I’ve pretty much given up on defending David to those who don’t get him, but, for those who by virtue of the hype or the buzz or whatever have expectations of being catapulted through the back wall of their living room by his performances, you need to realize something:

Like great art, fine wine, and sublime music, there is an element of discovery in David’s appeal. He is not going to stun you into a deer-in-the-headlights expression with vocal pyrotechnics and bombast. What David offers is a unique and rare dimension of thoughtfulness, a subtlety that while never short on power, is nevertheless couched in subtlety. David does something that few performers–even many great ones–often neglect: He invites you to participate in his performance. He asks you to listen. And he makes you feel.

David Archuleta is an artist in the truest sense of the word. And it will no doubt take a generation for the true measure of his brilliance to be fully appreciated.

The runs were Awesome! A lot of people through in runs so they can find their pitch, but David’s were uber-controlled, but still added to the song. I sound like such a music geek, but again I was so impressed. (side note) Paula is retarded! & IMO a pretty crappy ’sideline’ dancer for a choreographer/former Laker Girl…

Loved Archie. Can’t wait to watch playback later.

Busy voting, just had to jump in though…

Firstly, David you can be my neighbor anytime, I would give anything to have you wake me up at all hours of the day or night with your practicing!!!

It was brilliant, he changed it up on us, I thought he might he is full of surprises, more subdued then what we expected but very mature, controlled and confident. I think that was smart, if he had of belted it out, like on his videos, Simon might have called him indulgent too. He is coming unto his own, a real young man.

Did he switch out the word ‘instead’ for ‘tonight’, I wonder why?

BTW, could David have looked any more gorgeous, how does he do it? I swear he looked just gorgeous!!! And yea…was the audience on mute tonight or what?

There were not tricks with Jess’ either. She performs the song live all the time (or did) and she is fantastic. A producer doesn’t just produce vocals. They do arrangements too.

Whew!!! Voting is over on the East coast. I’m EXHAUSTED!!! I don’t know how you all type and dial at the same time. I had my landline and cell phone, the landline got through most every time (an average of 7 per minute); the cell an average of 1 per minute. For a little while, about a 1/2 hr ago, I got 11 calls per minute in, but that was the peak. Around 900 for me again this week.

David did an amazing job tonight, though I’m not sure I enjoyed the arrangement quite as much as HIS other performances of the song. With that said, he couldn’t be beat and Simon hit the nail on the head when he said he’d ’sail through’ to the next round. The vision of him at the piano singing this song is one I won’t soon forget. Nobody else even came close tonight.

On another note, did any of you notice the post from the girl on one of the other boards who sent David a letter and questionnaire that he replied to (along with an autographed picture)??? I was blown away. Just where is he finding the time to be everything to all people? He just continues to amaze me.

I have to say, it was much more pleasant hanging out here and reading these posts than being over on the AI boards while voting. How was it over there, odd_anne? Were you able to keep them in line and focused?

On to David, he looked completely EXHAUSTED, but sounded amazing! I thought overall it was a surprisingly low energy night except for him … no-one else really did all that well (to me). Jason was good, but he sounded exactly like the version he copied.

I think the girls would have gone a little wilder if he didn’t have the barrier of the piano between him and the audience, but I did feel like I was at one of his concerts watching him. Just beautiful!

It’s been awful tonight, my phone died because we got so many late calls and charged it for ten minutes and again again. But I was very happy with his performance, my daughter started to sing angels with him in front of the tv, so I had to watch it again here on Rickey’s. I don’t know where Simon get that nasaly comment, but I think he started with a low key in the begining but pull it off brilliantly. Now looking at dialidol I think we got back to the begining of Idol where there is no second front runner, weeks before was the other David now Jason again, I think if their fans continue doing that to them eventually are going to hurt them and one of them will go home sooner than later, that’s why we cannot split our votes. Well, David changed up the tune in the verses to fit his range very nicely. And the runs at the end had the runs-loving Randy creaming in his pants. So it’s all good.

I do wish that he wasn’t playing the piano though (I do realize that it gave him an air of confidence and maturity). Unless you’re a piano man extraordinaire, or at a small club/bar and they’re short of musicians, or you’re singing w/ just the piano (like you’re dueting w/ yourself), I find playing the piano while singing on this big stage w/ a full orchestra a bit pretentious.

He’s a fantastic vocalist so why do we need to distract ourselves w/ him playing the piano? I wish he could just sit on the chair singing then stands to deliver the chorus… which brings me to the next point…

I wish he had more time so he can repeat the chorus and power through it. This one verse/one chorus limitation attributes to a feeling of letdown comparing with the original (when Robbie had over 4 minutes to bust through this wonderful song).

But he sang it melodically and beautifully and did all he could. And I look forward to the full studio recording.

He looked tired (they all do). And it was cute that Paula told him to get some sleep. What a mama!

WOW!!!!

Simply put… the BEST performance EVER!!!

5 minutes before i saw it my heart was already bursting , palpitations and heavy breathing , I can’t stand the suspense… David in a printed long sleeve number and a grand piano! All our prayers of seeing David perform with a piano was answered.

And then it started…90 seconds later I had this
poignant feeling and thought that I am so privileged and lucky that i live in this lifetime to witness this brilliant young artist unfold his wings, take flight and soar to greatness!

I can say that this is the singular moment in IDOL history where greatness is really defined.

Ahhhh, this is pure bliss. I could die right now.

Glad to be hear and read all the adoring posts! Just finished voting for the 2 hours straight.

Loved it but it was TOO SHORT! Can’t wait for the studio version.

Loved the piano, but was so hoping he would get up and dive in for that chorus.

The way he performed on both videos, it was like he couldn’t help himself when he got to those lines.

I made my 13 yr old daughter watch both his video performances after the show to show her his passion as an 8th grader. She got a kick out of it since she is in 8th grade now.

And I got to see those performances again too!

Truly amazing! I was pleasantly pleased with this performance.

One thing though, has anyone else noticed that he tends to be much more nervous at the piano? He has twice as much to mess up with, and I think that gets to him.

My point, it may have been vocally better without the piano, but it was still an excellent performance.

It’s also great that (as far as I’ve noticed) his runs are completely improvisational. Amazing!

Oh my, teary moment! “Lets their wings unfold..” THAT was amazing! It was brilliant that he sang a higher melody for when the chord progression fell to a minor chord to bring out the passion in such a melodic movement. He has an amazing natural feel for music.

It’s quite amazing, at such a young age, how he feeds off the crowd. You can see it right at 2:16 on the video above … when the crowd starts getting crazy, he has this little smile on his face as he looks out at them, and he really seemed to rev up. I just love him!

I hope he repeats this song again in the competition (at the end, where they get to pick a song they already did) and does it without the piano. I think it would have made a huge impact if he would have started out by sitting on the stage somehow (maybe on the steps) and then standing when he really got into the chorus, and belted it out. But, overall just loved him, as usual, and already pre-ordered it.

Yeah, I’m just glad we all got our dose of David, I was starting to get worried for you guys, and myself!

Honestly, it was a good performance, but I’m somewhat upset about his choice to play the piano. It takes concentration from his singing.

He made a few vocal mistakes that are associated with nerves; starting a note too flat, and ‘gliding’ up to the correct pitch.

It’s too bad that the keys make him nervous. He wasn’t born to play the piano, he was born to sing.

Sorry, David, trash the keys. You are complete without the aid of a timelessly crafted instrument.

I’ve been pretty crazed lately. I teach full time and also have a small tax practice (CPA) so these few weeks are super insane because of my extreme case of ODD.

Not to mention that my daughter’s confirmation party is this Saturday–still don’t have all my ducks in a row.

Mom’s coming over at 9am to paint our “music room” (for lack of a better name) so I still need to empty it out.

Let’s see…I have to be at school at 7:00am so I have 7 hours and 5 minutes to empty that room, finish 2 more tax returns and oh yea, sleep.

I also tutor math 5 hours a week in the evenings and teach the confirmation class at our church. This week is particularly crazy with Confirmation rehearsals.

I’ll come up for air after April 15th

My intent was that he shouldn’t play piano anymore. I am glad that he did it for this performance, and I don’t think that he should try it again until he becomes more comfortable about hitting all of the right keys.

I just think it makes him more nervous, which is something that all singers should avoid.

I have to give credit where it’s due though, he did a great thing by playing the piano; by all means it didn’t make the performance bad at all!

I think that vocally he could have done better without the keys, but that’s just my opinion.

Agree about Jason….and oddly enough I think that MJ was extremely underrated and JC was extremely overrated.

I really enjoyed MJ tonight, plus he is the only contested (correct me if I missed it) that didn’t have a pre-video interview to talk about his song choice. Then we he tried to address that with Randy, talking about his dream, he was shot down and thrown under the bus.

Jason on the other hand, was okay, but did not live up to the judges pimping. His performance really didn’t do much for me.

I don’t know if I agree that the slight lack of pristine polish was due entirely to the multi-tasking, Lucid. The kids are apparently dog-tired this week, from all the extra performances, press, and whatnot for IGB. I think that may have added to the challenge, anyway.

I, for one, would consider it a sacrifice if I went to David Archuleta concert and didn’t see him throw down some tunage at the ivories…

About your boss… What I do when I don’t want others to see what I have open in my task bar at the bottom of my screen is this:

I open several windows, usually just my Firefox Google homepage. This way, they “stack” in the task bar and there is no specific title in view to give away what I have open! Try it. It really gives me piece of mind – and privacy when I want to avoid the family’s eye-rolling…or just to pretend I’m hard at work with tax returns.

Again, the uncontrollable laughing aloud at my desk all by myself does sometimes give me away!

Try it though, see if it works for you.

I think it’s great that David is one of the few vocalists on AI right now that doesn’t need an instrument to perform well.

Jason Castro seems to rely on his guitar/mini guitar

If I am being honest (as Simon sez) I have never liked Angels anywhere near as much as almost all his other songs anywhere. I have been much more partial to Angels in the Alleyway for example. I am glad he sang it tonight though for all of you who love the song so much, and because he really loves the song himself. He sang it beautifully.

I spent a little time earlier while voting browsing the DC and Jason forums, even a little Carly Smithson, and the angst was palpable in DC’s and Carly’s. I usually don’t ‘go there’ but it was enlightening to see how much they love their idols, just like we do David, and how painful it is to vote vote vote and not see your idol doing well on “that site”.

It puts in perspective both our need to continue to support David by voting and our need to understand the big picture. Because we are not yet worried about losing him off the show, we worry about so many other little things. I am just trying to relax and enjoy it a little more!

Also, the only thing that makes me think that the keys may have impacted his vocals is that he had the same problems with Another Day in Paradise. His vibrato clenched up in a few moments, as it did in ONE of the notes at the very beginning of tonight’s performance.

It could be a coincidence though. The same thing happened with You’re the Voice at the beginning. Maybe he had another reason to be so nervous.

Heck, sometimes I feel bad for some of these contestants even though I am not crazy about any but David. With Randy, who by the way has a better ear for pitch than even Simon I think, and will almost always tell them when they are off, has a hard time giving the really bad news. When he says “it was ok for me” or “it was nice”, that means, “I didn’t like it”. He is hard on them without it sounding quite as bad as Simon.

About all this thing about the piano.I think he didn’t stood up because of Simon. When he did it on ADIP Simon said that he souldn’t and then he said the same thing to Brooke in Everybreath you take. Maybe David tought about it because after all on AI is what Simon has to say that really matters and kinda changes the opnion of a lot of ppl.

And for me David looked so mature on that piano. Made the whole thing look so good and if we think about it this week he did everything we’ve been asking for: a more contemporary song with a lot of meaning + piano.And of course Angels that we were all dying to have!

For me was perfect and fullfiled all my expetations..if I may say he done more than just fullfilling them! David made an amazing job making a song that we all knew fron utube and making it sound completely diffent on the show!

I loved it!

I have been struggling to reconcile the young David with the one we know now. This performance is a great bridge because here he is starting to lose his “baby face” and transition to his current good looks.(understatement, I know, just can’t find the words at the moment.)

I truly believe David has a divine purpose on our earth; and that his incredible good looks are another gift intended to aid him in delivering his message to the world.

Please help! I’m new to iTunes and when I opened your link to your Imagine remaster, I opened it with iTunes.

While it was playing, I dragged it into my David playlist. I was able to play it for a couple of days, but when I went back to play it just now, there was a message that says that the “song could not be used because the original file can not be found”

I was a lost Arch Angel, and now I am found. Seriously, was I the only one who did the self-exile by cutting off the internet for the ENTIRE afternoon to avoid finding out what he’s going to sing? When the top 8 was introduced, DA came out first and I was wondering why he was wearing a beautiful white shirt, so simple yet so elegant. Then in the pre-performance video, he said there were a FEW SONGS he thought of singing! Other mortals have trouble with finding a voice or finding themselves, but no, with DA, his trouble is there are too many songs at his disposal! Awesome! The understated confidence! I loved it.

I nearly fell off my chair when he mentioned Angels. Then came the grand performance: The grand beautiful bright white light, the grand piano, the grand lyrics, and then came the grand voice. For the first time, I didn’t burst out with laughter of joy. Instead, I cried, but not with tears of joy, but with the simple realization that, my god: this is what music is all about.

Agreed with Lucid, the piano playing took his vocal strength away. Same with ADIP.

And, pls pls D, don’t play the piano singing Angels at the finale, unless you are very confident about it. jmo

Not crazy about the slowed version of Angels. He could have just sung the song in its original tempo and repeat the chorus twice, and put more edge into it, way better. Still amazing though. and yes, it was too short, it needed time to build up just like YTV. Must say his voice keeps sounding better and better. Pronunciation’s improving as well.

Overall, everyone looked and sounded tired. Can’t wait for the studio recording. Till then, Angels going to be on repeat.

Jason did well tonight. However, why hasn’t anyone critiqued Jason’s noisy breathing? Just wondering.

They have mozilla firefox at work, and I usually go to google and type in the site, then click on the link, instead of typing it in myself, that way it doesn’t come up if you click on the arrow on top, next to “go”.

I’m new to this forum. I’ve been reading a lot of your posts for awhile now and had to start posting to let you know how comforting it is to find a forum with an older fan base who has ODD like me! I loved David’s angelic performance tonight. He never ceases to amaze me with his risk taking, maturity, and humility. The way he positioned himself immediately following his performance in front of the judges and stood there calmly ready to take blows was amazing. I have such respect for him. DA FTMFW! I like the piano. I take it as the first time he played it. I don’t count that half a song.
There were a lot of people who didn’t know he plays an instrument until tonight, and they were impressed even more.

I do agree though he shouldn’t do it too often,(which he doesn’t) but tonight was a perfect night for it.

When one is up, the other is equally down and vise versa. But that kind of scares me though because if they are sharing the same fan pool, then when one goes home, the other should get the majority of the left over votes….I hope that doesn’t happen, that could spell big trouble for our David.

The Archuleta love on this site is a disgrace. The kid is a bore, no doubt about it. At least with Michael Johns you have someone who is willing to try different stuff, vary it a bit.

Archuleta can only sing the slow songs, and when he has tried to liven it up a bit he has screwed up (a la Stevie Wonder). Give me soemone who is at least going to take a chance and is a great performer rather than this boring, average talent. I have more stage presence. Yawn…..

I ranked them as they sang tonight, and my bottom 4 were:
- Carly
- Syesha and Jason (tied – I’m not getting the Jason love tonight either)
- David Cook (Something must have been wrong with him, because he’s always so consistent … I thought he was hands down the worst of the night. No-one was even close! I hope he’s feeling OK.)

Our little LN was the best, and I hope he gets some rest. It will be nice to see him happy and smiling tomorrow night.

Today, my husband and my 8 year old son and myself watched the show together. Surprisingly, we were not much impressed with Jason though it is a better perf than the last several weeks. All three of us LOVED David A. And that is a big thing coming from my husband, as he does not watch the show regularly. My son of course does not like any of the girls Our ratings were 1. David A. 2. Kristy 3. Jason 4. Michael
Oh and by the way, I have been voting constantly for David A with 2 phones.
Dial Idol can be a bit misleading, as it only records the folks who use DialIdol, dont you think? And since it measures the busy signal, it might be more misleading, as I am not getting a busy (just got the busy for the first 10 mins)…anyway VOTE, VOTE, VOTE …

If DC is in the bottom three, look for a HUGE surge next week. His fans will rally, as Jason’s are doing tonight. Although Jason was charming and chose the right arrangement for him, I’m such a fan of Iz and his silky voice, that I wasn’t feeling it.

As for the piano, I will steal from a few others here and say that it as a brilliant move. Yes, we who know David and his voice inside out, heard some pitch or vocal issues (we should all be so lucky to have those issues), in the beginning. And yes, you can blame the piano for being a distraction and because he had to sit, cutting off some diaphragm movement. But for what it took away, it made up for 10-fold with the general viewing audience.

He looked like a man, a musician, an artist…He exuded and air I haven’t seen from him yet, except maybe for Imagine. But that look on his face when he started the chorus and looked at the audience…the casual viewer saw that and saw an American Idol.

I also think he was so thrilled to sing that song on that stage…he was just marvelous…

MJ: “dream on” MJ, dream on! Seriously, at 29, does he look like an “aging” bar lounge singer? The clothes were tight showing off an unfit body and the mannerisms were old and tired.

Syesha: the only thing I get from her song choices the last few weeks is: never mind who I am, just look at me, look at me, I can sing Whitney, I can sing Fantasia. When the songs are greater than you, you gotta go!

KLC: she is the only one who took the “joke” that she’s still around seriously and owned it. I gave her props for that, but still forgettable.

Jason: decent performance; does the “guitar” seem to get smaller and smaller by the week? Hey Jason, do you have a “shrinkage” problem?

DC: posturing, posturing, and more posturing. He was so into his own self-importance that you’re left with: huh? what’s that song about? “Pompous” by Simon was right.on.the.money.

Carly: the show must go on…without her!

Brooke: this is where I thought the “emotional tears” were more of the I-think-this-song-is-so-good-and-I-will-make-people-cry-by-first-crying-myself-so-they-get-it. But I still didn’t get it. Pleasant, but awkward, as in why all the tears, what was that about?

DA: The grand performance, with the grand center stage, grand piano, grand song, and a grand voice. The only thing understated is DA’s demeanour. Perfectionately grand! This is what music is all about.

Shelly: You can’t believe the intensity of not knowing and the surprise when it does come! I remember back when Imagine was sung, I was totally unaware of what he was going to sing and when he did, it blew me away. And this is why I thought DC was doing well with Hello and Billie Jean: it’s the surprise element of the unexpected. If DA can somehow keep his song choices to himself and people not leak them, the effect and power it has will be overwhelm, because he has a GREAT GRAND VOICE.

Lucid: thanks for your kind words. You know, I grew up a science geek, and unfortunately, did not have the opportunity to take on ANY artistic endeavours, and so whenever I am touched by music like I have been with DA, the only way I can express it is in words. I can’t seriously know the pitch from the fork, but I learn to be creative in describing my feelings with words to make up for the lack of understanding of music. As you know, the best instrument of music and the best way of human communication is through our voices and DA is so so so so so so special with his gift. Next to the voice, my favorite instrument is the piano. I really admire people like you Lucid, who are so musical and artistic. At the end of the day, though, we all try to connect with each other and music, to me, is one of the best way to do it, and with DA’s voice and his playing the piano (!), I am doubly blessed to be exposed to all that he is. Thank you Lucid for bringing your input to us too.

FRIENDS! What a night! Couldn’t call it quits without checking in. We had 8 people over for a David love fest – it’s great to have the support – we are in Utah after all!! All voting as much as possible for those who can’t!

daisawesome, loved your critique. Right on! It seems so obvious when David opens his mouth that he has miles and miles more talent than all of the others. That doesn’t quite say it even. Others have good voices, David himself is an inspiration.

And did anyone else think that his was the only really true inspirational song of the night? What the heck was Cook singing? I didn’t understand a word.

He was so brilliant, even though he had so much on his mind. He looked so nervous talking to Ryan – twisting hands, shaking foot. His lips were dry and he needed to lick them, but he didn’t, thinking someone would criticize him. (That sign may have been my favorite part of the whole performance!!) And tired – I forgave Paula her ridiculous dress and non-gushing for telling him to get some sleep.

Can’t wait to hear him when none of these stresses are on him and he truly knows how much he is FREAKIN’ ADORED!!

It’s so unnecessary! You’re doing it b/c the others are doing it. You’re doing it b/c you can. But it doesn’t add anything to your performance! It’s gimmicky.

Besides, you look awkward and not as comfortable as when you’re just singing w/ a mike.

O.M.G. I have barely come back down to earth after that heavenly trip David took all of us on. I was already so ecstatic for Angels and was an excited but nervous wreck waiting for him throughout the whole show… and then when I saw that piano on the stage I literally started screaming and hyperventilating!!!!! I cannot believe I got two of my biggest Archie wishes fulfilled on the same night!!!!!!

Tonight was nothing short of BRILLIANT. I agree that David seems a little more focused when performing without the piano – but everything about tonight was still so beautiful and amazing and I could not have asked for more. I love, love, love David and my heart is just so filled with joy and happiness for and because of him right now. Nothing can bring me down from my ODD-induced high!!!! Nothing!!!

I cannot wait for the studio version. Like odd_anne said earlier, I will be playing that until I die… already have the MP3 on repeat!!! The only thing I’m frustrated about is it seems the earliest we’ll be able to download the studio recording is Thursday night since the results show is a day later than usual. DANG IT!!! I will be shaking in anticipation until then, but at least we have the gorgeous MP3 and video to hold us over until then!!!!

Definitely the strongest performance tonight. The rest, I shall not comment lest I am labelled being bias.

As for “with piano or without piano”,firstly I am a big big fan of DA at the piano coz I love the musician side of him. I still watch his “A Thousand Miles” video.

Granted, performing with an instrument takes away some of your concentration and restricts movements but I love that DA did it tonight. I thought it showed his tenderness and vulnerability.

But I also agree that DA doesnt need to do this all the time, unlike some people lately ….. not naming anyone.

Mariah week? For DA, her older songs would be better? Hmmm….is she singing “Touch my body”? I stop here.

David was freakin’ BRILLIANT again! I personally loved that he played the piano and thought he looked very confident and comfortable there (if a little tired), but JMO…

I admit that She’s good and all, but can her performance be any angrier? It was like she was in a different week, having a theme of her own.
I mean, its inspiration week for crying out loud.

And yes, I know that maybe in one way or another the song may have inspired her or other people for that matter, but the way she performed it was kinda off.

Having said that, she really has good vocals and would be a bit disappointing if she got the boot this early. I am not her fan, but i admit that She’s the best female contestant remaining in the competition.

Having said that, I still think that if she’s out this week, America may have been correct with the decision.

Morning to all on day two of our triple-Archie-love-week. Some comments:

GoDavid #220, thanks for sharing the great pic of Archie with David Hernandez. Love seeing that bit of fun personality in our LN. I miss that in these shorter shows with rushed clips and interviews.

Lucid #239, this is coming from a non-musician, but the musical moment you described (change in wings unfold) is one I felt emotionally. Makes me realize just how gifted he is (and you) musically.

Koko #240, I noticed that he was aware of the crowd’s reaction, enjoying it. Just another thing I love about him.

Legolas #313, I LOVE hearing his lower register in Shop Around and I believe his voice *is* deepening as we watch. How is it possible for his voice/person to get sexier? (And do the other contestants realize they’re glad he isn’t 22 already?)

And as to the piano discussion. I was on the idolforums boards earlier yesterday and the man who arranged/accompanied a few of David’s younger performances was on. He asked the fans if they felt that it was necessary for David to get behind the piano again. The feelings were mixed, but most said they would enjoy it. I think tonight’s piano-playing was strategic. David’s probably aware of the fact that he’s a vocalist rather than a pianist. I think if he does the song again, he’ll leave the piano-playing to the studio players.

I’m glad he played, however. I think Sof #362 was right when she said that most casual viewers aren’t going to analyze this so heavily. They’ll just remember that he accompanied himself.

I think what you write, but as a mother, I can be immensely proud without pulling it apart. Thanks for appreciating and emphasizing my comment about that, ml. I don’t want to sound like I’m admonishing people, but constructive critiques about the pro’s and con’s of D’s performances (which Lucid and many others engage in regularly) are very different than using pejoratives and name-calling to try and evoke a negative emotional response. Many of us are very sensitive about and protective of David, so just don’t be ambushed by people wanting to draw you into a silly fight!

I don’t have time to read all the posts.. but did ANYbody notice he did the “sign”??? Hand over heart? I about died when I saw that and was so sure people would be going ballistic over that!

I loved his singing, but honestly thought he coudl have done better w/o the piano. He seemed nervous and had to hold back on some parts. Some parts, I could see him bouncing in his chair while playing, like he wanted to show more emotion w/his body and arms, and I felt that too. It’s harder to show the emotion w/the piano in the way. But, I still absolutely loved it… the more I watch it, the better it gets too.

Can’t WAIT for the studio version!!! Awesome!

Hey Virginia5…I think I said this on here last night, but I was delirious, so I can’t remember!

I agree that he held back a bit, probably because of the piano. But I think that strategically, it was brilliant…the comments, even from critics show that it legitimized him. Yes, we all know he’s uber-talented and is a musician. But last night he LOOKED the part. Once he started the chorus, he looked older, more confident, artistic, etc…I think a lot of casual fans took notice.

It helped that his was the clearly superior performance of the night. It was so professional.

But I think that when he gets to the final three (when WE get him there)…he should sing it again, standing. He’ll have longer to sing it, he can BELT IT OUT and give another fabulous (albeit different performance).

I love your comments…you always have such intelligent things to say! I always find myself commenting to you (at you? with you? IDK)

Piano or no piano discussion: It does definitely make him look more experienced I think and it changes up his performance from just standing there and singing – not that any of us would mind that. But you do have to be really comfortable with playing and singing in order to do it well. I think he mostly just plays chords. I know he can play a little more complicated than that, but I don’t think he is really accomplished. If he wants to grow into it, he can, but I would prefer the pure singing. It’s such a gift.

i have realized that not most people here are familiar with the ‘angel’ song by robbie williams, well, not until david sang it.

there are some UK/irish bands with very good repertoire that david archuleta might someday cover, and i could imagine more than a dozen that will suit his style perfectly, and these are alternative bands that transcends soul, pop, rock and indie music. if only david would be familiar with them. i back-packed through europe for five years and i find it interesting that most of the great songs there (that are in existence for years and years) never reach here in the US. robbie williams for example is a big artist in the UK. maybe we just have different taste in music. but i like indie music, the sort of rock-alternative stuff, and yet, here i am – amazed at what david archuleta can sing – on any given day, i would not listen to the songs he previosuly sang, but now that he sang it – dang it! it reached me.

what is it people?

frankly, my favorite i think so far (sans ‘imagine’ – because it’s on a league of its own) would be ’smoky mountain memories’ – it moved me, maybe because (like david) it reminded me of home, and how i have been travellin’ around searching for that ‘air of gold dust’ – made me miss my smoky mountains – dang it! and i don’t even like country music. and i never even used to say ‘dang it!’ before!

It’s David’s ability to touch our soul through his singing. He sings soul to soul and makes every song extremely personal to those who have the sensitivity and ears to listen. Personally, while Imagine was brilliant perfection, I was more moved by LAWR and SMM because they meant things to me.

That is what true artists do – help the reader, viewer or listener have a personal emotional experience. So while, yeah, maybe he was not on on all of his notes last night, in the end, it doesn’t matter. The effect on the listener is profound and something that won’t ever go away.

1. getting obsessed with a 17-yo kid (well, not kid anymore technically) – i’m straight as an arrow mind you and if my mates found out about all these i’m dead as in ***** dead!

2. i don’t get involved on internet threads, or even bash or reply back to comments and stuff, mostly i laugh at comments like youtubes and stuff (frankly i just stumbled upon the rickey site), and yet now i can get too rapt on this DA thing.

3. you usually see me with a surf board, now you see me with a surfboard and a laptop. in most cases on some obscure coffee shop (with wi-fi) in baja….

4. i have never participated in a live blogging (or sumthin’ – whatever you call ‘em last night on fanblast! where they give live feeds!) – but i needed to yesterday cause i was stranded in the south without a telly (only my laptop and a wi-fi shop) – i felt like i needed a fix of AI and DA. LOL!

5. i don’t ever say ‘dang it!’ ‘love nugget’ or ‘porkchop’ – not in front of my mates!

my world has drastically changed in a month’s time. i just don’t understand. i don’t think it’s a midlife crisis, i’m way too young for it.

1) did Paul have a date after the show or something? I mean, those humongous “chihuahuas” were practically jumping out from under her dress.

2) DC was posing so much I thought he was auditioning for the next America’s Top Model…ewwww.

3) Heavyblow: using the piano is not a gimmick. It adds another layer to the complexity that is DA. Writing messages on your hand like DC did WAS a gimmick.

4) Mariah and DA in the same room next week: my, I can see her throwing a tantrum when all the attention will shift to DA when he enters the room. Oh, the drama! It will be simply divalicious!!!! I can’t wait.

Sorry, don’t know if anybody answered b/c I’ve been out all morning.

He did the SIGN right before he stood up from his seat (after the song). Look again! It was very obvious.. but the camera was panned away. I know he did it for his fans! I just want to die!

Sof… I too love your comments! I feel we agree a lot! I’m so glad he’s gotten good criticism.. I haven’t had the chance to read any of them. And I do agree with you that he MUST sing this again when he gets to the final 3 (is that the show?) where they get to pick their favorite and sing it again.. hopefully the full length version. I was debating last night between this and Imagine, and I think he did Imagine SO well that he shouldn’t do it again. A full length of Angel would be much more emphatic and dramatic and would really set him apart.

After checking data usage, averaged 14 votes per minute on the ATT text multiply x3 plus land line I feel comfortable we made a dent. There is a conclusion I have come to though. The support for David is very obvious here and at other sites. All the idols have their diehard fans as noted at various sites but David obviously has the majority. The one fact that should not be overlooked is the voting public that does not follow the forums and fansites. The majority of votes probably come from these people and it is very obvious that they love David and have kept him on top. This can be seen for example, on the DialIdol stats when you see such a dramatic up and down ranking based on how well each individual performed that week. Who would have expected Kristi to rank 3 and Carly and Syesha ranked in the bottom 2. I think this shows how well David has consistently performed and the overall impact he has made on the American people as a whole. There will always be the few negative naysayers but they don’t represent the majority. I would be proud for any of my kids to say David Archuleta is their role model.

I rewatched the end again, and he MOST DEFINITELY put his hand over his heart.. it was for a good 3 seconds!!! I made the original post in the AI forums, and half the people thought it was a shadow, or didn’t see it at all. We have a big screen tv so I don’t know if that’s why I see it, but it’s pretty darn obvious either way.

I’m SOOO touched that he did the sign.. the way he kept it there for THAT long clearly means he was giving love back to his fans!!! I’m teary eyed!

I totally loved this performance yesterday. I loved it even more because he changed it from what he had performed before. I thought the piano gave him an edge, even if it caused it did get a teensy weensy rough on a couple of notes. But after listening to it several times, I LOVE it because of those little imperfections!

Anyway, I voted like crazy yesterday with two cell phones, and thought I got in 1300+ votes. I know lots of you out there got in tons of votes as well. And here is the good news. ZABASEARCH has him listed as the one with the highest number of votes. Normally, it is like David and Jason, or the two Davids got the most votes. But this time it is:

It’s interesting how some women use glitters around their eyes to enhance their expressions, as with KLC, or paint them with overwhelming mascara, like with Carly, but with DA, his expressive eyes didn’t need any enhancements. I wonder what make his eyes so expressive? Is it the almond shape of them? The long lashes? The droopy outer corners of the eyes? The shimmering sparkles when he smiles? Or the attentiveness that they give you when he stares straight into the camera at you? Or is it because we all see some sort of reflections of parts of ourselves through his eyes that make it so easy to connect with him?

Gosh, some of the people over on the AI boards are so negative about the sign! OK, you had to bring up the hair and eyes?? Come on, have you no mercy??!!? I was going to mention to Lucid he needs to get whatever shiny stuff they put on David’s hair to make it glitter when he gets the new do.

When angel was talking to Ryan, it was just a little breath-taking to take in the glow of the hair AND the eyes. And we know that the sparkling eyes are completely natural. I think it is just his incredible spirit shining through, the light that is his soul radiating from within.

I think tonight is going to put us all over the edge again-he’s going to look/sound so delicious!

My daughter (the 18 yr old Nugget) just called and asked me for the password that I put on American Idol on my DVR because she heard at school that David Angel was off the hook! She then told me I was crazy to put the lock on the show, but it’s because she DELETED everything from YTV backward. But she loved his performance, so I forgave her.

I have no idea if that is grammatically correct up there because I am not proof reading it

Testing today, I got to come home early!

More David for me!

David had the perfect amount of technical training and passion in his voice. Of course, you can’t be a great singer just with the passion. It’s not very angelically pleasing to hear someone cry at you. You have to know what to do with your voice, and David has an amazing technical skill.

You can’t really become great without both elements, and David is superb in combining technicalities with emotion.

For a while I was a little pessimistic, I thought that David Cook would win. Now I have a strange feeling that it couldn’t possibly end like that. I have a strong feeling that David will win.

I haven’t read all posts since last night. Just want to drop a quick note of sudden realization that came to me just now. Our David reminds me Tiger Wood a lot. They are very different personality wise. But their respective talent and the focus and determination in their pursuit of perfection for their art is very much the same. When they are in their game (golf and music), they can just totally tune out the world and get into the zone no matter the pressure and mad crowd around them. Every time I see David’s face when he is hitting and holding the high notes, it reminds me the same intensity I see in Tiger when he needs to make the most crucial putts. I see the same greatness in Tiger that’s in David. They both have gift to empower people.

I just feel that David last night fullfilled everyone wishes with only one performance. Angels, piano, amazing runs ( Randy had asked him to do it after TLAWR) and the sign for us!!!!

And I totally agree with everyone… David is a whole new experience for me. I’ve never quite understood how some ppl could get so obcessed by a singer or this kinda of stuff. But now I totally do! ODD it’s just the most perfect thing.Look what this has done. Here on rickey’s we have created a family that only seems to get bigger as the days go by. And better too!!!

I just wanted David to know the power that he has. He joined together this family that has members from all ages and all over the world. And we are here supporting not only him but supporting each other.Helping and praying for those who need.This is really especial and I’m really trully happy to be a part of all this!

Only have time to stop by for a few minutes, but just wanted to see what was going on in the Archie world!! It’s the morning after and I am still up in the clouds. David’s performance was incredible, moving, inspirational, and just flat out lovely last night and I am so excited to see him again tonight!!! In all of the excitement I totally forgot that he’ll be in full-on white tonight as well (at least for part of the show)!! Ahh!!! How can we handle it?? And did I hear Ryan say last night also that the Idols will be manning the phone lines for donations?? Could you just imagine how amazing it would be to talk to David himself?? That voice is just about as gorgeous even when he’s just talking!!!!

BabyDavid – I’ve just been listening to the MP3 of Angels that Rickey put up from the live version last night. I don’t have the studio version or anything yet LOL. I am so antsy to get it though, I can barely concentrate on all the things I really need to be doing!!! haha!

Just have to agree with you all that David really went to a higher level last night – playing the piano and singing like that, all so beautifully, made him look and sound the part of the incredible musician and artist we all know him to be. I too loved his quiet, unassuming but definitely present confidence and everything about him just made him look like a star. I’m praying he’ll do an encore of Angels for the Top 3 or Finale because I really feel like it’s my favorite performance of his so far.

Can’t wait for 7:30 tonight!!! (Don’t forget the show starts a littler earlier folks!) About 6 more hours to go for me!

Hi to all David’s supporters. Just like you, I have learned to love David’s music and great personality since I heard him singing Heaven during the Hollywood week. There was no stopping me from thereon in convincing my relatives and friends in the USA to vote for David in my behalf. I tried to post a comment in another thread last night but I gueess it got drowned by all the excitement you guys were experiencing as you anxiously wait for the show to start.
I’d been monitoring this site for the last two weeks and your dedication to David is just amazing. Can I hang around here? I used to post comments in the I. F. … but I could no longer stand staying there. David’s haters were just throwing insults left and right…not only to him to his supporters as well. I like it here…except for very very few naysayers, love for david is just so abundant as I go through all your posts. This is the place I’d been looking for to put into words my great admiration for this great young man.
David did a fantastic job last night. He was just so good there is no doubt in my mind he is going to win this whole competition. (whew! now, I was able to say that without anticipating a madly attack from the supporters of other contestants. what a relief!)

David was decent, but his version isn’t up to Robbie’s quality. Honestly, it would be hard for any decent singer to screw up this amazing song.

If David could break the mold on his formulaic, boring performances & put some REAL emotion into his songs (not just what his dad or the idol handlers tell him he’s supposed to feel)…then he might really have something. Don’t know what I mean? Go find the RW version where he’s singing live @ Knebworth…that’s an emotional connection.

Side note 1…I LOVED the shot of the girl in the audience with the LICK THOSE LIPS sign. Priceless.

Side note 2…if you loved this song, check out another great song by Robbie called Feel. Again, the live Knebworth version is great (esp @ the end).

My opinion of this cutie:
He’s safe this week. Well, the only concern for David Archuleta is the post teen/child star effect. You know Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Jessica Simpson, Britney Spears, Micheal Jackson, Hilary Duff, Danny Bonaduce, and some other formaer child stars? They started off as child stars or teen stars possibly, and then they became troublemakers. I’m concerned for Archy boy (David Archuleta), the Jonas brothers and many other teen/child stars cuz of that case, but otherwise I think DArchuleta should be ok.
