She is just miles and miles above the competition. It’s like Chris last year. Even if she does get voted off early…she does not need to win this to do well in the industry. She is a fantastic…UNBELIEVABLE talent…if she can turn that song into something great…she can do anything. She is first class.

My post keeps generating an error and not posting, hmmm…
I think they need to send everyone else home and bring Melinda back to sing the whole song.
Paula was crying because she probably knows all the words. Melinda only sang like the last third and the beginning setup is crucial. Melinda is just beautiful. Hearing her sing “Home” makes me lose interest in everyone else’s performance. Even Simon was choked up by it.
Right now I just want her to sing the whole song from beginnig to end and I bet you everybody will start cryin’, unless of course they are mental.

I actually didn’t like the song b/c I would’ve loved to have heard her sing some longer notes.
She was perfec though.

Shes too perfect. I mean, theres no building up with her. She is always good and flawless and theres nothing wrong with any performance that the judges can point out so its just straight A’s accross the board. I wish someone would just hand her a contract right now, that way there would be at least a bit of competition left on the show.

I guess by now it doesn’t really matter if she stays or not, she’s going to have a succesful music career. I just hope she releases a good CD, since some of the other Idol alumni ended up making such blaaah and overly commercial cookie-cutter albums, like Bo Bice, a great rocker whose mojo got stolen with a mediocre album.

Part of the reason my admiration continues to grow is in the last two weeks she has taken on the most complicated songs and peformed them from first note to last flawlessly 100% of the time. Although I was no Carrie fan I gave that girl credit for almost perfect pitch. But she can’t touch Melinda’s ability to effortlessly sing every note perfectly so she has the freedom to also put personality and sincerity into each line. This I think is what separates her from Lakisha. Lakisha, who has an outstanding voice, performs a song as a showcase for the voice. Melinda showcases the song. The Gladys Knight – Chaka – Aretha comparisons are apt. Melinda is a natural. If she does not win, this show is not a talent show.

I gave it to Kiki tonight because she showed me something so completely new with “God Bless the Child”. I’ve heard both songs a million times and Melinda’s singing was fantastic but her arrangement bothered me from the start. Still after I heard Melinda, I expected nothing from the rest could compare. I was wrong.

Kiki chose a song that fit easily in the time limit and she owned it. It was like “Shut-up everybody!”
I have to give tonight to Kiki.
Last week was totally Melinda’s.
The week before that too (almost a tie)
the week before that was Kiki’s.

If you search for Melinda at allmusic.com you will see she has nearly 50 recording credits. She’s obviously in very big demand (much more than Brandon). Lakisha has none so she can be expected to spend more time finding herself as a singer during this show.

It’s like a Pro vs. Joe competition. Everyone else can go home.

Would love to know who Melinda used to sing backup for. Was she on stage or in the recording studio?

This would be like Angie Fisher or Quiana Parler returning to AI to take their rightful crown.

And as much as I love those two as singers, Melinda reigns supreme.

Beautiful voice, but is she marketable? Best of the night, vocally, but she’s definately adult contemporary. She looks 40. Hopefully the stylists can work with her and take some years off. She’s a GREAT singer, I’m just not sure how well she’ll be able to sell CD’s.

bloom2708…I believe what Melinda was referring to when she said “I haven’t heard this before for me” was in reference to the standing ovation SHE received from the audience, not from the standard reveiws she receives from the judges.

While it’s certainly your choice, you don’t have to be so cynical…there really ARE geniunly humble people out there. When I see her after each performance, she seems to have the look of joy and wonder that you would see in the face of a child. I really like her and think she’s a class act.

You seem to be a person of influence. If AI does a ’70s week, could you please tell your bff that Melinda should sing Randy Crawford’s “Street Life”.

She uses the vibrato like a lot of singers so the mini energy pulses give her singing more flexibility.However, with Melinda it’s not so constant like with Stephanie or Beyonce. I think its more flowing and beautifully controlled like Randy Crawford, Dinah Washington, Judy Garland and Niece-y Williams.

Randi Crawford has the record for the most number one singles on the UK charts. She was big here in the states in the 70s but in Europe she was still huge in the 90s when she was already 50, releasing new albums and selling out her tours.

I think Melinda could very well be this generation’s Randy Crawford.

If AI can make pop, rock, country, R&B, Broadway, and movie musical stars. Why not an Adult Contemporary star? And then maybe Melinda can pave the way for a great jazz vocalist next year. And all this week by week focused comparison on great live singing, overtime, just may improve young Americas musical appreciation. Of course that could lead to no welcome mat for Britney Spears’ or the Spice Girls’ comeback God forbid.

The AI audience may have learned their lesson post-Jennifer Hudson and maybe AI slowly is teaching the bubble gum set the difference between great voice and great hype.

katiez, what you’re saying about Melinda is what people said about Taylor last year. “He’s gonna bring some old school ‘real’ music back”. It didn’t happen. Granted, Melinda is a thousand times better singer than Taylor, but what you’re describing is too lofty for mass media. Its not about art, its about trends, unfortunately. Its also youth-driven. Melinda’s only 29, but don’t you think she seems so much older than the other contestants? That’s wont hurt her on Idol, where the voting public seems to skew older, and if they market her as an adult contemporary artist….. who knows? But then they should stop criticizing the contestants for being “too old” or keep pressuring them to be current and just run with the whole AC thing.

She usually just blows off Paula’s crying or ignores it, but he is holding his mouth before he speaks already chocked up and not using Paula’s laughter as an excuse.

I think Simon was actually overcome with emotion. Never thought I’d see it but his face was all red, he turned away and shielded his face from the camera at one point, “sneezed,” and then for an instant he was having trouble speaking without his voice cracking. Wow. It’s like the end of the Grinch who Stole Christmas when he heart grew 10 sizes (or whatever.)

mg, I am with you! While I can respect a person’s personal preferences and tastes, to say that Melinda shouldn’t be in the competition because she is better than professionals on the radio is ridiculous! It is refreshing to have a couple REAL singers in this competition! I am also tired of people attacking her for being a bit meek and shy when she is being judged. I know a LOT of actors and singers who are totally different on stage than off. Several friends and family members have stated from day one that she really is like that, and it may explain why she has been a background singer for so long. Her crying was due to her feelings of getting a standing ovation by a huge crowd on national TV! Melinda is amazing, and she is the only reason I watch this season. hello all you Doolittle junkies…it’s only my 2nd season of AI and I’m more hooked this year than I was last year on Elliott. I didn’t think it was possible.

After reading the anti-Melinda posts on a page dedicated to her, I can’t help but wonder what you get out of bashing her. She’s probably one of the most talented AND sincere contestants I’ve seen and not deserving of the petty comments.

In my perfect world, AI would change the rules midstream and turn the next 11 weeks into the Melinda, Lakisha (and even Jordin show). The boys simply have not been up to par and I’m not looking forward to another excrutiating performance from any of them.

Really, all I’m here to say is Dr. Doolittle, you do much for me!

The masses were previously led to their taste by Radio DJs and the like. American Idol presents a new forum and it’s showing influence.

Still, I don’t think Melinda should compete for the pop scene here. I look at Randy Crawford who is phenomenally successful Europe. And, Tina Turner who through the 80s/90s was bigger than Madonna in Europe.

I think AI can help Melinda land a recording contract but she should look Internationally for her market. A lot of successful American artists who are superior musicians have found greater success when they don’t restrict themselves to America’s pop music taste. Maybe its best she doesn’t win, the exposure frees her up to work with folks used to handling artist with her type of talent not just suck her into popland.

No need to drag out the competition anymore! They should just give American Idol title to her. No disrespect to the other contestants, but she and Lakisha (and maybe Jordin) make them look like amateurs. I watched all episodes of the previous seasons closely because all the contestants are pretty much on the same level. But for this season, I could tell right from the audition that there’s no need to keep the competition going because she’s so far ahead of the rest of the group!

Garden girl … agree with you completely. She’s a beautiful singer, but her style and what she seems to want to sing are just not interesting to me. I would MUCH rather go to a concert by one of my three top guys, Chris S, Blake, and Chris R because they are going to be more current and interesting. Sorry, not really into all the jazzy stuff by someone who does indeed look like she is he forties and gives that stupid deer in the headlights look … it’s kind of like watching kelly pickler respond to questions … it’s like, you don’t really have to act so dumb!

That is so sad that there are people out there that can hate on such a gift Melinda has. People, there are humble people out there in the world. That’s the first gift she has. She seen this as a opportunity to break out of her shell and do what I’m probably sure many of people have encourage her to do all of her life. It’s negative people like those who leave foolish comments that have kept her back. I say, you go girl, shine. It’s your time to make it happen. American Idol is suppose to expose those people with talent, not people wanting to know how to sing. She deserves her props. Don’t hate. If she don’t win I think they need to rename the show “Learn to be an American Idol.” She got this competition hands down. Lakisha also belongs in the competition. Melinda happens to be my favorite. As for the others, showtime at the apollo would have been a better ideal.

That just doesn’t make any sense. The fact you brought up Chris S., Chris R. and Blake shows how transparent you are. I didn’t hear anyone last season talking about how unmarketable Taylor Hicks was. And as I’ve been on many AI boards, it amazes me how fans of these other singers not only go beyond their idolization of them by putting down others that they feel are a serious threat, but how enormous the ‘racial’ overtones are. Yes, I said it since no one else didn’t. This woman could be the most marketable singer ever and they are ’some’ ppl who would have an issue with it b/c of her skin color. Not saying you do, but we do know there is a lot of racism beyond fanaticism that goes on when it comes to which singers each person prefers.

katiez, just read your comment. Sorry for the delay. The problem is that RCA will sign the winner and they have to be willing to go the AC or jazz route. I don’t have high hopes because they didn’t sign Elliott and there were rumors of problems with Taylor.
I have to admit that I don’t know who Randy Crawford is. I will do some research promptly. I don’t think RCA will be into selling the American Idol exclusively in Europe, so you may be right about losing being the best thing for Melinda. I think that may happen anyway due to some backlash (bacause she’s been the obvious favorite from the start) or just voter negligence (people thinking she’s safe) or VFTW, lol. But when it does happen, please come back and calm the sure-to-be-hysterical “Gails” down.

Her comment about crying because she’s never heard anything like that from herself before was an incredible moment!!! It reminded me of the seabiscuit story in that she has always been held back and not able to show what she is really capable of as a solo forefront artist….held back because she has been a background singer. Now look at her go, she’s at the front of the pack EVERY SINGLE TIME! If she makes it to the home stretch because of people rightly voting for “talent,” she will WIN the race!!! Whoot!!!

I would just like to say that Melinda is by far the most talented contestant this season. I like a lot of the other singers and think that they are pretty good, but honestly Melinda is in her own category and the others need to step up to level, which is almost impossible because many of them are just not there really. After all, this is a singing competition and despite the fact that one might not like her music genre does not rule out her excellence. And for those with the negative comments about her appearance, my suggestions for you are to seek out your own insecurities and try to fix them and figure out why you are so unhappy in your life that you must criticize others…this is particulary for SZJODIC

This reminds me of America’s Got Talent and everyone know including myself that Bianca Ryan would win from the getgo. Melinda is the next winner. No Doubt. As Brandy said about Bianca, I say about Melinda – INCREDIBLE!!!
