Adam Lambert just tweeted to Aaron Hicklin, editor of OUT Magazine via Twitter:

“Dear Aaron, it’s def not that deep. Chill! Guess ya gotta get attention for the magazine. U too are at the mercy of the marketing machine.

Until we have a meaningful conversation, perhaps you should refrain from projecting your publications’ agenda onto my career.”

He also linked to an anti-gay post on fan site Planet Fierce.

Adam Lambert is now his own PR machine. It’s ironic that OUT complained about how 19E is “controlling” Adam’s career — and yet Adam has literally let loose on Twitter on his own.

I have one word for all of this: hubris. I am telling you, this is not going to end nicely.

I haven’t been a big fan of what Adam Lambert’s been doing lately, but on this issue he is right on. His response was precisely on-point, and the editors of OUT are opportunistic dicks. They should apologize.

I almost responded to this in a Fark thread, but I think here is probably more appropriate. Any group of people be they black, white, gay, straight, what-have-you wants to make a successful one of them to be the ultimate representative of them. In this case, what I assume to be (I’m straight) the more vocal side of the GLBT community (or maybe just it’s media, I dunno) want Adam to be THEIR ultimate representative. It’s all about vicarious success, to a certain extent, I guess.

I read the Planet Fierce post, and I had the following thoughts:

- Planet Fierce argues more or less that Adam Lambert’s album cover is proof that Out 100 could have done something more liberal with its cover of Adam. I’m not entirely sure about that. I believe that there may indeed be a stigma that might render famous people to be portrayed differently in gay media versus more sexual orientation irrelevant media. Maybe it’s because fans of Adam Lambert possibly range along a spectrum of acceptance of him being gay, and to play it safe to those certain fans on a certain point within that spectrum, Adam’s portrayal in Out 100 magazine is more carefully managed.

- Planet Fierce denounces the notion that the LGBT struggle for civil rights is akin to apartheid, comparing it to South Africa as a true example of apartheid. I have great respect for the history of South Africa. That said, I think that we should be cognizant of the universal meaning of the word apartheid (any system or practice that separates people according to demographic traits). Though the LGBT struggle is very different from the struggle in South Africa, there are elements akin to apartheid affecting the LGBT community (e.g. marriage for some vs. civil unions/domestic partnerships for others, most people in the military can be open about their significant others while some can’t because they’re gay), and a number of prominent LGBT civil rights leaders including David Mixner acknowledge an existing apartheid based on sexual orientation in America. I think the point to bring home is that all kinds of apartheid that exist should be acknowledged and respected for what they are in their own way and not compared to each other to argue each one’s validity, as that can result in further dehumanization, as I sensed in Planet Fierce’s post.

All that said, I respect Adam for his choice to concentrate on his music and express himself the way he wishes, as we should all have the right to do so, and I am grateful that someone like Adam exists to not only help bring down barriers in the music industry based on sexual orientation because of who he is but also make incredible music that I absolutely love. Conversely, someone like me, who is a civil rights advocate who also happens to be a musician, will express himself in his way by fighting for full equal civil rights and full integration of all people regardless of sexual orientation with YouTube videos and original songs for civil rights.

Adam’s freaking album is AMAZING!! Who cares about this fake crap?! Y’all are haters!!!!! This just shows that Adam is a SUPERSTAR because he can make controversy! Keep the people talking! Keep beign relevant!! GO ADAM!!!! (Notice how Kris Allen is virtually never talked about in comparison to Adam!!) =)

I don’t like Adam. Way to go on a temper tantrum and rant on your twitter without even tweeting to the Aaron guy. He’s not gonna do well like Kris is. Sorry but it’s true. Kris is very polite to all those who interview him and Kris is selling well. I bought Kris’s album on iTunes, but I just downloaded Adam’s from Limewire.
