On American Idol, Bo Bice was known for his rockin’ covers, mellow mood and, of course, extra-long locks. But with a new album, 3, due out May 18th — not to mention three young sons at home — the singer has decided to change things up a bit with newly shoulder-length locks. “I have a new project with a new style of music, incorporating more country elements,” he tells PEOPLE.com. “With all these new aspects going on in my career, it was just another thing that I felt needed a bit of change.”

I love Bo! I cherish those AI days when the anticipation of what Bo was going to sing would drive me crazy! And when he started singing, I would scream like goofy rockstar groupie. But, I loved it!
I am loving his new hair style. I hope for continued success and hope to see a show of his someday.

To me, he’s not “one of” the best – he IS the best! He had the whole package: entertainer, stage presence, distinct amazing voice, and knew who the heck he was from the get-go. He will always be my AI for life.

Bo is one of my all time favorite AI alumni. He helped move AI to a new level. He was nice and had a great voice. I always thought RCA did him wrong by trying to make him a pop artist. Country rock is a much better fit for him. I hope he is wildly successful with the new album.
