Heroes “1961″ Recap

This was an interesting episode. Unfortunately, the ending made me non-caps-locked WTF.

SPOILERS

Angela Petrelli has a sister named Alice — who can control the weather. She’s like the X-Men’s Storm — her powers are influenced by her emotions. So when she’s distressed, expect a hurricane and lots of lighting.

At any rate, we get flashbacks to 1961 when a young Angela, Linderman, etc. are in the Coyote Sands being studied by Dr. Suresh. Angela and the others decide to leave the camp in order to warn the authorities about it leaving Alice behind. When Alice gets studied by Dr. Suresh, she freaks out. Dr Suresh slaps her to get her back to her senses. Her father pushes Dr. Suresh with his wave power whatever, and then gets shot by a soldier. I am assuming that after this, everyone gets massacred because they did not show us.

Angela then forms the corporation with the guys.

In the present — a lot of bonding and talking from Peter, HRG, Mohinder, Nathan, Claire and Angela. I actually liked this. The characters get to settle down to the basics of who they are — no matter how trite. What a relief that it’s not about powers but the characters again.

Then we make a discovery: Alice is alive. She brings Angela to a bunker where she has been living for 50 years. Apparently she’s a nutcase — that’s the only explanation I can think of. At first things were OK when they talk. But then Angela says she’s sorry for lying to her — and she freaks out and uses her weather powers again. Peter and Mohinder arrive — they get lightning bolted. Angela says sorry again — “You have a family — they’re the only ones who can make things better” she says. “Say goodbye Alice.” Then Alice says “No” and flees. She’s gone. Insert non-caps-locked WTF here.

That kinda didn’t make sense. I guess Alice is just a crazy woman, and we’ll leave it at that. Could be a villain down the road.

Meanwhile, Mohinder stays behind for more soul-searching. The others meet in a diner patching things up. But then Nathan sees himself on the TV making some sort of announcement. “Who the hell is that?” HRG responds: “Sylar.”

Yay!

Two more episodes left.

Will we ever get the Season One Heroes again? With what I’ve seen these past 2 episodes, I am hopeful.

yeah I have to agree that episode kinda ended with a huge WTF across the screen. Even though the episode itself was pretty well made IMO, sadly it doesn’t contribute at all to the general plot development. It left us wondering why we have to know about this crazy sister that survived whatever happened on that crazy night. Hmmm…

actually.i loved this episode.im asuming that they made this episode only for angela because shes turning out to be the viewers favorite.i like her character.we dont really noe anything about angelas past.and this was a great way to show it.from season 1 and 2.she kinda looked like a villain,but now.shes deffinitly a hero.nxt ep seems to be more interesting.everything else is coming back to normal now.im liking it.just pls…less matt parker..dont like him.his ewwwww..his ugly.

Did you all catch the tie in to early Season 1 episodes?

I won’t say too much here. Angela Petrelli’s shoplifting — the stealing of socks — was explained.

Is Alice crazy? Probably. She’s lived alone in the desert for almost 50 years. It was clear from when we first saw her that she was not in the best mental state.

Also… It was good to see they didn’t forget what was happening in 1961 vis a vis racial segregation.

@stormedtiger: Deveaux’s power is more akin to Matt’s telepathy. If you watch it back, just before he asks Angela to dance, it is implied that he read Angela’s mind.

This episode wasn’t bad… I liked the flashback scenes a lot, but the rest of it just felt like a big waste of time.
Specially with the sister. I was just waiting for SOMETHING to happen with that… like some light bulb was going to come on and things were going to be revealed w/ her, but no… nothing.
WTF was the point of them finding the sister? It just all seemed so pointless.

I like this episode – not only did it have reference to early Season 1 (with the stealing of socks) but also with the end of Season 1, wherein shapeshifting Sylar pretended to be Nathan and had a battle with Peter when he had multiple abilities. I really hope Peter gets to do that again. It sucks that he’s been able to hold on to just one ability now.

My only question is why did Angela and her comrades wait 50 years to go back there? It seems like they would have gone back shortly after the massacre to search for signs that some of their family members might have survived. It also seems like her dreams would have told her that her sister was still alive.

I strongly feel they are trying to erase S2/3 out of our minds, now that the future arch in S1 is starting to come to pass, with sylar taking nathens spot, and Peter not having his healing ability hence the future scar, I dont even want to think of S2 or 3.

SPOILER ALERT!

@Angela: I was avoiding mention of the Sylar as Nathan bit since it is a spoiler. Yes, they’re trying to tie this into the future we saw with Sylar as President of the US. There may be hope for the show.

Looks like we now have Family Petrelli — with HRG as their chief grunt — against the US govt (infected with Sylar).
