Here’s Desi’s recap of tonight’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy: Invest In Love

Grey’s Anatomy starts this week with a medley of beeping pagers, doctors being called to the hospital at 4 in the morning. Meredith’s voice-over explains all the problems that are associated with pages in the middle of the night. Callie, Arizona and Cristina rouse themselves out of bed and rush to the hospital where they’re faced with a pregnant woman who’s been in a bad accident. Arizona calls for a crash c-section as the baby has a brain bleed, and Callie starts to reassemble the woman’s fractured legs.

While rounding later in the day, Arizona gives a speech about pediatric patients: that there is fairy dust in their IVs (my mom just had surgery and there was certainly fairy dust in her IV) and that they recover differently than adults. She introduces the residents to an eleven-year-old patient with intestinal problems who has been living in the hospital for seven months. His parents decide to make a contribution to the hospital in honor of Walter’s birthday… a $25 million dollar donation for Arizona to research cures for his condition.

Izzie still hasn’t returned after being fired by the Chief, and the board has been pressuring him to collect on her medical bills. I guess residents don’t have fantastic health care coverage either, because as her next-of-kin, Alex is left with a $200,000 medical bill.

I still hate most of the Mercy West residents, and I especially want Reed to get fired. Dr. Avery, though, can stick around. I approve of medical shows and Shane West-lookalikes, but I don’t like the idea of these new kids being regulars on our show. They don’t really seem like they fit in.

Bailey finds Alex in the NICU, holding a baby in the “kangaroo” position. She notices that the baby’s pulse and temperature increase as he’s holding her. And then Bailey blesses women across the nation: “Take your shirt off.” Alex is insulted and tells Bailey to take hers off first, but she offers some medical explanation about the skin contact helps the babies. So off the shirt comes, and off the shirt stays for the remainder of the episode. Thank you, @god.

Wallace’s parents confront Arizona about Wallace having surgery, and she explains that it’s not likely he’ll survive the surgery as illustrated by new x-rays. She initially refuses, but Chief Webber explains that these parents aren’t people who hear the word “no,” and that if Arizona won’t do the surgery, they’ll find someone else who will. She agrees to operating, after making Callie tell her that she is great and that she can do the surgery and that the patient will survive.

Before Arizona’s surgery, the rest of the team is operating on a teenager who had fallen off a building while high on shrooms, thinking she could fly. A complication on her heart develops and without a cardio surgeon in the room, Cristina jumps in to perform the procedure that will save the patient’s life since it will take cardio too long to respond. Owen initially prevents her but she executes the procedure anyway, saving the patient’s life, with help from Dr. Avery. After the surgery, Owen lectures her about everything that could have gone wrong and how she wouldn’t have insurance to protect her since she isn’t authorized for cardiovascular procedures.

Arizona goes in to comfort Wallace before his surgery, and he talks about how he’s scared of death because so many other kids on the floor have died instead of going home when they are scheduled. I thought this scene was really well-written and seemed a lot like how kids probably feel about death. Wallace survives the operation and Arizona goes home to pick a fight with Callie. “You’re scared so you’re picking a fight with me,” Callie says. Cristina and Owen come in, yelling about their own fight earlier, and all the couples fight about their own problems.

Wallace starts to crash and Arizona tries to control the damage, but the damage is too extent and he dies on the table. She goes home, sad and sullen, but opens the door instead to a surprise party thrown by Callie, Mark and Lexie. Arizona storms out crying, followed by Callie, and Mark restates his belief that nothing good comes of surprise parties. The rest of the doctors stay (”Free booze!” Avery says before attempting to hook up with Cristina) and continue to drink.

Alex doesn’t leave the hospital, just cuddles with the baby overnight because he doesn’t know what else to do without Izzie. I don’t really like that they’ve tried to force all the doctors into pediatrics at some point, but I do want Alex to adopt the baby. He needs something good to happen. Cristina invites Owen back to her apartment for the first time since he attacked her in his sleep, and the episode closes with Callie throwing a private party for Arizona, exchanging “I love yous” for the first time in the sweetest Grey’s scene I remember in a long time.

I definitely spoke too soon when I said that we were going back to old Grey’s, because this episode was so disappointing. I love Arizona, but I miss great scenes with MerDer (they each had one scene in this episode… how can you have a show where the titular character is in ONE scene?) and Mark and Lexie were sorely absent in this episode too. Izzie’s return next week should bring more of the focus back to the original interns, along with the drama and angst the show was built on.
