2016 Screen Actors Guild Award Nominations: ‘Empire’ Shut Out, Oscar Race Heats Up

The nominees are in for the 22nd Screen Actors Guild Awards, honoring the best performances on TV and film for the year. The nominations include some surprises, namely that Empire and Scandal — two shows predicted to score nominations for lead actress and, possibly, ensemble — were shut out completely.

But that’s hardly all, as the Oscar race is heating up. On the good side of things, Bryan Cranston looks like he might be on his way to becoming an Academy Award nominee, as he earned a nomination for his role in Trumbo. The bad news for a lot of awards prognosticators, however, is that The Martian was shut out. No nomination for Matt Damon or the considerably talented ensemble. Not that it’s necessarily a huge shock, especially considering the depth of the field, with movies like Spotlight and Trumbo making the cut.
