The judges however really hated this. Is Matt in trouble? I don’t know.

This was *exactly* like the week he butchered Coldplay so badly. He doesn’t know what he’s good at. It shows why most of the contestants shouldn’t be allowed to pick their own songs!

I knew the judges would hate that. It wasn’t as good as last week, but I liked it. Still, Matt needs to be smarter with his song choices.

Matt isn’t so good this week. His vocals were really shaky and the ending was so wobbly, it was painful to listen.

Don’t know who’s worse tonight, him or Megan Joy?

Matt still does not register with me – I forget who he is, how he sounds, everything. He tried too hard on this song and it was pitchy and boring. I think he has more potential than he has shown so far.

His low register is not good. I think that’s what destroyed his performance. And the slight voice cracks. I thought this was gonna be the best week for the contestants. How sad.

Matt’s song choices leave somethinge to be desired. His attempts to not be pigeon-holed in the R&B niche is leaving him exposed as other competitors have found their stride.

Those who are capable of selecting from 1 genre & style to another successfully each week (like Adam) are exceptions. Some artists stick with what they do best; Danny. I am not a Danny-fan, but, his method of success & the over-pimping by the NOTORIOUS 4 is working for him.

Hmmm, actually, I thought this was a good song choice for Matt. He just needs to tame the wild vibrato… or generally control his voice a bit better, or something. But he’s one of the more talented ones up there.

i actually thought he wasn’t that good last week after watching it over a few times , he deserved to be in the bottom 2 last week , after this week i actually really liked it, but than again some ppl will follow what the judges say and hang on there every word.

I will just cry if he goes home tomorrow night. Where is the Matt from the original audition? The one who gave me goosebumps and made me think of an early Elvis – raw talent with a honey voice? Tonight’s performance was terrible and weird. Once I saw Kris Allen’s performance – the sort of performance that I have been waiting for from Matt – I realized that his chances may be even less than I am hoping for, and dialing for every week. I will be crushed if he is the American Idol contestant that got away, because, honestly, he has yet to give a performance that will get him into a recording studio. Matt, please, just give us that voice – and put the piano away for now.

He was decent, but boring and forgettable as usual and not attractive to enough voters. His only hope is if he survives tomorrow and they keep putting him to sing last or next to last.

so the judges basically want everyone to be a certain type. why don’t they just do a week where the judges pick the songs for them already. also, i don’t think of idol in terms what album they’re going to make. what matters is our obsessions with all of them Right Now, since there aren’t going to be albums from most of them.

i thought he was totally charming in the wrap up.

I heart Matt. I think he wants this so bad.
But his confidence level must be in low now, because after an awesome performance last week he was unfairly in the bottom two.
Can you imagine the emotional roller coaster for him right now? First he is called a front runner and now the judges just throw him under the bus.

I hope he survives this week and comes out banging.
He is one of the most talented guys in this competition. No one has top his “So Small” performance for me, not even Adam.

What a tough ride he has been through.

Again I disagree w/ the judges tonite. I thought it was strong and definitely nowhere near as bad as ‘Viva la Vida’. But I will admit he should’ve picked ‘Apologize’. Hope he survives. Grade=B

I don’t care what the judges or the haters think. I liked Matt’s performance tonight. Showed he’s versatile. This is the real Matt, rock and soul, which is what he wants to be! It’s all very similar to what Michael Johns went through last year – the judges pushing him to do soul and blues when clearly he wanted to do rock songs, and anything he did that was veering away from what they wanted they HATED on. Aaarrggh. SAVE MATT, Rickey!

matt is my favorite idol this season (allison and adam come a close second/third) but aw man this was NOT a good performance and i’m terrified of elimination tomorrow. he doesn’t deserve to go home yet.

I loved Matt’s performances earli in Hollywood- he was grat but it I have not seen that since and that’s too bad because I think he really can sing . He makes weird choices – I gree with the poster who says maybe the judges should choose the songs for the contestants because Matt has zero ability in picking the right song for himself .

That being said , his ” Georgia on my Mind” was one of my very favorites and I want to see more of that Matt but I think he is toast after tonight .

The goregous Megan NEEDS to go – she has been terrible week after week but her beauty and Vote for the Worst will get her by – I hate her attitude too about how her fans will come to her rescue . She can’t even see that she SUCKS !

Matt’s too talented to be so aweful. He’ll be in the bottom 3 again (he doesn’t have the broad appeal of Anoop or Megan). I don’t know if the judges will use a save on Matt for that song, but they would for his overall showing.

I feel sorry for matt. I’m not really a fan because Matt steals votes from Kris, my favorite, but you just can’t help but feel the guy’s frustration at being torn between pleasing the judges and himself. But I also totally get the judges too because even though he doesn’t like it, his voice, his upper register, most especially is more suited for R&B and pop songs than alternative rock. For the purposes of going far in the competition, I think he should stick with what he does best rather than indulging. He can pick the songs he likes later when he gets more famous that by then, it wont matter what song he picks.

he’s such a better singer than this song. and he copied the vocal stylings of the original almost to the T. it’s like he grew the scruff just to try to be convincing. and it wasn’t. i don’t like that song to begin with, but he didn’t even sing it completely well. it just didn’t sound right.

i watched the performance again…it really wasn’t as bad as some people made it out to be. you can tell, he stil can sing. regardless i still love the sound of his voice : )GO MATTY G!!!! XOXO!!

This was a great vocal and performance. The Original is almost painfully boring, as is everything that the fray does. It’s like watching grass grow. Matt did it 100X better because he can actually sing!

The lead singer of the fray has a very whiney voice.

It wasn’t bad at all, Clearly he was MUCH better than Scott. And they praised Scott for massacring a Billy Joel song? Are the judges drunk or something.

The only thing I hated about this was that why on earth does he have to perform at the center of the audience? I bet if he performed on the stage like always, it could have helped him in this performance.

It wasn’t his best performance but i didn’t think it was as bad as the judges thought but they didn’t like it because it wasn’t orginal.
