This is a portion of my interview with Sanjaya Malakar last night after his birthday concert at B.B. Kings in Times Square. I broke the news to him that Ellen DeGeneres was replacing Paula Abdul, and his reaction was amazing.

That’s so cool that you got to break the news to him! What an amazing reaction hahahaha.

Here’s my take on Ellen being a judge: If you’ve ever seen her talk about idol on her show, you know that she watches it very carefully and is very articulate about her opinions on why she likes certain people. I agree that she was pretty useless judging SYTYCD, but I feel like she was just having fun, since it was a one time thing, and that she’ll take the idol job more seriously. And no matter what, she is just a joy to watch.

I think she is capable of being a good judge, she has the vocab for it, she knows her sh*t. It is just a matter of her not being too nice to people when they fail. I think that will be her downfall if she has one.

Having a professional background in music does not make you a good judge. Look at Randy Jackson.

Ha, great interview, Rickey!! You can always count on Sanjaya for a genuine response. Of course he loves Ellen. She will be a fabulous judge. I might actually watch this season. Okay, so I didn’t expect this to be the first item on his BB King show. More to come??
