Danyl Johnson sang “And I Am Telling You” from Dreamgirls on the first live performance show on X-Factor. Woohoo!

Dannii Minogue however made a controversial comment during the critique: ‘No need to change the gender references, if we’re to believe everything we read in the press,’ in reference to Danyl’s bisexuality. This ticked Simon Cowell off bigtime.

I think that the title of this article is completely unacceptable. Dannii did not ‘diss Danyl for being bisexual.’ What she did do was make an unnecessary comment about his sexuality. By telling him that he didn’t need to change the song lyrics to address a woman, because he is bisexual, she was pretty much telling him to be proud of his sexuality. Yes, it was a bizarre comment, yet it was unneeded, as his performance was spectacular, but was it homophobic? Absolutely not. Dannii’s been a campaigner for Gay and Lesbian rights for years and has performed more times at G-A-Y than I can remember. A homophobic comment is not the same as an unecessary comment about someone’s orientation. I hope you post this comment, even if it goes against your views.

The fact remains there was NO reason whatsoever to bring up Danyl’s sexuality other than to try to hurt his chances of getting votes. He was obviously embarassed about having his PERSONAL business brought to the stage. If she’s such a big GAY advocate she should have known better than to mention that in the first place. She knew what she was doing and it was absolutely inappropriate. Get her off the show.

I have been waiting for you to post on this since I watched X-Factor tonight! I couldn’t believe Dannii’s comment! I was more the way she said it than anything….she said it as though it was something scandalous! I thought Simon handled it well, but when I watched the Xtra Factor and they were interviewing everyone right after the show, Danyl still looked shook up. I felt so bad!!!

Danyl has entered a career which will be subjected to comment by all and sundary. If he is not comfortable with his sexuality he should have chosen a more secluded profession. However I think he done an amazing job at the first live show and he should be proud of who he is.

Why? Is being gay humiliating TO YOU?? Danni’s question although inappropriate was innocent, its everyone’s reaction to it thats comparing being gay as “humiliating, shameful, embaressing”.Anyone happy and comfortable with there sexuality would have accepted this comment along with all the other far hurtful ‘you haven’t won it yet’ comments.Danyl entered this comp knowing his private life would be exposed, so shouldn’t act hurt when a perfectly logical comment is made regarding his song, (remember it was a comment regarding his songs change of wording, not a direct ‘I ‘m out to expose you’ attack of some kind

I only watched the performance. He’s off key in too many places. He’s nasal in others. It’s not a great song to showcase his talents anyway. His Joe Cocker was good fun. He apparently doesn’t feel this song; maybe dramatic songs are not his thing. Anyway, he’s not even just okay here. I doubt if he’s going anywhere in the U.S.

Is Dannii any relation to Kylie? It looked to me like an awkward attempt at being cheeky with the contestant, but it clearly backfired. “If you believe what you read in the papers” sounds more like a joke about the rumor-mongering than Danyl’s sexuality. Ah, well. Live and learn, Dannii.

That was completely off-base and uncalled for on Dannii’s part, and I’m glad Simon called her out on it. His sexuality has nothing to do with the competition. Maybe her motives were innocent, but it certainly seemed like an a..hole move to me.

This was his best performance since his audition. Too bad it had to be tainted by accusations (about his perceived cockiness) and fighting among the judges.

I think he said “I’m not ashamed”.

I don’t think the comment was homophobic, but it was certainly inappropriate and awkward and it made me cringe. Danyl is a good singer and performer, but he’s not as talented as some people are making him out to be. I don’t think it was the best performance ever, as Simon said, in fact I think that same song has been performed better by other contestants that weren’t put through to the final 12. He could win the competition, cos I don’t think any of this year’s contestants really stand out based on what I’ve seen so far, but I do agree that he comes across as cocky and a bit unlikeable, even if he’s not like that in person.

Anyway, fingers crossed that we’ll be waving goodbye to the twins from Hell tomorrow evening.

Danni is a complete tool! What the hell was that about?!?!?!?! Who gives a S H I T what sexuality he is, she didn’t make belittling comments to the pole dancers/strippers! I always hated her as a judge and that has just topped me over the edge i HATE her, she needs 2 be kicked off the show or certainly publicly repremanded and forced to apologise on the next show. Although this will probably make him feel equally awkward. She should just leave. She looks like a horse anyway and she’ll never live up to her sisters greatness, she needs to accept that!

If Danni made a comment like that in any other workplace, she would be sitting in an HR office right now discussing sexual harassment!
It may not have meant to have sounded like it did – but why say it unless she did mean something by it. And another thing – does she really have to say ‘Miss Walsh’ about 20 times an episode!
Danni should be removed from the judging panel, if all she can do is judge sexuality and not the singing performance!

I have followed Danni for many years, but don’t think I will be buying any more of her music if she has 1950’s attitudes like that!

I’ve loved him since his first audition. He’s great. I don’t think he’s cocky at all. I think he is confident, which is a good think if you are planning to be on stage. It’s what a lot participants are missing while being on a talen show.
I had the feeling the other judges were trying to bring him down, because he is the biggest competition.

WTF is the point of suggesting he somehow got it wrong or was trying to HIDE behind a false reference…if he’s BISEXUAL? Obviously, if he’s bisexual then there was nothing wrong w/ the lyrics, even if he didn’t keep the original lyrics. People change references all the time when covering songs.

Danii went way over the line by 1) shoving the whole topic into our faces [wink, wink], 2) suggesting Danyl was a big poser, and 3) trying to act cool and clever [putting the spotlight on herself].

Simon should sack her. This has nothing to do w/ her previous work on LGBT issues or whether she thought she was joking w/ Danyl, but everything to do with her attempt to use the so-called joke on live t.v. as some sort of block on her own shoulder.

The male judge was right. He’s cocky. And he’s mediocre. Simon puzzles me. And I don’t think I’ll watch AI again with him on it, after seeing how he judges overseas. Totally two different ways of judging and giving criticism. And his pick for talent is “mediocre.”

I think she should have been more tackful and not mentioned it at all..it’s a singing competition…we all would have “died’ had they mentioned Adams’ sexuality on the show….it has no place in the comments, …and as he said” I am not ashamed !”..I felt so bad for him, almost like he had to defend himself…..Hello !! What about the singing…this is what the show is about!!!

I like Dannii as the judge on X-Factor. She’s fair, not overly emotional like Louis and Cheryl, and she has been picking great singers in her category for past 3 seasons.

Meanwhile, Simon is getting more and more full of himself. That song is disgustingly horrible on Danyl. The first half was ridiculously low and not exciting, boring and over-indulgent. The screaming was ok. But as what everybody else has put, he’s mediocre! His 1st audition was out of tune in many parts, and he’s only in tune when he screams high notes. his 2nd audition deserves him to be booted off. his 3rd was ok. he needs more than just his cute face, and ‘great’ 1st audition.

Why would anyone want to watch “Australian Idol” with all those ugly Australians on it? Try pitting Danyl’s charisma and sex appeal against Stan Walker’s pudginess and bad teeth, and it’s not hard to predict which one’s more likely to climb the charts in Europe and America.

The performance was not that bad, and everyone should give Dannii a break.

Ok I’m confused. I admit I have never heard him sing before, so this was the first time. I am really confused though. Simon said that was the best singing he has ever heard? What? I honestly didn’t think it was that good. Ok I take that back, it was good, but it certainly wasn’t great. A standing O for that? Simon must judge differently over there than he does on Idol. He barely cracks a smile while judging here, but was all smiles on the video. I would honestly say the Season 8 Idols Top 6 were all better than this guy. Maybe the quality is inferior there? Someone who watches this show, please explain this to me. I’m not trying to be harsh, but seriously confused by this.

Oh and as far as the remark she made, very uncalled for.

ImConfused: Look at his audition on YouTube (it’s the video with 8 million hits). He may not be the greatest singer, but he’s one heck of an entertainer when he pulls out all the stops.

On this show, each judge mentors 3 contestants making it a competition between the judges to have the winning act. Since Simon is mentoring Danyl, he’s got a vested interest in keeping him in the competition.

There is no question about his sexuality. He told the press he was bi in interviews after his first audition was televised. It’s nothing like the situation with Adam where everyone was arguing about whether he was or was not gay.

okay, so you sung a great last note. the rest of the performance was lackluster. it wasn’t strong vocals. i think everyone is developing a love for him based on who he is and now the quality of his vocals. i mean, bring him over to the US and have him try the stuff he just tried now and i don’t think people would be saying the same thing.
