Wow, I actually didn’t hate a Gokey performance for a change and I agree with Simon, that was Danny’s best performance. It didn’t seem overdone like most of his other work — I prefer the restrained vocals.

Okay.

When Allison finished her song, I thought that her performance quality was EQUAL to Danny’s. Good but not great. Proper song choices for each, nonetheless.

Well, waddaya know? The judges, of course.

Allison gets knocked. Gently, but knocked.

Danny is praised although he forces the song in areas.

Somehow, I wasn’t surprised.

Danny is my favorite this season and will be till the very end… but you could definitely tell that his voice was a bit stressed, maybe from the emotion he was feeling singing the song…I’m not sure. But I still think he did a pretty decent job. Doesn’t matter – cuz I just love this guy!

I agree Val, except I think that’s giving this guy way too much credit. For one, he’s nowhere near Archie’s level, and I was never even rooting for Archie to take the crown (haha, that makes me a Word Nerd).

Every performance he gives seems dated almost before it’s even finished. Seriously, I like to listen to inspirational music too sometimes, but who goes in for it when it’s this unsubtle? Really, you find it inspiring that he’s singing a song for his wife? For the 4th damned week in a row? Sorry, but not only is the emperor naked- this time he also happens to be a fat, pedestrian douchebag.

Danny is amazing! I really hope he wins.. His performance tonight gave me the chills! Everything he has been though with his wife passing away shortly before the show and now his grandfather. He is making them proud,They give him inspiration to give it his all.I can’t wait till next week to see what he will be singing! He continues to give it his all week after week.

His Hero was better, way better. But then last week he probably got beaten in votes by two other contestants, so they had to pump him up. He was so straining at the end is isn’t funny.

Looks like we may be heading to another sub 2M Idol winner with Danny. Nothing short of the Rapture can prevent his win after the such judge fawning over a barely average performance.

Superb upper register, very soulful, good instincts, masculine and a little raspy on the lower register, huge when he wants it, but can also take it down, connects emotionally with the audience. You don’t need to be a genius to see he’s very talented. And for those of you with the “I can’t stand him,” “dead wife,” “pimping,” and “double chin” comments, you really need to move out of your parents’ basements and get a life.

I want him to sing acappella. I don’t think any other male contestant has dared to since Bo Bice, and I would like to hear his voice free of any other distraction. He is very talented, but I don’t think tonight was his best performance – something was off with the sound, his voice, or a combination of the two. But he is the one with a voice that reaches really deep, and I would like to hear it all by itself. Am I crazy to think he ought to sing some Nickelback? I don’t even know the lead singer’s name, but everytime I hear that band on the radio, that singer’s voice cuts me to the core. I think Danny ought to have a go at one of those songs – there is something very similar to me in those two voices.

Did you hear the cheers and screams he got..afterwards He so connects with the song and makes it exciting to listen too. And he changes it up to make it his own..Did you see Simon clapping for him WOW!!! Simon rarely ever does that for anyone..
I keep singing the songs he does over and over afterwards you dont ever forget what he just sang that is a great singer with a great impact on his audience. Not since Clay Aiken who could do that too when he sang have we had this powerful of a singer on the show..who grabs our attention the way he does..Love him or hate him he grabs your attention:)

And what can all you haters say who expected him to fail tonight in his song or mention his dead grandfather the truth is you will find something else to bash him about..By the way he is not fat he is built very good!!! Take a look at Rascal Flatts he reminds me alot of him body shape and they both have nice big upper torsos to belt those beautiful notes out with:) Maybe some of you will get tired of bashing him every week as you see more of his personality and begin to actually like him:)

His records will probably sell gold quickly regardless whether or not he wins. I love his vocals, but I don’t want him to win. I don’t want to be insensitive, and I sympathize, but a lot of screen time, along with the unfortunate timing of multiple deaths in his family, is causing his vote count to skyrocket.
The judges overpraising Gokey, though not so much this week, I also find ridiculous. Isn’t the Idol decided by America, and not influenced by judge fluff?

He still rocked by the way, but I’m not feeling the love. STILL VOTING ANYWAYS!

Honestly, those of you who did not like Danny or his performance know damn well he did an amazing job. I think he has you guys shaking in your boots, those of you who think adam and kris are better. HA!! The energy is so amazing and my god i cannot wait to hear his first record, i listen to his songs over and over. This guy’s talent really speaks to your emotions….every week. I do not care about anyone else and i think he deserves all the praise he gets.

Do you think maybe he spent some time crying this week? Do you think maybe that might be hard on the vocal chords well it is! It taxes them. As well as talking too much which would be hard not to do when he has just experienced a death in his family and having to talk to them about arrangements and other things..

Also riding on a plane is very drying to the vocal chords I know I am a singer and vocal teacher!!!

So give him a break I bet the studio version is going to be amazing!! And will get spins!
And I cant wait to see what he does next week WOW! It will blow us away! He just keeps getting better and better:) And hopefully will have some time to rest those vocal chords..

What this performance had was – FINALLY – a connection to SOMETHING. I didn’t think it was that strong a vocal performance, though. What’s funny about Danny is that I thought he was the front running (neck and neck) with Adam. HOWEVER, every week Adam BLOWS Danny WAY OUT of the water. Even Kris, tonight, blew Danny’s vocals out the water, and I’m NOT a Kris fan (YET).

All I am saying is that we have NO CLUE what Danny’s relationship was with this particular grand parent. We just can’t base a performance on – “what personal trials did he go through this week?” – unless you KNOW personally that he was devistated.

what is all of this with “he was pimping his dead wife”??? he didnt even mention her AT ALL or mention his grandfather! Ryan asked him what song he chose and why, and then they started talking about his performance from the week before.. he never even said anything about his wife.

I just dont know why people have sooo much hate for him. it’s ridiculous. he hasn’t mentioned his wife in several weeks, and everyone else keeps mentioning it saying that HE is the one talking it. dont you all get that it’s YOU talking about it, NOT HIM! give the guy a break! plus, nothing was ever mentioned about his grandfather on the show at all – that’s just been around the internet, so dont confuse the two!

With all due respect, jennjenn, the appeal of the show for many people (myself included) is not to simply pick a singer and root them on to the finish as if they were a hockey team. A major part of AI is the fun of watching the show with a critical eye. I always feel like I have a more nuanced appreciation for the art of singing by the end of the season, and that’s because I get to hear unflinching critiques for both sides. I find it fun to talk constructively about the performances, to talk about the underdogs, the underrated ones, and – yes – the overrated as well.

Many people I’ve come across on AI sites (including the great Michael Slezak) find that the most overly (and unfairly, in the case of one would-be diva) praised contestants of the season have been Danny and Lil. And, really, if you think about it, the contestants who get hyped are always going to become one of the major discussion topics of the season, because that hype, by its very nature, monopolizes a lot of the show’s running time. You can’t fairly expect people not to discuss the merits of that ever-present hype, and we shouldn’t required to make the Hobson’s choice of either saying that the hype is fair or silencing our opinions. If American Idol is meant to be the entertainment world’s answer to democracy, then we can’t be afraid of criticism from all sides. Instead of getting angry when our own picks are maligned, we should see it as an invitation to respond intelligently, no?

Oh, and to anyone who thinks that non-Danny supporters are being unfair by not factoring in Danny’s stressful week (and my sentimental, family-centric heart does go out to him), I think it would be unfair for 2 reasons. First, my preferred approach is to simply listen to the performances and regard everything else as irrelevant. Second, knowing Idol’s love of manipulation, I don’t think it would be fair to other contestants whose lives have not been as publicized this week.

I’m rooting for Danny, but as of now he’s just coasting. He can easily keep that up for a while, but in the end Adam or Kris is going to pass him with their raw originality.

However, he’s got quite a few weeks to come up with a big “hit” like his first week’s performance was. If the “big song” is good enough, it can literally carry you through the entire rest of the competition from what I’ve seen.

A good example of this was David Cook’s “Billie Jean” last year.

I think that the finale will be between gokey and matt giraud with adam eliminated in the top 3. A lot of people don’t get that giraud has voice that capable of pulling off heartfelt and enjoyable songs just like gokey while adam has a unique voice but has no chance of pulling that very kind of songs, and lets face it that not many people will enjoy adams performance of any song more than once. The wow factor of adam’s song doesn’t last long

I’ve always hated Danny but not because of the singing. Always about the pimping. It seems kind of unfair to him but then he does get a lot of votes because of the pimping. But I dont think he deserves all the hate that he gets. But then he also doesn’t deserve all the pimping.

He does come off like douchebag sometimes but I think that he really is a good guy with well-meaning but misguided friends trying to help him out. That picture was, I think, the thing that will cost him his crown in American Idol. If I were him, I’d really really hate that friend now.

The fact that EVERYBODY knows about his grandpa even though he didn’t mention it on the show is already a kind of pimping. I really think that the show leaked that tidbit to further pimp him.

That said, I really liked his performance compared to the others. I think people are too used to him singing upbeat songs (which highlights his douchebag-like qualities) and thus seeing him kind of stripped down is a little weird. I personally like his voice even though I dont think its really the proper way to sing since it seems like he’s forcing it sometimes. But he hits his notes EVERY time. So I think that’s just how his voice sounds. And its really really nice. I loved how heartfelt it was which kind of reminds me of Archuleta although Archie really had a pure and, dare I say it, angelic quality to his voice that really reached inside you. Archie didn’t really do much to the songs, but his voice and empathy with the song really touched the heart (corny! hehe)

Wow. so much hate for Danny. With all the haters like you existing, I wonder why he is leading in dialidol? I know it’s NOT 100% accurate (last year it’s only 97% correct), BUT still it is an indicator how many Danny Gokey fans are out there. He is consistently on top of dialidol (except last week where he ranked #3). So i think all of the haters’ comments are actually helping Danny’s popularity. So to all HATERS – great job! Just continue hating him, and for sure ALL of Danny’s supporters will do all their best for him to win the crown.

One more thing, it’s not DANNY’s fault he is overpimped. Are you expecting him to say upfront to the judges that “Hey, don’t pimp me!”. So it’s not HIS fault, it’s the JUDGES and PRODUCERS fault. So I find it REALLY STUPID (stress on the word STUPID) to hate Danny because he is overpimped.

Danny was better than his predecessors last night. Everone who came after him (except Megan who was unpalatable) was either on par or far better than him. Where he fell in the lineup made it easy for the judges to do what they usually do – pimp Danny. He and ‘Lil get more love from the judges than anyone else.

To me, it seems that Danny shouts every time he gets up to sing. I do like his voice for a while, but then, it gets shoutey and I’m pretty much done listening to him. Yet, the judges seem to never call him on it.

I don’t get the fascination with him. I don’t hear anything different/unique about him. Past contestant Michael John had a better sound.

I was a pretty big Danny fan in the beginning. He was one of my favorites through the first 3 weeks. I was pretty disappointed in him Tuesday. When he was saying that he had 4 other songs that he wanted to sing over Get Ready, it was like he was making excuses for his poor performance. I’ve heard of several other performers who haven’t gotten the songs they wanted and they haven’t mentioned it. I find it a little hard to believe that it was his fifth choice. I would have more respect for him if he just to responsiblity for a bad performance. He’s lost a fan.

deb haeson – you’re exactly right. There are always going to be people that hate someone and others that like them. I love Danny! He’s been my favorite since his audition. And yeah, they pimped his story a lot, but that wasn’t his fault… and yeah, I was hoping that after he got in the Top 13 that he’d quit talking about it, for HIS sake, because I knew that would really start getting to people, and he DID stop talking about it, which is great.

I dont think Danny was making excuses for his performance last week. He even said that even though it was his 5th song choice that he still had fun and he thought he did well… I dont hear an excuse there. Plus, he has a TON of respect for Simon.. he’s said it many times in interviews, so if he jokes with Simon occasionally, i dont think there’s anything wrong with that.

I also dont mind if people voice their opinions, but when it comes down to people saying he’s a douche-bag and he’s a fatty and stuff, that’s just ridiculous. If you didnt like his peformance, then say so, but what does singing have to do with how someone looks? Adam, TO ME, is not attractive at all or appealing, yet he has a great voice (I’ll admit) I just dont prefer him, I prefer Danny. And Danny isn’t fat, he’s stocky. So, there ya go.

Danny you keep rocking… no matter what anyone says you are the best… and for all of those haters out there: If attacking his losses in life lessens his ability to sing, think again, it will just make him get stronger and stronger every day. Adam is great,but at least Danny does not have to scream, paint his nails, or look like a punk-staged wannabe trying to put a terrible spin on every song that he sings. Danny has greater longevity.

hey Deb – Archie sang Stand By Me last year, so I’m a little worried if Danny sang that song, even though it could be a good one for his voice – but might be too recent… the judges could possibly comment. There’s some great 80’s music so I’m hoping he finds a great song – but whatever he chooses, I think he will kill it. I just love the tone of his voice. SOooo great!:)

Well, I thought he did just okay too. He didnt do great. I agree, I think he has alittle too much of the emotion going on there that he was hard for him to focus on the song. Maybe to the judges the emotion thing was the best part because in this competition, seldom any of the the contestants connects with the song. However, am still a fan of Danny. LOL, and he is cocky.

its funny u say hes cocky and a douche, hes on youtube talking with fans and hugging people in the mall, no body guard juss his only friend from idol who got booted off, look dan is no douche or cocky, he would greet u as if hes known you for years, ive known him almost all my life, hes a great guy and a great husband to my cousin, but now every contestant will tell u the real cocky douche is the beloved anoop n seriously who back talks the judges, n adam, anyone with ears that actually pick up sound will tell u adam did horrible with play that funky music, of we are talking about originality then honestly all adam does his turn his songs into 80s ballads or rock, really do u think adam can actually out vocalize gokey, kris, or matt, which by the way will be top 3 yes mstt, daniel j gokey, and kris will top off this year, adam will probably sell a record or 2 but wont even go gold, u can only listen to a guy scream a few times before hes annoying, and the friend who was holding the picture of his wife during hero was his brother in law not a friend but family and its not pimping his dead wife when u remind everyone why hes even on this show,he never said goodbye to the wife he walked into thst hospital, none of my family got last words, hes doing this for her and god, hes winning souls to christ whether u like it or not he is a true idol, someone ur kids can aspire to be or look up too, sumone who wont live in drugs and alcohol but show ur children something true to believe in

brandon irizarry – I’m sooo glad you are on here defending Danny as someone who actually knows him! It’s great to have you around!

And I completely agree – I believe he’s here for a good reason and he wants to be a good role model. And I just don’t take Danny as being cocky. He’s very confident, and I think some people confuse that with being conceited. I understand his personality and I’m not offended by it at all. But I take it as he pokes on people in a loving way because they are friends, and not in a mean spirited way like other people see it. None of us live in the house, so we don’t know what they all find to be funny and what they don’t.

Now, I don’t know Danny personally, but he just seems like a cool guy to be around, he’s got a great voice,and I think he deserves to win this thing. Whether he does or not, I don’t think matters, because he’s going to have a long career either way. Plus – everyone I talk to loves him!

Gokey will be a fine singer once he learns to sing in key and not scream every single note.

He keeps letting his true nature through though– the smug attitude, the nasty “impersonation”, the fact that he twists every situation to be about himself, the profiting from his wife’s death (did someone FORCE him to audition a month after she died?), the pandering to jesus freaks (who are easily manipulated, otherwise they wouldn’t believe all of the hoohaw they do–and of course, Gokey already makes his living off of a scam church anyway)…well, the list goes on.

If only he really could sing, it’d be different. But he can’t. He knows that Idol isn’t about singing anyway.

Oh yeah, he’s a ‘christian’ trying to be an ‘idol’? Put ‘hypocrite’ on his list of character flaws too.

PLUS – Kris Allen is a Christian… so is Michael Sarver… so is Matt Giraud… I believe Scott MacIntyre is as well… Lil Rounds said she grew up in Church… And I believe Jasmine was as well.

So how is it that Gokey is the BAD one and the rest aren’t? If you don’t like someone, fine, but don’t call him a hypocrite and not mention any of the rest of the finalists… They are all in for the “IDOL” title too…

This is my favorite performance among all the Idols this season. Every song Danny sings he gives 110% of his soul into it. He makes every song his own. I could listen to him 24 – 7. An American Idol is the entire package – voice, personality, emotional connection. That is why Danny Gokey will win this season. Danny FTMFW !!!!

Danny will definitely NOT win this season.

Well, he would have been a winner if he only joined AI some years ago (like what could have been for Vonzell Solomon if only she had joined AI Season 3)… Season 5 would have been great for him because that’s when his growling idol Taylor Hicks won! And since, like what many other people have noticed, he’s just a better version of Hicks, he would have probably outshone him then. That would be an epic battle of the rawrrrrs!!!!

Look I’m tired of people badmouthing Gokey. His voice is incredible, and he’s a great performer. His wife did die and he is singing to her…. What exactly do you think you’d do if you were in his situation? THE SAME THING!!! People need to stop giving him grief about his wife, and unless you can sing better don’t badmouth, critiquing is fine, but don’t put someone else down for doing something unless you can do it better.

This performance is amazing. I just got news about an hour ago that a family member just passed away today, and I’m sitting here in tears right now, trying to make sense of this (it was very sudden). Danny’s voice and passion is inspiring.
