Welcome to the live blog and recap for the 87th Academy Awards! Neil Patrick Harris is hosting the ceremony, which will include performances by Adam Levine, Tim McGraw, John Legend and Common, Lady Gaga, Jack Black, Anna Kendrick, Rita Ora, and many more! And, of course, the Oscar winners will be revealed!

Is Birdman unstoppable, or can Boyhood come out on top? Could a third movie pull off the upset? Will it be Cooper, Keaton or Redmayne? Inarritu, Linklater or Anderson?

Who will win at the Oscars 2015?

PRE-CAP

-So the red carpet interviewers acknowledge the #AskHerMore hashtag about asking the stars about more than just their dresses. So what do they do? Instead of asking them about something else, they ask them about the hashtag, indirectly getting them to talk about their dresses while patting themselves on the back for being a part of a social trend. My eyes are rolling so hard, you’d think they starred in Trainspotting. Speaking of the red carpet, here are some of my favorites from the red carpet via ABC/AMPAS:

If only we could all look that good for Oscar night. For what it’s worth, I have a tie. So…there’s that, I guess.

Ooo, the show is starting! Let’s get this show on the road!

RECAP

-Because Craig Zadan and Neil Meron are producing the show, we immediately kick things off with a musical number, since they produced Chicago so everyone has to like musicals too. Luckily for them, I live and die for a good musical, and Neil Patrick Harris is exactly the type of guy you want doing your big number. It’s essentially a recap of popular film history, and it’s an insanely fun bit, from the teasing of tension between Matt Damon and Ben Affleck in the Good Will Hunting clip, to the inclusion of Anna Kendrick reprising her role as Cinderella from Into the Woods. She has an absolutely wonderful live voice. I also loved the inclusion of Jack Black as the buzzkill, complaining (in song, mind you) that they’re singing too much about films. This was a total blast, and Neil Patrick Harris is a consummate renaissance man. What an incredible vocal, considering all he was doing (Anna Kendrick was singing live, so I assume he was too).

-The monologue isn’t nearly as great, but it’s still funny. Although his joke about Oprah being rich fell flat, he offered a really sincere send-up of why movies are important, and why everyone who works on them is just as important.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

-Lupita Nyong’o is crazy stylish. That’s all I got. The nominees are…

And the Oscar goes to…J.K. SIMMONS!

-J.K. gets a standing ovation from part of the audience, including a dapper-looking Miles Teller. He thanks the Academy and everyone involved in the making of Whiplash. He also thanks his wife, Michelle Schumacher, whom he describes as “The most remarkable person I know.” He then thanks his “above-average children” Joe and Olivia, noting that they’re kind and intelligent, warm and loving all because they are reflections of her. “If you’re lucky enough to have a parent or two alive on this planet, call them! Don’t email or text, call them, tell them you love them,” he says, to increasingly raucous applause. An absolutely beautiful speech, and I couldn’t be happier. He was absolutely outstanding in Whiplash.

-NPH makes a joke by singing “He won an Oscar, bum buh-dum-bum bum-bum-bum,” to the tune of the Farmers Insurance ads in which J.K. Simmons stars. He then does a mystery bit, in which he chooses Octavia Spencer out of the audience to keep watch of a briefcase containing his Oscar predictions. It’s a cute bit, and I’m hoping it pays off later in the show.

-Liam Neeson comes out to introduce The Grand Budapest Hotel and American Sniper, and while it’s very eloquent, he sounds like he’s half-asleep out there. He may have a very particular set of skills, but reading from a teleprompter doesn’t appear to be one of them. Speaking of lethargic readings, Dakota Johnson is out to introduce Adam Levine and Maroon 5…

ADAM LEVINE AND MAROON 5 PERFORM BEST ORIGINAL SONG NOMINEE “LOST STARS”

-If I had a vote in Best Original Song, this would be mine. And not just for the sentimental reason that it’s written by former New Radicals frontman Gregg Alexander. This is an absolutely terrific song from a really underrated movie. The acoustics in the building aren’t all that great, or maybe they just aren’t mic’d properly, but either way, Adam sounded great here, I thought. The song isn’t going to win, btu that was a damn good perfor—OH MY GOD, THEY JUST SHOWED KEIRA KNIGHTLEY. Seriously, how is any one person this pretty?! It’s blinding!

BEST COSTUME DESIGN

-Jennifer Lopez and Chris Pine are here to present, looking splendid. Although J-Lo continues to wear those V-bust gowns like it’s the 2000 Grammys or something. Not that she can’t still pull it off, but damn, girl, mix it up. The nominees are…

The crowd loves her, although she’s seated so far in the back that it takes a lifetime for her to get onstage. She thanks Wes Anderson and her fellow nominees, and it’s a lovely little speech. Very succinct, just the way the Academy likes’em.

BEST MAKEUP AND HAIRSTYLING

-Reese Witherspoon, in her simple, elegant white gown, is my personal Best Dressed of the Evening so far. The nominees are…

And the Oscar goes to…FRANCES HANNON AND MARK COULIER, THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL!

The duo thanks their colleagues and The Academy, while also shouting out a late contemporary of theirs who helped paved the way for them. I’m amazed the Academy let both of them talk, considering how quick they are to hit the “wrap it up!” button.

-Channing Tatum then comes out to introduce the young filmmakers chosen as Team Oscar for this year. He leads the crowd in a round of applause and…that’s it? Ah well, I’m sure it was still a thrill for them.

BEST FOREIGN-LANGUAGE FILM

-Chiwetel Ejiofor and Nicole Kidman present, and awww…the orchestra is playing her out to “Come What May” from Moulin Rouge. That’s downright ADORABLE!

Pawe? Pawlikowski pulls a Roberto Benigni and gives a charmingly befuddling speech in broken English in which he expresses his surprise at being here in the epicenter of noise. He thanks the people who backed the film, and everyone in the trenches with him, saying their strength and resilience is what he loves most about Poland. The orchestra cues up to cut him off, and he just keeps going, even while recogniing that he has to wrap it up. I’m seriously thinking they’re just going to go to commercial while he’s talking about his kids, but he keeps thanking and thanking, getting louder to drown out the orchestra. I kind of wish they’d just let people talk like in the days of old. Sure, you end up with Julia Roberts giving a four-minute acceptance speech, but honestly, when you play people off, you run the risk of playing off a genuine Oscar moment. Of course, the irony here is that this becomes an Oscar moment precisely because they’re playing him off. I guess that’s just how it goes these days with Oscar.

-Shirley MacLaine is out to introduce a look at the next three Best Picture nominees, Boyhood, The Theory of Everything and Birdman. We follow this up with an amusing segment in which NPH interviews the various seat-fillers at the ceremony. This concludes with seatfiller “Steve,” who is actually Steve Carrell. And he’s absolutely STOKED about meeting Edward Norton. I enjoyed it. It felt like it was supposed to be purposely awkward.

TEGAN AND SARA AND THE LONELY ISLAND PERFORM BEST ORIGINAL SONG NOMINEE “EVERYTHING IS AWESOME”

-No idea why they had Marion Cotillard introduce this, but it’s a pretty damn great performance. It starts off with a LEGO chorus singing on the video screen, and it’s followed up by a group of people dressed as LEGO characters coming out onto the stage. LEGO Batman is here! QUESTLOVE IS HERE TOO! My mind is sufficiently blown by how fun this is, even though Tegan and Sara sound vaguely out of tune. I did love the prop work, as the dancers handed out LEGO Oscars to various people in the audience, including Oprah. I think if “Glory” doesn’t win Best Original Song, this has a serious shot at it. Then again, if people are feeling sentimental, Glen Campbell could take it. Ugh, I get the feeling I’m overthinking this category.

BEST LIVE-ACTION SHORT

-Kerry Washington and Jason Bateman win for most random presenter pairing. Not that I’m complaining, mind you. The nominees are…

And the Oscar goes to…THE PHONE CALL!

Mat Kirkby and James Lucas accept the award. “Crikey, these are big buggers! These are heavier!” says Mat. He then thanks his local donut shop, since this award will earn him a free donut. James has to remind him to thank the Academy, and while they’re about to be played off by the orchestra, Mat quickly wraps up by thanking everyone who works at crisis hotline centers, earning respectful applause from the crowd.

BEST DOCUMENTARY SHORT SUBJECT

And the Oscar goes to…CRISIS HOTLINE: VETERANS PRESS 1! (Although Jason Bateman says “Veterans Press Day”)

I have no idea what the hell winner Dana Perry is wearing. It’s like she’s wearing burrs on her dress and they’re painted black. Co-winner Ellen Goosenberg Kent thanks HBO and all their other backers, while Dana reflects on the loss of her son to suicide, noting that we need to do more for veterans. It’s a poignant speech.

GOVERNORS AWARDS

-Viola Davis is out to introduce the video package recapping the honors handed out at the Governors Awards back in November. Maureen O’Hara, Hayao Miyazaki, Jean-Claude Carriere, and Harry Belafonte were the honorary Oscar recipients, with Belafonte earning the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. I kind of wish this had been longer and they’d shown more of each speech. Harry Belafonte’s speech seemed particularly memorable, and I wish we could have heard all of it.

-NPH singles out David Oyelowo in the audience in an attempt to prove that everything sounds better in a British accent. Including his a pretty sick burn on the Annie remake (“This year, we saw the last Hobbit movie, the last Night at the Museum movie, and the last attempt at an Annie remake”), and a pretty awesome “shame on you!” burn on the Academy for snubbing Oyelowo. I feel bad though, because it feels like none of these jokes are landing. NPH is doing a hell of a job, but this crowd isn’t really having it.

TIM MCGRAW PERFORMS BEST ORIGINAL SONG NOMINEE “I’M NOT GONNA MISS YOU”

-The song opens with an absolutely stunning, haunting a cappella opening. McGraw sounds awesome in that part, but when the band kicks in, his voice somewhat fades to the background. It makes me question again if the sound guys mic’d this building properly. Still, this is a perfectly fine performance from McGraw, and one of the most emotional moments of the night so far, considering it’s about a guy losing his sense of self to Alzheimer’s. I can’t hear the lyrics “I’m still here, but yet I’m gone/I don’t play guitar or sing my songs/They never defined who I am/The man that loves you ’til the end” without getting goosebumps. There are other songs I like better in this category, but I wouldn’t be the least bit upset if this song won.

-Back from break, as NPH does an awesome send-up of Birdman, as his robe gets caught in the door during a costume change and is forced to go out onstage in his underwear, just like in the movie. However, not before coming across Miles Teller on the drums backstage, in a wonderful nod to Whiplash. He even makes a JK Simmons crack by noting “Not my tempo!” Love it. And the punchline (“Acting is a noble profession”) is the icing on the cake. This is my favorite moment of the entire show so far.

SCIENCE AND TECHNICAL AWARDS

-Miles Teller and Margot Robbie introduce a video recapping the Scientific and Technical Awards, which awarded 59 honorees who’ve innovated and helped to evolve the medium of cinematic technology. Normally, whoever the pretty young actress of the moment is, they’re the ones who normally do this, and they do it solo. But now we have the pretty young actor of the moment doing it too. So who says we’re not making strides in equality? Yeah, I got nothin’.

BEST SOUND MIXING

-We then bring out Sienna Miller and Chris Evans for the next award. I swear Sienna Miller looks like an entirely different person every time I see her. The nominees are…

The team thanks Clint Eastwood and their entire Warner Bros. family. Nice and short. Although my big takeaway from this win is just how lovely and understated the score for American Sniper was. I got all sorts of feels hearing the closing credits music as they accepted their award.

-Jared Leto is here, and I’ve never seen a more lovely powder blue tux. He has Violet Beauregarde beat. The nominees are…

And the Oscar goes to…PATRICIA ARQUETTE!

She gets a standing ovation while the orchestra plays “Hero” by Family of the Year, the unofficial theme of the movie, which I absolutely adore, even though the entire song is basically repeats itself the whole way through. She whips out a list and thanks everyone who worked on Boyhood, as well as all her volunteers and experts who’ve helped her at GiveLove.org. She also thanks every woman who’s ever given birth, and every person who’ve ever paid taxes. She says it’s time for wage equality, and it’s time for change, yet all I can take away from this is that J-Lo is somehow seated next to Meryl Streep, who had nothing to do with Into the Woods (the Oscar seating chart usually goes by film, with Channing Tatum seated behind Foxcatcher co-star Steve Carrell and near Mark Ruffalo). Either way, I kind of loved the seating arrangement, if only because it gave the camera the chance to catch Streep and J-Lo gabbing in agreement at Arquette’s speech like old friends.

-Back from break, and NPH tells Robert Duvall to wake up Octavia Spencer if she nods off while guarding the Oscar briefcase. Duvall seems utterly confused, and not the least bit amused, by this. Come on, Robert! Are you a Duvall? Or a Don’tvall? Anyway, Josh Hutcherson is out now to introduce the next performer…

RITA ORA PERFORMS BEST ORIGINAL SONG NOMINEE “GRATEFUL”

-You know, this is a song I fully expect to hear on this season of reality singing shows, now that it’s gotten this added bit of exposure. No one would have performed this before because I don’t really know that anyone even saw Beyond the Lights, much less heard this song. But it’s a damn good pop song, and I could easily hear this on the radio, even though I don’t think it has a chance of winning in this category (although, you never know. If they want to finally give an Oscar to Diane Warren after all these years of making her wait, it could be now. But I would think it’d be for a more iconic song).

BEST VISUAL EFFECTS

-Ansel Elgort and a stunning Chloe Grace Moretz are out to present. Seriously, that’s a lovely dress Chloe is wearing, although I can’t tell if it’s white or peach. Hell, even if I did, I don’t know much about fashion anyway. The nominees are…

I’d consider this a bit of an upset, honestly. I thought Dawn of the Planet of the Apes had this one in the bag. As with everyone else tonight, the team (Paul Franklin, Andrew Lockley, Ian Hunter and Scott Fisher) thanks their friends and families, as well as everyone who worked on the film. In addition, they thank professor Kip Thorne, who helped significantly on the film.

Patrick Osborne thanks the Academy for recognizing animated shorts, since they’re his favorite things to make and watch. He also thanks John Lassetter, his wife, and his mom and dad. Co-winner Kristina Reed thanks her friends and family, and they’re pretty much a master class in how to say everything you want to say without taking a lifetime to say it.

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE FILM

-Zoe Saldana and Dwayne Johnson are out to present, although NPH is quick to get a dig in at the Academy for snubbing The LEGO Movie, which feels as dumb now as it did in January. The nominees are…

And the Oscar goes to…BIG HERO 6!

Okay, nevermind about Interstellar. THIS is the big upset of the night, since it was all but assumed How To Train Your Dragon 2 was taking this. Hell, this is almost as big a surprise as The LEGO Movie being snubbed. Not even the winners can believe it. The team (Don Hall, Chris Williams and Roy Conli) thanks Pixar/Walt Disney Animation Studios head John Lasseter, as well as their fellow nominees for contributing to what has been an amazing year for animated films. They thank their wives, and one of the winners thanks his parents for believing in him when he told them he wanted to work at Walt Disney. The orchestra starts playing them off, but they get their thank yous in just under the gun.

-Side note, but the interstitial music they play in-between breaks sounds suspiciously like the orchestra queuing up “In the Deep” on the night Crash beat Brokeback Mountain for Best Picture. #BadOscarFlashbacks Back from break, NPH introduces Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs, who gives a speech about heroism, acceptance, and freedom of expression. I’m not really sure what the point of this is other than to give Isaacs a role in the show, and to remind people that the theme of the show is supposed to be “heroes,” even though nothing producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron have delivered so far would suggest as much. Still, it’s a nice speech. NPH then checks in with Octavia Spencer again, and I find myself wondering what the payoff for this will be. Does the briefcase get lost? Does NPH open the briefcase at the end of the night to reveal he got every winner right? I’m genuinely curious.

BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN

-It says a lot about how outrageously good-looking Felicity Jones and Chris Pratt are that I can’t decide which of them looks better here.

And the Oscar goes to…THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL!

Adam Stockhausen thanks Wes Anderson for allowing him to make The Grand Budapest Hotel with him, while also thanking his team as well. He thanks his family and his teachers, and Anna Pinnock barely gets in a word edgewise before the orchestra cuts them off. But she does get to throw in a thank you for a brilliant script. Still, it’s a shame she didn’t get to say more.

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY

Idris Elba and Jessica Chastain are here, and everything I said about Pratt and Jones up top goes TRIPLE for these two. My God, Jessica Chastain is utterly devoid of flaw. The nominees are…

And the Oscar goes to…BIRDMAN!

Emmanuel Lubezki thanks the Academy and shares the award with the cast and crew as well as his fellow nominees. He also wants to share it with Alejandro Innaritu, his own wife Lauren, and his family. The applause at the mention of Innaritu suggests he could find himself heading up to the stage soon himself.

IN MEMORIAM

-Meryl Streep fights back tears in introducing the in memoriam video package, and now I’m already getting choked up seeing her so emotional, even though I’m not sure which of the dearly departed she’s thinking of as she sadly reflects. In the tribute video, the names and faces fly by so quickly, and the orchestra is so loud, that no one really receives any applause. But given the mournful, reflective nature of the package, that seems right. It always feels grim when it becomes a contest of sorts to see which late performer gets the most applause. Still, this video was a huge reminder to just how many great people we lost this year, from Robin Williams to Mike Nichols and Lauren Bacall. Wait a minute…WHERE THE HELL WAS PHILIP SEYMOUR HOFFMAN?! How does that big an omission even happen? [UPDATE: He died at the beginning of February 2014, so his death would have been included in last year’s In Memoriam segment. My bad. Now let me wipe all this egg off my face]

The end of the video segues into Jennifer Hudson, who comes onstage and dedicates her song to the lost stars who inspired them all. She then launches into “I Can’t Let Go” from Smash! Granted, it was the song from her multi-episode arc on Smash, but seriously, a SONG from SMASH is being performed on the OSCARS! And it’s AMAZING! And no, I can’t stop CAPITALIZING AT RANDOM! I loved this, and she sang it so well that I’m literally stunned she didn’t get a standing ovation.

BEST FILM EDITING

Winner Tom Cross is flushed to have won. He thanks his team at WME, as well as his team on Whiplash. He also thanks J.K. Simmons and Miles Teller for delivering gold with every take. Cross then thanks director Damien Chazelle, from the bottom of his heart, for sharing this journey with him. He wraps up by thanking his wife and his children as the orchestra kicks in. That’s three awards now for Whiplash. Could it be building momentum?

-Aaaaand here’s Terrence Howard, who shows more passion in introducing Whiplash, The Theory of Everything and Selma than most winners show in actually winning Oscars. Seriously, he struggles so hard to keep it together that I thought he might have flubbed a line or something. There’s also some racket going on with the sound, as if someone is jerking the microphone stand. It’s such a weird moment, and I have no idea whose fault is is. Maybe the dude is just insanely passionate about these films? Hell, I wouldn’t blame him. These three movies are amazing.

BEST DOCUMENTARY FEATURE

-David Oyelowo and Jennifer Aniston are here, although neither seems particularly thrilled to be there. Apropos of nothing, but Oyelowo sounds like a British Morgan Freeman. And that…I have absolutely no problem whatsoever with that. The nominees are…

And the Oscar goes to…CITIZENFOUR!

The team thanks the documentary community, while also noting that they’re here thanks to the brave organizations who’ve supported them, such as HBO. Discussion then turns to the documentary’s subject, Edward Snowden, and the privacy issues at its center. Snowden and other whistleblowers like him are thanked, and Julianne Moore is shown in the audience fighting back tears for some reason. NPH gets in a nice quip about how Snowden “couldn’t be here tonight for some (t)reason.” We then get played off to commercial break with an adorable orchestral rendition of “Falling Slowly”. Ignoring the whole “playing people off” fiasco, the orchestra is on FIRE tonight!

-Back from break, and NPH checks in with Octavia Spencer, only to find a seat filler in her place. Turns out, she’s our next presenter. In introducing the next musical performance, she notes that the only time the Academy Awards ceremony has ever been delayed was 50 years ago, out of respect following Martin Luther King’s assassination. Now, John Legend and Common are here to pay tribute with their Oscar nominated song, which is currently the frontrunner to win. So get ready for a moment…

JOHN LEGEND AND COMMON PERFORM BEST ORIGINAL SONG NOMINEE “GLORY”

-In a terrific bit of set design, the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma is recreated, with extras populating the stage as Freedom Walkers. This is an outstanding performance, with John Legend so on top of his game that I found myself wondering if this was even live, or if he was lip-syncing. Seriously, dude sounds PHENOMENAL. Common is also really on-point, delivering a rap that still has incredible flow even without a traditional beat underneath it. I can only imagine this is being placed last among Best Original Song nominees because the Academy expects this will win. Granted, they can’t really know for sure, since the only ones who do know are with Pricewaterhouse Coopers. Still, if “Glory” is their prediction, it’s not a bad one. This song and performance earn a standing ovation from the entire building, complete with raucous applause. David Oyelowo is in tears, and he’s not the only one, as Chris Pine is crying too. This was one of the best musical performances I’ve ever seen on the Oscars.

-NPH then throws a shoutout to the music director for the Oscars. He then gets an awesome dig by noting that Benedict Cumberbatch isn’t just the coolest name in Hollywood, it’s also the sound you get when you ask John Travolta to introduce Ben Affleck. This leads into a cool little moment where Idina Menzel introduces John Travolta and butchers the name just like he butchered hers last year. They have a wonderful back-and-forth onstage before going into the next award…

And the Oscar goes to…JOHN LEGEND AND COMMON FOR “GLORY”!

The duo gets a standing ovation, and now Jessica Chastain is fighting back tears. After thanking God (the first person to do so tonight, I believe), Common delivers a beautiful speech about visiting Selma, and realizing that the former landmark of a nation divided is now a symbol for change. John Legend adds that it’s time for change, with the movement in voting rights, and all the racially-infused turmoil in the news. He notes that there are more black men currently incarcerated than there were enslaved in 1850. In essence, this is a call to action, and a note that change must come. An absolutely deserving win, and these two appear to be the most excited to have won out of all of tonight’s winners so far. Common is downright giddy, and I think that’s adorable.

THE SOUND OF MUSIC TRIBUTE

-Scarlett Johansson introduces a tribute to The Sound of Music. Once again, if Zadan and Meron aren’t producing the Oscars, this is a tribute that doesn’t happen, 50th anniversary or not. Seriously, we still have six awards to hand out, and it’s damn near 11:30! Is this a segment that’s really necessary?

Lady Gaga Oscars 2015

Well, apparently, it is. Because what follows is pretty amazing. We get a medley of The Sound of Music songs from Lady Gaga, who’s still in the process of selling her whole “old fashioned chanteuse” reinvention. Of course, I say that like it’s a bad thing, when really, nothing could be further from the truth. I absolutely love this version of Lady Gaga. She sounds stunning here, doing total justice to Julie Andrews. I also really dig Gaga’s classical styling here, with a simple white gown and her blonde hair falling in ringlets around her. I’m swooning over here, people. As for the medley itself, it’s exactly what you’d expect: “Prelude and The Sound of Music,” “My Favorite Things,” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” “Edelweiss” — all the classics. By the end of it, the crowd is leaping to its feet to give her a standing ovation. And Gaga seems overcome by the response. It’s very well-deserved though, sespeci—OH MY GOD, JULIE ANDREWS IS HERE! Andrews comes out and hugs Gaga as the crowd roars, and Gaga chokes back tears as she introduces “the incomparable Julie Andrews.”

Andrews, looking as beautiful as ever, thanks Gaga for the performance, saying it really warmed her heart. And I believe her. She says she can hardly believe it’s been 50 years, saying, “I blinked, and here I am!” She then makes a lovely speech about how vital music is to a film before presenting the next award…

And the Oscar goes to…ALEXANDRE DESPLAT, THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL!

No huge surprise here. Desplat is one of the best, most versatile composers working today. Hell, he was nominated TWICE in this category for two scores that couldn’t be more dissimilar (The Grand Budapest Hotel and The Imitation Game). This was an extremely well-deserved win. In his speech, Desplat thanks Wes Anderson and calls him a genius. He says it’s been a beautiful decade in Hollywood for him, and he goes on to thank his mother, his wife, and his colleagues.

-Eddie Murphy looks like he’d rather be anywhere else in the world right now. The nominees are…

And the Oscar goes to…BIRDMAN!

-Alejandro Iñárritu thanks his cast, as well as his team at New Regency and Fox Searchlight Pictures. He also singles out his children and his wife, while also thanking The Academy. He then kindly allows his other three co-writers (Nicolás Giacobone, Alexander Dinelaris, Jr. and Armando Bo) to thank their families before the orchestra can get the chance to play them off. See? You can say everything you need to say without stepping all over everyone else’s speech time. I wish more people would learn this. Then again, winning an Oscar is heady stuff, so I would imagine not a lot of people are thinking in their moment of victory, nor are they necessarily realizing just how long they’re talking.

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY

-Oprah Winfrey is out to present the award, and she’s a huge contrast with Murphy, sounding super passionate about the nominated films. The nominees are…

And the Oscar goes to…THE IMITATION GAME!

He thanks the Academy and, in a quirky moment, Oprah Winfrey. He then showers his love on everyone who worked on The Imitation Game. He then delivers the most amazing speech of the night, revealing that Alan Turing never got to stand on a stage like this, and that’s inherently unfair. He says he tried to kill himself when he was 16 because he didn’t feel he belonged. But now he’s up here, so he wants to tell any girl or guy out there who feels like they don’t belong, “Yes you do. Stay awkward. Stay weird. And when it’s your turn to stand up here, pass the message along.” Paraphrasing, but trust me, it was an incredible speech that earns him a well-deserved standing ovation. Honestly, I was just glad The Imitation Game got a win up on the board, but the speech was like icing on the cake, to use a worn-out cliche that illustrates why I’d probably never win an Oscar for writing things.

BEST DIRECTOR

-Ben Affleck is here to present the award he was snubbed for two years ago, not that it mattered, since he got his Oscar for Argo anyway when it won Best Picture. The nominees are…

And the Oscar goes to…ALEJANDRO GONZALEZ INARRITU FOR BIRDMAN!

BIG cheer from the audience on this one. He notes that he had a good-luck charm when he won at the DGAs, in the form of a Raymond Carver tie. However, tonight, he’s wearing the exact same tighty-whities Michael Keaton famously wore in Birdman. “So thank you, Michael,” he says, earning laughter and cheers from the crowd. He then notes that the strange thing with these awards is that for someone to win, others have to lose. However, true art will be judged by time. He thanks the Academy for this incredible recognition, but he’s here because of the work of the actors, Emmanuelle Lubezki, and others who worked on this film. He apologizes for forgetting anyone, but he feels this is all moving in slow motion for him. He gives one last thank you and exits, keeping it succinct, as usual. A very deserving win.

Eddie is JAZZED to win! He can barely get through his speech before letting out the most infectious WOW! I’ve ever heard. He thanks Stephen Hawking, Jane Hawking, Jonathan Jones and the Hawking children. He promises the Academy he will take good care of Oscar and polish him all the time. He thanks co-star Felicity Jones, director James Marsh, Working Title Films and Focus Features. As he goes to thank his family, he’s practically jumping out of his own shoes. Eddie thanks his wife and notes they have a little one on the way. Such a wonderful speech. So, so wonderful. I couldn’t be happier for him.

BEST ACTRESS

-Matthew McConaughey is here, looking shaggy and haggard with his bushy beard, but slick from the neck down with his sweet-ass suit. The nominees are…

Matthew took so long to read her name, he had me worried there for a second. Julianne gets a standing ovation as she takes the stage and receives a hug from McConaughey. She can hardly contain her excitement as she recalls reading an article that says you live longer if you win an Oscar. She says if that’s true, then she’d really like to thank the Academy, since her husband is five years younger than her (that got some big laughs from the audience). She then thanks her colleagues and the people involved in the making of the film, as well as her parents who told her she could be anyone she wanted to be as long as she got an education. She then notes that director Richard Glatzer couldn’t be here tonight due to his health, since he’s been afflicted with ALS. She thanks him, bringing a close to a lovely speech, and a long career of being the bridesmaid but never the Oscar bride.

-We then have the payoff to Neil Patrick Harris’ Oscar predictions magic trick. The reveal? His predictions weren’t just the awards, but what would happen. He correctly predicted JK Simmons’ “call your parents” moment, John Travolta’s excessive face-touching on Idina Menzel, The Imitation Game screenwriter’s “stay weird” speech, and the three standing ovations for John Legend and Common. I know it probably wasn’t, but man how I wish this were a real magic trick. NPH IS a magician, after all.

BEST PICTURE

-Sean Penn is here, not looking like Death warmed over, for once.

And the Oscar goes to…BIRDMAN!

Sean Penn teases out the announcement by recreating Terrence Howard’s teleprompter fail, and then asking “Who gave this guy his green card?” in reference to Innaritu. Once onstage, Innaritu laments that he’s always chosen to speak, since he’s the worst English speaker of the bunch. He eventually thows to his producing partners, one of whom thanks his family. Innarity thanks his wife and his kids, and also mentions Guillermo Del Toro and Alfonso Cuarón before calling Michael Keaton forward to say his thanks. Keaton says it’s great simply to be here. He then throws it back to Innaritu who gives a shoutout to his fellow Mexicans, hoping they can one day build a Mexican government they deserve, and that the people who came to America can earn the same respect and dignity as those that came before. A beautiful conclusion to what was, honestly, a pretty manic and all-over-the-place speech.

And that’s a wrap! I did terrible with my predictions, but I don’t really care, because this was an absolutely thrilling Oscar season. Birdman wouldn’t have been my choice for Best Picture, but it wasn’t a bad choice either. Ultimately, this was a really strong year for film, and all eight Best Picture nominees were deserving.
