So I finally listened to all 20 songs in the running for the American Idol Songwriter competition, and all I can say is: the finals are going to suck. Whoever are going to the finals are screwed. This is even worse than last year. In fact, I listened to the songs before going to sleep yesterday — and I woke up having nightmares! I was very sick this morning. These tunes have left me incapacitated. They’re that bad. In fact, I don’t even have to make a commentary on them as some of the titles are self-evident.

The Archey Angels are raving about a song called “Here I Am” which unfortunately, doesn’t work for me. This over-sentimental tune is the reason why my other conspiracy theory: David Archuleta being the biggest shock elimination in American Idol history — just went up a notch. I am very worried now.

One of the things I’ve noticed is that it is blatantly obvious that Idol has thrown in some really bad songs here so that those which are “listenable” can rise to the top of the ratings (similar to what they do in the Top 24). I’m just imagining the musicians recording these tracks having a good laugh in the studio.

My choice would be the generic “No Turning Back” which sounds like something the Jonas Brothers might sing and is aligned with David Archuleta’s target audience. It’s also a song whose title is part of the song’s melodic hook unlike “Here I Am” — where the melody for the words Here I Am is a whine. David Cook might also be able to pull it of, barely. Sigh. This is a disaster. (My second choice would be the other sentimental song, “Faith” — which is in line with this year’s “Shout to the Lord” mega-hit, LOL)

You Believed in Me — very 1990s. DC can probably pull this off in a not-so-cool way. If they let Jason Castro strum this on his guitar, it may turn out awesome.

Overcome — another generic sounding song made just for DC. I can’t imagine anyone else singing this and not suck big time.

Here I Am — this is most definitely made for DA. Very typical of Idol coronation song. This may be the winning song (not that I like it).

Only Love — this one is for Carly. KLC can countrified this awesomely. DC can do this too.

You Can Do Anything — Brooke and DA can do this. I can’t stand the cliché.

Fly Me Away — Brooke & KLC would do well with this. DA can sing this but it would put me to sleep. Don’t pick this one, Archey Angels.

When You Come From Nothing — OMG, made just for KLC! However, Carly would do better than her.

Faith — the only one I can imagine Syesha would sing. Carly would do well too. I don’t think the guys want to sing this.

Believe — DA can do this although I don’t think R&B is his thing.

All You Will Need — Eep. Only for Carly but I imagine Hillary Duff would do better here.

OMG I need to rest my bleeding ears.

Here I am would be terrible for David A. Wrong on so many levels. No Turning Back reminds me of Angels last week. He may have missed a note or two, but it was still my fav performance. If he wants a career he needs a little beat to his song. I guess many Arch Angels are afraid Cook would kill on this song. I think others are better for Cook and think it’s too Jonas Brothers for Cook and he would look silly singing it. I don’t know. Whatever strategy to win. But wow at some of these songs. They are winning a singing contest which may not even mean most successful idol. I’d describe many of these songs as self indulgent. Archie in the biggest shock elimination ever!!!! Sadly, I fear that too.

First impressions, with apologies to the songwriters, I’m sure you’re wonderful people:

You Believed in Me – awful
Overcome – indulgent, self congratulatory
Here I am – maybe
Only Love – too Country
You Can do Anything – too slow
Fly Me Away – love song (not for DA), too slow
Faith – too overtly religious
Believe – JT vibe; not too bad (first song I actually listened to the whole way through)
All You Will Need – dumb lyrics; rock vibe
Thank You Whatever Comes – too slow
In This Moment – Starts with “Mother”. Bleah!
Dream Big – “Child in me”? NO!
Something Like Heaven – Love? no.
You Believe in Me – too slow, trite
Align – Indy rock vibe; too weird
We’re Going to Make It – love song. No
The Time of My Life – Wouldn’t showcase DA’s voice, but lyrics are appropriate to him.
No Turning Back – kept listening for Rickey’s sake. It grew on me. Would work for either David.

Ehm, well now it’s especially obvious that it’s going to be David vs. David in the Top 2. Every song is either a ballad or a pop/rock song.

For Archie I really do like ‘Here I Am’, I could imagine him singing it furing the finale while crying…awww! Although I’m not sure a ballad would be a good first single. I also like Something Like Heaven, but the lyrics are extremely cheesy and I don’t know if it’s best suited for Archies loud, soulful voice.

But all in all, most of them are pretty bad, and many sound extremely similar.

In This Moment — DC with the help of some painkillers. The lyrics is for DA though.

Dream Big — Seriously…little girl?! How can they pick a gender-oriented song to be in the running? Anyway, this one is for Carly.

Something Like Heaven — DA and DC can pull this off.

You Believe In Me — LOL at the first song title. This one is present tense. Anyway, Carly, Brooke and KLC for this. DA would do okay too.

Align — Duh, DC..barely.

We’re Gonna Make It — Um…KLC?

The Time of My Life — Magic rainbow on the horizon? It seems like something for DC but I seriously doubt he could pull this off without sounding cheesy. DA can pull this off if he wants to.

No Turning Back — DC again…but the lyrics is scary.

Rickey, you are so right. This is even worse than last year (but I actually can imagine Blake doing a better job with these songs than last years’).

Yikes.

At least we can take comfort in knowing that the people singing in the demos will not actually be releasing those songs!

Whoever wins (David Archuleta) can potentially make some of those sound slightly less cheesy.

I don’t know why AI continues to have these types of songs for the finale. When was the last time the Idol’s first “single” was actually a hit? I remember Kelly Clarkson’s being somewhat popular, but beyond that, I can recall none of the songs.

Oh well.

Listening to the songs without thinking of any particular Idol singing it, my favorites are Believe and Something Like Heaven, so far. They seem radio friendly to me.

I agree with Rickey that it’s going to be a David/David showdown or a David/Carly one. You can tell that they have put at least one song in the group for every top 8 contestant. “Only Love” is definitely for KLC but since she’ll get nowhere near the top 4, much less the top 2, who cares? There are some decent David C. songs but they just don’t seem like something a contestant would sing at the finale. “When You Come From Nothing” is so obviously Carly’s song – just listen to the lyrics! Not to mention the melody was made for her. I’m not thrilled with any of the songs but if I had to chose the most AI-ish song, “In This Moment” seems like the only song that I could see either David, Cook or Carly singing (the most likely top 3)…

These are horrible and so generic. Why does Idol have to have these horrible songs in the finale? It should have ended with Do I Make You Proud! That was the worse song ever sung on American Idol, by the worse Idol ever. I think the general public agrees with me seeing as how Kelly has had the only successful song. Recording a cover version of a song they sing really well would do better on the radio than these sh*tty songs!

I agree that Believe, Something Like Heaven (this one is another gender-oriented song unfortunately) and No Turning Back are the more radio-friendly of the bunch.

I am scared they will have the viewers pick a song for each of the top 2. Last year everyone knew it was horrible and unfair to Blake, but I think it would benefit Carly (my favorite) to sing the same song as David Archuleta because she could probably sing it better and put a bigger WOW moment into it. If they pick a song like Here I Am for David and one of those “rock” songs for Carly then he is absolutely going to win it. She is going to do amazing this week if she sings Hero!!!!!!! Carly needs to do more songs with runs. Songs like Hero will get her to the finale. Anyone agree?

SOMETHING LIKE HEAVEN

i think this song will do well with david.

the melody is good and if you look at the lyrics it talks about ‘long and winding road’ and ‘angels and heaven’ – i know, kinda cheesy, but it seems to summarize the previous songs of DA.

i’ve listened to it a few times and it starts to sink in. this will also give DA the chance to challenge his vocal abilities, somthin that ‘here i am’ will not. ‘here i am’ is too slow and the melody does not soar. if you listen to ’something like heaven’, the last part will also showcase his belting skills.

i think this song can appeal to david’s young crowd. it sounds ‘poppish’ in the genre of boybands (not too slow) but at the same time vocally challenging. DA can make runs and changes with this song and it will be awesome.

downside: DC might also pull this through and make his ‘rockish’ arrangement with it and as generic as it is, this song can have this kind of potential.

I would consider these as coronation songs ONLY, not their first major single or what you would expect from the contestant on their album, or to hear them on the radio. (Jordin had to wait to get Tattoo before she got real radio play.)

With that in mind… “Here I Am” while INCREDIBLY cheesy would carry DA to victory. Waverider: I kinda like Something Like Heaven as an option too.

i really hate Songwriter–the show isn’t about them, it’s about the idols! i would think if anything the winner gets ridiculed for the overdone, cliche song rather than fame.

why don’t they get some celebrity songwriter to write it? then again, judging from the mentors this year, neil diamond may not be the best AI songwriter

i think DA could do between “okay” to “good” with probably any song. but he needs something he can nail (and that preferably isn’t the cup of tea for other contenders, not that i am like that!)

let’s just put it this way: i doubt JC or DC or CS or any other fans are voting for Here I Am… it is the territory of the one and only Mr. Archuleta. THAT is why I am behind it really.

My view is that everyone needs to pick the song that favors their favorite, not what they might personally listen to.

I’m not liking Here I am much either, but I think DA is the ONLY one who can pull it off. Something like Heaven is a prettier, catchier song, but doesn’t the track’s singer sound a little bit like Daughtry? Which means David Cook could probably pull it off well? So, I can’t vote it too high. As much as I am considering what DA will sound good with (here i am), i am considering what the others will sound bad with (believe, maybe time of my life)

jersey: I don’t see “Here I Am” being the coronation song — it’s just too sentimental and slow. The upbeat songs sound more geared toward David Cook. That’s why I am considering the shock elimination now. But anything can still happen of course. Just a word of caution that because there’s a super sappy song called “Here I Am” on this list, David Archuleta has this show in the bag.

DA’s Top 3: Something Like Heaven, Faith, Here I Am

I agree with Rickey that “Faith” could work. i don’t see it as a religious song. in this context faith = trust/confidence, not religion.

On “No Turning Back” — no way it’s a DA song, especially if the arrangements are not able to be changed. This is a song that gives DC the crown, assuming he’s in the finale.

PS–I don’t think there will be a rigged shocker elimination… something like that would be bound to get out and AI would be ruined forever. I don’t think Nigel or Simon Fuller’s wallets would go for that, no matter the drama/press. and many people would boycott the show. i certainly wouldn’t watch.

Not only will this be a coronation song, it will be sung throughout the tour as the grand finale, right? that’s what poor Jordin had to do with This Is My Now, and then it stuck out like a sore thumb on her debut CD. Ugh, I think I’ll pass on these, but thanks for the warning.

i don’t mean this in a negative way, but do you think DA might like some of these songs that we think are cheesy? for example, “you can do anything” sounds like something they would sing as an Olympic theme song (reminds me of YTV) — i could maybe see him getting into it even though the lyrics are way sappy. lol. i’m just sayin…

I seriously think “Here i Am” is the David Archuleta song. It’s sincere, like David, and builds to a beautiful ending. Everyone can have their opinion, but I seriously think “Here I Am” is the Finale song. And David Archuleta will be brilliant singing it.

As an Archie fan, I’m not voting for anything that DC can knock out of the park. Assuming that it will be a battle of the David’s (which I’m not sure will actually happen).

That said, I have to say “Believe” is a really good R&B song that DA can make his own. The words are good, and it’s also the first song I was able to listen to all the way through.

My second choice is “Something Like Heaven”. Again, I think the words are meaningful in respect to DA, but it doesn’t have the runs that Believe has.

My third choice is “Faith”

I also do not like “Here I am”.

There are a lot of BAD songs. Wow.

Here I Am is my choice too. How can anyone NOT hear DA soaring on those notes and adding runs and being BRILLIANT? I mean, it’s ridiculous!!!! I don’t care about the sap factor of the lyrics.

My only hope is they add some instruments to build out the sound, and maybe pick up the tempo on the chorus.

i personally think “Here I Am” is a terrific song. Maybe I’m not as “savvy” as other listeners – and I admit that – but I think it’s beautiful. And David Archuleta would be fantastic singing it.

Rickey, so many fans are rallying around this song. It’s wonderful. And it plays into David A’s strengths’s. I love this song. Everyone – please support this song so David can win!

My first choice is now, officially, “Believe”.

This is r&b, and nobody BUT DA can pull this off. I think we all need to come to a consensus and do it soon, so we can all get behind a song. We can still pick “here i am” just in case, but I think voting for “something like heaven” is a BAD idea b/c apparentlyh a lot of jason’s fans like it too, and it is DEFINITELY something that dc can sing. Not a good scenario for DA. So, as much as I like Something like heaven, i will vote 1 star for it, and 10 stars for believe AND Here i am.

i am afraid if we all split our votes we will lose to a united DC front (if there is one–i am sure there will be).

we should reconcile and go with what we *KNOW* DA can knock out of the park. does anyone think DA cannot nail Here I Am? I do not see the others as letting him get those big notes and runs in, which is his calling card. Yes, Believe is a fine song, but it does nothing to play to DA’s strengths.

i know i sound too indulgent, but i have decided to rally behind ’something like heaven’ – i do agree the song choices are a mess. but they are quite generic, and i’m sure (as always) AI has learned it’s lesson, they will surely let the contestants do their arrangements and their personal takes on the songs. i read somewhere that nigel was not happy with last year’s song, so i think this year they will try to improve it.

i still remain positive that there is no conspiracy here. yes, there will be drama (and they need to get it somewhere else!), but i think eliminating DA from the competition will damage their rating rather than help it. so i urge the fans not to be disheartened, rather continue to vote and vote feverishly for DA as you guys always do.

in as much as they have the first option to manage him after AI, if DA will not take the crown, they might just lose the chance to get him signed for their label partners, because as early as now, other major labels are showing interests and these companies might just give DA an offer he could not resists. winning AI on the other hand will automatically bound him to 19 management and whatever label partner AI will be working with. so the conspiracy theory will work against nigel, et al, if in case. so here’s hoping.

Pretty sad. The thing is any decent pop song writer wouldn’t touch AI. So you get a bunch on wanabes and non-mainstream genre songwriters.

If “Here I Am” gets picked, its going to be on the strength of the DA fanbase. It reminds me of one of those songs that plays over the movie credits.

“Faith” s a pretty good song; not well suited for AI, but still a decent song.

“The Time of My Life” and “No Turning Back” are the two songs that may be the most adaptable.

After listening to all the songs; I wondered how many are published Christian Contemporary songwriters like last years winners.

The DC fans I know don’t even vote! I wouldn’t be too worried. If DA loses it is definitely a fix. But I think DA is a cash cow for them and they know it. DC would probably be better off like Daughtry, he would have much more freedom in his career. I think DA is better suited for the AI machine. I have a theory that DC has been sort of setting things up to leave.

Here’s what someone over on the AI Boards said about Here I Am and I have to say I agree with ARchie continuing to be labeled boring with regards to it (not that I care, but I’d rather see Archie sing something else):

“The thing with “Here I am” is that I can totally see DC and JC do it and incorporate their own style into it and be called original. Whereas if Archie did it, he’d be termed “typical” or “boring”.. But, just imagining DC or JC do “believe” leaves my stomach wanting to regurgitate whatever I ate for dinner today, there’s just no way either can pull off “Believe” unless they drank some Luther Vandross juice before went on stage or something.”

in the finals, if people will here the song ‘ something in heaven’ they will only relate it to one and one contestant only – it will be David Archuleta. listen to the song intently, what does ‘heaven’ ‘angel’ ‘long and winding road’ remind you about. guys the song itself speaks about DA’s journey in AI. the 1st line of the song says:

“i’ve said goodbye to the boy that I once knew”

the boy has grown and finally, he has found his niche (by winning the title of course).

again, i’m rallying for this song.

no JC will not win against DA in the finals (whatever the song is) and i will explain it lengthily next time. i’m more worried with DC though (and i will explain it also next time – or not! of course you all know the reason). and yes, he might just sing ’something in heaven’ well, but as i have said the song only has DA’s story written all over it and people will get it, while DC will not be able to relate (as well as the audience) to the song, it’s not his story.

I really see “Here I Am” as the Finale song. And when you read the lyrics and think about David, it’s perfect. He’s saying to the world, “Here I am, I got through this.” I really love it.

rozbrown, I kept seeing Here I Am hyped all over the AI message boards so I guess I was expecting a lot out of it, so when I heard it I was disappointed. I could barely listen to the whole thing, although I know that Archie would not have the same effect on me and I would love it. I agree that he sounds awesome on ballads, but overall I just like Something Like Heaven and Believe better. I agree with waverider on Something Like Heaven being like his story, I was thinking that as I listened. I will try and give Here I Am a fair chance though. I’m not casting my vote just yet.

fluffy, I’ve been thinking the same thing about DC pulling out of the competition a la Jacob Hoggard, CI season 2. I happen to think that winning might not be the best thing in the world for an artist like DC.

BUT, he does seem to be all eyes-on-the-prize right now, so what do we make of that? Maybe he just wants to get as far as possible, and then take the reins on his terms? I don’t know.

He is a great singer, but he lacks that something special…if you ever watched Australia Idol…DA is the equal to Matt Corby…he was favourite to win all season but he came runner up because he remained the same level of quality (though good) every performance. regarding binding DA under the 19 mgt, this will be a good idea. DA is still young and he still has time to develop his style and learn from the business. DC and the rest will not benefit from being managed by 19 as they will not have freedom to express their musicality, since these lots, have already understood what they can and want to do.

one critic said that DC might bomb one of his performances when reaching the finals just so that he will be purposely eliminated. winning AI is said to be not beneficial to a would-be rocker, since he will not gain credibility with his rocker/bad boy status. that was just on opinion though, but i’m inclined to believe that.

I don’t think they rig the voting, I think they spin doctor the show. I’m sure AI producers had lots to say when DA was dubbed the winner after the first show. Got to keep it exciting right. Okay now this is a stretch but with if they screwed with David on purpose (the AI producers) for Beatles Week 1. i think so too. i am inclined to think that DC is listening to what chris daughtry and bo bice are saying. it’s a win-win for DC. he has gained credibility as a singer/performer and not to mention following/recognition, now it’s about time that he regains the rocker credibility by bowing out and be the rebellious one and add some angst to his badge as an outsider from ‘mainstream’.

i have been reading stuffs lately (rubbish for the most part, LOL!) and i came across an article describing AI as a cheesy singer’s venue and there is no way a true-rocker can win a cheesy competition, etc. DC is just using the contest to gain following and be recognized, but any true rocker will not want to win AI – it’s a career suicide (DC can ask amanda overmeyer or for that matter, bo bice and chris daughtry, et al.). a TRUE rocker does not need this venue to showcase his talent, but maybe to gain a following.

I don’t like “Here I Am” – way off the cheesy scale for me.

Surprised me that I liked a few – ALIGN (could see everyone being able to sing their version of it) BELIEVE (maybe too timberlake-y and DREAM BIG (for Carly, not for DC). No Turning Back – didn’t work for me, dawg. You Believe in Me, if sung by a contestant at the end, reminded me of Sally Field’s Oscar acceptance speech “you like me, you really like me!”

DA can make cheesy work, so he’s all set.

I think it’s great AI gives a chance to songwriters – they rarely get the credit they deserve. My heart goes out to these songwriters – many have great voices!

My humble opinion here? They all suck. They are all sanitized pablum. I don’t see how AI wins here. Assuming they want to sell alot of recordings and have people anxiously awaiting the finale, how in the world do these songs help? To me, they are cringeworthy. Now, I happen to like both Davids and prefer DC. When I picture DC going over these songs, word lover that he is, it isn’t pretty. I really wonder how he’s viewing this picture since he must have had a pretty good idea that AI would take the road most cheesy. I think alot of his audience would cringe at him singing any of these. Yes, ‘No Turning Back’ is less revolting. Great!

What about some sort of campaign to ask 19E to let the final 2 choose between providing their own song (with final 19E approval) or choosing one of these songs? I know, DC writes great songs already so that might be considered biased. But since they want an original song, it sure would make the final alot more interesting and profitable for them. What do y’all think?

Most of these songs are typical album space wasters and 50% are KLC songs (her whole album is all in one place) and the other is 50% david C songs (though crappy).

David A – Something Like Heaven (because it’s veri modern (cept for the chorus) and here I am is such a boring song (verses are acceptable but chorus gahhh) + same name as last year’s Aus Idol winner’s song + worst than the aus song))

David C – No Turning Back (not an idol-ish song but rocky and close enough, add gospel back up singers and lose the middle-eastern sound and you got a winner)+ put a guitar on him.

Carly – Only love (cool beat cept repetitive)

KLC – Dream Big (Atleast it has a drum beat and pop-ish) or When you come from nothing (which would be very appropriate it she wins haha)

Jason C – The time of My life (acoustic, he would only be good with no drum beat).

Syesha – You Can Do Anything. Sadly they didn’t really cater for her >< she is such a great singer and ussually I don’t like divas.

Brooke White – You believe in Me (would be good if she can play the piano to this, a wonderful sight to see some1 sing and play live)

I want Something Like Heaven because most of them could do it and it’s the best of the rest.

Dr. Odd – completely disagree – I think DC took it very seriously – and he took a chance on a song he loved by one of his favorite groups – more power to him (with lyrics that had deeply personal meaning, with his brother’s illness, the orange bracelet he wears for the little girl, etc).

He went out into the crowd and really tried to get everyone psyched for Gives Back (which was the point of the evening!). I thought he rocked it (and the song on iTunes is great).

I couldn’t bring myself to listen to them all (I really have an allergic reaction to this category of crap) so I listened to the three that the majority of folks on the various threads seemed to have narrowed it down to: “Something Like Heaven,” “Here I Am,” and “Believe.”

For me there’s no contest, as long as the contestants are allowed to toy with arrangements. And here’s why: “Believe” is least cringe-producing from the standpoint of both lyrics and composition, but the demo arrangement is too fast and too boy-bandy, as someone said. Slowed down, and with a more sophisticated arrangement, this could be a decent number.

The music to “Here I Am” is not at all bad, but the lyrics made me vomit a little in my mouth. I mean: seriously, I would literally not be able to watch or listen to Archie singing those hack, cheeseball, corny, predictable, gag-me-and-suffocate-me-now lyrics.

“Something Like Heaven” is bad all around. The lyrics are not quite as bad as “Here I Am,” but the composition is worse.

For me, it’s “Believe.”

I just went back and listened to all the songwriter songs.

“Something Like Heaven” is really not a David A. song. The chorus has that funny falsetto thing on the second note of each line. The song on a whole does nothing for David A. AND the song feels very formulaic. Nothing new or fresh.

That’s a part of what I like about “Here I Am”. The structure isn’t so obvious that you go “oh, a, a, b , a” song structure. “Here I Am” seems fresh to me.

And it seems to have the wonderful simplicity and honesty that David A. excels at. David A has been at his best when he has a nice, honest, fresh lyric and melody to sing. Ballad! He doesn’t seem to get the same response with the mid-tempo songs. Let’s help David sing what he does best!

Maybe I am being very naive here…this season is the first that I am watching this show. However, I fail to understand how a shocking elimination in the finale is going to improve the show ratings? ‘coz there are no more episodes beyond the finale, right? And if they do eliminate DA at the finale, I am sure the show viewership will go only DOWN. I am sure that all his die hard fans would not watch the next season, and I do believe the producers know very well how popular DA is. Would appreciate if someone can clear this up for me.
Having said that, I guess we need to choose on songs with good lyrics and upbeat tempo, if we want DA to win over the other side of the viewers who think he only sings ballads. ‘coz one thing is for sure, if DC is in the finale, then he would rock even a ballady song, and his fans would go wild ..lol

DA, if eliminated, wouldn’t be the first talented contestant to not win. Daughtry, Jennifer Hudson and Clay Aiken all went on to huge careers without winning. Why did Taylor Hicks or Reuben what’s-his-name win AI? Nobody bought their records. TV is all about drama, so just going for the obvious doesn’t make for interesting TV. There may be lots of love on Rickey.org for DA but there’s equally as many detractors elsewhere that find him boring and limited in his musical range.

I like Here I Am, Believe, and Something Like Heaven the most.

If it was just based on what song I like the most, I would pick Something Like Heaven. The song is not too upbeat, not too slow, just right. I believe it could sell very well.

If I were to pick a song that was a ballad type for David A, I would pick Here I Am. I don’t like it that much because it is kinda slow, but the song isn’t all that bad.

But if I were to pick a song only David A. could do, I would pick Believe. Only he could pull it off. None of the others could really do it without looking dumb. Brooke and Carly couldn’t do it. Jason is just too dull to do that, and Cook has a rocker type voice, so R&B wouldn’t work well for him at all. Only David A could come CLOSE to pulling it off. I don’t know how anyone else could arrange it to their liking.

I do agree with the others. If we want to pick a song no one else could do, we have to pick Believe, or secondly, Here I Am. We can’t pick Something Like Heaven, no matter how much we like it. This isn’t about what we like,it’s about what song gives David Archuleta the best chance of winning. That’s why I will do whatever it takes so he can win. If there’s a shocker elimination, I will stop watching the show.

For some reason I can not picture Archie singing Believe. The R&B thing just doesn’t seem like a good choice for him. The song itself just sounds like a typical love song sung by a boy band. Maybe it’s the person singing it.Me picturing him singing it in the finale is not looking good either.
IMO, ‘Here I Am’ seems like the perfect choice for him. The lyrics make it seem like the song was written for him…breaking out of his childhood phase, his struggle during AI, he’s ready now to start his long and fullfilled career, he’s ‘where he’s supposed to be, he’s found his way’. I mean I guess the lyrics are cheesy, but they’re true.
And we all know he shines with the ballads, why not let him win and end S. 7 with a bang.
Imaging DC or JC singing it is just laugh worthy, too.

Since they are trying to give amateur singers a chance at stardom through Idol and dancers through SYTYCD, they are trying to do the same with songwriters through this venue. I’m not saying that I care for the idea since a lot of these songs do suck, but not all of them. It would be better to have Diane Warren write it.

You Believed in Me – Definitely a song made more for DC.

When You Come From Nothing – KLC won’t win, but I would love to hear her sing this one. Carly could sing this one too.

Believe – This is for an R&B artist which doesn’t pertain to anyone left.

Something Like Heaven – I like it, but it’s more of a love song and not an inspirational song for the finale.

The Time of My Life – Would like to see DC sing this if he wins.

“Align” – Not bad, kinda catchy. Would be great for David Cook. Not a bad start to these…. 8/10

“When You Come From Nothing” – Awful. Cheesy. The studio singer sounds terrible in the chorus and is pitchy throughout (is that Alaina Whitaker?). Wouldn’t be good for anyone. 2/10

“Believe” – Cool piano lick in the beginning. It really doesn’t fit any of the contestants this year. It’d also be better if it were sung by a girl. Cheesy lyrics. Something about it just doesn’t work for me – it’s very copycat. 5/10

“The Time of My Life” – Okay there are already two songs with this title! The song itself isn’t too bad. It would be a great song for Phil Stacey. 7/10

“No Turning Back” – Very bizarre melody line in the melody. The chorus is sort of catchy… sort of. It would get old if I heard this song over and over several times. I can’t see this fitting anyone this year. 5/10

“Only Love” – I like this one except the background vocals sound like something from “Good Morning, Starshine.” The time signature is 6/4 which is pretty different and makes the song interesting. I get a good vibe from this one. 8/10

“Something Like Heaven” – This could be good for David Archuleta but I could see David Cook, Carly, Brooke, or Jason doing this one. This may be a good choice since it would work for many of the contestants. But it’s not very creative…. 7/10

“You Believe in Me” – Yuck. Sounds like a rejected diva song – like something on MadTV or SNL making fun of Whitney Houston or Celine Dion. It’s pretty bad. 1/10

“Overcome” – This would have been a great one for Michael Johns, too bad he’s gone. The song itself is predictable and sounds like something from a Sunday morning worship service. It’s okay but nothing to write home about. 6/10

“STRONGER” – What’s up with the caps? It’s a little goofy. Too country for most of the contestants. This is totally a submission just for KLC, but there is no way she’s making it to the finals. 4/10

“THANK YOU WHATEVER COMES” – What a cheesy title. Chord progression is again un-original and predictable. Might be a good one for Brooke with her at the piano and a choir to back her up. 4/10

“In This Moment” – Would have been perfect for Josiah Leming. A bit repetitive in the verse. But it’s interesting. Doesn’t really fit many of the contestants. David Cook would probably be the only one who could pull it off. The chorus isn’t nearly as good as the verses. 7/10

“Fly Me Away” – LOL – the intro sounds like music that plays when you take communion at church. Sounds like bad karaoke. Don’t like this at all. 1/10

“We’re Gonna Make It” – Not a bad female pop song. Wouldn’t work with a male voice though. The chorus is too high also. 6/10

“Dream Big” – Another good one for Kristy Lee Cook. Could also work for Brooke and maybe Carly. The bass drum is too loud in this demo. Just okay. Sounds like a track from Diana DeGarmo’s debut album. 5/10

“Here I Am” – I agree that it would probably good for David Archuleta but it’s a pretty boring song. I’m not a big fan…. 5/10

So after listening to all the songs I think I like “Align” and “Only Love.” Of the two I think “Align” has a better shot at making it – “Only Love” just doesn’t have what it needs to be a mega hit. Overall the songs were pretty average. The demos were pretty bad quality – the songs themselves were often marred by poor production and/or performances. I’ll be interested to see which one makes it.

everyone needs to keep in mind that this is a sing-off in the finale. one song, two people. who sings the same song BETTER is the person likely to win. so, as Virginia said earlier, you need to pick a song that will allow your fav to outshine the other contender.

with that said, i do see the strategy that Believe would be one only DA could do. I also, however, see how he could sing the daylights out of Here I Am, better than the other contestant who stands in the finale.

one thing is for sure — the vote is NOT about what song is has the best music or lyrics. (b/c that’s none of them!)

Dr. ODD, I’m not intending to say that a ballad won’t impress people. Just not the particular ballad of Here I Am. If there were a better choice, I’d probably go for that. I just didn’t particularly like Here I Am. So the next choice for me is Believe, which shows David’s more soulful/R&B side and could really impress everyone. I’m sure David would do an awesome job with Here I Am, but it doesn’t have the WOW factor. Believe is a little boy band-ish, but it’s different and as rascal said, if it’s changed up a bit will end up being the better choice.

#115, rascal, yes I am a huge Archuleta fan. I know he does the soulful thing extremely well, it’s the R&B I can’t picture, probably because I haven’t heard him sing anything like it before.

Honestly, it’s probably the singer of the actual song that’s getting to me. The cheesy, made for love song, feminine voice annoys me.

I’m mostly imagining the scenario of DA crying and stuttering (lol) during the finale, and this song just doesn’t read as a good finisher to me. Maybe as part of his album as a single, yes, but for a final moment, no. I’ve never watched American Idol and fell in love with a contestant like this, I’d just like to see him have his big final moment with a song he’d dominate. Like how Jordin had her huge ‘This is My Now’ note at the end, it was just like a huge happy relief of the season ending, and the contestant starting of her new life.
Of course that is just my opinion, maybe Believe will grow on me later

I’m just going to say that I think it’s a little too early to be declaring someone as the winner. There are at least three contestants that could take the title so let’s not get too presumptuous.

Anyway, there are some songs that fit each contestant but let’s remember that the songs are for the FINALE, not their albums. I mean, half of the songs are about love, not about living your dream. After listening to the songs several times, “In This Moment” and “The Time of My Life” seem to fit the idea of it being sung by the two finalists at the finale AND are decent enough to be possibly tolerated beyond this. AND I think that either of the Davids or Carly could sing them fairly well.

And are people seriously talking about Jason making it to the finale? Over David A, David C or Carly? SERIOUSLY?

After all these two are the only ones who can really sing melodies and hit the high notes. I think David A can pick any of the songs that can talk about his journey and do the runs that Randy loves. Voting for the final song ends 4/23 so it isn’t too early to be considering this topic. I think it’s a shame that all these songs are so cheese-filled since it sure doesn’t help AI’s street cred in the recording industry. I love inspiration as next as the next person, but these songs don’t fit that bill for me. Considering the big bucks over at 19E, it really does surprise me that this is the best 20 songs they could find.

I agree that you can tell most of the songs are either DC oriented or DA oriented. This is the good news, for me anyway, because I would love a David vs. David finale.

The bad news is that the songs aren’t great but I don’t think they’re all horrible. I’ve heard worse.

Something like Heaven is too strong a song for the other contestants, in particular DC, and Here I Am can easily be sung well by other contestants too.

I for one, have listened to the songs at least a dozen times each, and still don’t know what the lyrics are… I seriously just listen to the melody and imagine who can sing it well… that’s all that people are going to notice. They might pick up on the words, but it’s ultimately not that important. If both DA and DC sing Something Like Heaven, there’s a darned good chance that DC might sing it better than DA (I’m telling you, it sounds like it was a ballad written for DC), and that would stink, now wouldn’t it?!!! It would be worse than pickign Here I am, which might only suit DA, but could possibly be okay for DC too. So, that’s why my vote goes to Believe, b/c only DA will be able to pull that one off, hands down.

NOOOOO, the finals are gonna be a SNORE.

I really find “Faith” to be the most tolerable, though. The melody is distinct and significantly original compared to some of the others, and I agree with #36 (Dr.ODD), it doesn’t automatically translate to a Christian message. Plus, I can see most of them sing it with their own styles.

Though I agree that there are a few clunkers in the bunch. Songs that even I turned off less than half way through. But there were also some that I really liked.

For instance, the one I keep replaying is “Stronger.” There’s something about it that just grabs me. Yes, with the female demo vocal, it sounds like a song suited to Kristy Lee Cook, but I don’t know…

There’s also “Something Like Heaven” and a few others that I like.

Btw, the singer’s voice in “In This Moment” sounds familiar…lol.

What’s really sad is that the last song they sing is what some people remember. Honestly, who wants to hear “Do I Make You Proud” at the end of what is supposed to be a fierce singing competition? Are they trying to hurt the contestants? They should let them pick a song that truly fits their style and then let them change the arrangement. That is what they should be able to rest on before the voting begins.

I’ll admit that any composition I wrote would be ten times worse than all of these. And, the producers are asking people to write a certain type of song (upbeat, something to celebrate a success), and that limits the scope of creativity.

Anyway, I don’t think anyone would want any of these songs to be their first single. I mean, “Thank You Whatever Comes”? That’s like, not even a thing to say.

I’m not a musician, so my thoughts here are based solely on what I think our David would do well with.

David, IMO, has a voice much more like a John Mayer or Josh Groban. Can you really hear either of them singing any of the AI Songwriter selections? Ugh. (But no offense to the writers, I’m sure they did their best, as DA would say!)

Some on this board are pushing for “Believe” saying only DA could pull it off. I can’t see DA doing well on this song at all. Too many “single notes”, wouldn’t allow him to do his beautiful runs and crescendos. “Believe” sounds like a song written by or for Elliot Yamin (loved him, but very different than DA). Also could see Josiah Leming singing this, but not DA!!! Listen to “Believe” again and see if you don’t agree.

“Something Like Heaven” would definitely give DC an edge over DA. So, much as I prefer this song, better avoid it like the plague unless we want to see DA struggle.

I’m really stumped, but agree with others that if we want DA to shine, we need to pick a song that only he can sing well. While I don’t think either of these are great songs, I’m afraid I will have to vote for “Here I Am”, or “Faith”. DA could sing either of those.

hecansing, the Archie Angels over on the AI Boards are rallying to vote for Here I Am, Believe, and Something Like Heaven. So give all of them top marks and the other songs low marks. If we put all our eggs in one basket and only focus on one song and all the other fanbases are giving the DA style songs low marks (like Here I Am), then we’ll end up with a rocker song. However, if we spread our high votes out then we have a better chance of ending up with something perfectly suited for DA.

Hmmmm…just not sure. DA loves ballads with a strong message; I can just imagine his mortification when he looks at the song choices. (Hope we aren’t jinxing ourselves by assuming he will be in the finals.)

I still can’t see DA singing alot of the songwriter choices, including Heaven and Believe. If we don’t want to put all eggs in one basket, it almost seems like it might be better to also vote for a couple of the other slower ballad types, like You Believe in Me or In This Moment. Both are waaaaay off the cheesy scale,ugh, but more ballad-like at least.

Oh well, guess it’s probably just personal opinion. Time will tell.

This is more suited for DC but from a musical standpoint it’s the best one of the bunch. It’s something the general public could listen to without being turned off to whiney, sentimental lyrics. The only one I could see DA sing that no one else could is “Believe”.

Eeks! Nightmare! Okay, I personally prefer “Something Like Heaven”. It’s a song that, if the producers and judges are right, both Archie and Cookie can do. The only other two songs that I listen throughout are “Believe” which is something that Archie can do. Very Frankie J sort of vibe. And something different for a finale song, if you ask me. And for Rickey’s sake, “No Turning Back”, which takes time to get used to.

And “No Turning Back” sounds like nothing I can imagine David A. singing. It’s like nothing that he’s done the whole season, so why change your style and direction at the Finale? David A.’s best performances are when he’s sincere and connects to a nice ballad. That’s a big part of what made people fall in love with his performances.

I find it hilarious that Archie’s fans are freaking about about this whole finale deal. I’m not a fan of David Archuleta. Not at all. He seems like a nice kid, but that’s it. I find it funny that Archuleta’s fans are freaking out because ‘oh…he might be beat’. Well..he won’t. He’s got this in the bag. I’ve been watching AI for seven years and I’ve never seen such female teenage craze stuck on one contestant EVER. Yeah…the casual vote will count, but not against tons of teenage fans who will vote to the death aka. full two/four hours for Archuleta regardless of how he sounds. My guess? If he screws up, he’ll cry during that finale…and then he’ll for sure win it in a landslide because nobody is going to vote off the 12 year old who cries.

Cook is more talented, but he can’t win. His fans screw slightly older and although he is a heartthrob in his own right, I think Archuleta has a majority of the fans needed to win. Carly is great and I sense a comeback arch for her…but seriously. Again…how is she gonna beat Archuleta? Castro doesn’t stand a chance against Archie…so I notice nobody is scared of him. Archie will just outsing him. I’m intrigued that everyone is trying to pick songs that Cook can’t sing. I just don’t see how the song will make a difference this season at all.

That being said…I agree that all of the songs completely stink. I do not believe that these are the twenty best songs submitted…not for a second. Yeah…it does sound like shenanigans are going on…or at least future planning for David C/Archie/Carly to get there. But maybe it’s also to prevent (if in case two of the three don’t make it) the ‘other’ person in that finale from winning. All of these songs CAN be sung by the David’s/Carly to varying degrees, but there are SEVERAL that Jason/Brooke/KLC cannot sing. I’m not even counting Syesha in this. She’s toast. I agree…Syesha has no fans.

No Turning Back is a good choice for Archuleta. Something different but I think he can pull this off. What Archuleta needs is to bring out the unexpected and deliver. I think he can do this. Plus, it sounds contemporary—people will be able to imagine what kind of music he’s going to record.

“Here I Am” is good but I think this is better for Cook. Something different as well, maybe put a rock spin to it. But, OVERCOME is also a good choice for Cook. It is an alternative song but not too cheesy like the other songs.
