Entertainment Weekly asked Adam Lambert about the OUT Magazine scandal at the AMA rehearsals in LA.

Excerpt:

Adam: “But I didn’t feel comfortable talking about the March on Washington. I didn’t feel comfortable, so I asked my publicist to ask the interviewer to stay away from the political questions. I take full responsibility for that. I think that the editor has his agenda and has his opinions, which I respect, but they’re not necessarily my opinions. And I wish there was a little respect for that. Not every gay man is the same gay man.”

I am at a loss for words.

Bravo Adam!!! Rickey, you could learn a few things from Adam.

Not all gays are the same. Not all straights are the same. Why you wanna put everyone in a box? Haven’t we just spent the last 20 years trying to get out of the box?

Yeah, believe it or not, being gay does not obligate you to be a spokesman for “the cause,” no more than being black obligates you to be a civil rights leader. I’m actually very surprised (and disappointed) at gay figures’ response to this. It’s as though Adam’s betrayed and abandoned the gay community. Get over yourselves. He just doesn’t feel comfortable talking politics. Well, he shouldn’t have to.

Right. Adam can use his gayness as a publicity stunt and media whoring tactic.

Adam is covering for 19 because that’s where the money is, always has been the name of the game with them, and him. Match made in heaven.

Both Editor and Adam are douchebags. They all have their own agenda which unfortunately are not in line with each other. Obviously, Adam achieved his agenda of publicity w/o answering the sensitive questions while Editor didn’t get his. Therefore, cat fight is followed.

If you don’t want to answer sensitive questions associated with being gay, then don’t sell your gayness to gain publicity (including the album cover). The world is fair in certain way – all the gains/benefits are associated with liabilities/responsibilities. Adam is no exception.

Isn’t Adam a singer? I know some people feel he can’t sing at all but that is what he’s trying to be. He’s not trying to be a politician and frankly it’s sort of nice to run across a celebrity who doesn’t think they have the answer to every political problem on the planet.

I’ve never felt it’s fair to put some kind of mantle on Adam’s shoulders because he happens to be gay. This is supposed to be about music.

If there is anyone who put any mantle on the shoulders of Adam b/c he’s gay, it is Adam himself. If he had wanted it’s all about music for him, he would have behaved differently.

If you dress up and behave like prostitute, don’t blame others for wanting to pay you for sex. You are in control of your life, and others just react to that.

Oh I see, so he has to stay in the closet and act straight. Once he acknowledges being gay or even acts the slightest bit gay then he’s obliged to carry the mantle. I suppose that may have been the case in 1950 but it isn’t now.

I am not sure what is wrong with how Adam is acting or responding . He is in charge of his career and his image and is stating so. I am one gay male that cheers his response to all this stupidity. I love his attitude. All of this is just stupid. And Rickey you are over-reacting.

I don’t think that he should stay in closet. However, there are different ways to handle the situation. If he wants its all about music, he should have play his sexuality in low-key way. Right now, all the publicity around him is related to his sexuality in certain degree.

He sold his sexuality in high profile(his music couldn’t get him the rolling stone cover) to gain publicity, then he should expect the kind of behaviors from others including the editor of Out. Now he pretends to take high road? What a douchebag, even bigger than the Out editor. In this kind of cat fight, everyone is loser. If Adam don’t want this to happen, he could simply turn down this interview.

Well, the problem with this whole issue is that Americans are way too sensitive, which makes things way more complicated than what they really are.
I think it’s good that Adam avoided the political topics because obviously no matter what he says he will get into trouble; even now, whether he buys OUT’s opinion or responds like what he did, he got criticized. If I were him, I wouldn’t respond to this issue at all. Although I think Adam is smart and classy, sometimes he talks too much, he may learn his lesson here: no matter what you say people will hate you for whatever reason, so maybe it’s pointless to even say anything. Well, this wouldn’t make me love Adam and his music any less. Whatever, I hope the haters’ comments would not bother Adam.

ah why cant everyone get over the sexuality issue and focus on his music? after all, its his music we’re concerned with and not his sexual choices. stop all this drama over such private issues, and just enjoy his music!

if bisexuality isn’t belong to straight community,why should bisexuality should belong to gay community?if straight world think adam is not straight enough,does gay community have same right to say adam is not gay enough?if straight person hate him because he is too gay ( because he had sex or kissed boy).does gay guy also can hate him because he is too straight ( because he had sex or kiss girl)?adam obviously don’t want to stay on straight world and also don’t want to stay on gay community.so who he can blame?

It does feel to an extent that the gay community is saying that Adam isn’t proud to be gay, or that he isn’t a good representation of them. Until Adam identifies himself in so many words as a role model for the gay community, I won’t consider him as such.

His response is perfectly valid in my eyes and when is it a crime to refuse to comment on certain issues? I’m not sure why Rickey is upset and maybe if he explained I would understand a little better, but as far as I can tell Adams actions are totally understandable.

OUT knew ahead of time. They should have respected Adam’s wishes. Or, are they using him to get publicity….?

If “OUT” magazine knew ahead of time that Adam wouldn’t be answering those types of questions…why did they even continue with the interview at all if that was going to be such an issue for them? And why the hell did they put him on the cover and name him the “breakout of the year” if they were so upset with him and his inability to answer those types of questions?

Sounds to me as if “OUT” magazine is trying to sell magazines, because frankly…before this whole debacle…I had NEVER even heard of that magazine!

That’s not true. The Rolling Stone interviewer said that Adam had the cover regardless of whether he’s coming out. RS was enamoured with him all season, gave him a two-page editorial spread while the competition was still going on and posted countless of other smaller articles on him. After the finale wrapped, they wrote an article on the outcome and basically went on and on about how Adam is Idol’s “first true rock star”, only adding “Kris Allen won” in the penultimate paragraph almost as a formality. RS is first and foremost a music magazine. Don’t confuse it with People, Us Weekly or Star
