Anoop Desai sang an original song at the NC State Fair last night. He also sang “Down” by Jay Sean.

The original was composed by Anoop and David Mikush. I am assuming the title is “Give In To Her Love”.

I question the choice of “Down” — because you know, Jay Sean is awesome, and it makes Anoop really look like a karaoke singer trying to copy the biggest pop singer now of Indian ethnicity. Maybe there’s room for another one in U.S. pop music, who knows. But the comparison is inevitable and he’s set himself up for that. But then again, maybe people just won’t care.

Go indie, Anoop. Get all your friends, and friends of your friends, to write their best songs for you then live off the Internet. Many former Idols “have moved to LA” after the tour, and most have back one year later empty-handed. Time to think out of the box.

rickey why bring ethnicity into this? calm dowm he probably chose the song couse he liked it not becouse of ethnicity.what about all the other songs he covered by white/black artists? i guess some peole are not capable of looking beyond race & ethnicity.its just a concert enjoy it & move on .

People will compare, that’s all. And knowing what Anoop wants to do with his career (which is get signed), he can’t compete with Jay Sean.

In this business it’s about image and getting people to talk about you, etc. It’s not just singing ability, and after 8 years, not just being on American Idol. Jay Sean is enjoying some popularity right now with his hit and being backed by one of the hottest labels. Maybe Jay Sean’s success will open the floodgates for Anoop when Indian R&B/Soul artists become the flavor of the month for music labels, maybe not. My first impression was just, oh, he’s trying to be like Jay Sean.

And the same thing goes with the other songs he has sung. It’s so obvious that Anoop wants to be Ne-Yo or Chris Brown. And that is also karaoke. I am equally opportunity with ethnicty.

Anoop was at his best on American Idol when he did “My Prerogative” because he made that song fresh. For most of the other stuff, he was trying to copy someone else. There’s already a Jay Sean, there’s already a Ne-Yo. We want to see “Anoop”. If “Anoop” is copying other R&B singers, then that just won’t work. He didn’t even do anything special with it — and Jay Sean sings “Down” on some guest appearances acoustic!

It’s unfair for all the Lil Rounds and Melinda Doolittles of the world to be compared to Whitney, the Neal Boyds to be compared to Paul Potts, but that’s just how the business works.

Rickey, I have to disagree. I don’t think Anoop is trying to be Ne-Yo, Chris Brown, Jay Sean, etc….I think this concert was for his true fans. I don’t think it was about getting signed. He sang a lot of songs that his fans wanted to hear him sing, and he had fun tonight. And really, how could he change all these songs when he only had about a month to put this all together. And you haven’t mentioned anything about his original song. I think it’s a great vibe for him. He sounds amazing!

Let me chime in here. Anoop seems to be a “better” song writer than he is singer, and I stated that about Jared Cotter(?)….and some of the Idols are better song writers than they are singers/performers, so they should do what comes best to them. Anoop should probably be like GAGA and get a rep as a songwriter first and then transit over to performer. But right now, he is just another singer from the AI stable. Nothing special.
If AI does nothing else for its contestants, it at least opens the doors to their dreams and they see the possibilities. That doesn’t mean they are all “singers” or performers and need to be the “star.” Chris Sligh made that point.
Sometimes it’s just good enough to make a living. Hey — it’s better than flipping burgers.

Rickey makes good points….and they’re the same points the judges make….find your “style”….don’t copy…and I think Anoop is going to find that a bit hard to do.

Rickey, the music industry is full of copy cats. Megan Joy = Adele mixed with Duffy. Lil Rounds = Whitney Houston Mary J Blige. Beyonce. Allison Iraheta = Kelly Clarkson Avril Lavigne Demi Lovato.

And there is plenty of copy cats out there right now trying to get signed but they all need a new twist. Like say Lil wants to be like Beyonce. She can’t because there already is one. Maybe she could be but most likely not. If she would want to get signed, she’d have to mix her music with something new say like Electro rapping soul rnb singing. Or start a band and be the first beyonce band.

Get it? Point is, nobody in the music industry is original anymore. They’re all copycats with different twists. Avril Lavigne and Demi Lovato and Allison Iraheta all have that spunky teenage attitude except Avril is now blonde, Demi has dark brown hair, and Allison has red hair.

Like Simon wanted to turn Megan Joy into the american adele with a few twists cause that would sell and be more interesting.

That’s what Anoop has to do. Change it up a bit. Like throw in some country electro 90’s music or something or else no recording contract for Desai.

Anoop is Anoop why he wanted to be a copycat like somebody else are you serious? that’s a NCState fair he just finished his AI tour. Ricky, you said Get all your friends, and friends of your friends, to write their best songs for you then live off the Internet. He made this concert for his fans and friends if you don’t like it move on. If he turn empty handed who cares. ANOOP already knew who is he as an artist. Give him a break..

@Marie, since when was Anoop a better song writer than a singer? This is the first song he co-wrote. He didn’t even write it by himself.

@Rickey, I bet he sang down because it was a popular suggestion by fans, not because he wants to be compared to Jay Sean. It’s true there are not many Asian-British, Asian-American pop stars, so you can’t really get away from the comparison.

Anoop can be Anoop. He proved it with the first song. It sounds nothing like Ne-yo, Jay Sean, or other current R&B popstars. The other songs were mostly fan requests. And most wanted him to sing current hits. This concert was more like a good bye to North Carolina.

It’s hard to be original when your covering songs. When Anoop releases some original pieces, then we can judge whether he’s impersonating someone else.

Lia and Bebo: You guys misunderstood what I wrote. I wasn’t making those statements about Anoop, but about AIs in general. Let’s face it out of the 100 or so AIs who were finalists, only 1% can be considered “successful”…Constantine, Kelly, Carrie, Jennifer, (maybe) Fantasia….not many.

That’s what I mean, that the AIs at least get to live their dream. A lot of them I pray for, because they keep chasing that dream and it never comes true so they end up doing things they wouldn’t normally do for a living.

All AIs contestant they’re successful in there own way career wish it happened they need to be waiting. Sarver and Alexis Grace the two are lucky because they’re country singer Anoop is pop/R&B. As far as I know AI is one of the biggest influences for the youth to show there talent and also stepping stone to get in into the business industry is the part of your for polio and you are lucky enough to be part of top 36 and top 12. It’s up to ANOOP to find his way to pursue his dreams. GOOD LUCK for HIM.

@kat when u say that anoop sounds like jay Sean is a compliment because jay sean’s voice in that song has a lot of studio effect and some auto tune. Anoop sang LIVE and sang every note almost flawlessly! If u listen to jay sean’s accoustic version of “down” it does not sound good at all. Myy point? Anoop sang that song wonderfully and didn’t even need studio effect. That’s talent! #signanoopdedsi
