The Worsters are livid after Carly Smithson said this in the March 4 American Idol Q&A:

What??? How could Carly Smithson say such a thing? How evil! What has Sanjaya Malakar done to you Carly Smithson? Sanjaya Malakar only brought joy and inspiration to the world! He’s the most talked about American Idol contestant EVER. He had the most dedicated fans on the American Idol tour last summer. Girls cried in his presence! Sanjaya Malakar was the talk of the town during the White House Correspondents Dinner — the governor of New York wanted his autograph. He totally upstaged everybody that night.

You were already bringing me to your side Carly! I’ve even formed a fan club over here for you — and it was such a cool name: The Rickey Smiths!

Are you retaliating against me too for spreading the word on the Internet that before American Idol, you had signed a contract with a major label MCA Records — who spent $2.2 million in producing and promoting your CD — but it flopped selling only 378 copies — and it was such a major flop that the Wall Street Journal wrote a front page article on it — and that you lied on TV by saying that the reason your CD flopped was that the record company “imploded”, which is not true because MCA was only absorbed into Geffen Records 2 years after your CD came out — and that you had worked with Sheryl Crow — and that one of the tracks on your CD “Just Missed The Train” was also recorded by Kelly Clarkson in her own debut CD — and that Randy Jackson was the VP of A&R at MCA Records when your were signed there, which should be grounds for your disqualification but you’re still around for some reason — and that your first single “I Wanna Blow Your Mind” is a song about blow jobs???

Fear the Malakar!!! Fear the Rickey!!! My first impression of Carly was “snake in the grass,” and her actions fully support that view. She may have a nice voice, but as a package, she is far less than admirable. Sanjaya, on the other hand, is the real deal.

I’m not the biggest fan of Carly, but I think it’s very clear what her reasoning was for picking that as her favourite moment. If you still haven’t worked it out it’s obviously about singing ability. Like her or not, she can sing and she’s damn good at it. Sanjaya on the other hand..well I don’t like to be negative.

But that would be my interpretation that It was clearly the opinion of a skillful vocalist.

You could also look at it in another way. It has been noted that Carly has motherly instincts and comforts other contestants when needed. She may have been relieved that Sanjaya was spared further criticism and humiliation by the judges and pundits on the television. After being voted off, he was able to better show the side of him that people fell in love with. Come on…Vote for the Worst supported him because they felt he was the worst. They are not your friends, Rickey! Don’t let them use you and bring you down. Please don’t turn into Vote for the Worst II. You’re so much better than that!

Even if she felt that it is hurtful to his fans, his mother, and just ridiculous to point out as a favorite moment. Why would his being voted OFF bring her such joy?? Hataz in this world are unreal! Remember water seeks its own level.
Remember everything Sanjaya said after he was voted off. Totally classy and always positive.

We fanjayas know he has talent. We know he can sing and we like they way he does it. We know he impressed on the tour.

We also know that despite millions poured into her CD Carly was unable to sell her way out of a paperbag.

I suspect she knows how to make an outrageous statement viral. Just put the word Sanjaya into an article and it spreads. Ask jeffreychrist.

I think I know which one will be part of a trivia question in ten years: “Whatever happened to _____?”

Carly’s comment makes me like her more. Sanjaya’s “fame” isn’t based on talent, but on his looks and perceived vulnerability. I was actually happier when Carmen Rasmussen, Corey Clark, and Constantine were voted off, but there’s plenty of awful contestants to choose from. Sanjaya’s elimination is a perfectly legitimate “favorite Idol moment.”

As ealbino said, 6 years of Idol and that’s your favorite moment? Pretty hard to put a good face on that.

That being said, I have never been able to fully understand the idea that Sanjaya is a good singer. Or by what standard someone could come to that. He just really doesn’t have a performance on TV, in concert, or even in a local coffeehouse quality voice!

THAT being said, he is remarkable in that he has used grace, class, a lovely attitude, and a winning smile to parlay his appearance on American Idol into something that lives beyond the show. It’s really nice…and rare.

It also shows to go you that talent doesn’t always carry the day if you have a foul attitude or for whatever reason just don’t connect with people. I have a feeling that Carly may come to regret that statement, and may live to see her musical hopes crash again.

I understand the feeling when someone you really don’t like finally goes. But in the 6 years of the show you might expect a vocalist to have a favorite moment when a performer just wowed them, gave them chills, made them grin with the execution, and soul that singer brought to the song. There have been those moments on Idol.

And the other consideration is, if you’re in a very public (millions of viewers/voters) competition, how dumb is it to come with anything negative in that situation? These contestants need to be thinking like politicians right now when they’re interviewed. What you say can help or hurt you.

Carly was dumb.

I agree with posters above-it is just plain stupid to say something like that. If you do not like Sanjaya-that is fine-discuss it with people going to your bar or whatever that you are running. But to make that comment and make an entire fan-base (and not any fanbse-Fanjayas at that ) angry? That is plain lack of smartness.
Also what type of person has other person’s misfortune as their highlight? Not an “American Idol” for sure. I had started warming up to her mainly out of sympathy, but now I am going to wait for highlight of THIS season.

I care about Sanjaya just a tad more than I care about Josiah – so it’s obviously not much. That said, it was kinda a dumb comment – was she trying to be funny?
I also like Kelly’s version of “Just Missed the Train” a thousand times better than Carly’s. If it makes ya’ll feel good, apparently Carly’s only the 3rd most popular female contestant (behind Ramiele and Brooke). I just don’t think she connects very well.

How closely did Carly even follow AI? If she wasn’t a regular viewer, Sanjaya’s elimination may really stick out in her mind because it was highly publicized, and it was well-known that Sanjaya was not a strong contestant. If Carly has watched every season and really paid attention, I would think it reasonable to choose another moment. But if she were only a casual viewer, I wouldn’t expect her to have any favorite “good” moments. It’s usually the awful and embarrassing moments that get the most publicity on this show.

Even if you enjoyed Sanjaya’s time on the show, citing a ‘breath of fresh air’ or ‘he was different and unique’, it was BY FAR the low point of any AI to date. His vocal talent was not nearly as good as the people around him. He was a great ‘performer’ and put on an interesting show.
As far as Carley making this comment, and it offending Sanjaya’s fan group…wow….To think someone would put that there with malice is far beyond me. To me, anyways, it was there to be funny. In time, him going as far as he did on the show, will be cited as the point AI ‘jumped the shark’.

It’s a dumb comment from a singer who is struggling to connect. Why, if she didn’t follow the show would she care if one person or another left? I haven’t followed each year and feel no outrage or joy that anyone in those years left when they did. Why should I? I didn’t follow them.

But she should have realized (and you too) that many people who do follow the show have watched every year. Many people who also liked Sanjaya and were sorry to see him go. They’ll agitate against her, as Rickey is doing right now.

Perhaps she figured she’d win over all the Sanjaya haters who also like to kick people when they are down. I understand the group is surprisingly large.

Internet Observer-yes, I had the same thought that she is trying to win over people who are haters of Sanjaya-but does she think that they are going to pick up the phone and vote for her just because she said that? He is not in the competition-they could care less about this now. She should be more concerned about Fanjayas who might have been voting for her and neutral people who she lost just by coming across as a mean person.

Take a look at the thread on AI boards-so many people who are not Sanjaya fans said that they lost all respect for her. “shakes head”-not a smart move at all.

Most of the people stating they will not vote for Carly anymore probably never were anyway. Least we forget that just a few weeks ago on this very site people were badmouthing her saying she didn’t deserve to be there, ect. It works both ways. I like her ok and maybe it wasn’t a smart comment but all of this negativity is crazy to me after just last week or so on here people were bad mouthing her already before this comment.

Interested Observer, as far as I’m concerned, all the Sanjaya fans are the ones determined to make a “silk purse from a sow’s ear.” If Sanjaya were homely or overweight, they never would have given him a second listen or glance.

I watch AI to enjoy performances by a variety of talented individuals, and when someone is as talented as Carly, or Elliott Yamin, or Carrie Underwood, I’m going to vote for them and support them because it’s a SINGING competition. The winner isn’t going to become my new roommate, for God’s sake. I don’t have to deal with their personalities.

And besides, if Carly is dedicated to singing, it may have been unthinkable to her that someone like Sanjaya got so much attention. Her comment was politically incorrect, but it was honest. I can respect that. If Sanjaya had been a great singer, rather than mediocre, her comment would have been senseless. But Sanjaya just wasn’t that good.

I don’t understand how people automatically assume ‘favorite Idol moment’ needs to be a positive experience? Why can’t it be interpreted as most memorable? ie because I remember Sanjaya being tossed as the most poignant memory I have, it is my favorite. Favorite does necessarily have to be linked with positive connotations.

If we are to take her literally, and thus degrade her character based on this, and declare ‘war’, lets take a look at the term ‘war’ and take that literally…kinda hypocritical, no?

Pallaton, this is a TV show, a competition where the contestants want to win and by winning I do not mean necessarily become the next American Idol.

So yes, they have to censor themselves. They have to think strategically and make a name for themselves and win over fans. They also have to rise above the noise and stand out and be known by people who do not watch AI.

Sanjaya “won” AI last year by those measurements.

But just to be direct: Sanjaya Malakar can sing. Melinda Doolittle, who some of you consider your patron saint of singing, said that Sanjaya could sing. So I hope someone will say that Melinda Doolittle is a poor judge of who could sing or not, because that’s exactly what some of you are saying when you say that Sanjaya can’t sing.

I’m past it at this point. Popular music has been so bad for so long that I’m happy to see ANYone with real talent get some attention. I’m just as emotionally disinterested in Hernandez’s stripping, Danny’s video rantings, and whatever the hullabaloo was about Amanda. If these people can sing and connect with an audience through a song, that’s what matters to me.

I think to truly appreciate the tastelessness and tackiness of her remark, let’s go back TO the night in question. Here is a then-17-year-old kid, who has already endured so much humiliation and garbage from the media for months, but has hung in there week after week, fighting the good fight. People tend to forget that Sanjaya wasn’t voting to keep himself in. It was the fans who kept him advancing, because we loved him and wanted to keep him in as long as possible. There was nothing the kid could do except come out smiling, week after week, and trying to do his best to compete and hang in there. This had been his dream. His may not have been the best voice in the competition. But let’s not forget, it was a GOOD voice and one that I’m sure he had been praised for all his life. So he enters the competition, as all of them do, with high hopes and dreams. He wants to make a better life for himself and his family by winning. If we go back in time to that night, we see a very brave and courageous kid finally giving in to all the strain and pressure. He collapses in tears on Lakish’s shoulder while people in the audience cheer like their favorite team has just scored a touchdown victory. That was heartwrenching to watch. I remember sitting at home and crying right along with him because his pain felt like my own. And now, for another AI contestant to come along and tout that as her “favorite” AI moment is just wrong, tacky and tasteless on so many levels. I don’t think it’s so much his getting eliminated (because that’s just the nature of the show) but it’s seeing what all he endured and knowing he was in such pain and heartbreak at that moment, and for this smirking ugly be-yoth to take pleasure in that and call it her “favorite AI moment” just really makes me hate her. Sorry, but she’s made this personal now. Heck, scroll to the top and look at Sanjaya’s pic, then look at hers. Kinda easy to see who’s the ugly one, right? Well, thing is, it’s not the ugly on the outside that counts, it’s the ugly on the inside. And Carly has proven she’s eat up with it. Yes, the war is on!

Straw man, Brazen. We’re not defending him because we think he’s “a Jesus Christ sandwhich on Wonder Bread”. We think he’s a talented and charismatic kid who got a really raw deal from the show.

He was not the kid that AI and all of his haters made him out to be — totally untalented, unworthy of staying in and unAmerican to boot.

The kind of hate that was heaped on Sanjaya (unlike any I had seen before for contestants on the show) vividly exposed the bigotry that lurks only just beneath the surface of many Americans. That hatred was not just on “the boards”, which could be understandable, but throughout the media.

It was shocking and reflected more poorly on the haters, many of whom did not even follow AI, than on that 17 year old kid.
It did not matter that singing masters like Tony Bennett praised his singing or as Rickey said, people like Melinda. It was okay for newscasters and othr adults on TV to use this kid as a butt of jokes and a way to get their own message heard.

I remember Kelly Ripa used to diss him regularly. Regis was off the show because of heart problems. The first thing he said when he came back was that he liked Sanjaya the best because of his singing. Shut her up.

Dumb move of Carly to bring that back up again.

I am not a Sanjaya fan, although I can understand why so many people love him.

Sanjaya was total sweetheart on the show. He was such a gentleman and he treated his Mom and sister like they were the most precious things in the world to him. It was so touching how he chose not to answer when Ryan asked who the judges thought had a better voice, him or his sister, and it broke my heart when he cried after Shyamali didn’t make it.

These are some of the things that made people embrace Sanjaya and I think that’s awesome.

On the other hand, I can not stand Carly Smithson. To me she comes off as sef-centered, selfish, fake and full of her herself. I don’t like her personality, I don’t like her face,I don’t like her attitude and I don’t like her voice.

For her ‘favorite moment’ to be when someone else’s dreams are crushed, especially since it’s already happened to her, is pure evil.

Ripley, let me get one thing straight. I don’t care if people like Sanjaya or not. But they make it my business when they choose to put it out there on public forums in a mean-spirited way, and how any other way can you slice Carly’s statement? AI contestants are NOT on the same level with the rest of us when it comes to the freedom to go around spouting off “opinions.” AI contestants are all in the same boat together. They are expected to display good conduct and good sportmanship to their fellow contestants, and even if they have opinions (as we all do) those opinions have no business on the boards. And certainly, most especially, NOT while they are still a contestant on the show. I and many others will be cheering and laughing our heads off when Ms. Carly gets the boot. In fact, at my house we’ll be throwing a party. Since it’s okay to celebrate someone’s lowest moment, why not? When she sobs, we’ll all break out the champagne. As the exit song plays, we’ll pitch confetti. That’s the spirit of AI, is it not? And certainly we are “entitled” to do that because it’s our opinion and most of us will be happy to see that day come. I hope by this time next year some new contestant will be quoted as saying their favorite AI moment was seeing “that Carly bitch” go. But sorry, that’s just my “opinion.”

Rickey…I love your blog, but you are going to alienate peopel (including myself) who don’t worship Sanjaya like you do. This is both a popularity contest AND a singing contest. That is why people like Sanjaya can never win AI. The final two are always the best singers of the year.

Also, as a person who has studied music for over 15 years…I believe that Sanjaya should have never been on singing competition show. Of course he can carry a tune (as can 97% of the population)…but he had poor vibrato, a limited range, and no breathing control.

American Idol contestants are supposed to be role models. An idol is someone you look up to because they are impressive, talented or worthy of respect.

When asked her FAVORITE Idol moment, she chooses one where a contestant was eliminated. Not a great performance, not a favorite guest star, not even her making the Top 24 or whatever. It is unfathomable to me that someone in her position would choose to put down another contestant and say that that was her FAVORITE moment.

It is mean. She is mean.

And her entire back story is a LIE. She is a phony and a mean and bitter one at that.

I hope all of you who were voting for her STOP NOW because she is not worthy of your respect. STOP voting for her now and she will not make the Top 7 as Sanjaya did.

This mean and bitter adult woman was given EVERY opportunity to make it but still failed. And then shem, an adult woman, kicks a teenaged boy in the teeth who did his best and did it with kindness and dignity and touched many people with his decency.

Do not give her a second chance because she has NOT earned it.

Jasonziggy, of course VFTW called Sanjaya “the worst.” They also bestowed that honor upon Taylor Hicks, Carrie Underwood, Blake Lewis, Lakisha Jones and many, many others, some of whom would surprise and shock a great many know-it-all’s. FYI, while there may be some posters on VFTW who are truly in it for the joke factor, VFTW is not really about promoting the genuinely “worst” singer. That’s a misconception many have. While I’m not a Worster by any means, I can say that their “agenda,” such as it is, has more to do with AI’s tendency to plant and pimp certain contestants at the expense of others. I guess you could say it’s more about championing the underdog rather then necessarily the worst singer, but I’m not going to take up a full page here to go into it all, as it’s a rather complex issue, but suffice to say, there is more to it than what many perceive on the surface. Furthermore, studying music for 15 years does not an expert make. I could say I’ve “studied” writing for 20 years, but you know, there’s still probably some upstart kid out there who will manage to publish a novel before I do. Being an Idol is a heck of a lot more than just being a proficient singer. I doubt Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger, Joe Cocker, Rod Stewart, Britney Spears,et al (I could go on and on) would have progressed very far on AI either, by those standards. But they all had something that connected them with the masses, regardless. Sanjaya has that quality as well. He has a great studio voice (I’ve listened to his Mp3’s) and a great voice for pop music. With the right material, he can do fine. Being an American idol shouldn’t be about being a Pavarotti. I’m tired of all the “but it’s a singing competition” garbage. They turn down a lot of really great singers during the auditions who are technically brilliant. Why? Because they aren’t what the show is looking for. The show is looking for potential pop idols with commercial voices. Sanjaya has that. And was as deserving of the Top 10 as anyone.

Sorry Rickey and you sanjanista’s Carly had every right to say what she did, and quite frankly I don’t blame her. While it is not Sanjaya’s fault that he was not talented enough to legitimately be a 10 contestant on AI, it is Randy, Simon, Paula and TPTB that put him on the show.

I think to any musician who has worked their butts off to be successful, seeing someone like Sanjaya getting all this press for the singing prowess of Paris Hilton, it is understandable.

All these people rip Carly because her album flopped. Record sales and talent are not always mutually exclusive. The sales of her album have NOTHING to do with her right to think that someone who essentially has lead to the decline of AI being booted off the show was a good thing.

BTW…something tells me it was a tongue in cheek comment.

Schadenfreude is not an attractive quality, IMO. Regardless of who she was talking about, her comment was tacky.

I’m wondering if she even actually saw Sanjaya’s elimination from the show, or if she was just jumping on the bandwagon. Either way, poor judgment on her part. Way to make yourself look like a jerk.

First, I want to say Sanjaya can sing! Repeatly I have heard Danny can sing have you heard his audition tapes! Sanjaya can sing have you heard his audition tapes! They both began to struggle when they hit the top twenty four, because this is when experience and more advanced training begins to become more obvious and they became frustrated. The biggest difference between the two is that Sanjaya appeared to be more shy and overwhelmed at first. Danny may have a bigger voice, but I still believe that Sanjaya has a sweeter voice. Just because someone has less experience and training(imagine that at 17) does not mean that they have no talent or are undeserving of a chance to pursue thier dreams.

Wow, after scanning through all those posts I guess I’ll add my 2 cents:

1. I love to see “schadenfreude” make it into ANY converstaion!
2. The David Cook/David Archuleta thing was way taken out of context in post #6 – read the article for yourselves because there was absolutely NO implication of malice in the article. Apparently someone just wanted to say something negative about David Cook. The article implies camaraderie.
3. This whole thread actually cracks me up. I assume the title itself – “declares war” – implies some tongue-in-cheek-iness. There are so many more serious things in the world to be passionate about! Why let this steal your joy for the day?

Yes, Carly’s comment comes across as low class. But, she’s from across the pond and British humor is much different from our humor over here. I’m just going to assume that she was trying to be funny but failed miserably. When I hear that she’s behind the stage messing with wires/speakers/microphones, or putting Visine in the drinks of her competitors, then I’ll accept that she’s a malicious witch.

I find it personally interesting that so many posts on here seem to address the idea of emotion, overreacting, etc. Sorry, but that is generally what fans do, and it’s a perfectly valid and legit. Now, as to why I invested so much time going back to that moment of Sanjaya’s elimination, and recreating it exactly as it played out, is not because I’m “emotionally damaged” (as one poster apparently took so much relish in saying)but as a means of reminding some that, no matter how you felt about Sanjaya leaving the competition, that was not an appropriate moment to celebrate. There is a little thing called simple human dignity, and all of the contestants deserve that, especially at that time. For us viewing at home, it’s one thing, perhaps. Whoop and holler and celebrate in the privacy of your own home, if you must.But for a fellow contestant, it’s really inexcusable to laud that publicly as your “favorite moment.” Now, granted, in a lot of ways I’m a softie like Paula Abdul. I almost always shed a tear when somebody leaves the show, even if I couldn’t stand them. So maybe I’m just coming at it from a different perspective than most. But I just don’t think it’s appropriate in ANY circumsatnces to say that, about anyone.

Of course, there are some who will be touting Carly as their hero. It’s for the same reason that AI appeals to the lowest common denominator. It’s a throwback to the mentality of the ancient Romans…throw ‘em to the lions and let’s all cheer. Carly Smithson apparently enjoys being on that side of the spectre. Let’s see how much she enjoys being IN the lion pit, when the time comes. I have a feeling that will be the one time I’ll have no tears to shed.

I still say she might not have realized the full implication of what she was saying though. It’s possible she never saw the elimination episode and just jumped on the Sanjaya-bashing bandwagon. In which case, she’s not rude or mean, just an eejit. Either way she deserves a good hiding.
