(Here’s the Gleecap from our Gleetern Noelle for Glee: “Ballad.” Video clips in the end.)
This week on Glee, it’s all about everyone’s feelings and how best to get them out. With our group of kids that could have hilarious results. Will divides the group into mismatched duos to sing Ballads to each other. A story of what they’re feeling inside. But when one member of the group gets sick, Rachel is paired with Will and things get crazy. And by things, I mean Rachel.
The ballad duos pair together couples like Puck and Mercedes and Kurt and Finn. Yay! Finn and Kurt! What’s their shipper name? Kinn? Furt? Sounds like a foot ailment. Rachel decides to show off how well she can do a ballad with Mr. Schuester and chooses Endless Love. Oh boy. He can sense the dangerous waters he’s about to dive into. I think I’m falling in love like Rachel is but Will is practically running away from her as she serenades him. Rachel’s crush turns crazy quickly. She buys him gifts, follows him to his home and ends up cooking him dinner and cleaning his bathroom. I’ve never felt that way about my teachers.
Emma suggests that Will tell Rachel how awkward the situation is in a song to avoid hurting her feelings. He chooses the less subtle approach and sings Don’t Stand So Close To Me by The Police. It’s quite the performance and kind of backfires because now Emma, Rachel and myself are all in love with him. Sigh. In the end it takes a very direct approach (which is really the only way to get through to Rachel) and Will sits her down and tells her the whole thing is inappropriate. He gives her a pep talk about how she’ll find the right guy some day and everything is normal again.
Back to some real problems. Quinn has her Chastity Ball coming up which obviously brings about a rather large amount of predicaments. Besides the fact her parents still don’t know about the pregnancy, she has to invite Finn over for a meet-the-parents dinner. They seem like a couple of winners so Finn is understandably nervous. Finn is heartbroken his baby girl will never get to know him or know how much he loves her. I can’t imagine how he’s going to feel once Puck comes clean. Let it out in a ballad Finn!
With the help of Kurt, Finn chooses to explore his feelings by singing I’ll Stand By You by The Pretenders. It’s kind of weird watching a guy singing a ballad to a sonogram while he stands in front of a Dashboard Confessional poster. Finn’s mom walks in and doubles the embarrassment. Finn’s mom is now added to the list of people who know about the baby. Quinn is pissed that Finn told her and is angrily berating him in the hallway. She’s fired up and I think she just spouted a quote from Matilda.
The dinner with Quinn’s parents is pretty much the definition of disaster. Finn really didn’t help. Quinn’s parents find out that she’s pregnant because for some bizarre reason he decides to burst into song at the dinner table. And not just any song. You’re Having My Baby by Paul Anka. Blunt much? Quinn’s parents throw her out and it’s such a sad scene. Her dad wouldn’t even give her a hug or listen to what she had to say. Not cool.
But some people love you Quinn! Finale group performance as the Glee kids get together to show their support for Quinn and Finn by singing Lean On Me to them. Oh my gosh this is an awesome group song. Artie and Mercedes sound AMAZING together. Besides Kurt being in love with Finn and the quote from Finn saying he can’t stay on the phone too long in the bathroom or Quinn’s parents will think he’s pooping..this performance is my favorite part of this episode. I’m so glad Glee is back.
