THOUGHTS

TATIANA MASLANY IS AN EMMY NOMINEE! Seriously, her nomination for Orphan Black was the highlight of the nominations, for me. But that’s not all. Personally, I’m absolutely stoked about the love for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, the nomination for Keegan-Michael Key of Key & Peele, and the nod for Ben Mendelsohn in Bloodline. The Television Academy is making strides to show more variety in their nominations, and there was a lot to like here, whether it was Taraji P. Henson scoring a nod for Empire, or Last Week Tonight scoring a nomination in the Variety/Music category. But beyond those picks, I can’t really say that much about these nominations are surprising. I expected picks like Better Call Saul and Transparent to make the cut, among newcomers, while mainstay nominees like Game of Thrones, Mad Men, House of Cards, Modern Family and Veep were sure-fire bets. That said, there were some other surprises, such as the snub for category favorite The Big Bang Theory, or EIGHT actresses earning nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy. Or American Horror Story: Freak Show earning SIX acting nominations. But a lot of the surprises today were pleasant ones, in my opinion.

The 67th Primetime Emmy Awards will air live Sunday, Sept. 20 from the Microsoft Theater L.A. in Los Angeles on FOX.
