Good song for her. Very good song and luckily it was a short enough song to resolve in the little time they have. Melinda’s did not. So yea, she was better tonight but I don’t think she is a better singer.
So I see the next 12 weeks as being a scorecard between KiKi and Melinda with a lot of filler lol

katiez I agree…I think she wins for tonight simply because she had a better song to work with. Melinda, IMO, is a much more dynamic performer and has more interesting colors in her voice. She is also more like-able I feel.
Plus, to be superficial, I really hate Lakisha’s manicure. Her fingers look like rabbit teeth. Just a little shorter please…it doesn’t look classy.

Great performance from Kiki. Even better than Melinda tonight. Do think Melinda is the more versatile vocalist though. But Lakisha is such a diva and has such presence! I see Melinda being a brilliant recording artist..R&B, Jazz. Simon was right .. a very young Gladys Knight. I see Lakisha as a dynamic and dazzling stage performer…Broadway!

Steph:
No the nails weren’t classy but put a new spin on the song for me. I’ve seen film of Billie, Dinah, Diana and Sarah sing the song and they are all classy but this is a song about the downtrodden inspiring the dissed cuz you po’ crowd (the have-nots). Coming from Kiki gave it a bite. Sure those singers didn’t start out rich and they could channel the meaning but the films were from when they were at the top.
When Kiki wrapped those claws around the mike and seethed the line
“money you’ve got lots of friends, crowded ’round the door, when you’re gone and spendin’s end they don’t come round no more”
- she sang it like the woman on the outside angry at the spectacle. It was raw and thrilling. A happening. I think she even preached.

Im very happy to see that there is at least a fight for the top spot. Melinda is still obviously going to win but at least LaKisha is still coming strong.

Good post, katiez. I agree, you could FEEL the raw emotion of that song when Kiki (don’t you just love that? Kiki!) sang “but don’t take too much.” I’ve heard many renditions, but hers was one of the best. Let’s be honest, as good as some of the other girls are, Kiki and Melinda are so far beyond anyone else that it’s almost a non-competition. Maybe they will force everyone else to ratch it up a notch. One can hope.

I adore the song, and Lakisha has an awesome voice. She definitely did it justice, but I think Melinda beat her again with her ingenious phrasing and perfect pitch, even though Lakisha had the better material to start with.

Not crazy about the nickname “Kiki”, especially for someone with her presence. The only time I wanna hear “Kiki” is when it’s paired with “Herb”. “LaKisha” has bold presence — and the “La” makes me think, “THE Kisha”. Like, “Some of you might be Kisha, girl, but I am THE Kisha.” See?
Whatever the name, though, she sure does, you know, like, BRING it.
A word about Diana. This was my fav Diana moment of the show.
I loved watching Diana switch into Mamma mode when she asked LaKisha what does her mother call her. Perfect way to warm up the audience for this song. Bringing back Motown tradition where those that made it mentored the young ones starting out and made them feel like kinfolk. The media loves to kick Diana, but they can’t take away her success as a singer AND as a mother.
Diana’s a strong woman who has been raising 5 kids for 4 decades in a crazy environment. We are so used to Celebrity brats who are out of control, Diana’s brood seem to beat the odds. I think the three girls are all Brown University grads. Tracee has a great acting career and the performance of Diana’s baby boy Evan in the movie “ATL” where he played T.I.’s wayward younger brother was so sincere, it was hard to believe he’s the son of a Motown legend and a Norwegian billionaire (Grandson of a Wehrmacht Major).
The best of the night!! I love this girl! Go Lakisha!

clearly its Kiki and Melinda to the finals…if there is any justice whatsoever that is…and we Idol fans know justice does not always happen so be sure to VOTE VOTE VOTE!!!! IMO Melinda’s performance was more dynamic personality wise but in reality both of them had perfect performances!

Strangely enough, LaKisha sounds better on the replay than she does live. She lacks personality and sometimes her lack of personality distracts from her vocals.
She sang beautifully tonight, but she really needs to develop who she is as a person in order to continue sharing in Melinda’s votes.

Perfection! Clearly the best performance last night. Lakisha and Melinda are definitely in a different league. I would love to see them in a final showdown. However, as always, people vote on looks and not talent. IT will probably be a showdown between Sanjaya and Chris Richardson
