Adam Lambert successfully auctioned off a jacket he wore on the American Idol tour for $2000. The winner just won a jacket with 2 swastikas on it. Wasn’t the swastika a symbol of the Nazis? Or was it used here as the Hindu-thing? Someone explain!

And if you listen to Adam singing Whole Lotta Love backwards, you hear Stairway to Heaven which we all know had messages about Satan if that is payed backwards, which would make Adam singing WLL forwards, but maybe it is sideways or upside down. 1. I see squiggles in the middle of the symbols – does that change the symbol? As in, make it something else? Or is he trying to say no to those? The other symbols are supposedly for peace. . .

Rickey, please check your facts. Adam did not auction this vest off. Someone else did. I think you’ve been getting alot of flack lately for some of your posts. I was just ignoring what people were saying. But, here again you’re just quoting VFTW, without checking out the story at all. As you know VFTW, of course, has the idols best interest at heart and would never exaggerate or twist a story. As far as the symbol is concerned, isn’t it obvious that Adam wouldn’t have been wearing it under that context.

This is an ancient symbol. Swastika-shaped ornaments dates from the Neolithic period and was first found in the Indus Valley Civilization of the Indian Subcontinent. It even occurs today in the modern day culture of India, sometimes as a geometrical motif and sometimes as a religious symbol. It also remains widely used in Eastern and Dharmic religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. Independently, the same symbol also is used by the Hopi and Navajo.

Actually, you guys are not looking closely enough. the swastika actually has the ends going a different way. What you are looking at on this jacket is the Hindu version. The difference is subtle, but instead of going one direction for the ends, it goes a different way. Just look up the different types.

Adam Lambert did not auction off the jacket. It was someone who has auctioned off other Idol outfits after previous Idol tours. Adam had nothing to do with it and didn’t gain anything from it. I know this because I communicated with the person who sold it, asking him to prove it was authentic. He couldn’t or wouldn’t. Why wouldn’t you check facts before posting something like this, Rickey? The swastika is known as a powerful symbol and for centuries (pre-Hitler) it was recognized as a symbol of luck, life, etc. The Jewish culture even used a version of it. There is a movement underway to “reclaim the Swastika” and bring it back to it’s origins of good rather than evil.
Adam is very “new age-y” and I suspect drawing this on the jacket or wearing a jacket with the symbol on it was his mis-guided attempt to do that….to turn the symbol back into something represeting good. Adam has never publicly spewed hate towards anyone or anything. In fact, quite the opposite. He’s constantly talking about spreading “love and light” and fusses at his fans for any kind of negativity. That said, even as an Adam fan, I am disappointed by his choice to wear the symbol. I think it shows very poor judgement. For millions and millions of people that symbol will always represent the hate of the Holocaust not matter who’s wearing it and why.

I have a Buddhist friend at work who was born in Taiwan and she wears a pendant with the swastika on it, she explained to me that in the Buddhist religion it means love and mercy.

She did have a few people scoff at her but when she explained what it meant they were quite receptive and were glad that its real meaning was explained to them.

I agree that this post seems like it was posted to get peoples backs up and cause some “drama”, this may or may not have been Ricky’s intentions but either way this was posted with ignorant information and the true meaning should have been researched by Ricky and ALL of the facts should have been given.

@Sam, I agree with you that the auction itself is a side issue, but it was incorrect. As for the symbol, It just seems so obvious that a Jewish man would not intentionally wear a swastika. They are so small it’s far more likely that he didn’t even know they were there. I can see if someone boldly wore one it would be completely different. But for VFTW to make this seem like it had that intent is ridiculous.

I am a practicing Buddhist. My father was a professor of East Indian Studies at UCB in the 1970’s.

The Swastika, is indeed, considered by many a symbol of “love and mercy” –and a symbol found inter-woven throught many cultures in history. It is not only to be found to have roots in ethe Far Eastern culture(s), but within European one (s) as well –the Celts, the Finnish (and believe it or not)and Slavic, to name a few.

This subject came up before via VFTW, but recieved little play. I suppose they’re bored and thought to give this story another go. Perhaps, it is, ultimately a good thing, in that, it may bring the tradional view of the Swastika (svástika {Sanscrit orgins.}), by many in Idoland at least:), of something else taken by the Nazis and twisted into something it traditionally never, ever was meant to be.. and placed it up for discussion and into proper view.

The symbols on the jacket are swastikas but I think it is obvious that they are NOT meant as Nazi swastikas considering that Adam is Jewish and gay (both revealed in his RS interview).

As many of us have stated most likely they represent the eastern swastikas (that were used in ancient Hinduism, Jainism, or Buddhism) or even the ancient Native American versions.

This just seems like a faux-controversy that is meant as a hit piece.

IF it had been a Nazi symbol, surely someone at the Tour wouldn’t have allowed it to be worn. And I think it is obvious that Jewish gay liberal Adam is NOT a Nazi sympathizer. Nazi sympathizers are usually right wing conservative Christians.

The swastika as used on the jacket is clearly not the Indian religious symbol, which is made up of vertical/horizontal lines AND often dots, but is rather the Nazi symbol which is made up of diagonal lines without dots.

Also, the graphic containing it is more typical of NSBM heavy metal art than it is anything associated with Indian religions. I fail to understand how people defending the Nazi swastika can just gloss over this point.

I’m not entirely convinced that this photo is real. But if it is, Adam has a lot of explaining to do, because as a gay Jew, he would be a prime target for extermination. I hope he isn’t that stupid. Also, as a popular entertainer with many young fans, he shouldn’t be promoting symbols of hate. At least, not if he intends to have more than fifteen customers.

Hopefully Adam will clear this up.

In buddhist traditions: the swastika that is NOT angled and rotated in the squared position signifies peace. Like this: 卐. The nazi version is obviously rotated and stands for something else.

I don’t know what Adam was thinking or whatever. That’s not for me to determine. He is the one that is wearing it and only he can clarify it.

LOL also at VFTW interpreting the drawing as if it was Adam’s creation. Really, you think Adam drew a bunch of stuff on his costume with markers? The stylist bought the ugly damn thing, and Adam wore it like the good sport he is. On the last concert night, when the Idols could wear whatever they wanted, that vest was conspicuously absent.

Also hilarious that VFTW is claiming that Adam is auctioning it off on ebay. I suppose Adam also somehow got ahold of Danny and Matt’s outfits being autioned by the same seller? Adam ditched that jacket the first second he could, leaving it for the stylist or crew to make a buck if they wanted.

Don’t even get me started on the little drawing itself. To me it always looked like some kind of cartoon alien (like Marvin the Martian) wearing a mushroom hat. When I first heard there were supposedly offensive swastikas on it, I couldn’t find them no matter how much I squinted at the picture. Now with the helpful big red arrows, I can see what people are talking about and I seriously cannot believe that something so tiny and random on an outfit he likely didn’t even choose himself is causing people to say he’s approves of Nazis or some crazy shit like that. I can’t believe that it went for so little. If Adam was aware that the swastika was on the jacket, I would guess that as an artist intellectually aware of his context it was purposely chosen to stir this kind of controversy to re appropriate the symbol’s ancient significance and power from the evil connotations of the last century. Any way you slice it and it is the Nazi symbolism, Adam was a major dumbass to wear the jacket. Yes in our society it means Nazi and maybe 2% of the population knows about the meaning of it in other cultures, I find it so sad that the adam fans are twisting this into so many lame excuses to make Adam innocent,. Okay kids, let’s put this all in perspective.

If Barack Obama had worn this jacket, the media will be all over this in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, it’s “just” Adam Lambert.

There is nothing in this post where I suggested that Adam was a self-hating Gay Jew. Adam wore this jacket during the tour, and now we find out that it had swastika symbols on it. That’s all I wrote.

To help some of you think, here are a few scenarios:

1. Adam knew the symbols were there, and didn’t care that the swastika is anti-Semetic
2. Adam knew the symbols were there, and knew the swastika was anti-Semetic, but he interprets it as it’s Hindu meaning
3. Adam had no idea the symbols were there because he so busy with a lot of things
4. Adam knew the symbols were there but doesn’t know what it is
5. Etc. etc. etc.

The point? I don’t know. All I know is he wore the jacket and it has these symbols on it which I believe symbolize the Nazi movement.

I’m not posting opinions anymore because you guys have been very mean to me, and even in my non-opinion you are still mean to me.

This is for “VERA” and “GOTCHA.” I showed the picture of Adam’s jacket to my daughter who has been in the music business for years and asked her what she thought, and her first reaction was, “it’s a symbol used in Hinduism to evoke good fortune.”

I have a love/hate thing with Adam. Sometimes I think his voice is amazing other times I think he’s awful.

But this notion that he’s a Nazi sympathizer is so ludicrous that I have to question the sanity of anyone who would believe it. He’s Jewish. He sang at a memorial for Yitzhak Rabin – in Hebrew – and he’s sung at a Jewish telethon. Did he not get booked for enough Bar Mitzvahs and turn anti-Semitic as a result?

This vest was seen and photographed every night of the tour and no one noticed these markings. Even after I heard they were on there I had to stare at the design for awhile before I could make out what people were talking about. I doubt he stared at it for that long.

First of all, there is no proof or verification that the jacket is authentic. (So no, Rickey, you don’t know that he wore it). There was a lot of speculation about the legitimacy of the Idol items this seller was offering before the swastika stuff even surfaced.

Second of all, it just doesn’t make any sense that Adam would wear something with the intention of symbolizing the Nazi party. He’s a gay, Jewish, New Age, love mankind liberal who espouses things like “God hates hate” and “Love overcome hate”, and is all about peace, love and positive thinking. Yes, he likes to push buttons, but in a fun, sexy, lighthearted way. Given what we know about Adam, if the jacket IS his, the most logical explanation is that he feels connected to the spiritual symbolism that ancient swastikas represent to so many eastern religions and other spiritual people. (I was given a scarf with swastikas on it when I received a blessing at a temple in India. The scarf has special meaning to me now because it represents my spiritual experience — it CERTAINLY doesn’t make me sympathetic to Nazi’s!!!). Since we know that Adam is drawn to ancient, mystical symbols, and since the swastikas on the jacket are accompanied by other mystical looking symbols, this seems like a more rational explanation than “Adam is a neo-Nazi”, or wants to offend people, or whatever other nonsense people think he’s doing. Not to mention, the intention of the symbols is clearly not to make a public statement – they’re way to small for people to notice and react to, especially when you consider he only wore the jacket on stage. I’m not trying to make excuses for him because I like him. There is no excuse for promoting Nazism in any way. I just don’t think that possibly could be what he was doing, so I’m going with the most rational explanations. It’s flat-out ludicrous that someone like him would feel a connection to the Nazi party and (literally) wear that connection on his sleeve to make a statement.

PS If we were looking at the same scenario with Gokey or Sarver, I’d also go with the most rational explanation — I’d think the whole thing was a hoax.

The jacket was sold by someone in Nashville, TN. The eBay user ID: amazingdesignerfinds. Simply go to eBay, do an advanced search for seller: amazingdesignerfinds, then see completed listings. You will also see that they sold Matt, Danny, and Kris items (clothing) from the tour as well, though it didn’t fetch close to that jacket.

As for the jacket…no one knows that this is the ACTUAL jacket Adam wore. No one knows if those symbols were actually on the jacket when Adam wore it, IF it’s his exact jacket. Nobody knows whether or not Adam knew about the symbols on the jacket IF this particular jacket was his and had the symbols on it at the time he wore it. Finally, if this is his jacket and it did have the symbols on it, nobody knows what those symbols meant to Adam, if he even payed attention to them (which he must’ve, because he seems to pay attention to detail and loves clothes). It may very well be the Buddhist symbols, the good symbols, whatever.

Why don’t we have Adam himself discuss what it means?

It could also be some statement of some sort.

Yes, we know Adam is a Jew and gay and his fans, friends and family know he’s a very good guy who does believe in good principles. I’m quite sure he’s not a Nazi supporter, ha ha. That totally goes against everything Adam.

I would err on the side of the belief that it’s a spiritual, positive and good version of the symbol knowing Adam who is very much into spiritual symbolism. Look at his tattoo. Look at the necklaces and rings he wears. He’s into star signs and astrology. I’m quite sure it’d be the spiritual symbols, then.

If you want it to really get the facts, track down the designer and find out. Besides it is just a vest, it only is offensive if you want it to be. Michelle, no, everything Adam does must not be defended. However, don’t expect people to be just allowed to get away with showing their ignorance, whoever they are talking about, and there is a lot of ignorance being displayed around the web today.

I for one, as a fan of Adam, agree with Margaret. Adam will be the maker of his own downfall. Unfortunately those who should be promoting him started turning to others even during the tour because they started to see that this wasn’t a commodity they could promote in the way they would like to. A lot of things that were planned for the end of this year/beginning of next have been shelved. In many ways, they must now be very pleased that he didn’t win. That said, this is a totally different issue.

Isn’t the symbol on his jacket with the dot in the concentric circles a Jain symbol? Isn’t the swastika also a Jain symbol?

Sure I will give people that they symbols are swastika’s and that it was stupid move to wear them. Why didn’t one of the higher up people over the tour or other contestants tell him not to wear it if he didn’t realize how controversial it would be?

BUT I think it is obviously not meant as a Nazi symbol even if it is turned wrong since Adam is Jewish and gay.

Since we can reasonably assume that Adam is NOT a Nazi and that swastika’s have other meanings, these bloggers should probably have gotten a statement from Adam before running with this story or they should have at least qualified that Adam is Jewish and there are other versions of the symbol.

This does seem like a hit piece because VFTW hates Adam and Rickey is an out of control Kris stan (remember him saying that Kris’ album was bad and then acting like he made the whole thing up for hits). So I think it is also reasonable to conclude that they want to hurt Adam’s career.

Adam wore the stupid vest for about 5 minutes every show. Who’s to say that he actually sat down and studied the garment closely during that time? Especially since it’s something that the stylist picked out, not him.

Look, it’s all about CONTEXT. The rest of the drawing seems very eastern-influenced, so it’s more natural to assume that the Swastika is meant in it’s original eastern meaning. Now, if the rest of the drawing had included a picture of Hitler or something, your version would make more sense. As it is, the most obvious conclusion, based on 1) The rest of the drawing, 2) The person who’s wearing the vest, is that it is not meant to be a Nazi symbol.

It’s really quite hilarious that all of you would stick up for him just because he is the beloved Adam Lambert. Wow! Quite a world we live in today. So many to defend a symbol of hatred and death by saying it represents peace and tranquility. Ask a Holocaust survivor what what that symbol means to them. Adam Lambert is Jewish and was on American Idol, true, but neither one of these facts excuses the ridiculousness of this. Stick up for him, it is your prerogative. Just take a second to think about what you are really sticking up for, and if you still feel the same… then you people really are sorry excuses for human beings. If the President wore that on an article of clothing, he would be crucified. Adam Lambert should be no different just because he is some sort of icon in your pathetic lives.

So, maybe we should ask Derek Riggs if he designed Adam’s jacket???? Maybe he can explain what all the symbols mean. Seriously, though, do you think all those other Idols would have just not said a word about something that blatent?

I don’t know why the people who tweeted to Adam asking about the jacket think that he would possibly answer them, even as a joke. He sent 2 tweets back to back, that one being the second one. In the first one, he was giving Blake Lewis a shoutout for his new album, and then he tweeted about Tokio Hotel’s right after. Adam rarely tweets, and as far as I know, he only answers questions during Twitter parties.
