That was brilliant, although might I say, a complete 180 degrees in terms of mood from Mariah’s version. hers is perky and light, and his was a bit heavy and dark. hehe or maybe it was just me, coz i love the orig so much. haha!

That was an absolutely STUNNING performance. I LOOOOVE those long powernotes he does! Gahhhhh!! *runs in circles*

And yes, yes, yes…he just keeps getting hotter!

And while he didn’t have his guitar tonight, it was still a very hot performance!

And and and…I noticed his tears before Ryan said anything. I was like “OMG! He’s crying!” and then Ryan noticed it a few moments later. I so wanted to wrap his arms around him and give him a huge hug!

Randy was right, he is ready to make is own album. I will be buying this on itunes. I already have all of his other songs contanstly playing. He is just so great at picking the songs that are good for him and being able to change the songs to suit is style. He really does not need this competition (although I do not want him to leave!) to make it anymore. I predict that he will be bigger than Daugherty. He is more unique.

My first time posting on rickey (although I happen to be in the top 10 in one of the office pools!).

“Always Be My Baby” happens to be the only MC song I actually like, and DC my favorite AI contestant. I figured it would be too much to hope for the two to combine, so I couldn’t believe it when I heard Ryan say it!

DC blew it out of the water. I’ve always felt like the lyrics to that song were much deeper, and emotional than the MC version allowed for (much like the MJ version of Billie Jean), and DC really ‘got’ them. I’ll be buying this on iTunes ASAP!! DC for the win!!!

OMG! David Cook was absolutely brilliant tonight!! A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! I cried when he cried! We all knew it would be an emotional night for our Cookie since his brother Adam was in the audience… but to top this off with such a tremendous performance is beyond wonderful! My heart melted when he got teary.

Congrats on your first post!! I couldn’t agree more about the deep meaning behind one of the poppiest sounding songs in musical history. Really emotional performance. Heartfelt, raw, genuine — it’s hard to string words together.

I’m so pathetic, I started crying (again) re-watching the video. I’m going to have to resort to just listening to the mp3 if I’m gonna start bawling every time I see the video.

Anyone else notice that he changed the lyrics at around 2:17 to “You will linger on”?

Obviously, the implications behind this song and his brother are haunting. Not to be a total buzzkill, but I don’t think I was overanalyzing. His emotional reaction was too visceral for it to be a coincidence. When you listen to the lyrics again, taking away all the gratuitous “baby” and “girl” moments, it can be interpreted as really sad song about platonic love. I’ve got a lump in my throat just thinking about it.

Okay, I didn’t get to fully enjoy this performance, because my dad was blathering on during it. LOL BUT I’m loving the audio/video as I rewatch/listen. Yea, Cookie!! DC Ryce: I totally agree. Hate to be terribly maudlin, but I was in the hospital for an extended period in high school, during which this song was a #1 radio hit, and it completely has that same meaning for me: the idea of living on through small memories.

Also, I’m so glad that they did NOT reference his brother in the audience, and go for the “sympathy vote”. It would have given far too much ammunition to DC’s detractors! And, was DC’s brother sitting next to Teri “Before He Cheats” Hatcher????

I just have to join in and say this performance was awesome. I haven’t rewinded my DVR over & over this much in what seems like forever. It was powerful, chilling, and beautiful all at the same time. David Cook is it for me. And I never thought I’d say this in MILLION years, but I think he may just surpass Chris Daughtry in my affections of an Idol contestant. Plus, after downloading all of his iTunes mp3 and his album on Amazon I’m just freaking hooked on the guy. And the people on Daughtry’s official website are all behind David Cook too. The man is just great.

I agree – this is another Billie Jean moment, the thing that makes it even better? David doesn’t have to share the glory regarding the arrangement with anyone.

My Dad passed away from cancer less than 2 years ago so anyone fighting that ugly disease is tremendously brave and courageous in my book. I kinda get what David and his family must be going through. One time after my Dad had been in the hospital for 2 weeks he was able to go to my brother’s basketball game. My brother set the school record for assists in one game that night – it was pretty emotional for everyone. I’m sure David was also wanting to do his best b/c his brother was there. Sorry to blather on about my personal stuff, but the situation really touches me on a personal level. I pray for the Cooks whenever they cross my mind.

I am totally buying this when it’s available on itunes. I can’t help but keep listening to it, and every time he sings “You’ll always be a part of me” I always start to tear up. Man I’m tearing up right now just thinking about it lol.

Just everything about this performance was amazing. The arrangement was just genius. I loved it when the violins came in and for once, the backup singers sounded fantastic and didn’t overshadow the main singer’s performance but enhanced it like they’re supposed to do.

Yeah, I just think it’s a little weird that they sat Teri Hatcher next to DC’s brother. A little too much attention focused on the poor cancer guy. I just really want to make sure DC doesn’t get accused of playing the sympathy vote at all (it was actually even mentioned on perezhilton.com earlier today), but wins entirely on his own merits and talent, of which there are plenty! I can just see the VFTW crew calling out DC on it too. The story is touching, and I really feel for DC, but the focus should be on the performance.

Very, very good. Not his best..that is reserved for Billie Jean, but it is clear he and DA are the frontrunners and will be in the final showdown. I happen to like DC’s voice more than Daughtry’s. I never liked his falsetto, and DC is still finding out what he can do vocally, in my opinion. He will only get better with time. He is absolutely amazing!!

I’ve never been nervous about David Cook putting out the best performance out of all the contestants not to mention he is all around the best everything. Voice, looks, performing talent. He is brillant. I can’t say he will win the competition, because things never turn out the way they should on Idol. All this gushing over him by the judges this early in the competition does make me nervous. Especially by Simon. Mark my word AI still has surprises up their sleeves.
In my opinion, David Cook deserves to win, Carly should come in second. However, no matter how far Cook goes he will be the top recording artist out of the whole bunch. Congrats to Cook this week! He is Awesome…

Yes, Ryan likes to point things out that maybe the contestants would rather he would not make a big deal over. I believe it was probably an emotional night for him and it wasn’t just because the judges liked him.

And I just watched his performance again and I absolutely see why the judges thought he was so brillant. There was nothing else they could say but to say he was GREAT! He amazes me, seriously he does…

It’s so obvious that David was singing this song for his brother, if you really listen to the words. I had tears the entire time he was on stage (and for most of the show before he even sang, just knowing his brother was there to see him). I can’t even imagine how overwhelming it all was for him, getting that praise from Randy and especially Simon, when his brother was there to share it with him. I have loved David this entire season, and after this week he became my most favorite Idol of all time. Love & peace to you, David!!

Okay. Wow.

I must have been watching another show or another performance because I thought it was awful. He was pitchy. It was too low for him. Of course that is only my opinion BUT technically, it wasn’t that great at all.

Hi all
when I first watched this last night I could
not concentrate on what he was singing because
I am so hopelessly smitten with him in so many
ways that I could not even be objective. I have
rewatched it several times and THUD, I love him.
The tears at the end were so touching and has a guy every looked more sweet and beautiful with tears in his eyes. I am a goner.
AND we get to see him again tonite, thank goodness because my own 12-step program does
not start till tomorrow night.

I swear to God, I left a message for DCook on one of those blogs. I told him to start slow (look like you want to have sex with whomever is listening to this song), raise the tempo, drag your mic stand on the stage like you did for billie jean, (ocassionally jerk the mic stand back) end it by making love to the mic with a soft sexy note like in Hello (which I am still thinking about constantly) and it will be a hit people will talk about for days. I told him to make sure Simon and Randy know the song well, change it up and make it totally your own (and do it like it’s a combination of billie jean and hello. He’s such a good boy–he listened LOL>

Can you imagine Randy gave DCook a figging STANDING OVATION. MC is his girl–so you have to be damm good to get that from Randy.

The judges start their critque and the stupid phone rings…it’s my son-in-law and he goes on and on (I’m not listening…” my daughter yells at him in the background: “Are you out of your mind! You know you can’t call her right after Cook sings…” They will be doing an intervention for sure. About one second after 9:00 I start dialing. Busy signal after busy signal. I don’t usually have that problem for that long. Those undecided who actually vote for the best performance of the evning (rather than a favorite) must have been voting for him. That made me happy for it took about half a hour for me to finally get a vote in. I voted for 2 hours (like I always do for David.) Then at 11:00 (I have to get up at 5:10), I watched him over and over again. It was almost 1:00 before I finally stopped. Then I got up early and went on my computer. His stuff was posted about 1/2 hour after the show last night (which I watched). By the morning one had already about 5,000 views. I’m telling you this song is going to sell through the roof when it hits iTunes. Then I go to work and find some early bird and talk their head off, then another, then another.

Oh, Lord I just can’t take any more of this–really. I was listening to David singing and I was standing yelling I was so happy, then crying because he started to (pompous my ass). That’s three songs he did with his own arrangement (Hello, Little Sparrow, and now Always be my baby). THAT IS WHY RANDY SAID YOU ARE THE MOST ORIGINAL CONTESTANT!!!!! I bet those DA people are eating crow now. And he said that he takes risks how many times now? Not to mention “you are ready now.” Then Simon said this twice about DCook in an interview that he makes all the other contestants look ridiculous and last night again but live.

I think Archie fans are starting to get nervous and that makes me SO FRIGGING HAPPY.
