HAIR – OFF!
My favorite part of the interview is Sanjaya lamenting that he didn’t sing “She Thinks My Tractor’s Sexy” for country week. Tee-hee.
I don’t know what’s going on in the second pic, but I think he’s proving that he can do more than the ’side step, snap’.

I think he sounded great and I love how humble he still is.
I remember reading somewhere that he wanted to sing “Mercedes Benz”. I would’ve loved to hear him sing that.

hey rickey do you know who his agent is??
they got it so wrong with this one. In the interview Sanjaya said he doesnt even know what he’s doing there. I had a funny feeling about this from the beggining. i knew jubal was a drag show..arrgh
they tried to set him up??!!
he seriously needs a better agent.
well atleast he was a good sport and had fun anyway. BUT DAMN BOY GET A GOOD REP!!!

He didn’t know he could ask for things in his dressing room.
He was scared to approach Fergie for an autograph, and then surprised that she knew who he was.
lol. Toooooo funny.
Thanks Rickey! The audio was great. Too bad the video had some unknown, loud male voice coming right through it. But, the audio was great! Thanks again.

Anyone else see Sanjaya on Rachael Ray yet?
He led off the announcements at the top of the show but had the second and third segments.
No new information for fans but he came across well for regular Rachael viewers.
She didn’t dis his singing but she never actually said anything about his ability to sing.
And because it was taped back when he was in New York there was a little of that “Well you ARE entertaining” to the whole thing.
He’s much more comfortable being in the spotlight even in this short time, even if he still fidgits.
Loved that he said he felt great whenever he sang before he was judged. Apparently Blake’s attitude according to RR was Thank God that’s over for another week.
Sanjaya loves to sing all the time and he’s frustrated that he can’t right now.

Thanks for the sneak preview, Interested Observer! We don’t get the show til this afternoon. It will be my first time seeing Sanjaya on TV since his audition on AI, so I’m really looking forward to it. I’ve seen everything else on Rickey.org, which I guess is kind of funny.

Yep, I’m on the East Coast, so it just aired here. I agree with Interested Observer’s assessment. Sanjaya had his little goatee scruff going. It was kind of the standard interview we’ve been hearing (“I’m just Sanjaya from Seattle”), but RR has such an easygoing style that Sanjaya seemed relaxed, and he’s very good at not taking the bait when asked who his favorite Idols are, etc. He talked about how great the Idol staffers are. I was just hoping that he and Rachel would shimmy into the kitchen together, since Sanjaya likes to cook, but Dustin Hoffman was her guest for that. Maybe another time.

Okay, here’s a negative opinion:
I absolutely love Sanjaya but I truly believe that 19E is trying to screw him. Everyone knows that American Idol hates Sanjaya and is hell-bent on destroying this 17 year old kid. They seem to jump on every chance to humiliate him. It’s the reason I now hate this show and refuse to watch. These people are despicable.
The only reason they pushed him into this event is to help drum up sales for the tanking Kat McPhee by using Sanjaya is a punching bag. I’m so sick of this.
Marketing-wise they should be packaging Sanjaya to his natural demographic, the Disney crowd. Putting him on Hannah Montana (taking up Billy Ray’s offer) or developing like a High School Musical type project. Little girls love Sanjaya. They don’t carry hate in their hearts like the adults do.
Keeping Sanjaya in the dark, not even telling him what is going on or why he is supposed to show up at this event, and then suddenly throwing him on stage with five drag queens. I feel like he was ambushed. Where was Jillian? He looked totally confused to me. I’m sure we’ll hear more of the usual gay-bashing type jokes from the haters today.
Maybe rainy days just get me down, but today, I really hate people, and reality TV producers in general, and I have a seething hatred for all things American Idol. Those people suck.

I felt the same like Amina felt, most of the producers like to bashing him, they all underestimated him. If I am rich and have a millions dollars ,I will help him so he can produce his song etc.

amina, take a deep breath, eat a papaya and chill.
This Girl’s Night Out thing is part of a tour. It just happened to be in Seattle — Sanjaya’s hometown — at the same time that Sanjaya was there making appearances (as you may have seen here on Rickey’s). I’m sure it was just someone’s idea of ‘fun’ to get him on stage with the drag act. Sanjaya looked like he had fun with it and it got people cheering. It wasn’t bad.
As far as I know, Sanjaya isn’t scheduled to follow Kat around when she tours. And in fact, her CD sales are great for a new artist and her singles are getting radio airplay. By your own reasoning (“19E is trying to screw him. Everyone knows that American Idol hates Sanjaya and is hell-bent on destroying this 17 year old kid.”), it wouldn’t even make sense to use him to promote someone else if they have such a negative view of him, much less include him in a big summer tour and get him interviews. And what do you make of his appearances on the Rachel Ray show, Leno and Letterman? They’re doing a pretty bad job of screwing him.
Don’t take things too literally. When Sanjaya said that he didn’t know what he was doing there, I think he meant that a lot of things are happening to him and he’s finding himself at events with Fergie, etc, when he’s just “Sanjaya from Seattle”.
About his demographic, if you viewed the pictures, you would have seen that there were a bunch of little girls at this concert — probably the same ones you can hear in the videos, squealing for Sanjaya and Kat — who did a great job.

I’ve just looked over everything on the website for this show and frankly I have to agree with those posting wtf.
I don’t see how putting Jubal and the Ball Drags together with the four headliners works, let alone with Sanjaya. Aren’t they all marketed towards the young girl set? Do they really share a demographic with drag queens?
The only bright spot is that Sanjaya came through it well on his own good spirited and appropriate behavior. But really, the guy is still a kid and this was not appropriate on that basis, at least. to be put on stage as the object of lust for adults or to imply as the luster. And that they didn’t tell how he would be presented is just plain wrong.
All these “macho” guys who set this up need to get over the fact that Sanjaya is not gay, just because he’s very cute or whatever it is that is setting them off. And pointing a finger and sniggering “you’re gay” isn’t cute. Nor is it acceptable in anyone older than about 8. And even then such behavior is more a teaching moment than acceptable behavior.
Geez, it’s like the 60s all over again when they thought long hair made you a girl. I thought we were long past that.
I can only put this all down to inexperience and ignorance on someone’s part, perhaps his mother’s, if she is in fact his manager right now. As Sanjaya is always saying, I hope they learn what they needed to from this experience and don’t make the same mistake again.
The radio station people who set this up should be ashamed of themselves and I hope it comes back to bite them on the @ss in the future.
Interested Observer on May 14, 2007 at 12:06 pm

Exactly. It was totally age-inappropriate. He is SEVENTEEN YEARS OLD. Geez. Let me say it again, Randy Jackson style: Sanjaya is 17! 17! 17! 17!!! SEVENTEEN YEARS OLD. He’s a MINOR. He shouldn’t even be in a night club.
The vile idiot who thought it would be funny to throw this poor kid on stage to be mauled by 5 drag queens and that manservant(?)in his underwear with a dog collar around his neck…wow…I’m just appalled. And Sanjaya looked very confused and uncomfortable.
Those radio station people are disgusting. It seems people think it’s okay to constantly humiliate Sanjaya and make him the butt of their bullying because he’s a nice kid and a good sport. You know what? It’s not. It’s about time these sick creeps get called out on their sadistic behavior.

Too bad there are restrictions from AI about him not being able to sing until the tour. It would be nice if he could do some small concerts, not just these events where he makes a guest appearance. No opening acts either…just Sanjaya and his music I guess we just have to be patient.

I have teenagers and I would be very upset about this. The drag queens are advertised anywhere on the radio web site except after the fact.
I do not have a problem with drag queens. There is a time and place for anything consenting adults want to do. This did not look like it was marketed as an adult event but more as a tenn event specifically focused on females.
The more I think about this the more I am pissed off about it.
Interested Observer on May 14, 2007 at 12:49 pm

no here has any idea why he went to this event – what he may have gotten for being there or what dividends it may pay on the future
The station that sponsored it is THE station for pop/rock type music here in Seattle and were the heavy (and I mean heavy) sponsors along with AI of Blake”s appearance in Seattle. Their rotation may really help an artist here in Seattle.
If all he got was some publicity, free snacks and a bank of goodwill to this station then that was enough.
sounds like some fun on Sunday night to me

I agree with you. While it was a stupid act. Sanjaya made some connections and built some good will with a very influential local radio station.
Hopefully his appearance there will start to change their minds about him and they’ll treat him better in the future.
I understand people being upset but y’all really need to chill and look to whole picture and start viewing things long term.

I hardly think that Sanjaya was duped into this. The queen show was a little bawdy, but it was clean and done in good fun with Sanjaya, not at Sanjaya, IMO, and Sanjaya was his affable, good-sport self. Clubs in my city are open to all ages–just those under age can’t drink. So being just 17 and in a club is a non-issue here. It actually works pretty well, although not always. Same for Seattle, maybe?
Amina, you are a fierce Fanjaya, and I know you just want to make sure he doesn’t get exploited. Sanjaya and his mom are level-headed and are going to be okay. The Momjaya is fierce, too, and will step in when necessary, don’t you think?
The radio interview was great. I have to say, though, that it’s the radio stations I’ve worried about, more than appearances on Leno and such. The radio stations seem like bottom feeders to me. A station here that bills itself as sort of a G-rated program, with DJs in the morning who span from 20 to 50 to appeal to a wide demographic, said the usual crap about Sanjaya. It seemed really out of character for them, and I wrote in a protest. Never heard back, but I also haven’t heard any bashing since.

GirlyGirl45: well I had to get all the way to the bottom to read your post and was beginning to wonder if anyone would express MY point of view, but there you were lol. Once again we are on the same wave length. I agree with everything you said.
I really don’t see what the fuss is about. Can we maybe hear from someone who was at the show? Based on this video, I don’t see anything that makes this a stupid move. Drag queens? Big deal. Yeah, the guy in the pink collar was not my cup of tea, but that was about the most risque part of it as far as I’m concerned – and that was tame. Maybe it’s a cultural thing because I’m not from the states, but I don’t even see where draq queens, in themselves, are inappropriate for children. Depends on the the tone of the show. Men dressed up as women? From Some Like it Hot to Tootsie to Mrs. Doubtfire – it’s all in good fun (I could name others like The Birdcage, With Love, Julie Newmar, Connie and Carla etc. but those are a little more adult – still funny and mainstream tho. And starring, in most of them, STRAIGHT men.) If all he did was what was in the video, my only criticism would be that it seemed a bit pointless – but I thought he was there to emcee? If that’s the case, doesn’t that put it in perspective somewhat?
I think we should give Sanjaya and his people a bit more credit. I’d even venture to say that Sanjaya knows exactly what he’s doing. Did you hear those squeals from the audience? All he’s doing is expanding his fan base, IMO.

Bubblingice: Are you kidding? You missed EVERYTHING lol.
OK I’ll give it a try. Well there was the Seattle Center appearance and video courtesy of Rickey’s awesome pal Tolen, followed by discussions about how much Sanjaya fidgets and moves around. The posters were split between wanting him to practice standing still in front of a mirror, and finding his awkwardness completely “adorkable” – Amina’s word, I think. Many agreed that a) the pic of him leaning against the pole was like a model shot and b) that the one where he is shushing his little half-brother is the cutest thing ever. Most everyone was impressed at how Momjaya stepped in at one point and saved Sanjaya from sounding like a loser lol. The crowd loved him.
Then we found out that Sanjaya made an appearance at a Ford dealership. He had made a deal them to get the loan of a car. The crowd reportedly went wild. We read the article about it, and took umbrage at the journalist’s sloppy reporting – saying that Sanjaya sings “off-key.” Interested Observer suggested we write to the journalist and set him straight. Then ensued a discussion about what constitutes off-key singing, pitchiness, and so on. The general assessment was that off-key singing is NOT something that can be attributed to Sanjaya. Somehow we also got on the subject of what kind of music Sanjaya should record.
Finally, there was the Girls Night Out thing with some drag queens. Many were offended/affronted that Sanjaya would be associated with such a thing. Others thought it was a tempest in a teapot. There is video of him dancing on stage with them (little more than a side-step-snap actually – I mean it’s not like he’s doing burlesque) and audio of an interview in which he was asked the same old questions and remained gracious anyway. When he came on stage, the crowd went wild.
Today there was Rachael Ray. No cooking, just an interview. In which he is asked the same. old. questions. But she was very nice with him, in my opinion, and of course it’s always nice to see Sanjaya. He was chased by paparazzi on the way to the studio, and once he got there, the crowd went wild.
Well that’s MY take on the weekend – from memory. Did I miss anything, y’all? lol

thx, Hester, and way to catch up, Bubblingice!
I’m a big jazz fan, too, but alas, it’s kind of dying (because the performers are). In fact, my Sunday paper did a lengthy story on it this weekend. I’d dropped in on a jazz group Friday and was one of the youngest there, and I’m 45! my jazz station has great programming, but I never know whether whom I’m listening to is alive or dead. Sorry, I’m way off topic here. So, if Sanjaya can add some jazzy strains to his music, bless him.
Re the queens, all I can say is it takes a whole lot of people and views to make the world go ’round. Fear and hatred are what bring it to a halt. Woops, I’m off topic again. bye!

Tempest in a teapot. All kinds of girls like Sanjaya and I am sure the audience for girls night out is part of Sanjaya’s audience. It’s fun and goofy humor, just fine, plays on his sexiness (let’s admit it, he is and in fact has gotten even better looking this past six months).
I like that he was a last minute add — how else are you gonna work him into a “girl’s night out” theme then as an adorable young hunk who’s kind of counter-culture and innocent all at the same time.
sukey on May 14, 2007 at 10:23 pm
40
I agree with you Sukey: I don’t think the radio station intentionally invited Sanjaya to humilate him. I think they did it because they knew who would be in the audience (young girls). He was his usually adorable self and having a good time. I thought it was cute hearing he was too nervous to ask Fergie for an autograph! He’s a sweetie!
Well, I watched it. I did not finish. Ugh. For what it’s worth, I don’t think they meant to humiliate Sanjaya. I think they liked him enough to invite him to their party and… well, they included him in their party doing what they do there. The inference is that he’s a hot piece, which is true, and would not have been unsettling if he’d been a little older. I think I understand why Jill let him do this, because that’s an important radio station and they really need this station to support Sanjaya and play his music, but… ugh. Too young. His appeal is still too wrapped up in his innocence, and much of his fanbase is too young. I don’t think he’s currently in a professional place where dancing with drag queens is a good idea, but I don’t think they meant to hurt him.
