Clay Aiken sings “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” on the American Idol Season 2 Wildcard Special.

This is one of the best performances pre-Top 12 ever, and certainly the best American Idol wildcard performance when it was still around. Clay Aiken started his quest for superstardom here. He was the viewer’s choice that night, and he and the Claymates did not look back. Clay Aiken was never in the Bottom 3, and went on to be the third-best selling Idol of all time, and sold twice as much CDs as Season 2’s winner Ruben Studdard.

Clay Aiken is currently starring in Spamalot on Broadway.

i don’t understand how one moment he can say “i don’t go to the football game anymore” and then there he is doing a recap interview for American idol rewind.

mykalromero, I really don’t see that narrating his season is nearly the same as watching the show. Its a job and who better to do it than the most successful guy from S2?

Thank you Rickey! I had never heard Clay sing this song – I have come so late to the Clay Aiken party! But I melt every time I hear him sing. What a lovely voice. I have to own some of his music.

I liked Clay when I saw his first audition, but fell in love with his voice during this performance and he became the one I was rooting for during season 2. I’m glad he’s had such a successful career.

Clay – not making it through in group 2 – HELPED HIM! He got that 1 extra week of exposure over the people who made it through initially.

Can’t wait to see Clay in Spamalot…a little plumper five years later, but still such a uniquely talented vocalist. He’s my number two favorite idol voice, next to Elliott.
