It is difficult to be compared to folks who have been in the music world for years.

Very green, but a pretty voice and cute kid. Isn’t that what a lot of people want Idol to be about? I’d like to see him stay and see if he can grow in the competition.

Simon was way harsh and it wasn’t deserved.

I’m only voting for Jason and Garrett tonight. I just can’t see that they’ve been given the same opportunity as the rest of the guys. I’d like to see them both again. They weren’t my favorites, but the top guys are going to breeze through according to dialidol.

On the fence w/ this one. Same age as David A but Garret definately sounds more green and has a much higher pitched voice.
Good voice, needs to grow into it. He did look very scared on stage unlike David A.

Simon’s an @**!! He is only 17, and has never sang before in such an arena. If ya think he looks like a spook, why did ya put him through, Simon. This is what I hate right now about AI, and I am already turned off.

BEAUTIFUL voice, honestly so appealing to ear. Unfortunately, this was covered up by nerves and his lack of stage presence did nothing to help this performance. Simon should NOT have said such harsh things to someone who is still in high school, but I do agree that he really shouldn’t be in the top 12. There are more talented 17/18 year olds in the competition.

He sounds like Jesse McCartney, the guy who was the voice of Theodore. He sounds like a kid, like that chicken little boy.

Aw, I liked him. I think he could have given a little more in the performance, but you could tell he still has a very nice voice.

Man, f Simon. He was so incredibly rude and nasty to Garrett. I felt so bad.

Normally, I don’t mind Simon, but this was too mean, even for him. Poor kid. He seems like a really nice guy. He’s probably not rich. He can’t go spend his days laying on the beach like Simon can. My mom and I both liked his voice well enough to throw some votes his way. Maybe he can come back next week and do better. Sometimes I enjoy when Simon is rude, like if the contestant is a jerk, but Garrett seems like a good guy.

This guy has a nice voice even if the delivery didn’t excite. But Simons’ behavior was ridiculous (as expected), hurling insults at Garrett Haleys’ complexion. That was silly!

I think that Garrett handled the whole thing with aplomb, and if he survives this week, will be stronger and challenged to improve his showmanship next week.
I found his voice very sweet and thought that a couple of weeks spent with the professionals on this show would really do him some good.
It’s pretty amazing to think that an unexperienced school kid could just pop into the top 24 on this show. Simon better be nice to him!

Garrett really wasn’t bad at all. I mean he does have a pretty voice but I guess he was nervous singing in front of so many people.

Simon on the other hand was just so mean to Garrett.

A contestant’s performance is fair game but Cowell was way off base hamnmering a kid because he’s skinny and pale. What’s that got to do with anything?

His performance could have used a little more mmmph, but the tone of his voice is nice. He reminds me of Peter Frampton in his younger years (must be the hair).

Why do contestants who pick this song during a ’60’s theme week always sing the 1975 slow version of this song? Anthony did the same thing in season 4 (liked Anthony’s version better than Garrett’s BTW). I like the upbeat 60’s version with the doo-doo-doo-down-doobie-doo-down-down’s!!

i can see a repeat of last year already after that performance. only this time, people are running to garrett’s defense.

he wasn’t as bad as i thought he would be. none of the guys brought it last night, imo.

Simon was pressing him to look relevant as his age, probably he wants garret to show more energy as he is still young. However, the fact that he is 17 and has no professional experience is amazing. He should given another chance, i’m still curious to see his improvement.

Hello everyone…This is Garrett’s Mom. I would just like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for the wonderful and encouraging comments. Garrett will continue to sing, this has afforded him many opportunities in which we are pursueing, you will hear him again. No worries about Simon, there are many simon’s in the world, however I could not be more proud of my son in handling the situation with dignity and grace, he is a true blessing! I’ll keep you posted on his music venue. Thank you all again.

I am so happy to hear that something positive came out of this experience for your son. I always get the creeps when Simon acts like he did that night. I worry about the long term effects on the psyches of these young people, especially those that seem as terrific as Garrett. Thanks for communicating with us and keeping us in the loop.

Hi Garrett’s mom! That is so cool that you posted. I want to applaud you. I was so sad when Garrett got eliminated, but I still remember how happy it made me to see how truly proud you looked up there on the balcony when Garrett got eliminated & had to sing his last song. Garrett handled the whole situation with such maturity & had a great attitude about everything, and I knew at that moment where he got that great positive attitude. Class acts, both of you! Good luck to Garrett in everything! And to you, too!
