Adam Lambert debuts at #3 on the Billboard 200 with 198,000 copies of “For Your Entertainment”. He beats Kris Allen’s sales of 80,000 copies last week. He also beat David Archuleta’s opening week sales of 183,000 last year. How much Adam will sell in the coming year is up in the air. Despite massive promotions and a high-profile performance at the AMA awards, Adam’s singles have not seen widespread radio airplay. He’s also switched the carrier single to “Whataya Want From Me” instead of “For Your Entertainment” which he sang at the AMAs.
The rest of the top albums on the Billboard 200:
1. Susan Boyle “I Dreamed a Dream” – 701,000
2. Andrea Bocelli “My Christmas” – 218,000
3. Adam Lambert “For Your Entertainment” – 198,000
4. Rihanna “Rated R” – 181,000
5. Lady Gaga “The Fame Monster” – 174,000
6. Lady Gaga “The Fame” – 151,000
7. Miley Cyrus “The Time Of Our Lives” – 150,000
8. Taylor Swift “Fearless” 125,000
9. Carrie Underwood “Play On” – 124,000 (Up 44% from last week, woohoo!)
10. Norah Jones “The Fall” – 110,000

Yeah, the lack of radio support will be a problem for him.
If you have been paying attention, Whataya Want From Me is being added to stations like crazy this week. I heard it yesterday three times on one NYC station alone. It is rising quickly on the Itunes chart as well. Stop being so negative. Adam is doing great.
Ugh, the fact that Rhianna placed that high on the list with that terrible album she put out is ridiculous. And Adam’s album really isn’t that good at all… I much prefer Allison’s! or even Kris. And don’t bash me, I was a fan of him on the show.
Lady Gaga should have placed higher than the two of them. At least that album’s creative.
“Whataya Want From Me” if added to the radio, could and should keep his CD going, otherwise the sparkle cows are going to have to empty their bank accounts to keep the thing charting.
Adam’s twitter twinkgate gets better and better. He likes bad boys

Gaga, you’re wrong, Adam’s album is great! Haven’t you read the reviews … no I’m sure you haven’t. You would see that they are mostly all positive. You’re just jealous because Adam blew Kris out of the water with his debut. LOL
I should add that THIS is what happens when fantards stalk twitter, myspace, and facebook friends. They have been tweeting this guy for two days straight and now it’s caught the eyes of many. Adam is never going to get laid again, and it’s all the glamtards fault!!11!!
rickey, you LOVE riling up David Archuleta fans, don’t you? i remember all the **** you pulled during that season.
that’s nice, good for him, but Kris Allen’s album is better and less generic and that’s all that matters
ri ri beat gaga weird riri new album sucks way to go adam i knew he was going to sell more !!!yay
Yeah, good for Adam his album is amazing i have to say. To me its the best album of this year. Love every song on it it’s that good.
kassandra why do you keep posting stuff about Adam if you don’t like him then get out of hear. Go to a Kris post cuz im sure no one done nothing there.
Well atleast David Archuleta debuted at #2..and how did Crush do compared to Adams single? Yeah think about it..
@Really?: David Archuleta was runner-up last year, and Adam Lambert was the runner-up this year. It’s a LEGITIMATE comparison.
Trying to rile up the Archies, excuse me. The most loyal Rickey.org readers are David Archuleta fans and I don’t know what “****” you are talking about. Are you talking about the divorce and massage parlor arrest? That was news wasn’t it? Sheesh. As if I invented those items to create controversy.
Rickey, I’m a David Archuleta fan and I have no problem with your post. If anything, you are one of the most supportive bloggers for David.
I really don’t care that Adam debuted 15,000 albums higher because I know that David sold all his albums based on pure talent and with only 1/3 of the promotion. Even now his Christmas album is higher than Adam’s on itunes.
I personally think S8 was pretty weak and the album sales speak for themselves.
Yea for Adam! I am really happy with this first week of sales. And I am also happy with WWFM as a new single…its just a better song than FYE. I heard WWFM on two different radio stations here today. I have not heard Kris’ song one time around here, so I’m not sure what’s up with that.
And BTW, ArchuleTTa has always been, and will always be the biggest DORK ever on Idol. When he starts growing facial hair, he will be toast in the music industry. He’s too short, too giggly, and Justin Bieber is the latest tween/teen heart throb. LOL, ArchuleTTa who??
^ Adam’s fans are just like him.
Congratulations to Adam!! I am so happy for him and he deserves this so much! Sure, it is a little less than what was estimated, but still a very respectable first week figure. Especially considering the steep competition he was up against (can’t believe Lady GaGa is at number 5). This doesn’t even count his international sales! He was in the top 20 in multiple countries all last week, and even placed higher in some than in the US! We can probably add at least another $50K to that figure. Now all he needs is a hit single. With ‘WWFM’ being added to radio this week, it should start climbing the charts.
By the way, those of you claiming that Adam’s album is awful… have you actually listened to all the songs in their entirety, or are you just saying that because you don’t like him? Though not perfect, his album is very respectable for an Idol debut. I enjoy it very much, and I normally don’t care for that type of music. His album has gotten higher reviews than most of the Idols’ debut albums in the past, even Kris’ and Kelly Clarkson’s. It wasn’t until Kelly’s second album came out did her career really take off. And Adam is the FIRST Idol contestant in the show’s history to be recognized on the international level right off the bat. He should feel very proud of himself today.
Rickey,
I think it is a smart choice to switch the single from FYE to WWFM. WWFM is much more radio friendly, and FYE will be forever linked to the AMA performance. A lot of radio stations flat out refused to play it, which is one of the reasons why it didn’t do so well. The fact that Adam’s album sold so well with very little radio play says something very significant about Adam’s potential. It says he has a very large, strong fanbase from which to build, and that is important. I do; however, think that the video from FYE will sell very well. It goes on sale on ITunes December 15th and has been very well received so far. Adam’s fans will push that to the Itunes number 1 video easily.
I’ve been reading the posts by Adam fans and the all follow the same basic pattern:
1. Bash Rickey for saying anything less than praiseworthy about Adam.
2. Explain ALL the reasons why Adam is more successful than Kris (and never vice versa given).
3. Explain why Adam is more successful than all the past idols and bash some other idols in the process.
4. Explain why Adam is more successful than all the rock legends of the world.
5. Cry that Adam is continually discriminated against and that Omigosh he is the next ROCK GOD!
Raise your hand if you agree! LOL
Hilarious: #3-5 were pretty funny, and I’m an Adam fan. IMO, Adam is a GREAT singer and that’s why I like him…for that fabulous voice. Rock God? No. Not yet anyway. He’s gonna have to earn that title and it won’t come right now. He’s no different than any other rocker who had to pay their dues to earn the “Rock God” reputation. I do think he’ll get there eventually but no, not yet.
Sirius/XM hits 1 frequently plays “for your entertainment”. I always hear it. FYI.
Maybe Rickey is just bitter that Adam’s album did better than his favorite Kris. (lol)
Hilarious,
With a couple of obvious exceptions, most of the posts about Adam have been spot on. Especially #16. I do not see anything in that post that isn’t true. And I see very little bashing of former contestants. Stating facts does not translate to bashing. Contrary to popular belief with Kris fans, most Adam fans are not delusional enough to think that Adam is the next Madonna. Do we think he has potential? Yes. But we realize he has a long way to go and a lot of hurdles to jump.
And why would Adam fans feel the need to compliment Kris’? This blog isn’t about Kris. Bringing Kris into the equation would just open up more fan wars, and I think most people would like to avoid that.
Adams album is sinking fast….it fell all the way to number 28 on itunes chart today……the new single also failed to debut in top 100…..
Fabian, you neglected to state that Adam’s album is number 8 on the Itunes pop chart. You also neglected to say that Kris’ album is down to 91 on the overall chart and 18 on the pop chart. Maybe Kris’ chart positions are the ones you should be worried about and not Adam’s.
First, Congrats to Adam for good #. Good # is good # and fact is fact. Though I am sad that nowadays douche and hypocrite could still be popular.
However, did Adam really beat David A.? W/o the help of Black Friday, it may never happen. David A. debuted two weeks before Black Friday last year. According to BB, the total sales in the week of David A’s debut (ending Nov. 16, 2008) is 8.9 millions (http://www.billboard.biz/bbbiz/content_display/charts/chart_alert/e3ib7a1cbce7faa46df0a5683a77f74bd5e) while the total sales for Adam’s debut week (ending Nov. 29 2009) is 10.73 millions (http://www.billboard.biz/bbbiz/content_display/industry/e3i7be089acf10901c7939511666602a091), an increase of 20.5%. With the 20.5% increase, David A’s # would have been 221K if he had debuted the same week as Adam.
And this didn’t count other inflation factors such as 10x promo and one more day sale. Look at the #s of Carrier, Daughtry, and Kelley (both singles and album), you would have an idea on the boost from AMA performance.
I’m a HUGE Archuleta fan too and it doesn’t bother me. Adam had a huge amount of press, a song in a hit movie, a video with the hit movie for background, not to mention his Amazon MP3 album for $3.99 and a whole day when the MP3 album could be had for 99 cents using the free $3 Amazon was offering toward MP3s. I am actually surprised he didn’t sell more than he did.
@violetforever. “I am actually surprised he didn’t sell more than he did.”
Exactly.
Experts predicted that Adam would sell bigger than that since he was all over the place and in the news almost everyday. Plus he closed the evening at the AMAs, yet he under sold. With all the publicity he should have sold more. Plus many of Adam’s fans bought up to 12 cds each. Are they going to maintain that same buying trend forever?
haha to Dakkota are you Glamberts STILL talking about Kris? I am not a Kris fan, but I at least give him respect for not being a sell out like Adam. Adam should own up to all his mistakes and not make excuses, like he and his fans do.
Adam has had more promotion than ANY Idol winner or 2nd place in the history of Idol, yet he failed to crack his predicated numbers. Archie had less promotion than Glambert. Archie didn’t close the AMAs. Archie was never featured on the cover of any magazines like Adam, or had hundreds of stories written about him.
When you think about it Adam should’ve sold over that amount considering all the free and paid promotion Adam received.
SO happy for SuBo.
Taylor Swift is the only real deal there. That album came out last year, yet it outsold Carrie which just recently came out.
The girl is a beast. lol
Dru … what are you basing it on that Adam is the first idol in history to be recognized on the international level? … within 11 months after season 7 ended, David Archuleta was (successfully) touring all over the UK (opening for McFly) and had very successful headlining concerts in Asia (Singapore, Malaysia and a huge concert in the Philippines that drew 50,000). If Adam does do that, he still won’t be the first.
Around this time last year, while David was on the Jingle Ball/ Jam 2008 concerts, the word was already out that a winter/spring solo tour was planned for his debut album. Is that the case yet for any season 8 idols? I have no idea really.
David has been on tour virtually the whole year of 2009. He has worked very hard for his success, not taking things for granted and keeping things in perspective. No ego here folks.
I agree with those that even though Adams sales are high … it does not equate to the amount of publicity he had … yet it is still a very impressive debut, but it will be interesting what the following weeks’ holiday sales will be. He is already at 51 on itunes after only the first week. David’s album remained within the top 20 on i-tunes for the remainder of the Christmas season last year. Not to mention his Christmas album is 20 on i-tunes now so he is ahead of Adam there. David’s single Crush reached platinum within 4 months and only a week after Cook’s first single, that rainbows song which came out 3 months earlier, went platinum.
I could go on and on … So if people want to compare … make sure the facts are complete on all sides please.
David may not be the high publicity, high profile type with all the hype … but I believe he will consistantly do well in whatever he attempts to do because he is willing to work hard for it (as opposed to trying to make it big quick with gimmicky acts), and is completely professional in his work, and is focused on what is important … his music and reaching and touching people with his music.
