I watched the David Archuleta concert at the Starland Ballroom in New Jersey last Thursday.

I went with Karissa, Noelle and Josh. Because we are dedicated David Archuleta fans, we left New York at 9:30 in the morning for an 8 PM concert. Noelle’s mom drove us to NJ. We got lost. We did a couple of U-turns, passed a recycling plant and a junkyard, before we finally reached our destination… in the woods. Starland Ballroom looked like an abandoned building.

At 11 AM, there were a handful of fans waiting on the other side of the road. A parking nazi refused to let us anywhere near the parking lot — which at this time was being used by a forklift lifting vans unto a couple of flatbed trucks. We waited until another guy gave us the go signal to line up at 2 PM. By this time, fans with “star parking” tickets already jumped the line — because apparently they were allowed to. It turns out that the “haves” (them) were in line on a separate entrance, while the “have nots” (us) were relegated to another line. Their line was going to go in first — all 100 of them.

We were first on the have-nots line, but sensing the injustice I informed my “imaginary friend” for help. A couple of minutes before the venue opened, he came out and let us in along with 4 other NYC Angels. The doors opened, and we ran to front row. FJ! The suffering through fans bragging about their meet and greet passes and star parking tickets was now all behind us because we were friggin’ front row b*ches.

I had a great time at the concert. Karissa and I chatted with the girls around us. We were all happy to be there. Lesley Roy and her band performed and we had a blast. Our ears also got blasted. The drums and the screams were so loud.

During the set change, our experience went up a notch when they started to setup David’s keyboard right in front of us! As in we right in the middle. How lucky!

Before David Archuleta’s set however, a middle-aged woman started talking to me behind my back, telling Josh and I to relinquish our spot for this girl behind us. We had already talked to this girl earlier, and offered that she could sneak in every once in a while between us so she could see David, so we were a bit peeved at this request from out of the blue. And then she started saying: “David Archuleta would be a gentleman and do it… (to the people around her) and MY SON would do it.”

At this point I wouldn’t let this selfish idiot ruin my evening so I let her have it:

Rickey: “Who are you?”
Middle-aged Fan: “I’m her mother.”
Rickey: “Well, did you know that your daughter sneaked into the meet and greet earlier without a proper pass? (She told me this earlier).”
Middle-aged Fan: “I was with her.”
Rickey: “David Archuleta will not look kindly on cheaters like you.”

During the concert the lady tried to take pictures over my head so Karissa and I swung our arms around to the beat. What a b*tch.

I cooled down after a while, and the girl actually felt guilty that they had pissed me off. I tried to make her feel better — but that woman did not get any sympathy from me. In fact, towards the end of the concert this middle-aged lady, pushed her way into the front row — and the little girl she was trying to help could not see anything! When the concert was over, she lingered at the barricade and asked for some souvenirs from the crew like the water bottle that David used and what not. So creepy.

We all regrouped after telling stories of our experiences. I wondered if I could finally get a picture with David after the show, but it turned out that hundreds were waiting at the tour bus, so it would have been impossible. Next time. Good things happen to those who wait.

I will have to admit that though I have championed older fans from coming out and supporting their idols from American Idol, the kind of behaviour I experienced last night was just unacceptable. I was at the concert that night to enjoy myself in the company of my friends who were beside me. This middle-aged woman wanted to deprive me of that experience just because I was a guy. Not cool. The younger fans behaved so much better.

Here’s a video of “Zero Gravity”. The sound get bad when the bass starts — because we were so close.

Thank you Karissa, Noelle, Josh, Noelle’s mom, the NYC Angels (thanks for the sandwich!) and the fans we made friends with in the line. Thank you “imaginary friend” — removing “Your Eyes Don’t Lie” from the setlist is forgiven, LOL. And to those middle-aged and any-aged obnoxio fans of David Archuleta: You guys suck. David Archuleta does not deserve to be in the presence of your rotten souls.
