Am I the only one who thought Simon was way out of line with the clothing comment? I thought that not only did she nail that song, she looked very cute in her outfit. That was just mean, I don’t think it’s his place to criticize her clothing choice..err that just made me made. Poor Carly she looked so sad/embarrassed.

Beautiful, I loved it! I’ve never heard it slow like that. As for Simon, you are always telling Paula it’s a singing contest so take your own advice and stick to judging the performance not what they look like.

Remember when Simon would pick on Jennifer Hudson’s outfits week after week? She seems to have done O.K. Simon really has no room to talk about how someone dresses. His outfits are basically the same, kinda boring.

Really enjoyed it. She has a nice tone, you can hear her accent in it. It might not have been the best choice- hard to say when there are 3000 songs to choose from- but I liked hearing something soft from her.
Tiny agreement with Simon on the outfit, though. She looked pretty, but the red pants were not flattering. The rest of it worked just fine.

her voice was spot on. but still somehow i am just not connected with the emotion of the song. it was still all about her vocal and its stylization. she didn’t sell *the song.*

and simon was so right about the clothing. gahhh. when does this girl ever gonna get it?

For me she was as she usually is: spot on with vocals but lacking the necessary emotion.

I think Simon was trying to help her with the clothing comment.

Love her voice, but I just don’t connect with her. My thing with the clothing is that she is always in a halter-style top and seems to really try to show off the tat at every opportunity. We actually have a poll where I work and we are betting on when she will wear something that covers her arms. I have nothing against tats, but it’s sort of hard to concentrate on her singing with it glaring out at me. I think my attention becomes fixated on what else is there besides that picture of the woman on her arm…

I agree with the people who say that she somehow detaches from the song, despite the talented voice. She just doesn’t connect for me, and she looks like she’s trying so hard; her faces look strained and concentrated, instead of just letting the music flow out of you.

Simon seems to be done with Carly as she appears to have NO chance at winning. Even though she sang beautifully, the criticism was questionable this evening. I think she is being thrown under the bus!

I also feel that Simons’ public rebuke of Carlys’ warddrobe was a statement against the consistent “tattoo advertising” for the most part. She manages to showcase that right arm each & every week no matter the nature or mood of the song she’s performing & it IZ distracting! She should occasionally consider covering up the arms.

#06– IDOL08— Clay did a lovely, slowed-down version of HERE YOU COME AGAIN– on his last album– A THOUSAND DIFFERENT WAYS.

I actually liked Carly’s performance this week. Thought it showed off her voice to its best light.

And while her outfits are not outstanding, it does bother me that Simon will always point out the female’s choice of attire and not what the male contestants choose to wear (although he did zing Clay for his red leather jacket for his GREASE performance).

I don’t get it. I thought she did a great job. I do agree with Simon, she really needs to cover the tattoo…America will not vote her to win showing those off. The American public in general is very superficial and agree or not.

I’m not sure the wardrobe comment had to do with the tattoo necessarily (although it is kind of ugly). I just don’t think she wears clothes that is flattering to her body. Every week she wears those ridiculous baby dresses and leggings.

Syesha and Kristy Lee might be able to pull off the skin-tight stuff. Carly needs a new stylist.

Carly was really good. Not great. Her voice is amazing/strong/recognizable. She will be a great recording artist. Her problem right now is her performance. She IS trying to hard… That is totally translating to lack of confidence bordering on an identity crisis. Reign it in Carly! Just be the bitch you were born to be and everyone will like and respect you for it!

I don’t think the clothing criticism was focused on her tattoo. Honestly, she dresses like it’s 1980 most of the time. There was nothing remarkable about her clothes tonight, other than they did absolutely nothing for her.

I am not a tattoo sort of person, but I actually find the contrast between her singing style (belter, power ballads, romantic songs) and the edginess of a tattoo very refreshing.

I thought this was beautifully done. I’m not quite sure what it is that makes a connection difficult for so many people. This gave me chills at one point, and I’d say that was a connection for me anyway. I hope Simon doesn’t break her spirit. He could have presented his critique of her style of dress in a more constructive way. And, I don’t think the camera needed to scan her body. How humiliating. I was so captivated by her singing that I was oblivious to what she was wearing.

His criticism did seem pretty hard on Carly and she looked so hurt. Saying your voice sounded off in front of millions is one thing. Saying you don’t dress well is another. Embarrassing!

Very nice vocal. I’m not a Carly fan, but she sang that song very well.

OLS ~ Comparing anyone to J-Hud in the clothing department is definitely not a compliment. She dressed atrociously on the show and still makes some weird wardrobe decisions. I don’t think her success post-AI was because of her wardrobe on AI, if anything it was in spite of it.

Saw a debate about Idol in the local paper and one of the authors asked if they couldn’t get Carly to wear a long sleeved shirt….funny!

She did the right thing moving the song away from Dolly’s uptempo version. This performance. had emotion and in some ways may be better styled for the lyrics. I liked it better listening to it when I didn’t have to see her though.

I actually thought I would love this performance. But after I heard that she picked a song that Dolly didn’t even write ‘to further her career’, I couldn’t help but think people might misconstrue it. Bad editing? Tactless? Oh, Carly…you make it hard to like you.

That’s b/c Carly took it *personally*, when Simon never really means it that way, even if it does come across harsh.

He is giving her *advice*, albeit in a very curt way. He thinks (rightly or not) that what he sees is what the general public would perceive.

This is a show about showing your star potential/quality, not about being up there and dress like you’re going to a friend’s midnight get together.

Simon commented on the tattoo? ha! I like the tattoo, and I’m sure she just figures it’s free marketing of their shop week after week. But it is kind of distracting. I once dated a guy whose entire arm was a dragon tattoo, and I felt like I was dating an arm with a guy attached to it—very odd, definitely distracting.

These contestants have all the resources available to them to bring their image up to star quality – they should take advantage of them. Carly always looks like she’s going to the mall. Simon does comment on the men – he told Taylor Hicks that he didn’t like his attire when he came out with the leather jacket. In most seasons, we see a transformation of the contestants, especially with the girls. I’m surprised that the stylists haven’t done more to improve her image.

This song for her was absolutely mesmorizing and I can’t get enough of it. As for Eva Avila’s version, she made it sound so much like Dolly’s version and she’s not that great of a singer, so I’m not impressed. And Clay Aiken… I love him, but his version was very boring. Carly’s is definitely the best and she made it her own.

She may struggle at performing but I think she’s a great recording vocalist. I will definitely be buying her cds!

what’s wonderful about her is..(well, at least for me ). She make me love the song that she is singing. I really have no idea about Dolly parton song..I just know 2 tracks from her. One when she did a duet with Norah Jones and I Will Always Love You.
