Jordin’s new single is nice. It will definitely appeal to the younger set. She has a lovely youthful voice & I don’t know what direction her CD takes entirely but could envision some “mainstream” country. Maybe it’s called country crossover, I don’t know for sure. There’s a twang in Jordin’s voice during this recording which I find natural & appealing.

the song is pretty cheesy…but still catchy. i hate the title. why tattoo? why not a mole…or a scar…you’ll always have those…lol.

definitely will be hearing this on the disney channel/radio. i rather hear this than that HSM crap.

I like her singing this. Very contemporary, young and sensitive, yet strong. I like the way her voice “breaks” or what it’s called.

My only thing is her voice seems in the same class as the Carrie Underwood-Kelly Clarkson type singer and it’s not distinguishable enough. You know what I mean? That little twang she does is so Kelly C.
I was just thinking about Stephanie Edwards who I thought had a very very distinguishable voice, but you know, she didn’t have “it”.

Oh Jordin…

Ok, This isn’t going to work. I just…don’t think it will. I guess you could say I’m in the “younger set” and I know a cheesy love song has to have a certain realism to it. I guess you have to sorta feel them.

I think most people will either not hate it or hate it but not love it. I can’t see people falling in love with this song and requesting it all the time.

It’s definitely not BAD I just don’t think it will….take off. You might hear it all over the place for a little bit but marketing can’t carry a song forever. In the end it will only have staying power if people like it.

We’ll see what happens, I could be wrong.

And btw, Tattoos can be removed.

I like it! I think it suits her, and it’s a giant step past “This Is My Now.” My only quibble is the pronunciation of “tattoo” sounds funny in spots, like one would say “tsetse fly” (would one?).
Chicago, your point at 8, that she sounds similar to so many other female pop singers: Hmm, isn’t that what AI does? it’s a machine. They keep cranking out the same old same old because they can bank on it. I liked Leslie Hunt, who had a jazzy edge to her, and I keep meaning to look her up and see if she’s got some songs on her myspace.

Does the photo with Chris Rich mean anything? (like did he have a hand in writing this?)

I noticed Chris Sligh has 3 demos on his Myspace now, and he’s firmly decided to go the Christian contemporary route.

I wasn’t a fan of Jordin on the show at all, but I really like this song. She sounds really good on recording… I can definitely hear this on the radio and possibly topping the charts. Maybe not necessarily #1, but definitely top 20 or top 10.

Usually songs take a while to grow on me, but this song caught my attention on the first listen. Sign of a big hit if you ask me.

Well I think it sounds like a hit – just the kind of thing I can see the middle-school set singing along to in the hallways. Jordin sounds good. And I agree with GirlyGirl – a vast improvement over This is My Now.

It’s going to work bec. BMG is behind it and Ryan S. is behind it and it’s going to be played over and over.
She’s such a bubbly teen, and she’s going to sell this song.
Now – does anybody think she will sing it at the end of the tour; not a bad idea you think?

I hope S7 has a distinguishable “different” voice, just IMO.

As for marketing it – BMG needs to take a lesson from Prince. If you want this to be as big as Umbrella -
Have her sing it on the tour at the end.
Give everybody who attends the concert a download “code” to download for free for 1/2 price.
That’s what I would do.

I liked it – and I think it could grow on me – but I’d say I only “like” it right now. I think it definitely could be a hit with younger listeners, as many of you have said. Thanks for providing it, Rickey.

I agree Chicago – S7 needs DIVERSITY. That was what made S5 so incredibly successful. S6 was a bunch of diva-types with 1 or 2 unique personalities thrown in (i.e. Blake). Gimme the rocker/country/soul/jazz/everything else mix!

The song is acceptable. I don’t think it will make No. 1 on the charts, however, unless her fans are loyal enough to patronize her.

Her voice IS definitely distinguishable, if you listen over and over again and become accustom to her “style,” (especially when she belts).

To me, it’s a disney song. Sounds like it was written by an “older” person who probably had a tattoo of her boyfriend’s/girlfriend’s name on their person….

They could have done more with the music (kind of overwhelming) and not up to date with the times … just bland music, nothing to enhance the “tattoo bridge.” If it had more of “something” to distinguish that phrase of the song, it might have become a hit! Do I see “remix” in the future? If someone did a “remix,” that would probably sell better than the original.

I personally did not like it.
She’ll definitely reach her younger fans with
this; not anyone else, though.

Her vibrato is too much! I think she is far more suited for the country scene.

Okay. Third time listening to it … I’m likin’ it A LOT…. I’m so proud of her! This was her dream — to sing and record, and she got achieved it at such a young age! Congrats! And, she will only get better in her vocal arrangement and style!

There’s no way this song will be as big as Umbrella. It’s not catchy enough. And, as far as I know, no one (even those who’ve had singles released and on the radio by the time the tour is over a la Carrie and Kellie Pickler) has sung a single from their debut album on the tour before. This tour isn’t about their debut albums. They’ll get the chance to promote the hell outta those in a few months.

Oh. The song. The lyrics are too cheesy to be believeable, and it’s definitely inoffensive and bland, but she sounds good singing it. So that’s a plus. It will be a hit with her demographic (tweens), but on AC or even top 40? I’m not sure. Let’s put it this way… I can’t see my brash, brazen top 40 DJ’s playing it on their morning show (which is when the true HIT songs are played).

I can see it being a modest hit, but it’s not likely to stay at #1 for weeks on end, even if it does reach that spot.

But, it’s a solid start for her. You can definitely tell she’s going for the tween demographic. Good decision for her, IMO.

Eh….same ol’ pop fluff. Though its catchy. AND she said before she wants to do “radio-friendly” music. She’s dumb enough to obied. That being said, she’ll do well on the charts. She’s only 17, right?! lol. Sell them records and be controlled. Thats where her career will head towards anyway.

Shadow – hate to crush your heart….but …. I don’t think any of the other Idols will get signed to a MAJOR label….maybe an indy. Maybe they will have to do their own CD and then shop it out, like Constantine. But for this season, that’s it…IMO. (exc. for Chris Sligh who signed w/ a Christian label)

Ugh, the comparisons to Umbrella are painful! I HATE that song! “You can stand under my umbrella – ella – ella – eh – eh.” Double ugh!

Looks like Blake landed a major contract. I expect him to be the break-out of this season. As much as I love Jordin, this is just a bit too bubble-gummy for major success, although it DOES remind me of Kelly C’s 1st album, so there’s hope!

I sometimes think that the fact that Sanjaya is so hazy about the details about what he is doing, or will do post tour, means that whatever he has planned (or tptb have) is going to be big and will blow the others out of the water. The others are pimping their projects as much as they can while the spot light shines on them. Sanjaya? He’s moving to LA and writing songs with his sister. Yeah, right.

Look at practically every news story about the tour and Sanjaya is the lede or one of three mentioned in greater detail. It’s not just Rickey’s, daze’s or other fanjaya sites that can’t stop talking about him. People notice that sort of thing.

While certain “debbie downers” like to predict imminent nonentityhood for Sanjaya post tour, I just don’t think the facts warrant it.

Anyone ever know what happened to that cheerleader footage? They don’t do film shoots for nuttin’.

Girly @ #12 – yes, I know Idol is a machine and they produce the same sounding singers over and over…I would like to see something “different” next season…I thought Stephanie Edwards had a very distinguishable voice…you know, somebody that when you hear them you say – that’s So&So (Barbara Streisand), and so far Idol is churning out the same type voice and style among the female singers, exc. for Fantasia, who’s voice is gritty soul. And Paris had a distinguishable voice.

Even Kimberly Locke is in that same voice style and tone. Which reminds me, Jordin’s song could have been sung by Kim Locke, as well as Kat-Carrie-Kelly C. Their voices are interchangeable.

you guys this is definately going to be in the top songs…i dont know why people dont think it will be number one cus i think it definately has the potential. does anyone no if this is an actually released single for like the radio or is it just like a sneak peak to her album. cus if that’s the case then maybe this isnt her debut single. but still i think it would be a great debut single. and i think performing it at the end of the tour is a good idea. so what if they haven’t done that before…they can change things up. but it’s gonna be hugely played and people will definately catch on to it. i love jordin!

Chicago-48: although I disagree with you about the distinguishability-factor (if that’s a word!) – I totally agree about the AI-niche. To be a success, AI contestants have to be accessible to non-AI viewers. For example, my brother and cousin just attended a Daughtry concert with me although they are NOT AI-viewers.

I didn’t think Stephanie had a distinguishable voice in a good way – I was just never a fan. And I always know when I hear Kelly C on the radio. I LOVE her voice!

Those little hiccup sounds in the background are really annoying. Other than that, the music is quite generic. The lyrics are dumb and clichéd. But at least she’s not shrieking. I think this type of cheesy sugary pop song will do well with the children’s market, like the Hannah Montana crowd.

She ain’t no Kelly Clarkson, that’s for sure.

Will be interesting to learn what her follow-up release is. Based on the above, marketers are gearing Jordin towards a specific audience. Don’t know the total flavor of her CD compilation yet, but if she has the usual 9 or 10 additional songs, it had better consist of stronger & varied material than what is provided here.

Regarding Stephanie; her initial performance once in the top 12 was stunning. Then everything slowly went downhill for her to me. The problem in my opinion was that she was too much a Beyonce fan, trying to emulate her vocal style. I think that only Beyonce can sing Beyonce. I know that she is a megastar but some of her vocal stylings make me cringe. Stephanie should have been honestly critiqued NOT to model her singing after an artist with an unusual delivery; I think this hurt her on the AI show. So much for friends & family & giving it to you “real”.

It’s POP, for gosh sakes, which, by definition, is light and cliched. With its catchy melody, I don’t think this tune will be restricted to the Disney crowd. Chicago, I agree with your points at 38, and I liked Fantasia and Paris for their unique style on the show (haven’t bought their recordings though). I hope that AI7 has more variety for folks, but I won’t be watching.

IO at 37, i hope you’re right. It’s funny you mentioned the UCLA cheerleader thing. I was recalling that yesterday as well, perhaps because fall tv shows are starting to be promoted. Also I’m reading King Dork at the moment–remember our flurry of excitement over that (and then our angst over the title, lol)?? I was wondering whether Sanjaya’s camp would make announcements after the 23rd, and then I thought they might be better served by keeping quiet–no pressure that way, even though the fans will be kept guessing

Now when Jordin Sang ‘I Who Have Nothing’ & ‘On A Clear Day’, on AI, she had me. If she includes songs of this type on the current CD or her sophomore effort, she’s got a sale from me for sure. I love the standards. Actually, I have eclectic musical tastes & if the melody appeals, I listen further for the lyrics.

My interest in Jordin’s freshman effort was such after sampling her ‘Tattoo’ song, that I googled her last night & enjoyed her & ‘older’ versions of ‘I Who Have Nothing’ by Tom Jones & Shirley Bassey…then Barbra Streisand’s rendition of ‘On A Clear Day’. Just great music!

Aprylette – I Who Have Nothing may be my favorite performance on AI ever (although I would have to really think about that).

I think the problem is the AI audience likes to hear those ballads, but ballads aren’t played very much on mainstream radio. I guess I’m thinking of Kat in particular: 2 of my friends were HUGE Kat fans, and had the same experience – bought her CD, listened to it once or twice, and haven’t touched it since. But, if you like to sing up-beat songs you probably won’t do so well on AI where ballads are favored.

Daisy: You’ve got a point there. It’s kind of a quandary for the artist. AI does embrace the bold ballads & belting songs that the audience of that contestant then becomes accustomed to. It’s dramatic & makes for good tv. But post AI, in the “real” world, standards won’t get the mainstream radio play unless you successfully tweak it like Blake did for the 60’s hit, ‘Time Of The Season’. I have always enjoyed the original but actually like his version also. I have to be honest & that is I am not a Blake fan & judging his effort without bias results in a thumbs up to the decisions being made on behalf of his freshman CD.

Aprylette and Daisy, both of you make good points. I Who Have Nothing gave me chills, but Daisy may be right about ballads not getting much air time. There are exceptions, but… Ballads are AI’s bread and butter these days. I remember when “too Broadway” was a kind of putdown, but now belters are the Chosen Ones. And Aprylette, you’re dead on that it’s probably because ballads make for great tv.
(and I’m with you on Time of the Season–that is the one and only Blake tune I enjoyed)

GirlyGirl45: I wonder what direction AI will take for S7. I think the ‘belters’ are here to stay cuz, like you said they are the “Chosen Ones”. LOL But producers need to do something to re-invigorate the show! I believe their going to allow contestants to play instruments this time.
Not sure though.
