable of coping with his parents, Ryan Seacrest and all the crap that he is going to hear is written/said about him when he gets out of the bubble that is American Idol.

David can look happy and content and still have an overbearing stage dad. It’s showbiz. Not everything is what it seems.

We still love David Archuleta of course, but this is significant because someone from Star Search has now openly confirmed that Jeff Archuleta is the “worst stage dad.”

Rickey, Confirmation or not from Naomi Judd, my opinion about David A. remains the same. I look at david A overcoming all this trash from the media (truth or not) about his father and i’m just amazed at how well david has handled himself and how he continues to come out each week stronger than before. This makes me want to go above and beyond for our Archie on all the Tuesday nights from here until he is crowned the next “American Idol”.

they interviewed some of David’s close friends about this subject, and all of them said that Jeff wasn’t like that. I just don’t know what to believe.

I really hope this isn’t the kind of story that is rumored about for a while and then set aside only to come back and cover the front page of every major magazine when American Idol is over. David definitely doesn’t need this hanging over his head while he’s trying to build a career.

I know that there are so many Archies who would support David even more if it were true, though.

This just sickens me.

She said he was a the worst stage dad during Star Search and she should know. But, she also hasn’t seen them in 5 years.

The interviewer said they asked Chikeze who roomed with them and he said that he didn’t see any evidence of that. If he roomed with them, he had to have spent quite a bit of time.

Must be *something* to it, but bad enough that AI will eliminate him — truly doubt it.

TO ALL OF YOU DAVID A. LOYAL FANS: I beg you not to give up voting for David. What Rickey mentioned here about the shock elimination being in play bothered me a lot. I can’t vote for David cause i am from the Philippines. But you guys have the power to put David to the top. the American Idol 2008 title.
I do not know Ms. Judd, she’s is not known here in the Philippines so i wouldnt really know her credibility. But in case she is really telling us the truth, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE. Don’t give up on David. David Archuleta is the epitome of a true blue american idol. We’re a witness to how strong a character he has last elimination night. Choosing to stay neutral despite the pressure given by that evil seacrest, just so he won’t hurt other people’s feelings. David is a true Gem. And at this point… I am so afraid that his votes might get affected by this terrible news.

What happened to that old adage, “if you can’t say something nice…”?

It surprises me that someone would be so willing to say something so mean about someone that they don’t even know. Perhaps Mr. Archuleta was overbearing back in the Star Search days, but Mrs. Judd stated that she doesn’t even watch AI, let alone have any understanding of the contestants’ current personal lives. It’s unfortunate, because as someone who interacted with him at such a young age, she must have some more positive points she could have mentioned. Why no mention of his poise, his mature voice, or why she wanted to give him 5 stars and why she believes he will make it big?

That being said, I think it’s important that Rickey posts any information that comes around, even if it can be interpreted as negatively portraying a favourite. Archie’s fans deserve access to any allegations that may tar their boy, and they can each make up their own minds as to the validity of the claims.

In my opinion, the people who are accusing Jeff Archuleta all seem a little self-important, feeling powerful because they have “insider information” about someone who is currently in the limelight. The fact that they are so willing to divulge this information, and that they do not leave any wiggle room for improvement on the part of Mr. Archuleta, has me questioning the strength of their claims. They may be partially based on fact, but I feel as though the accusations are probably inflated.

If Archie is suffering below his father, then I really, really do feel for him. But, time makes you bolder and children get older, and we all have the chance to move away from people who do not benefit our lives. I sincerely hope that David A is enjoying every moment of being on AI, and would like to believe that he is capable of handling some pressure from family members. I don’t think he’s as fragile as he appears.

Well said, Anubha. I couldn’t agree more. I don’t always trust the media. David’s dad may be strict but I know that David came from a loving family. I have no doubt of this. They couldn’t get any dirt from David so they have to turn on his family. How low can they get? It makes me sick. As much as I want David to win, I would rather him lose the AI crown than lose his soul in the process. It’s not worth this.

Anyway, this negativity about his Dad should not impact any of the fans support for David, but for David’s sake I would like if such matters are not raised on a regular basis. I am sure it puts more pressure on him and his family. I am not contesting the validity of either naomi’s statement or the star search contestant’s statement, or questioning Rickey for bringing it up. I just feel bad for David when stuff like this is brought up, as he seems to be very attached to his family.

Unfortunately for DA, I think Rickey raises a good point.

Shelly – alot of amazing kids have nightmare parents – though I agree a media storm about this isn’t good for DA because it would just upset his father more. In that sense, I’m surprised Naomi brought it up on national television. It puts more pressure on DA to profess that it ain’t so – like he did after Simon said he didn’t think he was making his song choices.

I think it’s interesting that the interviewer seemed to cut off Naomi a couple times, mentioning Chikezie and then especially at the end – afraid of a slander lawsuit?

collegemom – i think many people give DA credit – he’s obviously handled incredible pressure well thus far, and I’m sure will continue to. But I wouldn’t compare this to soccer moms/dads, etc. – THAT’S not giving DA enough credit! The months-long pressure from an internationally-televised tv show that airs live with the potential of harsh judgement heard round the world, followed by having an entire nation invited to vote on your worthiness – that is through-the-roof pressure for anyone – but especially for a 17-year old, and especially a sensitive soul.

And all that pressure is also on DA’s father, who surely wants to do the right thing for his son, though his perception of the “right thing” might be open to interpretation.

Easy to worry or want to protect DA because he is such a good kid. I’m sure he loves his Dad and wants to please him and his family, just like he’s said he doesn’t want to let anyone down – like the entire state of Utah! Krikey – pressure much?

Of course DA thinks he’s autonomous and independent from his parents. What 17 year old doesn’t?

Fortunately the kid has talent out the wazoo, and he’ll soon enough be on his own, and this too shall pass…

There are just alot of rotten people in this world.

Hi all! Long time reader and first time poster. Well, I’ve been worried about this since we first heard the stage dad stories. I’m of the opinion that where there’s smoke there’s fire. Hopefully it isn’t too bad, but I definitely get the feeling that something isn’t quite right regarding David’s dad. I just hope he’s okay cause he seems awfully nice and is so talented. I’ve just had a nagging feeling that he acts a little scared. I’ve read that some people don’t think he could possibly be that humble and oblivious to how many fans he has, but I think the look of relief that he has when the judges praise him or when he’s safe for another week is a clear sign that something has messed with his self esteem.

And hopefully this isn’t out of line but I need help from some fellow Arch Angels. I want to start a message board specifically for us adults to discuss our favorite LG. The only problem is I’ve never made or moderated a board and could use some advice/help. Obviously I love all the message boards/threads that are currently available to us, but I’ve been finding myself wanting a place just for grown ups to talk and just decided I needed to do it myself. I think you should also post the link from fanblast just to hear the story from every side.

Even if it is true, it can’t be that bad. David is a nice kid, very wellgrounded and that only comes from a happy family.
. and even if it is that bad, he is handling it well. Anyway, he is going to be 18 soon. The media, the public, the record execs shouldn’t be swayed by this. He has the talent, and only that tmatters. I am just so sad and disturbed at how the media persistently keep coming back to this. It’s like let’s have everything staked against David Archuleta and see if he is strong enough to overcome or break under the pressure.

I have so so much love for this kid, this young man, this angel and this only makes me want to support him more and yes now more than ever want him not only to reach top 2 but to win it all. So your top 4 or top 3 elimination shocker conspiracy can go out the window because this will only rally the Archies to vote more. and if it does turn out TPTB is going to throw him under the bus, or record execs are going to ignore him because of a stage dad, we his fans will be there for him. I’m sure there are professional producers, musician, managers, songwriters, publicists, stylists, agents, advertisers etc etc amongst his fans,and need be, we will make sure his career takes off! I am not good with words so I’ll let others better express it more elequently. Only this, US fans, pls make sure David wins this thing.

Rickey, I’m disappointed you posted this, and I’m a little miffed that you’re being such a fatalist about some “shock elimination” in the Top 3. You’re just getting people riled up.

You do realize Naomi Judd isn’t the most centered person on the planet? Judges on Star Search didn’t interact with the contestants or their parents. Who knows what she knew from actual first-hand knowledge. Heck, she could have heard the rumors just as we did earlier this year and assumed they were true.

But, you know what? No matter what David’s personal life is like, WE’RE not in a position to do squat about it. So why drag up all the unsubstantiated dirt and then speculate that it’ll get him kicked off the competition? It’s this type of negative thinking that causes people to give up. There are two sides to every story, and you just gave the side of a kooky country singer who probably hung around David for all of 10 minutes. You failed to mention that, in the same interview, the journalist discussed how Chikezie DENIED anything bad was going on.

Rumors beget speculation beget more rumors. You’re making it worse for David–not better.

The more these rumors are spread, the more the focus is taken away from David and his singing. He’ll be the “kid from AI who has that awful stage Dad,” not the “kid from AI who has that gorgeous voice.” David’s journey in this competition is about David. And we as fans aren’t here to judge based on what gossip gets passed around on the internet. Please, let’s bring it back to David so that maybe, just maybe, people will actually begin to listen again when he sings rather than think he’s being forced to sing.

For the record, those in the know (Justin Guarini, actually) discussed how it was Nigel, and not David’s Dad who Simon thought chose “You’re the Voice.” TMZ just grabbed onto the statement and made some stuff up. Nigel apparently loves the song and was seen dancing along to David’s performance.

Great. The hits just keep on coming. I don’t really see the point of posting this on your site. It’s obviously already aired on a major network. Isn’t that enough publicity? Sigh. I’m surprised by how David’s fans and supporters often use so little judgement in what they say and how they promote him. Your 100% certainty yesterday that he would win reveals why you probably feel so bold as to post this. I’m an avid supporter of David. 100%? Did you watch AI on Tuesday? And you still think he has a 90% chance of winning after seeing Cook’s performance and the response? This competition is fierce and much, much tighter than you think. He is no sure thing and hasn’t been for a few weeks now. So I’m displeased to see you furthering the negative chatter that could very well erode more of his support. Truth or not, it doesn’t mean the kid is suddenly less talented. And truth or not, this wasn’t a very smart video to post.

Naomi Judd has no class at all trying to stir controversy by talking about David’s dad controlling like it happened just few days ago. My goodness that was 5 years ago when David was 12. I was spanked and scolded by my parents at a young age when I dont do my homework or do chores or for coming home late. It’s natural to be led and be guided when we are young and I thank my parents for that, otherwise I would have been a train wreck(Does Brittney, Paris ring a bell?). David grew up to be a happy, well-mannered child. Just shows what kind of upbringing he was raised to. They are a close-knit family and he has a lot of friends. Looks like a typical teenage kid to me. His friends who created a site to talk about David said David tried out for AI not really expecting much. Even his voice coach’s recent interview(post When you Believe) said David’s attitude is that if he wins this great if not he is fine with it. Doesnt sound like he was pressured by his dad to “not mess up or else”. This story is definitely old.

By the way look what I dig about Naomi Judd’s being a control freak herself to her daughters Wynonna and Ashley Judd. This is from Ophrah:

I do not consider any of this to be devastating news, but rather sensationalistic and distracting.

I’m sure David A. would not want this discussion to continue, especially among people who do not know his father or anybody else involved.

Rickey, it was a bad decision to post the video with an alarming headline.

IMO, most parents of a 12 year old who is performing and exposed to a national audience, would be so-called stage parents. Probably over-protective and often annoying to those in charge and that’s just the way it is.

Let’s not judge Jeff Archuleta until he has the opportunity to defend himself.

David A. seems happy to me. His voice coach has said several times, that David does not even consider himself in a competition. He just likes to sing and perform for those who appreciate his talent. I adore that kid.

Excuse me, how can you accuse me of not getting it? I LOVE Clay. I was just saying the TPTB probably won’t want a winner who- in my opinion- shares similar characteristics with Jordin, Clay, and Melinda whether in terms of age or musical tastes.

The only reason why I would even want to make such a speculation is to say that Rickey may have a point. I find it absolutely disgusting that overzealous Archie fans would criticize Rickey for posting this news.

I don’t care what Judd says, I don’t buy it. She was around in a very limited capacity as a judge and may have heard a rumor. That doesn’t make it gospel.

If David’s dad was as bad as they say, he would be a head case. He’s not. He’s the opposite–happy, sweet, and well-adjusted. I think the story is overblown, if not completely BOGUS.

I think David has turned out as well as he has because he has a good, loving family. The media loves to destroy people, is going after David’s family because they have nothing on him. He’s angelic. I don’t buy it.

David Archuleta is already a superstar, whether or not his Dad is, as some reports are saying; whether or not he wins American Idol, whether or not YOU vote for him.

If David were to leave the competition right this very minute-I know 2 things are certain:

1. He would have a record deal immediately.

2. HE HAS AMASSED AN ARMY OF FANS AROUND THE WORLD.

David will become an adult very soon and he will make his own decisions, I have no doubt.

Ugh. I don’t even want to post under this heading. (But of course I don’t fault you, rickey, for putting forth news which you deem important. It is your blog and you are wonderful to provide a place for fans.)

Indulge me this comment about the whole stage-dad debate. Every one of us has a family. Every one of us has issues about said family. My cousins thought my dad was horribly strict and ‘mean.’They lived with us from time to time when their own parents (who I thought were alcoholic, emotional wrecks!) lost control of them. It’s all a matter of perspective, and Naomi Judd and her own daughters have had issues. Google them if you don’t believe me.

I don’t know if Judd’s comments were planned. I do know that David Archuleta is a wonderful young man who, I believe, has had tons of parental love and support.

Food for thought…I find it disturbing that some (not necessarily here) would consider no longer supporting David for American Idol because of some unsubstantiated rumor. The only reason Jeff is not defending himself is because he’s not permitted to. His silence should not be misconstrued for any truth. I know some have question whether David wants this and we may never know. While I firmly believe he hates the competition aspect, we all know he loves to perform. I think he’s anticipating the end of the show (regardless of the outcome) so he can do what he does best – without judges, without losing friends along the way. Make no mistake though – HE wants the title and all that goes along with being American Idol. We need to support him in this effort now more than ever.

It’s unfortunate that this kid’s dad is what he is. Like all of us David will have to deal with the hand he is dealt as best he can. Some of us do it well and some don’t. This American Idol experience is doing him a world of good is my guess. Fans adoring him and fellow contestants who have become true friends and supporters. That’s strong stuff.

As for Naomi, she was asked a question about david on Star serach and it was just a natural part of the conversation for her to mention what she knew about Jeff and david. I liked her “leave him alone” shout out. I thought it was funny and it can’t hurt…I don’t think… for Jeff to know that his behavior is under very wide scrutiny. Maybe he is behaving better now and maybe BECAUSE his earlier behavior made the news. We can only hope.

As for Rickey posting it…so many of you want it both ways. This site is so much about David Archuleta that if something comes up like a current interview that confirms earlier stories that I expect and hope to find it here. I want the while story not just the rosie parts. How else can I know all I can (sitting thousands of miles away) about these kids and this show. Knowing about his relationship with his father helps me know David better. Helps me (maybe) understand his demeanor, his reactions, his almost apologetic response to the adulation.

Davis is 17, he’s growing up, this show is maturing him as we watch. It won’t be long (if it hasn’t happened already) that he’ll control the relationship rather than vice versa…I hope.

I am not sure what this story changes. I mean, I think we all knew his dad probably was pretty involved and is overbearing and I can see him being a control freak, but then again much of this is based on info 7 years ago, with 1-2 recent reports that then just cite the old stuff and try to make it more credible.

There also is just the natural way parents manage a 10yo versus a 17yo. Think about it — weren’t your parents much more authoritative and in control of you as a TEN year old versus a 17 year old? Not to mention if you’re 10yo on a national tv show with $100k on the line. I also think Star Search was probably less developed and more susceptable to his dad’s interference than the powerhouse machine of AI. His dad probably knows to back off after the stuff started this season about him being too much to handle. At the same time, David is working with the musical director, vocal coach @ AI, Dean, and others — gaining more confidence and becoming more mature. No matter how giggly and low-key he is, he’s still 17 and I think there is some rebellion and independence in him.

And Rickey, as for the conspiracy for knocking out DA b/c they don’t want to sign with his difficult dad… I don’t follow. It’s not like it would be the first time the music industry had to deal with a difficult personality!! Plus, I don’t think DC will be any less difficulty.

This could explain many things. Why David hasn’t been signed previously. Why David had the “vocal paralysis” revealed on his audition show. Why Daivid rarely sings “fun songs” and almost always picks an inspirational song.

There is nothing bad about the information. In fact it may garner sympathy for David, especially if the nothion of the only way to get David out from under his dad’s thumb is for him to win Idol.

… one more thing about the elimination theory: I believe 19 Entertainment has first right of refusal for contracts and there is NO WAY they will not sign David. Win, place or show. So, it doesn’t add up to me and it really isn’t helpful to open doubt as fans.

I agree. I think rickey is W O N D E R F U L but I’m not happy about this thread simply because David has so many fans of all varieties, and some will let this continued news piece to affect them without thinking too much about ramifications or subleties. I suppose all is fair, as the frontrunners in the competition are all receiving good and bad press.

I don’t mind knowing about this because I’m an adult who has experienced family life from many perspectives: as daughter, mother, daughter-in-law, sister-in-law etc.

I will say that Archie must really want this, and his dad must really want it for his son, or they wouldn’t have allowed this private piece of their lives to be scrutinized. It there’s any truth to it at all, and I think there is *some* truth to it, they had to see it coming, don’t you think?

And here’s my plan for the day. I’m going to post away, all day, hopefully with 95% positive and non-state-dad-related posts until this durn thread gets filled and rickey finally gives us the great red-shirt pics we want to see, with a ‘happy’ caption.

Boy, I sit down with my cup of coffee, and log onto this.

I echo the thoughts of those who say Rickey has every right to post whatever he wants on his own blog. We’re just lucky he gives us a place to come and post away to our hearts’ content about our love for little David.

As for this latest wave on the story that doesn’t seem to die, I don’t know what to believe (although Naomi Judd sounds high in the interview … or is that the way she always talks?). I’m just going to wait and see how it all flushes out. I just wish David’s 18th birthday was in the summer instead of December, so this wouldn’t be an issue in terms of momentum, his signing a contract, etc.

I stopped posting comments here because I believed you showed critically poor judgment in defending a favored and highlighted commenter who uses vile words like “pedarest” to describe David’s gay older male admirers while apparently thinking nothing of the older female admirers who post all manner of suggestive comments and who are whimsically referred to as “cougars.” This is the worst kind of self-loathing homosexual double standard, and I am still reeling at the idea that you defend such a perspective.

You would rather believe a judge on the show than a contestant that has actually interacted with the Archuleta family. Do you not think there is circular reporting going on here? When NYPost and TMZ are sources, people should think first before writing.

i must say i am terribly disappointed. one can post what they want, but i certainly would have had different judgment and wouldn’t have spun the story in such a way. fanning the flames (of what may or may not be real) is not cool.

I agree with Rascal, and this will be the last time I visit the rickey site, which until now, was my favorite place to be.

I’d like to add that if the producers really were ignoring votes and choosing their own eliminations, and if they wanted to get rid of Archie to avoid his father (which is a laughable notion), they would have gotten rid of Archie before now. Flawed logic here on several levels.

First, AI would be finished, DONE, if it was ever revealed that votes did not count. And if votes did not count, that information would surely get out. AI is a gold mine; TPTB would never jeopardize it. The producers do not choose who to eliminate. It’s just too risky, and after all, the AI money is made from the show itself, not from the success of the winner. They are much less concerned with who wins than with ratings. The ratings will be lost if viewers’ votes did not count. There’s just no advantage to the producers to manipulate votes.

Second, Judd is rehashing a story that has already been in the media for weeks. She has no new information. She has not “confirmed our worst fears.” This is behavior that took place over 5 years ago. If Jeff behaved this way (which the girl in question has refuted) than so be it. There has been nothing to confirm that he is behaving this way now. And even if he is, it’s a private, family matter.

If anything, the Archie fanbase will get stronger and vote harder, and the casual voter may feel sympathy and vote more. When it comes down it, though, the casual voter will just vote for who is best on any given night, and the true fan will vote like crazy for two hours. Nothing is going to change for the worse.

So rickey, I just don’t understand this thread at all. I’m so disappointed. You’ve been such a staunch Archie supporter with a level-headed view of the trash that the media tries to stir up, and now you’re stirring as well.

BUT when it’s on one of the biggest DA fan sites, EVERYONE of us will ready it and it doesn’t look good for TMZ-style junk to be on like the #1 DA Fan site.

Like you, I want David Archuleta(DA)to win American Idol(AI). The recent confirmation by Naomi Judd that DA’s Dad is the worst stage Dad could be worrisome. I agree with Rickey that this might push AI to decide not to make DA the winner. But, I will not worry about it because it is beyond my control. We have, however, some control over DA’s detractors by responding and neutralizing their attacks. If we don’t respond, the negative impact would linger that could lead other DA fans to abandon and not vote for him.

Besides the fans, there are many other players involved. Fox TV, Coca-Cola, Ford Motors, Ipod/Itunes, MP3, the phone companies such as AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, etc., record producers and many others. The players are linked together like a chain, all of them driven by profit motive. Unfortunately, the fans are also linked to the weakest link in the chain, the phone companies. Their input could be disregarded because their function as a conduit is limited to receiving and transmitting votes. Fans are allowed to cast as many votes as they want or could afford. Therefore, total votes do not necessarily mean the same total sales. The players have to rely on other factors, particularly the data gathered from their different market segments as the basis for making decisions. Our votes could be set aside specifically under two conditions: 1) The difference between the No. 1 and the No. 2 positions is nil; and 2) The contestant who received the larger votes does not fit the majority of the players’ market segments. In this case, it is both possible and probable for DA to lose if he’s only ahead a little and he doesn’t fit the players’ market segments. The only way for us to prevent this is to give DA an overwhelming number of votes that can’t be ignored or set aside. It will help a great deal if we don’t lose votes by neutralizing attacks against DA.

Another concern is DC seems to be gaining on DA. I became more concerned when the judges told DC he could be in a movie sound track. Are they now sending signals to the movie companies that DC
will be the winner? And that they are ready to sit down and negotiate with them in using DC to record movie sound tracks?

Let me repeat, attacks against DA must be answered. The bad publicity these attacks can generate for DA could cost him the title unless we neutralize them. Please help by letting me know about these attacks so I can respond. Thank you King00 for leading me to Chris Sligh’s
column attacking DA. Please give me the instructions on how to make the link to enable me to respond. Thank you KH. I’ll appreciate receiving your instructions about this also.

You know I don’t believe this is a smear campaign.
First of all I would think it would make you Archie fans feel for David and like him more. One of the reason I don’t believe it is a smear campaign and one of the reasons in the past David A. has gotten on my nerves is the way he acts when the judges judge him and when he talks to Ryan afterwards. He acts like he is very nervous and almost on the verge of tears. That is why I have wonder what the heck is wrong with the kid. I think it all fits. I am not bashing him, actually I look at him in a different light now.
I have always believed he has a wonderful voice but didnt like his nieve, nicey nicey, act. Now I see why he is the way he is if this is all true.

Heck, think about it, someone most likely his parents had him stand somewhere outside where the first AI contestants would be leaving and stop them and ask if he could sing for them and he did sing for them. That was one of his moments they showed before he sang on stage this year. Kelly Clarkson said OMG that was good, etc. He had to be very young then, someone pushed him to do that. I thought it was kind of weird, and really my first reaction to that was who would have him do that? I kind of felt embarrassed and sorry for him.
I do believe “Dad” is one of those parents…

I have not read any of the comments above-so if there is any redundancy, I apologize. Rickey, do not worry, the shock elimination won’t happen “because of his dad.” The reason being-the Fox people are smart and David A has been on their radar for quite sometime-via the star search thing (he also sang with Kelly C, in some event I read), so they must have known about his dad being what he is-right “from the beginning”. It is nothing new to them and they must have some plan to cope with this scenario. I do not know how their system works and if they really tweak the votes etc, but chances are that he will win (unless David C or someone else pulls a miracle and stops him). If it is a shock elimination, it would be because someone else proves him or herself to be better vote-getter and if they do eliminate him irrespective of votes (which I think is highly unlikely), it would be based on other criteria such as salebility etc, not because of his dad.

Good grief!
This is something that just occurred on network TV, it has very much to do with David Archuleta who you all want very much to post about, admire, listen to, and offer your conjectures about this that and the other concerning his performances, personality, etc., and yet when Rickey posts about it and offers HIS conjectures, some of you go postal.

It’s a real story. Did Dad act badly, did he not, how has this affected this young star? If you’re going to be bigtime “fans” be prepared to deal with all aspects of your particular “idol’s” story. What’s the harm in considering it all?

And please don’t think, because you watch a guy sing a song, respond to some questions and critiques, and perform in some commercials, that you know him or his family life. Unless you’re there and close to his REAL life you just don’t know! Can you say O.J.?

And before you all go nuts on me I’m not EVEN saying David or Jeff is like O.J. Ha ha I’m sure a couple of you went there right away! I’m saying I, like so many others, watched him play football and act a fool in movies and felt a certain comfort with who we thought he was. Oops!

Thanks for letting me know what was said on The Today Show. I want to know it all! Thanks also Ricky for being a great Archie supporter. Thinking he has a 90% chance of winning is great.

I know his family can’t talk to the media, but I’m surprised that it hasn’t been denied in a more roundabout forceful way. I think his Dad is very savy and wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t care that this is making some headlines. I’m sure they know gossip goes with the territory and may even be happy that he is getting some exposure. The story is bad, but it is extremely sympathetic for David and may balance those that don’t like him because they think he’s been given a free ride and had it easy. Face it, scandals are what sells and his Dad seems like a strong, steady (possibly ambitious) person so I doubt this bothers him. I think it helps David.

Well…oh boy, that was a lot of reading.

I believe that NOBODY ever has to coax LN to sing. (refer to #103 regarding David made to sing to KC) I know most of you here have seen every little smippet of video that shows DA from age 10 until now. How often have you heard someone that knows him, whether it be a schoolmate or voice coach, say that David sings ALL the time?

The kid would probably sing anywhere for anybody because he LOVES to sing. That is hugely what is so special and endearing about him.

Please don’t make this Dad thing more of a big deal than it already has become. Enough! It’s history, so let it rest.

I guess I’ll go over to the ’sit off’ thread now. Some of these posts send my blood pressure up.

Guys, I have kept quiet about this since this first hit the media because David A. is not my contestant of choice. However, I would bet a lot of money that this overbearing stage dad story is true. As a practicing psychiatrist (and the victim of an overbearing stage mom myself), David’s body, tone of voice, and the look in his eyes leak a lot of information to me. I first noticed it during Hollywood week, and have seen it during just about every performance and Q&A session that he does. That boy is terrified of something or someone. Don’t believe me? Look, and I mean really look closely, at his eyes during this past week’s performance. There is no joy there, and it’s evident. Listen to his answer to Ryan on results night this week. Watch where he turns his gaze after giving an answer almost every time he is asked a question. Here’s a hint…he looks toward “dad”, which is approval seeking behavior that is commonly seen in kids with abusive parents. Since he has so much experience on stage, it is highly improbable that it is stage fright. What I see is someone that is most likely the victim of emotional and verbal (and possibly physical) abuse by a parent or guardian.

As for people trying to say that if the StarSearch girl doesn’t remember it, then it’s not true. If she truly doesn’t remember it, then it’s most likely because she was so young, she blocked it out (our way of coping with extremely stressful events), or had a family that protected her from the bulk of the harassment. If she does remember it, she and her management are smart enough to refrain from saying anything negative since she is trying to launch an album.

To the people that say that this story isn’t true because DA’s friends say they have never seen evidence. It’s highly unlikely that they would because fear and intimidation are almost always done in private, and it’s even more improbable that David would tell anyone about it due to fear of incurring the wrath of his abuser or because of embarrassment.

Lastly, I want to point out that on a subconscious level, most people can recognize someone that is suffering or being abused and be subconsciously and compulsively drawn to them without really understanding why. I can tell that a lot of DA’s fans on this forum are soccer mom types (good, loving, nurturing parents) that feel extremely (too much at times) protective of him. I’ve read repeated posts on here from fans that can’t understand why they are so caught up in him, especially because they are old enough to be his mom. The reason (in addition to the fact that he really does have a good voice) is that you sense something is not right (although you may not even be aware that you do) and instinct to protect and nurture kicks in.

I guess most of my fellow Archies are going to dislike me for this but I have to speak up.

First, this is Rickey’s blog and he is free to post as he llikes.

Second, I have never had the impression that this is the number one DA fan site. I come here often but usually have no time to go through all the endless posts, unless I missed something? and Rickey also opens threads for other contestants. At least, I have never viewed Rickey.org as the number one DA fan site. Majority posters are DA fans yes, but no more. Therefore, I think asking Rickey to remove the thread is going too far. Just because Rickey keepsgiving us new thread everyday so we can post to our heart’s content does not give us the right to decide what he should post. However, I do agree that Rickey should also include links to articles disproving the Stage dad story so we have a balance perspective. Maybe Rickey got so upset that he didn’t think of that.

I think Rickey is still a DA fan. He just loves his conspiracy theories. Hey he has one for Carly as well, and she is his fav contestant besides DA. Let’s not fight please.. I understand some of you Archies wants to leave the site because of this, that is sad and I will miss you all. Please continue supporting DA whereever you go to, that is the most important.

Rickey, to level the field, why not you post about David Cook and Jason Castro having a girlfriend? If you want to go tmz style that is. though those stories aren’t negative as compared to this one.

Love you Rickey. Do not get so worked up about the stage dad, the best way to combat that is to keep supporting DA, and campaign hard so your shock elimination theory does not happen!

Lastly, this goes to all the fanbases including my angels. Let’s all not fight. The contestants genuinely care for each other, so why are we fighting? If you don’t have a good thing to say, then don’t say anything.

My personal belief is that everybody has the right to express their opinions either pro or con; express their concerns, anxieties, worries, observations, complaints, etc. Rickey has every right to do this also or maybe more so because he owns this site. Moreover, he’s just acting as the
messenger. I don’t think he abandoned DA. Let us not judge Rickey badly for posting this news. We must remember that bad news is better than no news at all. We can act to solve the problem that the bad news bring. We are forced into inaction when there’s none.

I’d like to request everyone to sit back and relax even for a minute. We must realize that we have no control over the news, much less determine with certainty the authenticity of its message.

It has now become more imperative to give DA overwhelming number of votes so as not to leave any doubts he’ll be the winner. We must all focus our efforts to achieve this goal.

Rickey, my issue is the way the article was posted. It definitely could have been more supportive.

And a lot of people give weight to Naomi Judd, but why? From what I understand, the judges at AI were clueless, Chikezie was clueless, the little girl from star search had no idea about it, and those over at Complexity’s site (who apparently know David) deny it too. Given that information, I was a little put off in the way this post was presented by a proclaimed David A supporter.

I agree with the other DA supporters that the best way to handle it is to disregard it.

I don’t think this information will keep anyone from voting for David. If anything it will engender more sympathy for him and more appreciation for his professionalism under these circumstances.

Like somebody already pointed out, TPTB are pimping David Cook right now, so I would be surprised if anyone else wins.

But I’m sure David Archuleta will have an awesome career whether he’s the next American Idol or not. His voice is spectacular, and he has a huge fanbase.

And I never said anything about giving a professional diagnosis, although my training and own personal experience give me additional insight that others don’t have. Why do you think news programs (CNN, FOX News, etc.) constantly have lawyers, psychiatrists, and other highly trained professionals giving opinions on the mental state or legal ramifications of the latest celebrity fiasco? It’s because it’s legal, isn’t an ethical violation, and because there are a lot of people out there that are interested in what a professional has to say.

I am absolutely entitled to my opinion, and I’m not violating any ethics rules by posting my thoughts as a mental health professional and an abuse victim myself.

Ah! My inbox almost crashed from all the alerts! Remind me not to subscribe to a post run by the ArchAngels lol (this statement itself is testament to the strength of David’s fanbase)!

I’m sure Rickey was as uncomfortable with this interview as many of you feel. Is it not okay for him to be a little paranoid, a little overwrought? I think it’s awesome that Rickey posts his opinions so openly, including opinions that may not always be favourable. In the manner that we posters are free to voice our own thoughts, Rickey must be afforded the right to air his.

Also, as far as AI scandals go, this is the least personally damaging. It could stir up sympathy votes, it could stir up fan cohesion, or it could stir up absolutely nothing. But it does not detract from the talent that Little Archie possesses. Really, the only ones who look bad (to me) are the people, like Judd, who so quickly criticize someone they don’t know.

Happy thoughts, people! American Idol is supposed to be fun!

We all don’t come from perfect situations. My dear sister-in-law was accused of abuse by her doctor with her young sons, which was obsurd. Nothing came of that situation. I think we can see what we want to see and we all come from different backgrounds. I came from a verally abusive home, but I feel it made me a stronger person.
I think David is just fine. He loves his father for good or ill(whether or not the rumors are true). It’s evident that music is his mission, he loves it, he craves it.
People love to cast blame because it changes the focus to someone else. We can’t change David’s situation nor would I want to. His father is learning, we are all learning. Parenting is very hard. What could come accross as harsh, could be have taken out of context.

How do you know that she DIDN’T speak up five years ago on Star Search? Obviously the show did their best to contain the situation while David was on the show. But beyond that, their hands were tied.

It’s television not child protective services.
They most likely bided their time until David’s time ended so they could wash their hands of the situation.

Besides, psychological abuse is much harder to prove than physical abuse. Being an overbearing, controlling stage Dad is not nearly enough to get a child removed from a home. The most anyone can do is sit and watch the sad situation play out.

So now that a psychiatrist has diagnosed David, all the rumors are true. Thanks for pointing that out to me, I was so confused. LMAO
Could it be his personality issues are due to the fact that he just turned 17, is performing in front of 30 million people and hasn’t been around the block socially? Yes he was on SS but it seems that AI is a whole different ballpark. My personality is very similiar to David’s, so does that mean my parents were abusive? The answer is nobody really knows about David’s situation but him and his dad. I think it is extremly tacky for a practicing psychiatrist to give her assessment on a person that we barely see on tv.

As for putting DA fans down, yes there are a handful that I have felt deserve it at times (you are included in this category) because of the overall vicious nature of some of the posts. There is no agenda on my end….I just call it like I see it.

It wasn’t until later that night, when Jeff Archuleta started calling all night and harassing her in her room that Tiffany and her parents told producers. It became so intense that the producers of Star Search had a meeting and BANNED him from the lot.

Well…Tiffany Evans just recently told USmagazine.com, “I don’t recall being around his father at all, I’ve heard some things about him, but I was 10 years old, I didn’t really pay attention.” So now who will you believe, gossip websites or a 15 year old friend of David’s that was actually there when “the incident” happened.

I agree with Snuffles in Post #120. Ms. Judd’s comments were directed at Jeff Archuleta not David.In these posts, nobody is discussing how Ms. Judd said when she first saw little David years ago…”5 Stars. He is going to be huge.” Also, nobody is discussing the fact that Ms. Judd confirms Father Archuleta had to be put in a security box!!! One poster claimed that Ms. Judd is not the most stable person. Well, she was selected by the Star Search producers to be a Judge and went on to choose/vote for David to win!!! You can’t have it both ways. Naomi Judd was a part of a legendary country duo that was 50% her child . I think if anyone is qualified to make comments about parenting and the pressures of the entertainment industry it would be Mama Judd. I applaud her concern for David’s happiness!!!

Think happy thoughts people!

No matter how much we discuss and analyze this, no one really knows for sure the entire situation. And really discussing more of this really makes us fans upset (unless you are from the other camp and is secretly happy that this is happening…hope not though).

But one thing im sure of is that David Archuleta is a blessing. Whether he comes from perfect family or not, whether he is abused or not, I cannot deny the talent and the kind soul he possesses (you can go ahead and say that he is a fake and all, thats YOUR problem)

Thats all that matters to me. Shine on David!

I too was shocked that Rickey would embrace the “pedarest” perspective.

The thing I liked about this blog was the reasoned evaluations coupled with playful banter. In one swift stroke of tabloid trash, Rickey has killed the party.

Perhaps it was intentional. The post numbers were out of control. Maybe it was too hard to keep up with us “older” Archies. I just fear that in crashing our party, he also crashed David’s. Perhaps this was intentional too. I can hear a *virtual* giant sucking sound; it is the void that was once a tremendous rallying momentum to crown Archie the next Idol.

Please let me know where I can find you. I can’t beleive we are losing you right before ALW week. Too sad.

My first reaction to Rickey’s post was “IF this is true, my heart goes to DA.” Never in my mind would I expect the Angels to ask Rickey to stop posting about it. It just seems like a denial to me. My gut reaction says that many of you seem to be upset not because you really care about DA, but rather more concerned about your perception of DA and his so-called perfect life would be shattered reading any unhappy things about him.

True, it is sad that the media has to meddle with a teenager’s personal life. But why the need to block this out of Rickey’s site when it’s already out there? Would you guys rather have the non-DA fans talking about this behind your back?

heavy…your viciousness is in the passive-aggressive way in which you comment on other contestants, particularly DC. Continual postings about being a copycat, can’t sing anything other than rock, etc. (See the BJ week thread) Sure, you’ll offer a little compliment first, but then it’s followed with a dig.

As for the what kind of psychiatrist comment…. I’m a person who happens to be a mental health professional, not a psychiatrist that happens to also be a person. Can I not vent a little when I see or read things that pique my interest or get under my skin? Does my work preclude me from sharing my opinions on anything? Don’t forget that I first had a law degree and feel compelled to argue when I see poor logic.

Legolas #114 is how I feel in general. And I am a DA fan.

Rickey’s blog so he can post what, how and when. And I dont always agree with what he says. Good example was his comments on “Shout to the Lord” performance on IGB. So I assess and move on.

About DA, I dont know him or his family but I know I want him to succeed and be happy with what he will be doing sans AI. He is only 17 yo, a lifetime before him to chart his own mark.

Anyway… back to David Archuleta.

He is a VERY TOGETHER young man, it seems to me. Anyone who is an artist or has been a performer would know that it takes INCREDIBLE STRENGTH to do what he does week after week.

He forgot his lyrics ONCE and everyone went all up in arms about it.

As for him having an overbearing dad? If tru, BIG WOOPS! Don’t most of us all tough parents? Some might fall apart b/c , but others who are strong individuals can weather and also benefit from this toughness.

I, for one, DO NOT WORRY ABOUT ARCHIE.

Nobody’s life and upbringing is perfect.

And Archie is NOT a nervous wreck! He is an extremely confident young man, who is FULLY IN TOUCH with his artistry.

I don’t see where Ricky is ranting on and on. He’s giving his opinion. There are many more people on here that I would describe as ranting on and on and inflaming fans before I’d ascribe that to Ricky. I don’t find the story a big deal. Naomi loved David and think he’s super talented. And I agree and will vote hard for him like always.

This is Ricky’s blog and it’s always been a place of “active discussion”. Conspiracy theories are always apart of blogs and everyone has them. They do make for good conversation. The more opinions offered by people, the more interesting a blog is. I don’t think I’d visit if every sentence was “David A is the the greates thing in the world.”

I was surprised at how much space and support he was giving to Archie. Being a fan, I loved it. So like a reader above, I am shocked at the “spoiled brat” behavior of some people here. And what’s up with it must be a Cook fan to think that there’s a possbility that there may be some truth to the matter? Many, many people are fans of both. Many people vote for multiple idols. They are all fans. Any vote helps. If anything, Naomi probably bought David some sympathy votes. (although I’m sure he doesn’t want those like Cook doesn’t either regarding his brother but they both will get them)

I am even more motivated to vote hard for David. He’ll get even more votes for me with Kristy gone. I may give some idols a few votes here and there if they impress me. But I’m a happy fan! I also think Ricky was right to post this. I like a good debate and conversation. I also think there may be something to the story but I honestly don’t care.

Well I can safely say I have no dog in this race. I don’t care who wins this year.

With that said, I too have been worried about David’s mental health. He’s obviously very talented but (IN MY OPINION) he came off as disturbingly nervous, wound up and pressured BEFORE the competition even started.

Something always seems “off” about him. And I came to the conclusion early on that he’s been put on this “SUPER STARDOM OR BUST” treadmill at such an early age that it’s affected his personal growth.

This is what i called a “DEJAVU”.
Don’t worry Rickey, i’m truly on your side.

My country (confidential ehem..) had this IDOL competition for last few years. And for any loyal fan of Rickey’s fan, might realize me bebbling and smuggling, kept worrying about Archu had been bashing by some haters out there. This is because, the life process of Archu being now in Ameican Idol, is almost the same to the IDOL’s winner in my country…and i’m afraid the end of Archu life’s carrer will be like our IDOL’s fate…let’s see:

1. Our IDOL is an awkward and naive guy with a great voice when he is in the audition, surprisingly the judges love him because his voice is great, beyond his personality.

Sounds like Archu?

2. The only contestent who never talk back to the judges when it comes to comment time. Always look humble and awkward on stage.

Ring the bells?

3. The whole country (my country) like in a startruck, unbelievably dig and love him (our IDOL) which never been like that in our music history before which become the most greatest argument ever (for our IDOL music talent) between the fans and the professional musician and all blogers for years.

This is what we’re likely going through right?

4. Our IDOL is always be with her father along his journey in the competition and his father one of the most popular man in our industry news.

That’s sound familiar to me….

5. Several weeks before the finale, there had been a very very very wild speculation that the producer of the competition might kick out our IDOL from becoming a winner, for some unknown reason (in American Idol, it’s David Cook for the favourite, and in my country, there is the favourite person instead of our IDOL..that’s why they gushing about it). But some reporters arguing that how come they will kick a “gold” while it can create more money for the reality TV?

That make sense…

6. The bloggers make speculations. The IDOL fans get mad. Each other battling, arguing, smashing. Bloggers get annoyed for the fans (not with the IDOL), and it ends with bloggers didn’t care for the fans anymore.

Will it be? or Can it be?

7. Our IDOL has no fashion style idol.

8. Our IDOL always been teased in the competition (in a cute way).

9. The only guy who’s not in the bottom three.

10. Not getting the highest praise by all the media eventhough he did his best, this is because they have their another favourite (eg : David Cook).

11. Thousands and most fans wanted him to win, but others also want the another contestant to win, which they claimed that our IDOL is dull and boring.

12. Our IDOL only sing one dimensional way music (like Archu – ballads). But superb dimensional way

13. All people in our country claimed that only teenage, little kid and mothers in love with our IDOL (which in the end they revealed that it’s not true..)

14. Our IDOL is in the first stage is judges’ favourites, but it end that they were likely to dig the other contestant because our IDOL is one dimensional and not creative in his performance. Unlikely the other man, which week to week become more interesting. They mostly get bored but they didn’t show it obviously coz it might hurt many people who loved our IDOL. They can only show by incredibly supporting the other contestant.

That sums up for me (Paula said)…creepy same like Archu.

Do you guys want to know what happend to both of the contestants that they’d been arguing along the competition?

Our IDOL won…(in this case – Archu) with gazzillion votes from fans. The other got second. (eg : David Cook).

Well…the last based-on-true-story statement will not be reliable until it comes to AI finale.

SCARY STATEMENT and MEMORY for me : Our IDOL has a bad fate in our music industry. I can’t tell you guys because it’s quite horror. Still, our IDOL has billion fans, and he is the most succesfull male singer in our country currently but something happened to him which makes me so ‘dead’. I hope it will not happen to Archu though because i believe that Archu somehow…is truly genuine. Hope so.

Laugh, be supportive and good-hearted, thoughtful fun directed at wanting a wonderful, talented 17-year old to win something that I think he truly deserves. I believe DA deserves to be the American Idol and I am simply going to continue to Vote, Vote, Vote. He will have a great singing career no matter what (and I actually think that Simon Cowell has his back, silly as that may sound, win or lose). Nevertheless, this site is currently not particularly fun and less joyful and well-intentioned so I guess I will leave for a while. It was so much fun to be light-hearted (win or not, the bantering was great.) Think I’ll go take a break and listen to DA songs or watch The Davids support each other by sitting on the stage. THEY give me hope that these contestants can weather the mean-spirited press/money-grubbing hangers-on that are currently lurking about trying to do what they always do which is to grab anyone currently popular and drag them through the mud or humiliate them in someway in order to bask in the circle of their fame or make money off them. I think that The Davids on the stage show us that they have their own support group and will be there for each other regardless of who wins.

I am not saying that Naomi is starting a smear campaign, my point is this incident (or whatever it was) was HOW MANY years ago? It has absolutely no relevance to David’s current standing on AI, although the media is trying to make it so.

Everyone at AI has continued to state time and time again that David’s father has been nothing but nice and just a typical dad that it there to support his son.

If things went wrong on Star Search as stated, then maybe his dad has learned a lesson from that, people have regrets and they can change. Plus David is a young man now, not a child, and I think we under estimate David’s own mind and strengths. I personally do not think knowing David’s character that he is a bullied kid, or that he would stand by while his dad ’supposedly’ bullies others either.

Again I say this is just more garbage and it has no relevance to David’s current standing as a front runner on AI, only the media scrutiny of it does, but of course anything for a story…right?

What saddens me about this post is Rickey’s freak-out. Not only did he post the story but he added to it by reacting to it. What I wish he would’ve done is waited a bit,calmed down and then write something from that place rather than a panicked place. Wow! Everyone relax! Rickey can post what he wants and he has been very kind to David A fans.

It’s disheartening to see anything bad said about David because we love him so much. And, despite what ‘professionals’ say about why we are drawn to him, we love him so much because in this jaded, cynical, violent and depressing world, he absolutely radiates love, light, purity and hope. In a world where celebrities celebrate their depravity and we are fed a constant stream of garbage, he represents the hope that there truly is something better to ‘idolize’ and look up to.

And may I add, that in a world where we are brainwashed into believing whatever the media tells us, we need to be smart. The problem with gossip is that people state opinions, not facts, but everyone then assumes what they hear is true.

A few examples:

*IF Dad A was bad 5 years ago, that does not mean he is bad now – first wrong assumption. What are the facts? No one on the show right now or associated with David has said Dad has been bad. Also, the ‘harrassed’ girl in question has actually come out this week in full support of David and no recollection of his Dad. Must have really been traumatic!

*IF David seems frightened on stage that does not mean is Dad is a physical, emotional or verbal abuser – Second wrong assumption. Anyone who throws those words out there, ‘professional’ or otherwise, is irresponsible. Fact – David is a sensitive 17 year old boy, and takes Simon’s criticism’s to heart. He has no idea how popular he is and is nervous that he might be voted off every week. Where does the ‘afraid of Daddy’ come in? His Dad is in tears practically every week after David sings. COME ON!

*Naomi Judd is the authority we should believe on this subject – third wrong assumption. What about the girl in question? (see above) As far as it concerns David now, what about the current show celebrities and producers? (see above)

BTW, your comment is similar to many that I’ve heard from family members of murdered abuse victims that say they didn’t want to bring shame to the family by reporting it, or that it wasn’t their business, or they hoped it would eventually stop, etc.

I’m not saying with absolute certainty that he is being abused, but what I see leads me to believe that there is a great likelihood of it.

It seems like the people on here that are so adamant that there is no abuse think that this is being discussed by DA haters in some sort of attempt to remove him from the AI throne he has all but claimed. I’m surprised by the big response (and Rickey’s reaction, actually). Naomi Judd’s career is in the dumper and David Archuleta is in the public eye. I think she’s a petty gossip who’s dropping names to get attention. The judges and contestants were completely separated on Star Search (many people who worked on the show have so stated). She probably never saw anything. I think her statements on the Today Show mean absolutely nothing, and should reflect badly on her and no one else. She’s a busybody! (I’ve never used that term before, but if you look it up in the dictionary, Naomi Judd’s picture should be there.)

And I hate that so many people are swallowing her crap.

If I may bring another perspective on the heels of uktwirl’s post #199: the number of posters on this blog who insist that abuse is not happening because the family seems so nice, close friends say it didn’t happen, etc. is truly frightening. Are people seriously this naive? Forget about DA for a moment. What about the kids you know personally? Is it outside the realm of possibility that some of the “nice people” you know could be abusing their kids? Physically, sexually, or psychologically? If so, you’re part of the problem.

I’m not saying abuse is or is not the case with DA. Like you, I don’t know. I’m just saying please open your minds to the possibility that, DA aside, abused children and their abusers are highly practiced at hiding the abuse. Often they don’t even see the behavior as abuse; to them, it’s normal. Both the abused and their abusers are so used to presenting another face to outsiders that it becomes a way of life. Please, if this is news to you, read up on it, open your mind, and open your eyes. Maybe even get some counseling. People who deny abuse for the reasons given here are often past victims of abuse themselves.

I think exposing Jeff Archuleta now is better for David in the long run.

David is easily my favorite singer in the competition but watching him makes me uncomfortable. I completely agree with snuffles, everything he does comes off as extremely controlled and awkward and in turn it makes me feel similarly. I have to wonder if we actually know the real-real David–or if this is just some elaborate script set up by his father.
Compare David’s run on AI to a beauty pagent and there are some really odd similarities.
For example, not only does he choose ‘appropriate’ songs with ‘change the world’ messages, but his answers to why he sings them are completely equatable to the typical “If you had one wish what would you wish for?” – “World peace” deal.

I feel really bad for David. He is being turned into this beauty pagent robot–talented and likable with a permanent smile, but also fake, forced, and emotionally abused.
I can sense him really holding back his true self… I wish he could just break out of the mold.

And this is when I actually know the child and the parent. I have learned for my own situation that I am irresponsible when I jump to conclusions. That’s all. I mean no ill will. dickie, I think the ackwardness you see in David is just being a teenager. I remember being a very shy kid in high school and it wasn’t until my Senior year did I start to grow out of it and that was after being a cheerleader and being out in front of people. hey, I actually think this is an interesting topic. I have no problem recognizing where there is abuse. It is vital to correcting injusices in this world.
The problem I have is that there is no evidence only hersay. David seems to be a smart kid, he is involved with a loving community that seems to support and love him. Why is anybody leaving? Why such negativity? Rickey isn’t perfect. It’s a stretch to say he is secretly trying to undermine David Archuleta’s endeavors. Taking ALL things into account (as one should to get the proper perspective), follow it back to the roots and you’ll find that Rickey is just giving his honest opinion (what more can you ask) and is trying his best to inform his visitors of what he thinks (it is his blog, afterall) about what’s in the news pertaining to all things AI and DA.

If you’re someone of any integrity, don’t get blown away with the wind by this. If you don’t agree, hey, let’s not torch the guy. Have some understanding. Forgive (if you believe he needs to be forgiven for whatever reason) and move on.

Why be so whimsical and vulnerable? Don’t let one post ruin your whole time here. This is supposed to be a hobby, a light-hearted passtime. This is a great place to carry on and have a good ol’ time. Just take a chill pill and enjoy the show and the community.

All along, I truly must admit that I’ve really noticed that “off” look in his eyes. His whole tone and aura, per se. I’m a victim of an overbearing father myself, and I know all the things that go with it. I’m not saying I believe he’s abused (I have no proof at all), but I do think there is possibly somewhere inside of him a small amount of insecurity (or large) that is tinging his overtone.

It can be stuffed down and hidden away, but I believe the evidence of it has to be shown in some form. I believe the father is the most important figure in a child’s life, what he does has a very direct connection and effect on the son especially.

Just my two cents, but I’ll pray for ‘em, s’best I can do.

Wow – just wow! I can’t believe that so many of you deem yourselves judge, jury and executioner of Jeff Archuleta based on hearsay. You’re treading on very dangerous territory. THIS is what is going to bring David down. I fear his shot at the title has now been overshadowed by all this ridiculousness.

As for Rickey, I’m not quite sure what it is he’s done wrong here. Personally, I’m a facts person. I want all the information (good and bad) at my fingertips before I make an informed decision and start throwing around damaging allegations. I have no doubt Jeff is a strict disciplinarian, but to finger him as an abuser! without evidence! is really crossing the line. You might ask how I’m so sure he isn’t, but I’d ask you in return what makes you so sure he is.

My sister is in TV production and worked on Idol Gives Back. She said that the regular crew of Idol specifically told her about Jeff A and what a horrible stage dad he was. She doesn’t even watch the show, so she’s got no axe to grind. So, I think this is probably true.

Poor little guy. I hope he does well in life and can get past this.

A couple of other tid-bits from my sis. Ryan’s a nice guy, a real pro. Taylor was a b*tch and the whole crew was rooting for him to lose solely based on his attitude. No other stand-outs, so the rest of the kids must have been alright. The food they provide is not as good as the “Dancing with the Stars” producers, so the Idol people try to sneak down there on occasion (same building).

I’m a big fan of David’s and had just gotten used to coming here to read and comment about this incredibly talented, sweet, cute young guy. I like the kid, I’m in my 50s, and that makes me a pervert? What?! That’s an incredible leap, if you ask me.

All the comments were harmless and made in good fun. I am as straight as they come. I am a temple-recommend-holding Mormon. If there was vulgarity, lewdness or a lack of taste in the comments here, I would not have hung around for a second, much less have returned for more.

Throwing buckets of cold water over a little gushing and good-hearted admiration for David A. was uncalled for, in my opinion.

I guess I’ll go back in the closet. I don’t have anyone I can talk to around here about David and his journey to the Idol win. Getting to know and visit with others like myself who are big admirers of his was really fun. I don’t understand why we were slapped up-side the head for it. Should I have expected it?

It has become ridiculous. It has become difficult to trust.

The web is a big world. I relate it to yesteryear’s eggings and toilet paper decorations on trees. I suppose maliciousness just feeds some people. I have never been on an Idol fansite before this year — never cared that much. Maybe such things are common. I don’t know.

First off, what is so passive-aggressive about me telling Hester to “shut it” w/ the family sexual or otherwise abuse talk in this thread? I was pretty straightforward with my thought whether I was incorrect or not.

Secondly, I still stand by what I said. I know Hester didn’t say that abuse was involved w/ the Archuleta family. But no one here has claimed to do what she was saying which is:

“I’m just saying please open your minds to the possibility that, DA aside, abused children and their abusers are highly practiced at hiding the abuse. Often they don’t even see the behavior as abuse; to them, it’s normal.”

And I told her to bring that *real* topic to where it matters, not in a David Archuleta’s gossip thread about his dad being overbearing. What does abused children’s secret got to do anything w/ David?

Even if she’s repeating that this might not have anything do with DA, I just find her discussion IRRELEVANT and potentially provocative. Intentionally or not, she is inviting thoughts and flaming more speculation on DA and his dad.

I meant to say, the original site was not reliable. Sources were unnamed. Tiffany herself has refuted the idea that she was confronted by JA. Some are speculating that they see ’signs’ of abuse, but no one who really knows David suggests anything of the sort.

I’m not saying that there’s no truth to the rumors whatsoever. I’m saying that we don’t know and we need to stop underestimating the power of Internet news. If you have any positive thoughts about David Archuleta, whether you area fan or not, you need to drop the subject.

I’m still mystified today about why the mass exodus. Everybody got upset because the person who runs this blog had the nerve to post news that’s all over the internet and then state his opinion?

I’ve never understood why people refuse to accept that others have an opinion that might be different from their own. I agree with those who have said that this is a blog site and not a David Archuleta fansite. ALL views need to be welcomed and respected though not necessarily agreed with.

As much as I love and support David, I’m not so naive as to think his life is without its challenges as many other families. So his parents discipline him? It’s only shocking because its unheard of in today’s society. You can’t even scold a child anymore without the word “abuse” being thrown around. Hence why kids are now running the household. I have no concerns for David whatsoever. He seems like a pretty sweet, well mannered, well adjusted 17 year old kid to me.

My greater concern is that if Naomi was so uneasy and distressed about his well being 5 YEARS AGO, why has she waited until now to speak up? Obviously she turned the other cheek. It’s highly suspicious to me that people are coming out of the woodwork circulating these stories now that David has taken America by storm and his family is under a gag order and unable to defend itself.

I do get your point, KH, but I read a number of attacks on Rickey. People questioned his support of David and his judgement for making the post in the first place. I never got the impression he wasn’t still 100% behind David.

As for losing the fun here, I’ve always believed that it’s the people who make the blog a success. Those same people who jumped ship have taken their anger to another board where things will move happily along for awhile until another controversial topic arises or someone expresses a different opinion and they feel attacked and another exodus occurs. It has nothing to do with Rickey’s blog, per se. I liken it to people acting like spoiled children and moving from sandbox to sandbox when someone dares to express an opposing opinion. I’ve belonged to several different message boards/blogs and I’ve yet to come across one where life was grand 100% of the time. It is what it is and you get past it and move on. You don’t up and retreat.

Heck, I love David, but are we that naive to presume he doesn’t have flaws like the rest of us? I think even he’d attest to that. This pedestal he’s been put on his surely to tip at some point.

It’s not wise to generalize a group of people, regardless of what they do or don’t do together, or separately.

My personal opinion is that Rickey likes to stir up controversies. Posting blogs that are provocative, such as “Blake Being a Bully” or “Carly is Pregnant”… Most often, it’s tongue-in-cheek, and maybe sometimes out of his own hysteria.

And this works a lot of the times, driving people to the site to talk endlessly about what ultimately is pointless (as he himself pointed out).

And sometimes it just backfires. Like this Naomi Judd paranoia post of his. For one reason or another, people feel very protective of DA and they just get sick of this stupid story being brought up again. That’s the way it is. You take the goods with the bads.

I’d just like to give some food for thought to the few of you that are questioning why Naomi Judd didn’t report this 5 years ago. Has it crossed your mind that maybe she did? She may have called child protective services (BTW, it extremely difficult to get a child removed from their home), she may have talked with police, she may have expressed her concern to numerous people. Maybe you just haven’t heard about it because DA has been out of the spotlight until now. If I talked about Bobby Joe Morgan from Hog Wallow Kentucky being the victim of an abusive stage dad (totally fictional person from a place I don’t even know exists) do you think it would get any media attention? No, because Bobby Joe isn’t famous now. Would the media even ask me about Bobby Joe’s dad? No, because neither Bobby Joe nor his dad are in the public spotlight. DA has been out of the spotlight for 5 years, and there are quite a few people that had never heard of him until this year. A lot of people didn’t even realize that he had been on StarSearch. So why would the media be reporting about a pushy or potentially abusive stage dad of someone so obscure?? (No, I’m not saying that DA is obscure now, but over the past 5 years he hasn’t been a story, he’s just been another kid living in relative obscurity.)

There is also the possibility that Naomi Judd has grown as a person and has, after careful consideration over the past several years, realized that DA’s dad’s behavior was not acceptable.

Or it could be, as is often the case, people who witness abuse don’t say anything about it for a long time (if ever) because they feel like they can’t make a difference, they don’t want to get involved, they don’t want to embarrass anyone, they aren’t sure if what they are seeing really is something that could be considered abuse, etc.

I’m not saying that Naomi Judd didn’t say this as a self-serving marketing ploy, I’m just saying that there is also just as likely a chance that she may have been talking about this to others for years and this is just the first time that you, or anyone else for that matter, has heard about it.

I do feel confident in saying, though, that I seriously doubt that she would say this on national television if it wasn’t true and verifiable by others. She is a very smart businesswoman, and there’s no way she would put herself in a position to be on the receiving end of a slander lawsuit by DA’s dad.

To answer your question, people that have no training in how to read body language would interpret his body language as smug, etc. To the trained eye, however, that is not the case. Notice how he always shoves his hands in his pocket or crosses one (sometimes both) arms across his chest, particularly when waiting to hear the judges comments. Notice how he often uses his hands to cover his face. These are “defensive” actions people use to shield themselves, to create a barrier, and to close themselves off from something unpleasant or frightening that they expect will occur. Given the frequency of these actions from DC, and the context in which we see them, I would say that he was probably teased/picked on quite a bit as a child. He has developed these responses as a way to protect himself from verbal and/or physical assaults that he expects to happen. This sort of “closed” body language is often misinterpreted as arrogance, cockiness, smugness, etc.

The video footage in the beginning of the season showed him segregating himself from others (remember the word nerd segment) as did a lot of the pictures (notice how he is almost always in the back or off to the side, with more space in between him and the rest of the group). This type of self-segrating behavior, like prefering to engage in activities that offer little/no chance for interaction with others (i.e. crossword puzzles) is often seen in individuals that are afraid they will be hurt, teased, attacked, etc. (Please note that I am NOT saying that everyone that enjoys crosswords is afraid or has been picked on, just saying that in the context of all of the other clues we have about DC, this is the most likely case) Now, he is seen giving other contestants hugs (see this week’s results show when he sat down next to DA and put his arm around him). He is starting to let his guard down around the other contestants as he learns to trust them and as they are getting to know him. He’s not completely there yet with the trust thing, though. Notice how when he did put his arm around DA that there were several inches space between the two of them as they sat on the stage….that space serves as a protective barrier (probably to protect himself from the verbal assault he may expect from the few psychotic DA fans that will claim he was trying to steal DA’s thunder, cash in on DA’s popularity, etc. LOL)

I’d be willing to bet that most people here have at least one friend that, when they first met them, they didn’t like because they came across as arrogant, etc. based on their body language and standoffishness. Only after taking time to get to know this person, and after the person let their guard down, was it realized that they had grossly misjudged the individual as being smug/arrogant when in fact, they were just very guarded. I think that in the future, as DC becomes more comfortable with himself and with others, the “smugness” that some people see now may start to dissipate. In the same vein, as others start getting to know more about DC, they will realize that he isn’t smug and that they have judged him incorrectly.

Lastly, I want to thank you, SuzziQ, for giving me the opportunity to address the snarky comments about DC’s personality that I keep reading on here (even if your request was pure snarkiness to begin with). I’ve wanted to defend him for a long time, but haven’t because I wasn’t sure that it would matter to anyone. Your request was something I just couldn’t let pass without a response.

It boggles my mind that you continue to miss the point of Hester’s post. I find it highly unlikely that David is a victim of any serious abuse, and I doubt it would affect his fanbase or AI results either way. Regardless abuse is a serious problem (as you acknowledged), and considering this blog just got 12 million hits, why wouldn’t she take the opportunity to raise awareness?

Do I think it makes a difference? Absolutely, seeing as how it was one of the more intelligent comments on here. The flaw in your argument is that you assume there are only two types of people: DA fans vs. haters. I know it may be hard for you to fathom, but some of the readers really don’t have an opinion about David or Jeff Archuleta. I’m one of them– and I know there are many other posters who visit this site in spite of the Archuleta-mania. So maybe you’re too wrapped up in Archuleta-land to glean anything useful from of non-Archuleta related comments, but don’t be so presumptuous as to speak for everyone else. You never know when a random comment may or may not strike a chord.

Finally, you insult Rickey by saying this site is devoted to salacious and trivial entertainment gossip. Obviously the man is one of the best entertainment bloggers out there, but there have been some very substantial discussions concerning politics, sexuality, evolution, religion, etc. I can appreciate that some people tend to look to TV for escapism, so I understand if those topics might seem a little heavy. On the other hand, there might be people like me who look for discourse in any venue, whether it’s in a blog, a newspaper editorial, or a classroom. The simple solution would be to read the posts and threads which interest you, ignore the ones you find irrelevant, and let the rest of us decide for ourselves.

I agree with you that people feel protective of DA – I get that – but he has a loving family to take care of him. We don’t need to get THAT involved. All we need to do is mind our own business, enjoy his music and support him in pursuing HIS dreams. I found your post about DCook fascinating to read. He has always come off as someone who hasn’t always been completely comfortable with himself to me. In his video before he sang “Innocent”, the way he said something about “being comfortable in your own skin in this world” gave me that impression. I thought maybe he has struggled with a lack of confidence at times and this is why I find so much joy in watching him transform into this show-stopping performer on stage. I never understood why people saw him as arrogant, smug, etc. but I guess I can see how some of his gestures and defense mechanisms may come off as distant or cold. I really appreciate your opinion!

While Hester repeatedly said that she doesn’t know anything about DA and not applying any of this to DA, she tried to correct people of something they never did to begin with. And that is falsely assuming happy appearing children as being non-victim of abuse.

We were only talking about a possibility of a strict and overprotective Dad. Not an abusive predator. Jeff Archuleta has not been accused of that. YET. The two situations are NIGHT and DAY different. To casually bring up a latter scenario, Hester, intentionally or not, were linking a sinister deception with the Archuletas.

I don’t remember anyone who said that an abuse child can’t act happy. We were only talking about David Archuleta and his Dad.

Not sure why Hester felt it was her duty to do a public service on making a point about child abuse. It is offensive b/c people reading superficially can easily make that link between child abuse and DA.

I spoke out against the existence of her post. It’s nothing personal against her or her character, but objections to the post itself.

You might not care about DA and Jeff and the lies and exaggerations and misunderstandings that are being spread, but I DO!

How?

I was calling a spade a spade. Rickey.org is an entertainment blog that talk about the pop culture and general gossips. Where did Angelina and Brad bring their children today? Did Blake hide Sanjaya in the closet? Etc.

I have no judgment of what Rickey does. If I do, I’d be a big hypocrite because I am here. Obviously there’s some part of it I enjoy. But it is what it is.

Yes, sometimes serious convos come out of some of the topics. And that’s great (or not). I have no problems with seriousness.

But I do care about understanding of the repercussions of what you post in a public forum.

I’m totally with you. People (ala Rickey) sometimes invest too much on the artists’ personal lives. And both camps, the detractors (who critically psychoanalyze DA’s every move) and the fans (who worry and feel protective), are guilty of this.

You can spiritually learn so much about an artist’s soul by just observing his artistry. And that should be more than enough.

Purely in the interests of science, if you have time, do you mind lending your expertise on the enigma that is Jason Castro? I am infatuated with this guy– his many facial expressions, his spacey stares, his non sequitur ramblings. I just have no idea how to interpret them. It’s obvious that he marches to his own drumbeat, but beyond that, I have no clue. Any insight you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

And if your unofficial prognosis is that he’s just a little weird, all the better. The quirkiness is endearing.

There is a HUGE difference between encouraging and supporting a child and forcing, abusing, threatening, etc. These rumors and comments by ill intentioned people are just that, rumors spread by evil people who seem to feel that when other people do well, they lose, so they feel they need to try and tear down people, even when they may have no knowledge and are just repeating other rumors they have heard. There are a lot of people like that in the world – those that feel to make themselves feel better, they have to tear someone else down. That is what the devil does. God does not do that. God builds people up and looks for opportunities to praise and compliment others. It is a sign of weakness when someone attacks someone else’s character, even more so when they have no possible way of knowing if something is true or not.

Case in point – How can Naomi Judd make a credible comment about David’s dad and his behavior on Idol when it has been over 5 years since they were distantly associated on a similar but completely different show?

I know for a fact that David and his dad never even met Naomi Judd when they were there at Star Search. The only contact they had with her was when she was on stage making comments, similar to ow the AI judges are now although I believe the judges on Idol have had more opportunities for contact with the contestants because they are no longer voting and the numbers are getting smaller and smaller. It isn’t like the contestants and the judges hang out or anything, although Idol is much more social than Star Search and you can see them at the live shows talking to each other during the commercials and after the shows.

During Star Search, the judges were not allowed to converse with any of the contestants. They were kept in a totally different area in private trailers while the contestants were in a completely different area on the lot. Also, the judges were only there briefly before, during and after the show. They didn’t even know the families other than through “3rd hand” accounts or through “gossip” they might have received from other people or possibly from some “I’m almost unemployed” former Star Search staff member who were probably quite worried about what they would be doing once the show was over. Everyone knew it was a very short-lived show and would be over soon. So what sense does it make for Naomi Judd to make a statement about David Archuleta’s dad whom she never even met? Then to act as though she is qualified to know what’s going on now and to profess this concern for poor David and to say on a nationally televised show to “leave him alone”. Alone from what? What could Naomi Judd know about David and his dad and how they are getting along with each other while they are on Idol? Absolutely nothing!!!
Unless, as it appears by her comments, that she knows what she knows by reading it or hearing it from some tabloid gossip source.

Do you realize there were only 2 sources that originally started this whole rumor about David’s dad? Only 2 articles that came up with these stories and that every other report and story was an exaggeration or misinterpreted twist of these other 2 stories? Nothing new has come up to my knowledge until Naomi Judd, who I hope I have just shown has very little credibility concerning David or his dad. It is absolutely absurd to really give this any credibility.

Please, everyone on this thread, try and help combat this garbage by helping correct this situation if you see other people feeling down and believing this untruth. You can help people change their thought process if they might be doubting David and his family. Let them know that they need to help put an end to this “rubbish” and focus on what needs to happen so that David can feel positive light and truth coming from the fans and friends who care about him. Evil is trying to destroy the good that David is capable of sharing with the world through his person and in tandem with his wonderful musical talent. Don’t you see what is going on? Darkness is trying to stop all this light and goodness from rolling forth. Let’s not let it happen!! Let’s start by believing in David and his family. His dad is a great guy, he has sacrificed a lot to enable David to share his talent with all of us. He has been his most dedicated and loyal fan and has helped him more than anyone else to arrive at where he is today. David relies on his dad a lot and could not do what he is doing without his support. His dad is a professional musician and knows a lot about how to help David with his song choices, arrangements and such and knows more about Idol and how it works than about anyone on this planet. He doesn’t tell David what to do, but he does counsel him and gives him advice. Let’s make sure we give David and his dad our support!!! Let’s give them that, they deserve it!! Let’s help get rid of all this tabloid garbage BS and instead, let’s look at David’s eyes and his dad’s eyes. Look at the love, admiration and support they have for each other. When I see his dad, I do not see an overbearing, mean domineering person. I hope you can see what is really going on and will join me in transferring all the negative energy and turning it into positive energy for David FTW!!!

Thanks, Malafly, for bringing that post over. It was a very enlightening read. It’s a shame, really, that a family member has had to speak to any of this.

I may be in the minority, but I feel really uncomfortable with the way this story is dominating. I just don’t know that it’s our business to be delving so deep into the private business of this family….making analysis, giving opinions, publically incriminating his father. We KNOW nothing…zero…zipp…nill. I’d much prefer if I didn’t know anything about David’s personal life and could just sit back, relax and enjoy the wonder that he is. The rest just takes away and is already hurting him and his family and that’s heartbreaking to me. Does that makes sense?

I’ve never posted a comment to a blog before but I find so much of this discussion so repulsive that I could no longer keep quiet.

My family enjoys American Idol, and we have fun debating the merits of the performers and having our favorites. A couple of years ago I found this site and visit here regularly during the season. First I want to say that I totally support Rickey’s in reporting on whatever he chooses, and to make whatever comments he likes.

What has really raised my ire is the audacity of some people–even people claiming to be mental health professionals–to make diagnoses and formulate conclusions about family dynamics with absolutely no first-hand knowledge whatsoever. In one fell swoop, the discussion here has gone from a repeated rumor about a parent possibly being overzealous in their promotion of a child’s career to a public lynching for child abuse. You may think that all this wild and irresponsible talk is harmless, but there are a lot of fans out there–young, impressionable people–who will not know how to tell the difference between speculation and reporting. You are contributing to hurtful and potentially damaging misinformation.

I am not going to explain my work or my background because in an anonymous environment, credentials are dubious at best and anyone who uses them to justify their opinions is in my view highly suspect. This person who claims to be a psychiatrist is either a complete phony or, if they are in fact a professional, should seriously consider discussing their motivations for participating here with their own therapist.

They claim that professionals are used frequently in the media to provide insight and opinion. I want people to know that while it is not unheard of in serious cases that involve obvious psychological aspects such as hostage situations, professional psychiatric perspective–especially on entertainment personalities–is exceedingly rare, and never deployed by responsible news organizations based on rumors. It just doesn’t happen.

The main thing I want people know is that EVERYTHING being discussed on this topic is OPINION, no more or less valid than your own.

Hey Idolfamily…just wanted to point out that I never stated anything about my opinion being a hard and fast fact, just that I would bet money that my personal assessment is correct and the reasoning behind why I feel that way. The only thing that I am contributing is additional information to enable others to think critically about what they see or hear.

As for the news outlets…they do frequently employ professionals for analysis. Do you not remember Britney Spears’ being in the media (CNN, etc) for the first several months of the year and the numerous psych professionals talking about her state of mind, parenting skills, etc.? Same thing for Heath Ledger, Anna Nicole Smith, OJ Simpson, River Phoenix, Tonya Harding, Herschel Walker, etc.

Evaluating celebs based on the available information is one of the ways that I keep myself sharp and practiced for when I’m called to do things like juror analysis, forensic psychiatry, etc.

Furthermore, I frequently use posts from sites like this to illustrate points and create discussion during the psych course I teach at the local university. Posting and watching the squalor and mayhem that ensues as outraged uber-fans respond to squash any viewpoint that is different from their own is a fascinating study in mental health in and of itself.

Your ethical transgression in this regard is that you failed in every case to caveat your comments by making clear that you have not had occasion to make a direct assessment of the parties involved and that your comments are not to be construed as authoritative.

The celebrities you mention were the subject of third-party psychological evaluation for the purposes of news and comment because they were all either DEAD or INDICTED FOR CRIMINAL ACTIVITY. No such thing is the case here. these are RUMORS.

Your vociferous defense of what is at best highly questionable behavior for an alleged professional is also a “fascinating study in mental health in and of itself.”

IdolFamily (you sound so much like heavy, are you the same person?)…I seriously doubt anyone would take my comments as an “official” diagnosis, nevertheless that was the reason for the comments included within my post that “I see” (not that I have diagnosed, administered tests, etc.), and the verbage “most likely” (note that I didn’t say conclusively, certainly, without a doubt, etc). An individual would be hard pressed to even entertain the idea that I have had a chance to conduct a complete clinical assessment with DA or his dad, since privacy laws have been in place for quite some time and became even more stringent with the enacting of HIPAA regulations (meaning I would be ethically bound to refrain from discussing the situation had I actually treated DA or his dad).

Since I practiced law for several years prior to going to med school, I know with absolute certainty that I have not committed any legal or ethical violations here. Just because you don’t agree with standard accepted medical ethics does not mean my posting here is highly questionable behavior.

Perhaps I could have chosen a better list of people to illustrate my point about the news media, but there was at least one there (Britney Spears) that is neither dead nor has been indicted for criminal activity. But since you refuse to see reason, here are some more that were discussed on respectable news outlets for you: Vanessa & Kobe Bryant (why men cheat, and why women stay with cheaters), Monica Lewinsky & Bill Clinton (why women chase married men, why men cheat), Jamie Lynn Spears (is she mentally prepared for motherhood, why would a teen with everything find herself pregnant), etc. No dead people here, no indictments for criminal activities.

As far as rumors go, I bet that if I had said that I don’t believe them based on DA’s body language you wouldn’t have a problem. I also bet that if I had credentialed myself prior to saying something along those lines you (and a lot of others) would use my opinion as a battle cry to prove your theory that there is no merit to the idea of DA’s father being the stage dad from hell.

Let me ask you this: Why do you care so much what I think? Do you think that my opinion will lead to a reduction of votes for DA? Do you think that the outcome of AI Season 7 will be changed based on how people perceive DA’s dad? Do you honestly think that someone here will read this and say “Well, I didn’t think he was a stage dad, but since the doctor thinks there is a great likelihood then it must be so?”

The point of this blog, and any other for that matter, is the sharing of information, ideas, and opinions. I value the information that I am able to gather from sources that are more knowledgable than I am about certain things, which is why I frequently ask questions to patients on medical boards regarding their experiences with certain medications. I want to hear from people that have real-world experience with a certain drug before I prescribe it for my own patients, and I don’t want to rely solely on the heavily biased clinical studies that pharmaceutical companies produce. People on Rickey’s boards seem to be more intelligent (for the most part) than those on a lot of other sites, and I would think that they would value (or at least be interested in) the thoughts and ideas of those that have extensive training or are more knowledgable about certain topics than they are. What is so wrong with opening your mind to possibilities that you hadn’t previously considered? What is so wrong with sharing your expertise or significant experience about something? NOTHING!!!!

In any event, the similarity between the posts has less to do with similar opinions, and more to do with the fact that the writing styles/vocabulary are eerily alike compared to other posts you have written. The logic (if you can call it that) is strikingly similar between the posts. Also, the fact that you just can’t shut up and have to have the last word (see every thread where someone has a different point of view from yours, and you feel compelled to keep dragging disagreements out for extended periods until finally the other poster realizes the type of person they are dealing with and just stops responding). Perhaps even more telling is the fact that I asked this other poster a question, and YOU were the one that responded….

BTW…there is no such thing as a psychiatry degree. You get a medical degree (mine is from UVA) and then specialize in psychiatry. I sure hope you don’t count yourself as an “intelligent poster.”

Argument, not discussion, is what you get with this type poster. Discussion involves considering another point of view. That’s quite different from being argumentative, which ultimately shuts down communication.
