This week on Ugly Betty, Betty is overcome with the feeling of being unneeded. Between Matt asking someone else as his date to Wilhelmina’s fundraiser and Daniel hiring his new assistant, things are changing too fast for her liking. Her problems are minimal compared to what Wilhelmina and Nico are still dealing with but everything may not be as it seems. More Marc please.

Wilhelmina is holding a fund-raiser for Tibetan orphans and it seems like everyone is going. Not wanting to go alone and because they seem to be on the same page lately, Betty thinks about asking Matt to be her plus one. Unfortunately, he has plans of his own and is already thinking of asking someone else leaving Betty in quite the jam. Poor girl. Matt what is wrong with you? Amanda still has a crush on Matt and gets her wish when he asks her to be his date for the fund-raiser. Great news for Amanda until she realizes she needs to tell Betty.

Daniel decides to take some steps in moving forward with his life and hires Natalie as his new assistant. He asks Betty to show her the ropes. Natalie wastes no time in making herself at home and Betty starts to feel replaced. I don’t blame her because Natalie is kind of rude. Trying to cling to what once was, Betty hopes she at least still has her friendship with Daniel and waits to meet him for lunch. Being the boob that he is, he shows up late and brings Natalie with him. Rude. I feel so bad for Betty. Desperate for a date to Willie’s party she asks Daniel to go with her. Awkwardly he’s taking Natalie but lets Betty know she’s more than welcome to hang with them. Nice. Everyone wants to be a third wheel Daniel. As if Natalie isn’t getting in the way enough, she talks to Daniel about how needy Betty is and actually gets him to tell her off. Not cool. Friendship first always. I do not like this Natalie character. I wonder what her secret is.

In a little dose of karma, Daniel gets an unpleasant surprise when he walks into his mother’s office. In the “I saw this coming a mile away” category, Claire is making out with Hartley on their desk. Turns out it’s nothing new and it’s been going on since before he came to work for Meade. Daniel storms out and doesn’t want to hear about it. He really doesn’t want any drama in his life. We find out Hartley got Claire pregnant while they were having an affair and she gave it up for adoption. What? How did no one realize she was pregnant and gave the baby away? Maybe i’m missing something.

We finally return to the Nico subplot. The detective is back and he’s found a bloody thumbprint belonging to Nico from the night she supposedly killed her boyfriend. Coming out of left field, he wants to blackmail Wilhelmina over the picture for some fast cash. Loser. Dont mess with Willie. She conjures up a plan, tells Marc the truth about the situation and they try to find dirt on the detective. They realize the entire time he’s been using a fake identity. So who is he really? He’s actually Nico’s boyfriend and they together are blackmailing Wilhelmina for the money. Bitch. Poor Willie can’t catch a break even with her daughter.

Amanda tries to soften the blow in telling Betty about Matt by setting her up with someone for the party. Predictably she puts no thought into it and takes out an ad on Craigslist leaving Betty with a lovely selection of creepers. Betty’s over it and decides to go by herself. Good for you! She shows up lookin great and determined to have a good time. Amanda confronts Betty and is about to tell her that she’s meeting Matt when Matt walks in with someone else. Gasp. He’s breaking hearts all over. Betty and Matt have a moment and the episode ends as they play Dancin’ With Myself. Betty does just that and rocks it out on the dance floor enjoying her independence. You go girl! See what you’re missin Matty?

I loved the season premier, was a little disappointed last week, but this week was awesome again.

Great recap! One more thing (there’s so many subplots and I love how they interweave them!) — we see that Natalie is pulling Daniel into some sort of weird cult. Shades of Kelly in the old BH 90210?

Maybe Claire told everyone she was going to some kind of rehab program (she was an alcholic for 20-something years), had the baby, gave him up, came back home and no one was the wiser. That’s the only thing I can figure.
